Young fans identify with Dorothy because she ran away from bullies and searched for a better place. Oz symbolizes a place away from the oppression of being a gay child, a safe harbor from teasing, and a place of refuge where one can be oneself. The stories are about misfits with unusual identities who find imaginative and courageous ways to get away from persecution, and end up being respected and famous. Oz stories give a young gay boy a glimpse of another way his life could be. They offer happier endings to one's own story.

One thing that's likely not visible to all younger queers is that little kids shows have gotten radically queerer in the last 10 years.
I'm not just talking about Owl House, Kippo etc, much as I love them.
I mean like stuff for kindergardners.
Characters in Strawberry Shortcake and Superhero Girls and more have gay parents just unremarkably in the background. That was unthinkable 15 years ago.
But the thing that shocks me utterly is the casual inclusion of nonbinary characters.
Dee and Friends in Oz, Polly Pocket, Craig of the Creek...it seems like half the shows my daughter watches have nonbinary characters just seamlessly included. Not even a Very Special Episode. Just...here's the scarecrow in charge of scarecrow village who uses they/them pronouns that everyone just uses without comment.
I was almost 30 before I found the word nonbinary. For my kid to just grow up with this is astonishing.
Conservatives are so mad because it's INCREDIBLY hard to just put this kind of inclusion back away. Once something is normal, and clearly not causing anything bad to happen, it's hard to convince people to be scared of it.

I just thought of this:
So I’m thinking in my crackfic, after Jasiri and Kenge come back from Oz (as in wake up from a dream) and she’s telling everyone about it, Janja jokingly says “Next time, I’m goin’ to a fantasy world”, hinting at a joke sequel crackfic which I’ll never make.
And now I give you…..Janja in Wonderland
Janja follows what he swears is Ushari’s ghost down a hole or an Aardvark den into a strange new world where everyone seems to be crazy
The cast:
Janja as Alice
Ushari as the White Rabbit (ghost snake)
Sumu plays the role of the Doorknob but instead is the gatekeeper
Cheezi and Chungu as Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum
Mzingo and his Parliament as the Flowers
Shupavu and Njano as the Cheshire Cat (skinks)
Kenge as the Caterpillar
Reirei as the Mad Hatter
Kiburi as the March Hare
Goigoi is that little door mouse inside the teacup cuz he’s so sleepy
Zira as the Queen of Hearts
Scar as the King of Hearts
The rest of the Outlanders as cards
Azaad gets the role of the Dodo, with the Night Pride participating in the Caucus Race
Extra notes:
-Janja’s the self aware one this time. He recognizes all of his friends but decides to play along for the hell of it
-Wema and Tunu play the role of Dinah (Alice’s cat), who follow Janja until he falls into the hole. Then they do that little kid “BYYYYEEEEEE!!!”
-Janja never cries, instead he gets pissy and fed up with everything. “Hey, that ain’t fair!” and “Oh, that is some bullshit” is a running gag
-Kiburi gets an accessory this time. He wears a gold chain and a cute little bowtie
-Instead of smoking, Janja finds Kenge using a tree as a punching bag. He’s also carved vowels in various trees with his claws. He gets mad when Janja grows bigger than him
-The scene where Alice gets stuck in the White Rabbit’s house doesn’t happen here. Mainly cuz I wouldn’t know what to do with it
-The “eat me” and “drink me” things still exist, but it’s a bone instead of a biscuit and a drink bowl instead of a bottle
-The minute Janja sees Scar and Zira, he immediately believes he’s gonna die 😭. It goes as well as you would expect
-Mzingo and his parliament are basically a club where they talk about random stuff while holding various types of flowers
-The fic ends with Janja waking up from his dream and everybody thinking he’s crazy Jfhhfgdg
#help i love this idea HDGDGDGD#leaving jasiri out of this one cuz she deserves a break#although ig she plays alice’s sister in this case#i think this is my way of tormenting the outlanders#no but cheshire skinks would fit so well cuz they’re little shits#crack fic idea#tlg outlanders#the lion guard

"There's no place like home..."
Judy as Dorothy Gale and Dee as Toto, Dorothy's pet dog!
Plot:
During a mission that involved Mother, the Well-Mannered Children and a tornado-themed scheme, Judy and Dee got sucked into a twister and got transported to a weird world (along with receiving an costume change). After receiving the Ruby Slippers, the two have to go see the wizard who can send them back home. During their journey, Judy and Dee make new friends (who strangely resemble her friends) who want to see the wizard while avoiding the Mother Witch of the West and her goons who will do anything to get the Ruby Slippers.
(Side note: This idea was of course inspired by 1939's The Wizard of Oz movie. I'll draw the rest of the cast soon!)

The Empire Strikes Back (1980, Irvin Kershner)
20/03/2024
The Empire Strikes Back, also know as Star Wars: Episode V or Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back, is a 1980 film directed by Irvin Kershner. Sequel to Star Wars, it is the second film in order of production (fifth in order of internal chronology of the series) of the science fiction saga of the same name created by George Lucas set three years after the events told in Star Wars and is the second act of the original trilogy.
The Galactic Empire, under the leadership of the evil Darth Vader, is looking for Luke Skywalker and the forces of the Rebel Alliance. While Luke's friends, Han Solo and Leia Organa, are busy fleeting the Imperial threat, the young hero is sent by Obi-Wan Kenobi to the old Jedi Master Yoda, in order to complete his training.
The film, in which Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams, Alec Guinness, Anthony Daniels and Frank Oz took part, was produced independently by Lucas himself, without the influence of a film studio, and had a troubled production, plagued by delays, disagreements within the crew and unusability of the sets. Received lukewarmly by critics, alienated by the abrupt change in atmosphere of the film compared to its predecessor, The Empire Strikes Back won two Oscars, becoming a cultural phenomenon over the years and is today considered the best film in the saga and one of the best science fiction films ever realized. Adjusted for inflation, the film is the twelfth on the list of the highest grossing films of all time in the United States of America and Canada, having managed to sell more than 98 million tickets in the two countries.

E.T: A Comprehensive Review
At their best, both Spielberg and Lucas make idealized versions of the kinds of films they loved as kids, in the process furnishing this generation’s filmgoers with visual treats of unprecedented skill and sophistication. Despite the continual presence of the little Yoda-like creature, “E.T.” is not first and foremost an effects picture, but rather a charming “Twilight Zone”-like fable which reminds by turns of “The Wizard of Oz,” “Mary Poppins,” a benign switch on “King Kong” and a variation of Spielberg’s own “Close Encounters.”
Opening sequence actually comes off like a repeat of “Close Encounters”‘ final frames, as a sizeable spaceship takes off just before some earthly authorities are able to close in on it. One of its occupants gets left behind, however, and the viewer is instantly sympathetic with its plight in the threateningly different environment of a modern California subdivision.
E.T. is highly fortunate to be found by young Henry Thomas who, after some understandable initial fright, takes the ‘goblin’ in, first as a sort of pet and then as a friend he must guard against the more preying elements of human society. Over time, Thomas teaches E.T. how to talk and includes his older brother (Robert MacNaughton) and younger sister (Drew Barrymore) in on the secret, even as he manages to hide his discovery from his mother (Dee Wallace).
Ultimately, of course, the official representatives of society locate E.T., which seems to occasion a rapid decline in its health until it appears to die. When it revives, Thomas marshals his friends into a kids’ commando squad to spirit E.T. back to the spaceship which is on its way to a rescue rendezvous.
First element which had to work to insure film’s success was E.T. itself. As superlatively created by Carlo Rambaldi, the creature manages to project both a wondrous childlike quality and a sense of superior powers. Cutely awkward in its movements, the being has rubbery brown skin, an extendable neck and possesses eyes which dilate on cue. It even gets to play a drunk scene, perhaps a first for screen aliens. Assuredly not lost on those involved with the film are the opportunities for E.T.-related toys and dolls, which are enormous.
An amusing sidelight to the tale is that the action takes place in a suburban household almost identical to that in the Spielberg-produced “Poltergeist,” which leads to the thought that the two, distinctly different stories could be unfolding in neighboring homes simultaneously. In fact, many of the motifs in the early going are similar to those in “Poltergeist”–the middle-class family, the blonde dog, goldfish, people glaring into bright lights in awe and disbelief.
But “E.T.” will surely prove an embraceable film by the general public. Rarely has a picture so completely evinced a kid’s p.o.v. and shown the complicity of youngsters against adults. It’s been said that the only people who don’t like Disneyland are late adolescents who feel too hip to enjoy the pleasures of their earlier years, and the same will probably hold true for “E.T.”
As can be expected for Spielberg and the Industrial Light & Magic shop, the technical effects are state-of-the-art superb. Enough cannot be said for John Williams’ score, which stands as a model of film composing–although it is almost continually present it’s also practically unnoticeable, so well does it both complement and further the events onscreen.
As far as the performances go, the key was finding three kids who could respond with both innocence and gumption to the arrival of E.T. All fulfill the requirements, and Thomas is perfect in the lead, playing the childhood equivalent of Spielberg’s everyman heroes of his previous pics.
There are some unsatisfactory elements–slow spots occur during the middle stretch, the mild anti-establishment stance is getting to be a bit cliche and one never knows whether E.T.’s mortal illness is physical or psychological in nature, or both. But, as with “Close Encounters,” the truly lovely and moving ending more than makes up for everything. Chalk up another smash for Spielberg.

"Friends of Dorothy" by Dee Michel has no business being as good as it is.
For those who don't know, it's a non-fiction book, written by a gay man, that goes in-depth into why so many Wizard of Oz fans are gay men, particularly older gay men. I'm reading it right now and it has a lot of really interesting insights into the "Oz-gay connection" and why the themes in Oz media appeal to LGBTQ people.
While the book is specifically about gay men's appreciation of Oz, I think a lot of Michel's points apply to queer people in general, as well as other groups who feel like they aren't accepted by society. A lot of it is also about the MGM film, but there's some good analysis of the books too. I definitely recommend it.

What was the name of the main character in the last book you read? I don’t remember what book I last read. It was probably a children’s book though. I don’t really get to read for fun anymore.
Do you own a pair of Disney pajamas? Probably.
What are three of your favorite toppings for salads? Aside from the must-haves, like lettuce, spinach, carrots, sometimes purple cabbage, and hard-boiled eggs... croutons, cheese (usually cheddar), and ranch.
What was the last place you went out to eat? Uhm. Went to Texas Roadhouse this past Friday for girls’ night with one of my younger sisters, her best friend, and my cousin. My cousin’s asshole husband and two of her little loves joined us too though so it wasn’t really girls’ night at that point.
Do you have a lot of clutter in your home? My house is a fucking disaster right now. I cannot wait for my parents to get their own place in the next few months.
What was the last pill you took? 💊 Cold and flu medicine. I’m about to take some pain meds though. I have a dull ache in my right knee and hip.
Are you happy with your current doctor? 👩⚕️ For the most part, yes. he is so nice.
Is there a bottle of Benadryl in your medicine cabinet? There’s off brand allergy meds for children and adults.
Do you take vitamins? No. I probably should but I don’t.
Does your hair need to be washed right now?
So badly.
What was the last thing you ate? A slim jim. I really wanted one for whatever reason. I’m usually not a huge fan of them.
Do you prefer pizza or hot dogs? 🌭 🍕 Pizza.
What is your favorite pizza topping? 🍕 Ham, bacon, and pineapple lately. Is your dad a jerk? No, I wouldn’t describe him as a jerk.
What color are your fingernails painted? My nails aren’t painted.
Is anyone in your family currently in the military? My brother is in the national guard.
What was the last thing you bought at the dollar store? Snacks and pregnancy tests. Just out of precaution because my periods haven’t returned since I had Nora yet but she’s still nursing.
Are prices of things going up where you live? Yeah. It’s pretty scary right now.
What color was the last carpet you sat on? It was at work. I think it’s like a grayish-blue but I am drawing a blank on the for sure color.
What is your favorite dog breed? Husky or akita mixes. I’m a bit bias to my pups though.
When was the last time you wore make-up? 💄 It’s been a very long time.
What was the last thing you ordered at the last restaurant you went to? I got the 8 oz sirloin (half of that was brought home), loaded mashed potatoes, and a house salad.
What was the last thing you wore that was pink? I don’t remember. Probably a toy necklace.
Name three people you know, if any, that currently live in another country. Sofia (this super sweet girl my brother has been talking to since September and is currently visiting).
Name three people you know who are from another country (and what countries?) I only could think of Sofia.
What are your grandmas’ names? Brenda (my mom’s biological mom), Susie (my dad’s biological mom), Dee (my mom’s foster mom), and Debbie (my mom’s stepmom).
If applicable, who lives across the hall from you? We live in a four-bedroom house. My kids’ and sisters’ rooms are closest to mine.
Have you ever heard of “fairy hair”? (It’s tinsel in the hair that gets put in permanently…it’s like tinsel highlights.) I have not. It sounds terrible..
Have you found any gray hairs on your head? I have not.
If applicable, how old were you when you found your first gray hair? I haven’t yet. I’ll be thirty this year.
Do you think you will dye your hair when it’s gone gray? I doubt it.
Do you have a sister-in-law? I do.
Do you have a brother-in-law? Nothing official, but yes. Two of my sisters (Erin and Ashley) are both in long-term committed relationships and also have children with their partners. I’m finally an aunt. :)
When was the last time you went swimming? 👙 ☀️ Last summer.
Do you own a bikini? No. I would not be comfortable after having three kids.
What color is your bike, if you own one? I don’t have one.
If you were a rockstar, what color guitar would you have? 🎸 I don’t know. Probably at least a light blue one. And a black one.
Does your home have carpeted floors? Our room is the only one with carpet, but it’s all tore up, so we will probably change that soon.
What color was the last scarf you wore? I don’t remember. I don’t usually wear scarfs.
What was the last spicy thing you ate? I don’t remember. I don’t really eat spicy foods.

What color was the last sports bra you wore, if applicable?
Black and gray.
What is your nicest neighbor’s name? Jim.
Would you rather have a personal chef or personal house cleaner? House cleaner. All day. I can’t keep up with the number of animals and people that live in my house right now. It’s so gross in here right now.
Do you have any zits on your face right now? Yeah. Masks are wonderful.
Do you wear glasses or contacts? Neither.
How many Britney Spears albums have you owned? A couple when I was little.
What was the first concert you went to? I don’t remember. I just know it was at the local fair.
Do you like cheese? 🧀 Yeah. What are three of your favorite things to sprinkle cheese on top of? Chili, salads, and spaghetti.

Is there a bag or basket of yarn somewhere in your home? 🧶 Probably in my sister’s room.
Do you ever wear skirts? Very, very rarely.
Would you rather have a tattoo of a skull or a flower? I already have a flower tattoo - it’s my matching tattoo with my mom.
Have you ever had to take steroids? 💊 Probably.
What are three of the worst withdrawal effects or side effects you have experienced from a medication? 💊 Uh, I haven’t ever had anything too serious that I can remember. I’ve had some pretty bad dizziness, dry mouth, and nausea though.
What are three things you like about church? I don’t go to church. I’m not a religious person.
What are three things you dislike about church?
Does your town have a horse and carriage company? I honestly don’t know. Who are three of the biggest jerks you know? Jacob can be. Lol. Uhm. On a real note... Jason and Christian.
Have you ever met a Jason that you didn’t like? Well, the only Jason I know sexually abused me as a child so there’s that.
Have you ever had a friend named Sarah? I do currently actually at work.
Did you go to school with a Suzy? Not that I recall.
What was the name of the person who bullied you the most in high school? Micah was the meanest one.
Do you know someone named Matthew? Yeah. I’m not a huge fan of Matthews either.
…Mark? Yes. The Marks I know have been nice.
….Luke? Yes.
….John? Yeah.
Have you ever been friends with an Ashley? My sister is named Ashley. We used to be friends I guess.
….an Emily? Yeah, in elementary school.
….a Jessica? Yes. Not so much anymore.
….a David? That’s my dad’s name.
Have you ever dated a Matthew? Nope.
Who was the last person you remember hanging up on you? Probably my mom.
How’s your heart? Are you wounded? 💔 Eh. Could be better, could be worse.
What was the last type of pie you ate? Probably apple pie.
Are you happy today? Not really. They made new positions at work. One of them is a lead float position, which floating is my primary job at work these days. I’m applying for the promotion but I’m 99.9% sure I’m not going to get it and that they really shouldn’t be having people apply or interview because I am 99.9% sure that they already planned on giving it to Shannon when they made the position anyways even though I’m just as qualified and I’ve been there the longest. I also am the one that gets thrown on all of the kids and never complains about it.
What time did you wake up this morning? I officially got up at 6:15 AM.
And last but not least, did you enjoy this survey? It was okay.
