27 Fantastic Garage Organiser Designs & Products For A More Manageable Space
Bring order to your garage with storage systems solutions that make good use of all available space. organise tools, outdoor equipment, and everything else you need to keep organised with these practical garage storage ideas. By using shelves, hooks, pegboards, and more, you will be able to stash all of your belongings, leaving you with enough space for a car.
01 Efficient Garage Organisation
This additional garage bay has custom shelves stacked up top for Christmas decorations, clothing, and sporting equipment. Open bins and shelving below allow for family members to easily store things. Hooks keep bikes upright, which maximises space on the walls and floors. A bench, kids desk, and an area rug let the space double as an extra playroom.
02 Extra Garage Storage
If you are running out of space to store items in the kitchen or basement, use your garage to store items that would not fit anywhere else. Here, 16-inch-deep shelves store excess supplies from around your house, like large quantities of paper, canned and bottled beverages, cooking pots, and loose, big-ticket items. Smaller buckets contain cleaning supplies.
03 Garage Shoe Storage
Consider where you can easily access each category of items while organising the garage, like placing shoes near the door. Here, 20-inch-deep shelving holds family shoes by the entryway to the home. The "no shoes allowed" house policy is easily enforced, and there is one shelf per household member. If space is a limitation, consider an adjustable stand-alone shoe rack (such as this Better Homes & Gardens Farmhouse 3-tiered Shoe Rack).
04 Garage Storage for Small Items
Slender boxes and baskets are better garage organisation ideas to store smaller items than big, covered containers. In this garage, hanging drawers store commonly used utilitarian items like small tools, paint brushes, extension cords, and spare bulbs. Drawer dividers prevent smaller items from getting lost. On top, a storage unit holds large purchases of water and soda.
05 Sports Equipment Storage
Bring order to piles of sporting gear with adjustable shelving system, baskets, and bins. Here, a mobile bin for smaller odds and ends dangles from the front of one shelf, clearing room for larger items. Below, big mesh bins have wheels to make it easy for kids to wheel in all their sports equipment during a game.
06 Stylish Garage Storage Ideas
To make vertical space work in this garage, homeowners put up some drywall on one side, then installed a rack-style storage space on the walls, which hid equipment in clean, white bins. The system is mounted tall enough above the floor so wheeled toys can fit under it. Plus, coloured magnets on the refrigerator and freezer, glossy metal flooring, and art over the workbench add a personal touch to the garage.
07 Garage Tool Organisation
Create a well-organised garage workstation for tools storage and to offer a work space. On this workbench, power tools are hidden on a lower shelf, while magnetic hooks keep lighter items positioned to the sides. Make sure you position your workstations close to power outlets, so that you will not have to relocate your gear to another location in order to get your projects done.
08 Labelled Garage Storage
This garage storage idea features a clever system, including sliding drawers for easy access to household essentials you frequently use. No more moving heavy boxes that are four-deep just to reach items on the bottom. For a colourful flair, create coloured labels using scraps of paint.
09 Garage Organising Ideas
A snazzy snap-on toolbar makes quick work of organising garden tools and snow shovels with long handles. If you have a garage fridge, suspend lighter items on the sides with the help of the extra-strong magnetic hooks. Stock the bins with cleaning supplies or yard supplies, then stow them atop the refrigerator to get to them quickly.
10 Garage Bicycle Storage
Bicycles can occupy a tonne of precious garage space when simply rolled into them. To keep your floors clean, set up a pulley system that suspends bikes over the ceiling joints. Mount hooks near the area so you can easily store your helmets.
11 Streamlined Garage Storage
A garage is ideal for organising and storage of tools, outdoors equipment, and items from the offseason. This space makes use of various garage storage ideas, like freestanding shelving units for things like cleaning supplies and dog food, and pegboards for tools, all to keep things organised. A wood shelving unit is installed above the door for hiding seasonal supplies.
12 Garage Storage Shelf
Keeping boots, buckets, soil, and hoses (similar to this 1.7-gallon galvanised metal watering hose from Better Homes & Gardens) vertically on the adjustable shelves saves space and removes the bulkiness from the floor. Adjustable shelves make it easy to create room for a variety of sizes of items when your storage needs change. Simply mount shelves to different heights to fit new items.
13 Ultimate Garage Organisation
This garage has space to store just about anything -- from gardening tools to sporting equipment. Take cues from its set-up for your own garage organising strategies. Take garage organisation to a new level. See how this garage uses smart storage solutions to optimise sports equipment, gardening supplies, and more. Take cues from its set-up to help you get organised in your garage.
14 All-in-One Garage Workstation
Take advantage of your garage to create the ultimate work space. Outfit the multipurpose workspace with a potting table, caster-wheeled metal toolbox, an overhead cupboard, and hooks for hanging bags and aprons from the walls. For a decorative flair, lay down a sturdy area rug or carpet tiles to soften hard floors.
15 Seasonal Clothing Storage
Free up storage by delegating off-season clothes or items that were passed on for the next baby to garage shelves. Use clear, similar-size containers with covers to keep things looking tidy and maximise your space. Since you will not need to access those items frequently, it is okay to store them on top. Apply labels to help identify what is down low.
16 Hardware Storage Ideas
Add some colour to the storage room in the garage. Paint squares on your pegboard to denote spaces for particular items. Hang a pegboard from a wall stud and outfit with buckets to create a clever storage system. The angled bins store frequently used accessories that cannot be hung from hooks as well, like gardening gloves and hose nozzles. Mount a big bucket on the racking to provide a replacement for the hose rack, which offers storage, too.
17 Garage Pegboard Storage
Add some colour to the garage storage. Paint squares on your pegboard to denote spaces for particular items (like this Better Homes & Gardens Blue Cove Water Hose). Hang a pegboard from a wall stud and outfit with buckets to create a clever storage wall system. The angled bins store frequently used accessories that cannot be hung from hooks as well, like gardening gloves and hose nozzles. Mount a big bucket on the racking to provide a replacement for the hose rack, which offers storage, too.
18 Garage Storage Bins
Cohesive and functional, these plastic buckets are a handy way to introduce organisation into the garage. Look for a system that simply snaps together along the racks walls. Turning the wasted space under your cabinets into neat rows of jars for commonly used items like seed packets, pliers, and painting tape means you will never need to dig around for smaller items again.
19 Garage Cabinetry Ideas
Slatted panelling allows cabinets to be mounted on a wall, leaving no holes in your drywall. This also gives you the flexibility to move them around as needed. This 24x24x12-inch enclosure, for instance, supports up to 150 pounds, and is coated for durability.
20 Concealed Garage Storage
Curtains are not just for the shower or the windows; they are a cheap, simple solution to hiding your genius garage storage. Install a curtain rod and panels to the corners of the garage for an instant fix. Use this garage organising idea to hide unsightly gear or clutter for a cleaner appearance.
21 Garage Storage Hooks
A rack with racks adds to the garages storage capabilities, using the racks to hold large garden tools. Be sure to use the proper hooks for heavier items like shovels, rakes, and power tools. Place the hooks at different heights to allow convenient access.
22 Small Garage organisers
Take a cue from the kitchen and utilise the spice containers in the garage. These small containers are great for organising screws, nails, and washers. The clear cover makes it easy to see what is in there, too, saving you time searching for items. Mount the magnet panels on the pegboards so you can store your storage bins away when they are not being used.
23 Portable Garage Storage
Rout holes into wood showcase shelves to provide an easy spot for miscellaneous items like scissors and zip ties. These little buckets neatly nestle into holes, making this a simple garage storage idea. The handles make it quick to pick up containers and carry them to another location when needed.
24 Garage Work Bench Organisation
Simple modifications can turn this bench for pots into a full-fledged garage workspace. Large holes punched in the shelves now provide storage options for day-to-day tools. A metal ruler slid onto the top of the bench is ready at all times to take quick measurements. Jars, hooks, and magnetic clips make it easy to reach tools and workshop necessities.
25 Multifunctional Garage Bench
Combine several best garage storage ideas to create an entire workstation. This traditional peg bench provides plenty of workable surface, and the pegboard keeps tools handy. Clip-on lighting offers focused lighting to work on projects. Below, labelled grid-type bins equipped with rollers are used for sorting and storage of recyclable materials.
26 Garage Wall Storage
These versatile hooks allow you to store bulky tools without taking up much space on the walls. Mount the hooks on channels in panels, leaving plenty of room between them so you do not cause any confusion or smashed handles. This low-profile garage storage idea is ideal for small spaces, but it still leaves enough clearance to get around.
27 Screwdriver Storage
Easy-to-install, the screwdriver holder keeps tools neatly organised. Choose a design that allows for quick identification of items at a glance. Install this great garage storage idea close to your work space, so you will not have to walk too far for the items you need.

Hello, hello! This week, we are going on a little:
Home Tour!
Notes: Answer the following with pictures (dialogue from your characters is optional!). Collages are highly encouraged if you want to answer a question with multiple pictures because tumblr mobile only allows 10 total pics. Otherwise, tumblr on a desktop lets you add multiple pictures (non-beta)!
For both:
What does the outside of the home look like? (Front/back yard, garden, pool, etc)
Living room and home office (if any)?
Kitchen and dining room?
Bedrooms? (Master, guest, others)
Other rooms?
Do you own your dream home? If not, what does that dream home look like?
What is your favorite room to spend time in with each other?
Casey: Hello Bree! Welcome to our home! We're so excited to have you here! Honestly, you're our first guest! We just closed recently, and we've been doing some redecorating, but we're not done yet.
Ethan: Why don't we show her outside first, it's mostly why we ended up here.
Casey: Yes it is! See, the Seaport is very special to me, ever since I moved to Boston, this is the place that I find the most peace.
Ethan: Plus, we will show you the exact place that I tracked her down and told Casey that I loved her for the first time...
Casey: FINALLY - after 3 years.
Ethan: Can we put that in the better late than never category and finally move on?
Casey: Pfft.. not on your life! (Giggles and pushes him with her shoulder) Anyway, these are some pictures we'll leave with you. You can see the exterior of our building and the rooftop pool where I will be spending A LOT of time in the summer. Also, the picture of Harborwalk at sunset, that is the spot Ethan was talking about and we have a perfect view of it from the balcony off of our bedroom. (SQUEAL)
Ethan: See, that's how I knew this was the place. After touring dozens of places, this is the only one that made her squeal.
Casey: And we know how he likes to make me squeal!
Ethan: We'll get to the bedrooms, Casey. (laughs)
Casey: This is our foyer and the living room. By the way, the painting in the foyer and the carpet in the living room... no bueno... they will be going soon. Bu, the view from the living room...
Ethan: Case, refrain from squealing again!
Casey: But you love it when I squeal! (pouts)
Ethan: Yes, but you may be scaring Bree.
Casey: (Sighs) Anyway, this is our home office.
Ethan: We're also redecorating here, it will be designed with two desks so we can work in the same room. We could convert one of the bedrooms into another office, but I like the idea of us working together.
Casey: Yes, until I piss him off... then he'll be sitting on the couch with his laptop. (laughs)
Ethan: You don't piss me off.
(She shoots him a look)
Ethan: OK, I guess we could always put a desk in one of the spare bedrooms as a back up. (smiles)
Casey: Now, the little alcove with the 2 chairs, that's the first place we decorated. I freaking LOVE it. I will be spending hours there just reading and taking in the views.
Ethan: And if she hasn't pissed me off...
Casey: Or vice-versa...
Ethan: I'll probably be sitting there with her. (Looks at Casey). I never piss you off.
Casey: (Laughs uncontrollably). Oh, I'm sorry. I'm sorry, why don't we head to the kitchen, I need some water after that joke.
Ethan: (Rolls eyes) I do love her...
Casey: Now, here is the room where I will be spending the least amount of time. The kitchen.
Ethan: Yes, this is my domain, but she will be doing the clean-up here since I will be doing the cooking. We really don't need to be in the hospital more than we already are.
Casey: And what is that supposed to mean?
Ethan: I will be cooking, so we can avoid food poisoning.
Casey: I mean, he's not wrong. (She shrugs) Self-awareness is important! Now, let me show you the outdoor areas, this was a huge selling point because we essentially have an outdoor dining room and living room!
Ethan: Like we said, Casey feels happiest and most secure when she's by the water and, well, that's all that really matters to me.
Casey: Awww, baby.
Ethan: I mean it, I always wanted a townhome in Beacon Hill, but for seeing her so happy... well, that's better than any townhome.
Casey: (Whispers to Bree) This is why he gets it a lot. (laughs) Oh, before we head to the bedrooms... Check! Out! My! Bathroom! I swear to God I'm going to have wrinkled skin forever because there is NO way I am ever leaving that tub. Ever.
Ethan: As you can see, that was another big selling point.
Casey: Last but not least, these are our bedrooms. Yeah, four, it's excessive, but we figure this way we can be here, possibly forever. It's not like we have to move if we have children.
Ethan: Yeah, a house in the suburbs really wouldn't be our thing.. so...
Casey: Oh, no way. I grew up in Philadelphia and I was crushed when my parents moved me to the 'burbs at 12. If we have kids, I want them to grow up in the city, I think it's the best experience. We're also close to the Eliot Innovation School, where I'd love our kids to go. If we have kids that is...
Ethan: Casey has already made it clear... no snooty private schools, public school it is. She wants our kids to have a normal childhood.
Casey: Well, as normal as it can be growing up in a luxury condo. (She gets quiet and a little teary.) You have to understand, as grateful as I am for all of this, it is also a little hard for me. I didn't grow up like this, neither did Ethan, but, to me, it's hard to have so much when there are others who have so little. So, we had a talk and I insist that we do more to give back. The minute we got this place, I signed up for more volunteer hours in the free clinic and I will be involved with other things too, because, look, I know how lucky I am ... (she gets emotional and trails off).
Ethan: Casey is still adjusting, she's not a borderline snob like I can be at times. She really has a heart of gold and, that's one of the things I love about her. I promised her that we will make good on our pledge. Those who have much, should give much. That's how we will live and that's how we will raise our children.
(Casey gives Ethan a huge, lingering hug.)
Casey: I love you.
Ethan: I love you, too.
Casey: ANYWAY. Please excuse me, I am sure I am PMS-ing right now (she laughs), these are the bedrooms. We just redecorated ours (with the brown spread), then we have the guest room.
Ethan: Since the other two have such spectacular views we have made them sitting areas for now. But that will more than likely change in time.
Casey: And that's our place! I'm really excited, we just closed and it's like a dream.
Ethan: You know, before you go, Bree, can I take you downstairs. Hun, I'd like to show her the gym and the common areas, do you mind.
Casey: (Sensing he'd like her to stay behind...) "Oh, sure.. well, it was great seeing you again Bree, and please come over soon. I promise I won't cook!
(Walking in the hallway Ethan whispers to Bree, even though they are long past the point where Casey could hear him.)
Ethan: Casey doesn't know this yet, but by the time this article comes out she will, so I thought I'd give you a sneak peek. Since she loves the water so much and my goal is to make her the happiest woman alive, this is her wedding present. I'll be sharing it with her next week. Other than my real estate agent and my attorney, you're the first to know.
Ethan: I want us to spend as many weekends as we possibly can there and, one day, maybe that's where we will retire. I know we will make a lot of great memories here.
(Bree is clearly overwhelmed and impressed.)
Bree: She is going to LOVE this! Oh my God, please let me come and interview you there once you share it with her! She is the luckiest woman in the world!
Ethan: Of course, you can be our first guest there too! But just to be clear, I am the lucky one.
If you read this far, thank you... I seriously don't think this could be more disgustingly sweet. LOL :)
Also - yes, I went out of my way to show MC is not 100% comfortable with this life of luxury and she wants to be socially responsible. I created her as a young woman who came from humble beginnings and preferred her urban lifestyle. Her parents moved her to the suburbs thinking it was best for her, and she hated it. This is important to who her character is and that will be evident as you get to know her better. My Casey is a kind, badass, open-minded woman who will fight for equality. I'd want to be friends with. :)

60 Hurricane Safety Tips: Learn What To Do Before, During & After A Hurricane
Introduction
A hurricane also known as a typhoon (in Indian / Pacific Ocean) is a large storm. It typically is identified by a low-pressure center around which there is high speed storm system, high winds together with thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rains. Countries with major coast lines are especially at rise of such storms. They tend to occur every year.
At the focal point of hurricane, air sinks instead of rises. For a suitably strong storm, the air may sink over a layer deep enough to smother cloud formation, in this way making a clear region also called an "eye" of the storm.
Hurricanes take time to develop, usually a few days or more. They typically begin as thunderstorms then become stronger and stronger and grow in size into large scale weather disturbances.
Hurricanes are effectively followed and checked by climate satellites & weather aircraft due to their regularity and potential for destructive damage. In this way, weather agencies are constantly monitoring hurricane movements. Hence if you are in an affected area, it’s wise to keep up to date with latest warnings.
Hurricanes are defined by 5 categories
Category

Hurricane Season
Northern Hemisphere - May 1st to November 30th for the Atlantic and the Caribbean each year, and the Eastern Pacific hurricane season starts in mid-May.
Southern Hemisphere - Seasons are the opposite of those in the northern, of course, and their hurricane season peaks in March and April.
To help your preparation below are some tips. This is not meant to be exhaustive but more of a guide:-
Before Hurricane Impact
1. Most importantly keep up to date with latest weather updates Useful to have a portable (battery/crank up) radio in case of power failure caused by the hurricane.
2. Check and ensure everyone is accounted for including pets. Also that they know what to do.
3. You could, if you have the funds/space consider purchasing a back up generator with full tank if fuel and a reserve fuel on hand.
4. Prepare for flooding with sandbags, and suitable stock of brooms, mops squeegees, and other absorbents to help remove water and other deposits.
5. If your have trees in your garden or grounds, consider trimming or remove large trees that could fall and damage your or your neighbouring properties.
6. Prior to a storm remove patio furniture, yard decorations and anything not securely fastened.
7. If your child’s school or child care center is in an area at risk from hurricanes, find out how its emergency plans address hurricanes.
8. Inside you home ensure you have enough supplies including spare batteries, first aid kit. Attach tape over windows to prevent any shattering.
You can find suitable types of first aid kits at https://www.uberclimb.com/gear/First-Aid
9. On the exterior of your home, remove/tie down any potential loose objects. Also, close all your home windows and doors.
10.Install permanent shutters to protect windows, doors and skylights from flying debris and wind. You could also, board up windows/doors if required.
11.Strengthen your garage door by replacing it with a pressure-rated model or install a bracing system to prevent the door from failing.
12.If you have to evacuate, ensure all members of your family are accounted for. Check you have full tank of fuel and familiarise with evacuation route & destination. Evacuate as soon as possible when you receive an evacuation notice or you feel in immediate danger.
13.When moving outside avoid potential dangerous places. Especially avoid places where the riverbed is high or close to other waterways. Also, avoid areas likely to have landslides or flooding.
14.Normally, it is advisable to stay indoors whenever possible. Try and avoid venturing outdoors if not necessary. There could be flying debris and other hazards caused by the hurricane.
15.Try and avoid beaches where water can quickly flood in. Also best to avoid harbours areas/, river mouths. These will be venerable at at high tide/high water conditions such as caused by hurricanes.
16.It also advisable to stay away from low lying coastal areas as tides will be much higher and waves much stronger at full tide. Levee breaks also cause serious disaster.
If you are on or near alluvial areas be extra wary. These have increased risks of flooding. Exercise extreme caution because deltas (made of sediment carried by the river and deposited at the mouth of it) and floodplains (region made of accumulated sand carried by regular flooding) can easily be swamped.
18.Also note that river basins and dry riverbeds can also present a serious/life threatening danger of flooding during storms, hence avoid venturing there or leave the area as soon as possible.
Avoid developed land as this is normally made by breaking up hillsides and hence may contain unstable soil and terrain and therefore weaker ground. These areas may slide when downpours or water flooding loosen the ground.
20.Torrential downpour caused by hurricane weather s may cause mountain landslides, and alluvial cones at the foot of a mountain may especially vulnerable. Be especially wary of steep sloping lands of greater than 30° angles and heights of more than 5m may experience a landslide when there are heavy rains.
If you live in mobile home it is safer to go to a shelter.
22. Be sure to fully charge all mobile phones and other battery powered devices. Also, print out emergency contact information in case you lose power.
23.Stock up on groceries, water, medications, and any other necessities such as infant supplies to avoid the need for travel during the storm. You could storage water in a suitable container. One option can be found at
https://www.uberclimb.com/gear/hyrdration/naturehike-food-grade-water-container-large-capacity
24.Ideally purchase appliances that come with built in surge protection or consider a surge protected sockets power strips to plug your electrical devices.
25.Have some emergency cash in case you need to purchase items in areas where there is no power.
26.Check and repair (if necessary) roof drains, gutters and gaps in walls.
27.Remove TV and radio antennas as well satellite dishes from roof areas.
28.Ensure that any storm drains, culverts and catch basins are cleared of debris.
29.Prior to evacuation, bring identification, insurance papers, and other important documents for every family member in your family/group. Obey all special traffic signs and law enforcement orders. Bring adequate water, snacks, cash, and medications.
30.Consider creating a family communications plan that can help ensure that everyone knows how to connect and where to meet during an emergency.
31.Identify a family member or friend to serve as an out-of-state contact so all family members have a single point of contact. Write down or capture two contact methods for this individual such as telephone, cell phone, e-mail address, or social media. Determine safe places where your family can go for protection or to reconnect if separated.
32.Consider signup with American Red Cross Safe and Well social media app. Learn about the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) National Emergency Family Registry and Locator System.
33.Remember, texting may work best before, during, and after a disaster as a text message may be more likely to reach the recipient as it requires far less bandwidth to send than making a phone call.
34.Make sure that everyone, including children, knows how and when to call 9-1-1 for emergency help. Remember, only call 9-1-1 if there is a life-threatening emergency.
35.Store at least one emergency contact under the names “In Case of Emergency” or “ICE” for all mobile phones and devices. This will help someone identify your emergency contact if needed.
36.Those with special medical needs such as oxygen, dialysis etc should go to special needs shelters only. These typically only provide medical monitoring and limited medical care. Bring a caregiver if possible.
It is good preparation to build a storm shelter or tornado safe room. The safest place may be a small, interior, windowless room such as a closet or bathroom on the lowest level of the structure.
38.If possible ensure you have appliance thermometers in your refrigerator and freezer.
Where possible, store food on shelves that will be safely out of the way of (contaminated) water in case of flooding.
Purchase flood insurance in advance of the storm.
41.Create a disaster preparedness kit filled with critical supplies, including important documents and medications. You can find a list here.
42.It is advisable to keep your pets in a designated area in your home. Ensure to place enough water and food in that area. If your pet has special care needs, make sure to provide it. Animals, just like humans, can also feel scared.
During The Hurricane
43.Keep up-to-date on weather status especially in your area.
44.Shut down all gas fired equipment and shut off main gas values.
45.Conserve your cell phone battery by reducing the brightness of your screen, placing your phone in “airplane” mode, and closing unnecessary apps that you do not need.
46.Shut down all non-critical and non-essential electrical equipment.
47.Stay in a secure room and away from windows.
48.If your power goes out, report your outage immediately to your local power company.
Be aware, it typically takes about two feet of rushing water to carry away most vehicles including sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and trucks.
After Hurricane
Ensure that the storm has completely passed before venturing outside.
Also, stay away from downed power lines, flooded areas, and debris. Treat all fallen wires and anything touching them as though they are energized/live. Immediately report downed lines to your power company.
52.If your power is cut, listen to your local radio stations for information and instructions.
If you are encountering hot weather, close drapes and blinds on the sunny side of your house, drink plenty of fluids, take your pets to a cool basement location, and go to an air-conditioned civic center, mall, or library if necessary to stay cool.
54.Remain patient. Every electric company has a detailed plan for restoring electrical service after a power outage.
If possible, try and turn your refrigerator and freezer to the coldest setting. Also, to help ensure your food will keep longer, try and minimise opening the fridge door as much as possible if the power goes out.
56.Check if your local community has a hurricane response plan.
57.Do not move seriously injured individuals. There may be falling debris even more likely if you have high rise buildings.
58.Provide search and rescue personnel with last known location and descriptions of any missing victims.
59.Clear out roof drains, and remove debris from roofs.
60.Check refrigerated items from spoilage if there has been a power failure.
On entering your home do an inspection of every room. However, be careful in entering every room. Keep a lookout for reptiles or other wild animals that may have been driven by floodwaters to higher ground. If you happen to find one, don’t try and handle the animal - instead contact local wildlife authority or agency.

Gen Con 2018 Survival Guide
This guide is the 2018 version of a guide that I did in both 2016 and 2017. My goal has always been to put a lot of useful Gen Con information in one place for beginners. Gen Con can be a confusing convention because of the incredibly amount of variety available to attendees, and it really requires some preparation before attending. The worst thing you can do as a beginner is to just show up and expect everything to run smoothly. My best advice for newbies is to add some structure to your day (1 or 2 events), keep plenty of open time for exploring, and then try to utilize open gaming and special events during the evenings, depending on your interests.
I've also found that many folks who have been attending for years still mostly only focus on the exhibit hall, so there might be some new information here even for those people. Gen Con is MUCH more than just the exhibit hall, but it takes some planning to find all the open gaming and extra fun stuff.

Future Show Dates
-Gen Con 2019: Aug 1 - 4, 2019
-Gen Con 2020: July 30 - Aug 2, 2020
-Gen Con 2021: Aug 5 - 8, 2021
-Gen Con 2022: Aug. 4 - 7, 2022
General Tips -Registration and badge pickup starts on Wed at noon and is open 24 hours from that point on. There will be a line at noon on Wed, but it will quickly die down. The shortest wait time is in the early afternoon (or very late night) on Wed. It is far preferable to register Wed night rather than Thursday morning. -Try not to register on Thursday morning if you can avoid it, it gets very busy. Also give yourself time to get through the registration line. It’s best not to schedule any events at 9am, especially if you get there at say, 8:30am. -After you pick-up your badge, don't forget to pick up your coupon book (it’s a separate line). The coupon book is a great value, and includes a lot of freebies for the exhibit hall, local restaurants, and other assorted things. -Don't bother lining up to enter the exhibit hall before it opens on Thursday unless you're desperate to race for some new release game or promo that might sell out. Honestly, it’s hot, uncomfortable, and claustrophobic. Wait until 10:15 or so after the initial crush has died down. If you want to watch the opening ceremony it’s far nicer to watch from the 2nd floor balcony. -Make sure to pack some snacks and bring a water bottle. Water gets hard to come by, and the vending machines will often sell out.
-Outlets can be hard to find inside the convention center, so bring a portable battery pack if you think you’ll need it.
-Try not to carry around tons of bags of new games. We've found that this ruins our con experience. Only buy games when you know you're on your way back to your hotel. If you’re not staying downtown, try to find somebody that will let you store your purchases for the day. Or at the very least bring the back to your car instead of walking around the convention with heavy bags all day. Also, don't be that person dragging a rolling suitcase. They are annoying for everybody. -Use hand sanitizer regularly, colds tend to spread quickly at game conventions. Probably a good idea to pack some personal care items if you expect to be away from your hotel for most of the day.
-Programs are available in multiple kiosks near the registration line. We always grab one as a collector’s item, but for practical purposes, this mobile app is much easier to use to find events:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/unofficial-gen-con/id1135623179?mt=8
-Many downtown hotels are connected to the Indy convention center via a skywalk system, so it might be a good idea to learn how to move between the skywalks prior to the convention. Especially if its really hot or rainy outside, and you want to stay indoors:
https://www.visitindy.com/indianapolis-connected-hotels
Food and Drink -Most of the Gen Con food trucks are located on Georgia Street, just outside the main entrance to the convention center. Additionally, some are also located along S. Capitol ave. You can see a map here:
https://www.gencon.com/forums/24-travel-housing-and-dining-2017/topics/7920-food-truck-schedule
(The final map for 2018 will be posted a few weeks before the convention)
-Here are some recommended Indy food trucks:
https://foursquare.com/top-places/indianapolis/best-food-trucks
They are nice, but there is a long wait during peak times. Only use the food trucks at odd hours! You'll thank me later when you're not covered in sweat after waiting 40 minutes for a slice of pizza. -The convention center food is overpriced and generally very subpar. With so many good options nearby, I don’t recommend the convention center food for anything other than a quick cup of coffee. -Use the nearby restaurants. There are a lot of them within walking distance. Restaurants with theme menu's, decorations and freebies (sponsored by Gen Con exhibitors):
-On Wed night on Georgia Street, there is always a beer tapping/opening party. In addition, you can find various events going on during the week:
https://www.gencon.com/experience/georgiast
-Scotty's Brewhouse (better food than the RAM, sponsored by Paizo)
http://www.scottysbrewhouse.com/index.php?src=directory&view=Locations&srctype=detail&refno=72&category=locations
-The RAM (nearby, but very crowded, mediocre food and service, only use at non-peak times, sponsored by Privateer Press).
http://www.theram.com/locations/in-indianapolis/
-The Tavern on South turns into the Munchkin Tavern sponsored by SJG.
http://tavernonsouth.com/
Other good options: -Indiana City Market (a healthy walk, but the options are fantastic, it’s similar to the Columbus market for those of you who go to Origins, though smaller). There is also a farmers market on Wed if you arrive to Gen Con a day early.

http://www.indycm.com/farmers-market/
-Haveli Indian Cuisine (buffet, great food, very fast, close to the convention center).
http://www.haveliindiancuisineindy.com/cpsiteframepage.lasso?-token.lpuserref=123580.113129
-Claddagh Irish Pub (hardly ever a wait for food, also delicious).

-Yard House (chain, but lots of beer options, food is only ok).
http://www.yardhouse.com/locations/in/indianapolis/indianapolis-circle-centre/8360
-Cafe Patachou (great breakfast option).
http://cafepatachou.com/
-Rathskellar (Bavarian food and music, walkable, but a bit farther away)
http://www.rathskeller.com/
-Bru Burger Bar (Good burgers and beer)
http://www.bruburgerbar.com/
-St. Elmo’s Steakhouse (upscale, famous for their shrimp cocktail and being on an episode of Parks and Rec):
https://www.stelmos.com/
-Palomino (upscale Mediterranean, with vegan options)
https://palomino.com/index.php?c=indianapolis
Coffee:
-Bee Coffee Roasters (Best coffee nearby, caters to Gen Con, but very busy)
http://www.beecoffeeroasters.com/
-Hubbard and Cravens (coffee and tea shop, centrally located)
https://www.hubbardandcravens.com/
-Cups Coffee and Tea (new place, opening on N Illinois St)

There are Starbucks’s in the following connected hotels:
-Marriot, Sheraton, J.W. Marriot, Hyatt Regency
Play Games -If you're a fan of Board Game media outlets like the Dice Tower, Secret Cabal or Shut Up and Sit Down you might get the impression that Gen Con is primarily a trade show, based solely on their news coverage and interviews. I’ve been listening to these channels for years, and I can confidently say they don’t understand the convention from an average attendee’s perspective. They only understand it from a media and promotion perspective. Most BG media outlets focus on the new release games at the convention, and hardly ever explore the gaming at the convention. They will often say "it’s hard to play games at Gen Con". Nothing is farther from the truth. The truth is that Gen Con is primarily about playing games, you just need to explore the event list and open gaming areas and venture out into those places. Media folks choose to do media related things at the convention, and they don’t actively seek out areas to play games. My goal here is to help you find out where and how to play games easily and successfully.
People at Gen Con are playing games at EVERY available room in the following locations:
-ICC first floor -ICC 2nd floor
-Lucas Oil Stadium
-Lucas Oil walkway -Union Station -Hyatt Regency -Crown Plaza -Embassy Suites -JW Marriot -Marriot downtown -Omni -Westin
In contrast, the exhibit area is less than ½ the total area of just the ICC first floor, and less than 1/10 of the total convention. The vast majority of the rest of the space (multiple ballrooms, every room in the ICC, and all convention space in Lucas Oil Stadium and ALL of the 8 connected hotels) is mostly gaming or related events. Gen Con is basically a gaming city. -It's not hard to play games at Gen Con, but unlike smaller “open play” conventions, you have to do a little planning in advance. You have 4 options: gaming in the exhibit hall, official open gaming, events, and unofficial open gaming. Events -Use the following website to find events: http://gencon.eventdb.us/
You can see new events as they are added to the event list here:
http://gencon.eventdb.us/changeList.php
-Or the following app:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/unofficial-gen-con/id1135623179?mt=8
Both are mobile friendly and will be available at the convention. -Try and schedule a couple of events each day, but absolutely don't overbook yourself. It's important to have some structure to your day, but you're also going to want time to explore all of the interesting stuff around you. For beginners I would suggest less than 4 hours of events each day. -Purchase some generic tickets so you can jump in on a game that is short on players. Generic tickets allow you to just jump into an event that still needs players, without booking in advance. Each ticket has a value of $2.00, so if the event is $6.00 you’ll need three tickets. The best place to do this is in the event ballrooms for Board, CCG and Mini events, and the Lucas Oil stadium. If you're into RPG's, they use the ballrooms on the 2nd floor (Paizo) or the connected hotels (Westin, Hyatt, J.W. Marriot etc.). -Unused tickets for scheduled events can be used as generic tickets at other events. Your event organizers should know this, but sometimes you need to explain it. If you miss an event, you can still get your money back this way. -Take note that the Board + Card game categories are at this point the majority of events at the convention. Even now, there are lots of spaces available to play interesting board games. -Don't schedule back-to-back events, especially if one is in the ICC and another is in a hotel. Give yourself some time to travel, and recognize that sometimes games run long. Tournaments are especially notorious for running over time. The Magic CCG events ran by Past Times typically run an hour or two longer then they should, mainly because they are very disorganized.
-Make sure to get to your event location 10 minutes or so before it starts. Especially since there may be people that are trying to get in with generic tickets. If you’re not on time, your spot might be given away to somebody with generics. Open Gaming -The official place for open board gaming is the library and pick-up play area (under the Isle of Misfit events). This year it will be located on the floor of the Lucas Oil Stadium. It's a pretty good deal if you're going to stay there for a large block of time. Most people use this area to find other folks that want to just open game. Like other conventions, there are flags indicating "players wanted". The library is large, but will lack new releases and many euro classics. It's a step below the CABS library at Origins, but has been growing considerably in quantity and quality.
-Starting in 2018, open gaming space is available at the J.W. Marriot:
Location: JW Mariott: Grand Ballrooms 5 and 6
Hours: Thursday 8 am to Sunday 4 pm
Library tickets can be purchased here:
http://gencon.eventdb.us/title.php?EventType=ZED&Title=Gen+Con+Games+Library+%26+Pick-Up+%26+Play+Area
You can track the new additions to the library on their Facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/boardgameslibrary/
-Games on Demand events are for open RPG gaming (once again under Isle of Misfit events):
http://gencon.eventdb.us/title.php?EventType=ZED&Title=Games+on+Demand
-LARPS on Demand:
http://gencon.eventdb.us/title.php?EventType=ZED&Title=Freeform+LARPs+on+Demand
There are TONS of open gaming opportunities sponsored by companies or by game groups. Many of them are free. Here are some highlights for this year: -The Rio Grande room is always free to play games. They will often provide free food as well (located on the 2nd floor of the ICC):
http://gencon.eventdb.us/title.php?EventType=ZED&Title=Rio+Grande+Free+Play
-The Nerd Nighters are sponsoring a free "nerd night" for charity event, which will be mostly open board gaming, but also raffles and auctions:
http://gencon.eventdb.us/event.php?GameCode=ZED18140541
-BGG is hosting a "hot games" room for the 3rd time at Gen Con. This will include open play of new release games for 2 hour blocks of time: http://gencon.eventdb.us/title.php?EventType=ZED&Title=BGG+Hot+Games+Room
-AEG big game night http://gencon.eventdb.us/title.php?EventType=ZED&Title=AEG%27s+Big+Game+Night

-Gamecrafter Community Game Night

-Various game nights sponsored by Stonemaier Games
http://gencon.eventdb.us/title.php?EventType=ZED&Title=Euro+Game+Night
-Carnival of the Damned

-Puffing Billy Ribbon (train games)
http://gencon.eventdb.us/event.php?GameCode=ZED18129180
Unofficial open gaming -The Gen Con hashtag #genconpug is used by many to find potential players. It's a great resource. -You and your friends can use any open table in the gaming ballrooms if they are not being used for scheduled events. Just go to the appropriate HQ desk (Board Game, CCG, Mini, RPG) and ask for an open table. There are tons of tables open past 7pm and before noon, but very few during peak times. -The hotel lobbies at all surrounding hotels are gaming hot spots. You can often get in on games this way. -Wed night open gaming is mostly in hotel lobbies, the Union Station, and the food court tables in the ICC.
-The corridor between the ICC and Lucas Oil Stadium is lined by vintage arcade games near the ICC, but then later by open gaming tables towards the stadium. This is a nice quiet area for open gaming. Exhibit Hall
-The 2018 map can be found here:
http://files.gencon.com/2018.ExhibitHallMap.pdf
This is a nice list of all the exhibitors and most of their websites:
https://www.livingdice.com/11705/gencon-2018-vendor-and-exhibitor-link-list/
-ALL gaming in the exhibit hall is free. Just make sure you know if they are allowing full games, or only shortened demo versions before you start. Many companies will let you play the full game, but not all. -Thursday and Saturday are the busiest. Friday and Sunday are the slowest and the best option for moving well through the exhibit hall and getting in on demo games. -Many companies run special (free) events at their booths. Flying Frog Games for example has Shadows of Brimstone play and painting events all convention long that are not advertised in the event list. However, these in booth events are often printed in the onsite program book. -Many companies give out promos at their booths, but not all of them announce it! You should always ask if there are promos while you're purchasing an item. -Just about all the exhibitors take credit cards. But don't use credit, bring cash. The wireless in the ICC is very slow and often goes down. If you try and pay by card, you'll constantly run into problems. Cash is more flexible, faster, and helps lines move quicker. You can haggle with vendors and resellers, but not with the publishers (or at least you shouldn't). -If you are trying to quickly maneuver through the exhibit hall, try and avoid the following booths while walking since they create bottlenecks: -FFG -Paizo -Asmodee
Unless of course one of those booths is your destination. Walking along the outside of the exhibit hall tends to be fastest if you need to get somewhere fast. More specifically, walking along the back wall is the easiest way to get around. In general, it’s always slow moving in the exhibit hall, so plan accordingly. -Make sure to check out the art show in the exhibit hall, even if you aren't planning on buying anything. Many of the artists are really talented. You can pay the artists directly, and if you ask they usually have no problem signing it for you. -Feel free to take pictures of cosplayers (with their permission, always) outside the exhibit hall, but NOT IN THE EXHIBIT HALL. If you do this, everyone at the convention will hate you. This is one of the main reasons why traffic slows down in the exhibit hall.
-While we’re at it, please be respectful of everyone in costume. They want to enjoy the convention as well. Take pictures when they are posing, but not when they are trying to play a game or shopping. Use your people skills. Constant picture demands are really frustrating for people that want to enjoy the convention as well. -If you're interested in new releases, be sure to ask which days/times the booth will be releasing them for sale. Publishers will often follow a schedule, e.g., 100 copies each morning at 11am. Or 200 on Thursday at 10am, and another 200 at Saturday at 10am.
Mega Games, Entertainment Events, and other Cool Stuff
-I think it’s important as part of your Gen Con experience to find a few special events that you could never do at a small convention. Here are some ideas for 2018.
-National Security Decision Making Games
http://gencon.eventdb.us/title.php?EventType=ZED&Title=National+Security+Decision+Making+Contemporary+Crisis+Game
http://gencon.eventdb.us/title.php?EventType=ZED&Title=National+Security+Decision+Making+Doomsday+Scenario+Game
-Two Rooms and Boom
http://gencon.eventdb.us/title.php?EventType=ZED&Title=Two+Rooms+%26+A+BOOM+Weekend+Ribbon
-Escape Rooms (we find the ones ran by CU adventures inside the convention to be the best)
http://gencon.eventdb.us/title.php?EventType=ZED&Title=Castle+Dracula%3A+A+Supernatural+Escape+Room
http://gencon.eventdb.us/title.php?EventType=ZED&Title=The+Cabin%3A+A+Supernatural+Escape+Room
http://gencon.eventdb.us/title.php?EventType=ZED&Title=Magischola%3A+Detention+Break+Out+Escape+Room
http://gencon.eventdb.us/title.php?EventType=ZED&Title=Escape+Room%3A+Art+Gallery
http://gencon.eventdb.us/title.php?EventType=ZED&Title=Escape+Room%3A+Contagion
http://gencon.eventdb.us/title.php?EventType=ZED&Title=Escape+Room%3A+Space+2112+Premium+Room
-Gen Con Survivor
http://gencon.eventdb.us/title.php?EventType=ZED&Title=Survivor+Gen+Con%3A+The+Blessed+%26+the+Cursed
-Ruins of Atlantis Masquerade Ball
http://gencon.eventdb.us/title.php?EventType=ENT&Title=Ruins+of+Atlantis+Masquerade+Ball
-Gen Con Dance
http://gencon.eventdb.us/title.php?EventType=ENT&Title=Gen+Con+Dance%3A+Eight+Bit+Bash%21
Parking and Transportation -If you're commuting into the convention, don't even try and get a parking space nearby unless you arrive before 8am. It won't be possible and you'll get really frustrated trying to enter the parking garages with hordes of people wandering by. Find one that doesn't allow overnight parking (those fill first) a good 5-10 blocks away and just walk. -If you're staying downtown and just need to stash your car for a few days overnight, you can use one of the nearby (e.g., mall) garages if you don't mind paying $25/night, or you can use an uncovered lot a good 5-10 blocks way for $5-10/night.
-Park Whiz and Spot Hero are good resources for finding parking spots:
https://www.parkwhiz.com/
https://spothero.com/
-Lyft is good in Indianapolis, and Gen Con has a special partnership and discounts with them this year:
https://www.gencon.com/press/lyftpartnership2018
-Gate 10 parking is the official parking vendor for Gen Con. They are located about a 25 minute walk from most downtown hotels, and also offer a shuttle, but in our experience it can be pretty slow:
http://gencon.eventdb.us/title.php?EventType=ZED&Title=5+Day+Parking+Pass+%28Wed+Aug+1st+to+Sun+Aug+5%29
Auction -The Gen Con auction is fantastic, and is a long-lasting tradition at the convention. It's located across the hallway from the exhibit hall on the first floor of the ICC. -All items need to be listed in advance at: http://www.livegameauctions.com/ -You cannot spontaneously bring items to sell that you did not preregister at the website above. Don't be that guy who wheels 50 board games into the convention center to sell without preregistering them, you'll have to wheel them straight back out. -The live auction runs from Thursday morning to Saturday night, and there are multiple theme sessions. The charity/collectable auction tends to have interesting and valuable items.
-They will post the schedule outside the main door on Thursday. -People can list items in the auction store if they are below $50 (prereg still required). This is the best place to get amazing deals at the entire convention. There is often a line to get into the store, especially at peak times. Keep checking back at the auction store throughout the convention, because items that don’t sell via regular auction will get added to the store.
-Check out this forum in June and especially July. There will be a virtual flea market for 2018, and math trade as well:
https://boardgamegeek.com/forum/13/boardgamegeek/trades
Explore and try things outside your comfort zone -Gen Con fills every single room and all event space in the following: -ICC first floor -ICC 2nd floor -Union Station -Hyatt Regency -Crown Plaza -Embassy Suites -JW Marriot -Marriot downtown -Omni -Westin -Explore these areas! You'll often find weird little events, people doing silly things, or gaming options you didn't know existed. This is the real Gen Con, and it goes far beyond rushing for new releases in the exhibit hall. -The hallway going to the Lucas Oil stadium is lined with vintage arcade games, and you can also do all sorts video gaming in other areas, usually found on the 1st floor of the ICC:
http://gencon.eventdb.us/title.php?EventType=ZED&Title=Virtual+Reality+Tactical+Shooting+Range
http://gencon.eventdb.us/gameSystem.php?EventType=EGM&GameSystem=Various
http://gencon.eventdb.us/gameSystem.php?EventType=EGM&GameSystem=Tesla+2+Battletech+Pods
-There are tons of newbie friendly RPG games for Call of Cthulhu, Dungeons and Dragons, and Pathfinder. Same for miniature games. 2 hour “learning events” are very common, and a good way to get a taste of a brand new gaming system. It’s usually pretty easy to find space in these events, or get in with generics. -True Dungeon and anime events are in the stadium. Even if you didn't sign up for True Dungeon I would recommend taking a walk down to the stadium and checking out their free area. It's a pretty incredible fantasy set-up they have (think haunted house but for D&D). If you do sign up for True Dungeon as a newbie, make sure to arrive 20-30 minutes early. There will be people available to help you make your character. It's extremely simple and you don't need to worry about the rules, it’s very intuitive. -The area outside on Georgia Street will have live entertainers, parties and other special events each evening.
-Check out the 2nd floor of the ICC, you'll often find underused areas: -Rio Grande Room -Open Crafting Room -The Quiet room (room 211) if you need to relax and get away from the crowds. -The mini paint-and-take (free) and the display cases with the winners of the various mini painting competitions.
-Kids activities are located at the Lucas Oil Stadium this year. There will be large “kids zone”, but always ask about supervision and don’t just drop your kid off without asking:
http://gencon.eventdb.us/category.php?EventType=KID
-Werewolf and other social games (two rooms and a boom, the resistance) pop up like weeds in the ICC hallways starting around 11pm. Don't feel weird about asking to join, these groups are accommodating to everybody. The more the merrier. -The convention is open 24 hours and there is always people around playing games, though it dies down between 3am - 8am. Many restaurants and bars are open most of the night in downtown Indy, some like Scotty's pretty much never close during the convention. White Castle and Steak and Shake are good last resorts if you’re desperate for late night food quickly.
-Check out the seminar list, especially if you’re interest in game design, writing, or industry trends:
http://gencon.eventdb.us/category.php?EventType=SEM
-Most importantly, go outside your comfort zone. Try something completely new. Do a demo of a new type of game in the exhibit hall, try a totally new type of event like the National Security Decision Making Games, an Escape Room, or type of board game you normally wouldn’t play. GC offers plenty of opportunity to try new things. Hope this helps!

2. Freelancer
Freelancer.com is a marketplace filled with individuals and companies who like to work on client’s requirements. Although it is same as Fiverr, it is different in the way you get your project based on your skills – In Freelancer, a client posts his job on a feed along with all information related to the project, including the budget he has for the project. Freelancers who are interested in taking up the listed project must bid on it. The client will individually connect with ones who he feels the best and allocates the project to him. In my experience, Freelancer can be too taxing for beginners, however, if you are ready to bid at lower compared to others, higher are the changes you will make some really good money from Freelancer.
3. Etsy
Are you a good craftsman? Do you have a special talent in craft forms that you can showcase to your prospective customers? If yes, Etsy is the place where you can sell your stuff online. For artistic folks, Etsy is the website to make money online over the internet.

Some commissions can be as high as $200 per sale made from your link. If you are good at blogging ShareASale is the place you want to register with.
5. Mturk
So, what is MTurk all about? MTurk is the short form for Amazon Mechanical Turk. MTurk platform lists various Human Intelligence Tasks or HITs in short, which can be picked by workers to choose micro-level jobs, complete them and submit. For each submission, workers are paid.

One of the challenges when we get into preparing for disaster is keeping everything neat and organized. In some cases, we’re trying to maintain our own or a spouse’s sanity and keep some of our preparations neat, tidy and organized without being in plain sight while short on space, either square footage or because we rarely allow something to leave our grasp. Beyond the ease in counts and condition checks, and avoiding a hoarder’s larder, organization can help us with both rotating supplies and in some cases even rationing our supplies should we fall on hard times.
Happily, there’s lots of stuff out there that can help us. Repurposing some items that are inexpensive, commonly found curbside and at flea markets or yard sales, or that we might already have laying around can help us maintain that organization without breaking the bank.
Maps & Rolls
Keeping our wrapping paper neat and tidy might not appeal to preppers, but we can steal some of the ideas out there for keeping our maps, charts, and our property plats accessible and tidy. There’s one where you take an old wire shelf and affix it vertically to a wall or door instead of horizontally. The 250ml wine boxes are ideal for keeping both maps and wrapping paper contained and neat, and most alcohol retailers are simply delighted to let you have boxes.
Cutting the bottoms out of hanging shoe organizers lets us customize height. That one has added benefits because you can leave pouches intact to keep map pens, sprays, and dry erase markers and erasers right there with them. It also allows some mobility, so they can be re-hung by a work board, in a radio or control room, or at the desk and table where you do your planning.
Hanging Shoe Organizers
You have to watch the weight in these guys, but otherwise, the sky is the limit. They can hook us up in pretty much all wedges of our preparedness “health” wheels. I’ve got some in use for “daily” life, too.
One’s in the kitchen keeping small packets of instant cereal and snack foods and the last bar of one kind or another from either getting lost in the abyss or from having the boxes continue to eat up space. One’s for winter, and keeps hats, scarves, and gloves neat and organized. The bottom row holds some quick slip-on slippers for household members and the dogs’ various booties. There’s another set up with each person’s preferred garden and yard work sets of gloves and pocket detritus.
For preppers, the value goes up further. With stick-on labels or clothespins, we can use them to track dates for at-a-glance organization. We can also take a space where we would be limited to boxes or shelves and turn it into basically a rack for them. A couple of freebie curbside-pickup filing cabinets, a bar or two to go across the top, and we can string our organizers on dowels or sturdy branch/sapling trimmings.
The filing cabinets here are actually reading nooks, but it gives you an idea of how the addition of a plank (freebie-pickup shipping pallets, walls/shelves from curbside bookshelves) and a curtain (surviving sheet from a wrecked bedding set) can keep it from being “ugly” even if it’s out in a home where somebody cares. If appearance is less of a concern, some suit hangers and any ol’ pole can be hung in sheds, basements or a storage room to accomplish the same – a flip or slide-through storage area for small items.
Those items can be anything. It can be a great way to keep veggie seeds separated by planting/growing season and year. We can use them for sewing supplies or art supplies. Instant drink packets, seasoning packets and shakers, granola bars, little packets of vitamin-rich gummy treats, boxes and packets of pudding or gelatin mixes, and other kitchen items fit easily. We can arrange them to be a general category like snacks or spices, or we can set each up by expiration or best-by date.
Educational goodies, supplies for the radio room or office, entertainment items, hygiene items, and especially first-aid and medical items that do start separating or losing efficiency are all other options for storing someplace we can find and see them easily and check those dates without pawing through boxes.
We can use hanging closet organizers much the same way to buy some extra space, although they’re not as handy for the tiny little items and still have the weight restrictions.
We can also use them to help us ration, just like we can with canning jars. We can pack each with a week, a month, or a quarter’s “goodies”. That can be seasonings or instant helpers like gravy or dressing mix. It can also be things like chocolate chips, tea bags or a brick of coffee, smaller packets of cookie, edible cake decorations, or Slim Jim’s. Some of the shoe organizers are big enough we could even seed them with fresh games like Qwixx or Dog Bites Man, new decks of cards, some specialty feel-good lotion or chap stick, or something seasonal to brighten the mood.
Another option is to use a shoe organizer as a pre-staging area. Rather than those things that jump in buggies getting tossed in a box or drawer for a while, they can get slotted by category. It can also help with those items that seems like a great idea but then hide when we want them. That can be everything from eyeglass repair kits and those mini sewing kits, to things like outlet and light-switch wall plates, overhead pull cords, and those plastic twisty-cap wire connectors that like to multiply in drawers and tool rooms.
Curtain Rods
While we’re hanging things to improve our organization, we can keep an eye out for curtain rods. With some rings and-or big S-hooks, they can help us in all kinds of spaces. We can mount them in our bathrooms – and our outdoor camping/solar showers – to drape bathroom organizers and avoid having stuff sit on ledges and floors. With hooks affixed to light baskets and tubs, what we can hang for easy access increases even further. Those baskets can easily be the bathroom organizers or oddball dishwasher or silverware baskets that show up here and there or wire or plastic bins form the dollar store, and get used for school and office supplies, kitchen spices, each individual’s hankies and bandanas, or anything else we like.
We can arrange them under cabinets or against walls to keep items like spools of thread, bungee cords, and weed-eater wire accessible. With hooks or loops, we can add our extension cords, gloves, and tools. By our doors, they’re another easy way to keep hats and gloves organized, and the airflow they’ll get will let them dry faster.
While I specified curtain rods, be flexible while we’re upcycling and repurposing. I see swingsets and bed frames on freebie listings and by the curb on a regular basis. Tree trimmings can yield nice, straight pieces. The scrap guys in town will let us have pretty much whatever we want at about a halfway between their cost and sale price. Be flexible.
Garage & Shed Storage
We can use all kinds of oddball wrecked, found, used, or inexpensive items for storage, although the garage and shed where we don’t have to hear anything from family members really shines. We can use coat hangers and hooks with a piece of looped rope, chain, or bungee cord to keep heavy extension cords, hoses, and heavy rope neatly coiled and off the flat surfaces. A wrecked binder offers three rings that can hold anything, from our bungee cords to cleaned cans with a hole punched that can then hold our paint brushes, garden pruners, gloves, or safety glasses.
You have to pretty much murder somebody to find them now, but a plastic 2L soda bottle is awesome for allowing us to stack and move bottles and for keeping stuff in a pickup or van right where you want it. They can also be screwed flat to a wall to use the holes as shallow storage nodes, but they’re too shallow to have much value for me there. Instead, see if a plumbing outfitter or company has PVC scrap. It’s usually deeper and you can cobble that into a honeycomb with some screws and get a lot more use out of it.
Throw-Aways
All kinds of things that hit our recycling and trash have other uses, particularly in keeping our storage neat and tidy. The cardboard boxes that soda comes in get a lot of play for upcycling into soup and veggie can organizers, but we can also just slit the top off entirely. Swiffer pad tubs are awesome for stacking and labeling the sides, but really only for lightweight stuff. Old-school laundry detergent boxes with the flip-up lid and the little plastic handle are sturdy, stackable, and you can hook that handle around a screwdriver on your belt or a carabiner for hands-free carrying. Plastic coffee cans, jugs, powdered parmesan shakers, and creamer tubs are hugely versatile.
Indoors or out, they can help us organize absolutely anything. Arrange packets of Lipton and Knorr sides, seeds, Heartgard and Frontline, or spice blends. Keep extension cords, tow cables, tie-down straps, or Christmas lights neat and tidy, and ready to deploy again (which buys time and space for other stuff). They can also help us keep kits of commonly replaced items together.
The plastic options can help us keep pests out of dry pantry goods and little packets of drinks or boxes of pudding. Those plastic bottles are also handy for rationing out things like brown and white sugar that last forever in storage, or once we bust into bulk bags or buckets of snack foods and dry goods.
Drink bottles get a lot of play for organizing wire, ribbon, and cord. If you have access to wide-mouth juice or sports drink bottles, those make excellent ways to keep some ammo in a bag nice and dry – but don’t try it with narrow-neck water and soda bottles, not even with .22 LR. There’s nothing wrong with using them for beans or grains, either, since they stack up like cordwood well.
Mostly, though, I think people seriously underestimate how much water they need. I may be the only person affected by Uncle Murphy on a regular basis, but you need water stored even with a well, because you need time to hunt down the problem and repair it if the pump goes down. So, for the most part, I’d rather see soda bottles get used to store water, everywhere, in homes and in vehicles.
Organizing Preparedness Supplies
The time spent in organizing not only makes maintaining our storage a little less daunting and time consuming, but also allows us to better visualize gaps. The sanity boost from neatness and not being overwhelmed by our piles o’ stuff can’t really be overstated, either, and less-involved family is less likely to add to our stresses when they’re not overwhelmed by it all, too. Since there’s so many items out there that we can scrounge for free or little outlay and repurpose, we really don’t have any excuse not to keep our storage organized.

Sell Antiques and Collectables for Earning Delightful Amount
The antique industry is perhaps today, standing at a crossroads. Antiques and collectables New Zealand industry is now throwing endless number of bargaining options for all its customers. Customers will get lots of malls, antiques, and vintage shops and shows throughout the whole country, but to the surprise of industry watchers, top quality artifacts are out of favor with decorators and collectors, which has greatly reduced their market prices. As per the latest news, the website for the Art market, Art net is selling once highly-priced eight-piece George III dining chairs for as low as 500 USD, down from a high of 8000 USD.
Beginning the process of antique selling.
The average antique dealer is currently earning approx 40000 USD per year. Although it is not a get rich quick scheme, it is indeed an excellent way to earn decent money, while being engaged. Antiques and collectables Wellington dealers typically try to sell one of their three mediums like antique shows, malls, online, and brick mortar shops. Now, let us explain all these steps procedurally.
1) Antiques are being sold at a brick and mortar location.
Permanent stores give dealers an exceptional shopping experience, but simultaneously increasing overhead costs. If dealers take stores on rent or mortgage, they will take several years to reach a break-even point. If the store is located in a prime or posh area, where there are plenty of customers, then your sales potential is greatly enhanced, due to higher viewership.
2) Online sale of antiques
Antique selling is done via an online portal like eBay, Ruby Lane, 1stdibs, permits dealers to attract more customers, since it is open to customers in the whole world. Global customers can bid and purchase the antiques online, even after taking into account, higher costs for shipping. If you sell your goods online, then you will require a big warehouse or a large go down, for storing all your antiques. But, the big space, is incapable of entertaining customers for antiques and collectables Auckland, for a big amount.
But besides, selling products online will give less chance, for making a brand. The main reason is that customers online remember the name of the platform, instead of the dealer. The top-class sellers always take exceptional photos and always write accurate descriptions. But, if business owners wish to earn extra income, they can generate a side business, based on Collectables in Rotorua and the online portals can give a big boost to your business.
3) Malls and antique roadshows
One very good technique for boosting sales of Antiques and Collectables Hamilton is by using mobile antique sales since a lot of customers will be able to see your products. On, the flip side, it takes up a lot of time, since you have to move from location to location and also require a storage area for your antiques. So, it is advisable to use an antique mall, where you will be able to store and display all these antiques in one place, where the owner has to pay the mall authorities, a fixed amount for a specific period.
4) Venue combination
Another very good technique of boosting sales is by combining venues. The antique Collectables in Tauranga can combine renting a space in a mall, along with doing roadshows, besides selling online. This will enhance sales and make your business extremely profitable.
5) Future trend of antiques
Antiques, which are older than a century are very rare. If the customer gets an antique, which is older than five decades, but less than a century, is a collectible. Collectables in Christchurch have a lot of value, but it is always worthwhile to observe the difference between categories. The good antique dealers, can very quickly identify in-demand items, and purchase them below market value and later then sell them for profit. Dealers and collectors know the century-old cycle, which antiques follow. For earning profits, the owner should take part when customers stop searching for the present craze.
6) Discovering antiques worth the money
Antique owners must always specialize in a particular kind of items, which will enable very quick brand building and wider customer reach. So, owners will be able to avail of thrift stores, yard sales, consignment shops, for purchasing the top-class antiques.
Conclusion
Due to the drastic fall met in the prices, the customer base has widened to a much younger audience. However, young customers are quite frugal and are minimalists. Most are interested in repurposing and reusing current artifacts, instead of purchasing mass-produced and new pieces. Professional collectors will be able to purchase antiques at cheap prices and sell it at high prices, but also decorators, who can pick up home use pieces, at the cheapest prices in many years.

How Much Does It Cost to Have a Baby? See My Budget
How much does it cost to have a baby? When my husband and I were first floating the idea of expanding our family, it wasn’t easy to find answers to this question. Every Google search led me down a rabbit trail of delivery costs by state and the cost to raise a child from birth to 18 years (sometimes it’s just better not to know that one).
We just wanted to know the full, real picture: how much does a baby cost (including delivery, the baby gear, the lost income, the whole nine yards). Put another way, how much money did we need to set aside in our Baby Fund category in YNAB before bringing a new person into this world?
For anyone not familiar, YNAB stands for You Need a Budget, and it’s the budgeting app that I use (and also where I work part time!). It’s the reason I have all this information in such detailed form.
After planning for and having a baby, I am happy to share the results with you to make your Google hunt a little easier! Listed below is every baby-related dollar we spent over a period of 13 months (from conception through our baby’s first four months of life).
My hope in sharing these numbers is to provide one reference point. You may look at these expenditures and think “Wow, that’s a lot!”, or “Wow, that’s not very much!” Each family’s experience and preferences will be different, but I wanted to give you my experience as I know this information was hard to come by when I was in your shoes.

Curbside pickups can sometimes still benefit well-established, big-spread preppers, but they’re especially big boosts for beginners, people in the ‘burbs, and those still tightly budgeting or branching into new things. This time around, I’m looking at kiddie pools.
They basically fall into two categories: stiff-sided baby pools and several types of soft, flexible pools.
The latter tend to be more fragile and will remain more vulnerable to punctures. Patching kits are handy to have on hand, but save them for packing/camping trips and mattresses, rain gear, and things that cost more than the patching kit does, not a curbside pickup pool.
FlexSeal and duct tape aren’t always good enough in a situation when they’ll stay inundated or mobile, but they work well enough for most uses here.
Patching Tip: Car tires to inflatable pools or floaties, if you’ve got something that’s leaking, grab your garden-pest spray bottle of thick-mix dish detergent and water. Blow up the offender and mist it. As it deflates, bubbles will form around the hole(s).
For little or softer stuff like mattresses, you can speed the process up by pressing on it. For tires, we have to just be patient, but it’s a good excuse to sit quietly with a coffee or beer or have a catch.
Tarps
Pretty much anything we’d do with a tarp, we can do with a kiddie pool. It’ll lack strength over good tarps and the rivets that make attachments secure and easy, but it can get the job done. Especially when all we’re after is a cover, there’s no reason to buy something else.
They excel as ground covers that don’t have to be as wind and weight resistant as our overhead shelters. With a prop and some weights, they’re also quickie shade for dogs or free-range birds.
With a rope or some bungees, we can also use them to shelter animal feeding areas and our hay feeders. Some dry ground and reducing rain loss can decrease feed loss – one of the biggest areas of expense and waste in livestock ownership.
In addition to softies for tarps, we can use the stiff plastic pools to decrease feed waste.
DIY builds using buckets and barrels, cattle panels or wire fencing, and tires abound online. Anything that calls for a cut-down IBC tote, used tire, or lumber platform can be replaced with a kiddie pool. We can also cut down a pool, score it to bend, and fix it to a fence or wall to catch dropped hay.
They can also be used with buckets and barrels to create gravity feeders for grain, pellets, and crumble.
Having a lightweight pool serve as our catchment is especially helpful areas that end up badly wet in winter and spring, or if we’re evacuating with livestock. Hay or grain, a no-waste feeder is even more important when our resources are limited.
Being light and low, they’re also applicable as troughs for pretty much any of our livestock if we’re in drought, rotate pasture quickly, or need to evac.
Tarp-alternative pools can also help us with water catchment. Combining catchment, shade and troughs can seriously decrease labor/energy and water draw during those droughts and evacuations.
We can direct barrel or bucket overflows into pools we can set up permanently or when needed to increase temp storage. Carting a softie in our bag instead of a standard ground cover, we can easily take advantage of rainfall if we run into trouble.
In areas where a roof isn’t super handy, we can stretch them over frames several different ways and throw a weight or tie an edge down to create a dip and direct flow. The added area greatly increases our catchment of clean or cleaner water versus just a bucket or barrel.
Tarps can also be used for dragging stuff around. I wouldn’t suggest pools as a substitute for rough scrub, branchy, or gravelly areas, but in grassy areas they can be handy for moving autumn leaves and cut grasses.
Out in the yard, baby pools can also take the place of tarps in covering our garden beds over the dormant seasons or if we have a heavy rain, wind, or freeze period to contend with, and to cover kill future garden areas or overgrown, weedy beds.
Flexible kiddie pools are also super useful for covering small ponds, hard-formed baby pools, and IBC totes, whether they’re there for entertaining our children, outdoor fish or water plants, or water catchment. They can prevent algae growth, keep birds and dogs our of kid’s cool-off tanks, and prevent blown-in leaves and mowed grasses.
Baby Keepers
Whether we’re talking nearly hairless monkeys or something with fur or feathers, kiddie pools can be super helpful for keeping our babies contained, safe, and clean (okay, cleaner).
The flexible type with a frame can make a decent playpen for mini humans and getting waterfowl some outdoor time.
Some supervision to make sure they don’t gnaw like puppies is required, but the inflatable types are even better for over-sized inchworms. They’re more compact in a bag and vehicle than a fold-up playpen, whether we’re evacuating a wildfire, flood, frigid-winter power outage, or hurricane, heading to grandma’s, camping, or have decided to bug out to the wilds with our midget horde.
They’re not easy to pack and have short sides, but since a lot of hard-plastic pools can be rigged with holes and a rope and are tough enough to drag (especially over snow and lawns), they, too, have some value as a baby pen. (Keep a really good grip on hills … just saying.)
We can drag it out while we garden, harvest an orchard, or complete some outdoor task without worrying about planting our spawn in an ant path, them inching off a blanket, or having wetness soaking up through a blanket and chilling them (which requires washing and-or drying a blanket, too).
*A small baby pool can also do double duty as a washtub for our progeny, their nana dog, and the laundry that naked monkeys and fur babies tend to create.
The tougher, smaller pools can be combined with all kinds of salvaged and inexpensive materials to hold all kinds of babies.
With chip/flake litter, straw, newspaper, or blankets we can use them as bird and bunny brooders, contain puppies (for a while), slow down kittens, and keep lambs, piglets or other animals indoors or closer at hand should they need bottle nursing or to escape sudden and severe cold snaps.
The hard pools have uses for our grown-up fur babies, too. They can be used as a SIP doggy “kitty” box when pets are stuck inside or limited to a porch.
*There are some tips for encouraging well-trained Fido’s that we can discuss if it’s a problem for somebody.
Bird Baths
Baby pools are great for our poultry, although pretty much everything likes a dip on a hot day. They’re not only splash ponds for waterfowl, but also dust baths for chickens, guineas, quail and other birds.
Make sure to include a ramp for young birds and if a surrogate hen might go running in trying to save her goose/duck babies when they do their demented little toddler-stomp charge into the water.
A ramp is a really good idea for any water source, and anytime there are puppies, kittens, or rabbits on the property as well as adult waterfowl and large livestock.
Like pretty much everything else, all kinds of salvage material can be used for those ramps – wire bookshelves, fridge and oven and grill racks, cut-down mattress frame wire, wrapped pieces of decorative scroll from porches…
Holding Water
Baby pools can be excellent for producing duckweed – a pinky-nail sized high-protein aquatic plant that can double its mass in a week, one that can be used for humans, herbivores, or even our omnivore livestock.
To combat the algae problems common to most water-holding uses of baby pools, dojo loaches, plecos, and albino catfish can be especially helpful. If there are no plants in use, pond snails can work, but snails will decimate garden, aquarium, and pond plants as fast as a plague of locust.
Plecos aren’t as common as goldfish and tilapia in aquaponics setups, but they can be useful adds for pretty much any system and they’re tough, resilient fish whose spiny fins and hard skin surface keeps them safe in a wide variety of circumstances.
I’m not a huge fan of baby pools for aquaponics – I prefer tougher and deeper containers – but some people go for it, even in big, multi-building systems. Others go for tiny bootstrap systems, from simply draping lettuce in Solo cups in tank water, to using the pools as rafts.
I don’t mind baby pools for hydroponics, and raft systems can be constructed without any pumps or moving parts. They absolutely excel as a way to keep buckets and grow bags of large plants or up-wicking towers of greens or berries watered, giving us a basin we can fill quickly and move on.
Using them as over sized pot drip trays can also be valuable in retaining nutrient-rich runoff from our pots and planters – catching it in moderate rains and allowing those nutrients to be taken up by the plant roots later.
With drainage holes, they can also be used for soil-based growing. Even shallow pools have plenty of depth for herbs, greens, green peas, and strawberries.
Curbside Pickups: Kiddie Pools
There are probably 101 uses for baby pools, soft or hard plastic, intact or with holes and busted bottoms. Sometimes they’re good enough at something to be worth buying, or they can perform the same function of a more expensive item for greatly decreased outlay. Ideally, though, we’ll be able to salvage our pools by cruising through nearby ‘burbs on trash/recycling pickup days or hitting sites like Freecycle and Craigslist.
Keep an eye out for other things when we do that cruising. Under-the-bed storage totes are close matches for a lot of the hard pools’ purposes. Canopies and painters’ drop cloth will sub in for the soft plastic pools. We’re really only limited by our imagination.

“Sardines in the Sun” by Giacomo Marchione
Moalboal, Philippines.
© Giacomo Marchione. All rights reserved.
“Sardines emerge from a coral wall in cobalt waters just a few yards from the shores of Cebu Island in the Philippines. They move in a single undulating cloud of silver that twists, turns, shrinks, expands and wraps itself around any object that gets in its way. At times, it becomes a thundercloud, blocking out the sun or clapping violently as it suddenly flips its formation to evade a predator.”
“Salt Field Workers” by Matty Karp

“A boatman enjoys the leisure of reading a newspaper on his boat.”
“Affection” by Thomas Chadwick
Florida, USA.
© Thomas Chadwick. All rights reserved.
“This is my favorite black skimmer photo that I have taken in all the years following a little-known colony. Every year I select a nest when the parent is on eggs, then follow that same nest until they fledge. I choose one nest because colonies are chaotic; you will miss some shots by pointing the lens at hundreds of birds. One morning I got into position and lay there for an hour until sunrise when a parent flew in directly to feed the baby. The baby was inches away from me, so I couldn’t get the feeding photo. However, after the baby gobbled down the fish, I captured it running up to the parent and displaying the behavior pictured.”
“Red Chili Pepper Pickers” by Azim Khan Ronnie
Bogra, Bangladesh.
© Azim Khan Ronnie. All rights reserved.
“Countless chili peppers surround laborers in the Bogra district in the north of Bangladesh. More than 2,000 people work in almost 100 chili farms in Bogra in Bangladesh to supply local spice companies with chilies for use in their recipes. Chili peppers are a major part of the Bengali cuisine popular in Bangladesh and are used as part of a combination of spices for various meat dishes, including chicken and beef.”
“Rhino From Chitwan” by Tanya Sharapova
Chitwan National Park, Nepal.
© Tanya Sharapova. All rights reserved.
“There are about 600 rhinos in Chitwan National Park. It was a pure adventure to follow wild rhinos in their natural habitat. The main instructions, in case a rhino ran in my direction, were to climb a tree; if there was no tree, to run zigzags. The red color of the grass comes from my imagination.”
“Summit Eclipse” by Jason Hatfield
Gannet Peak, Wind River Range, Wyoming, USA.
© Jason Hatfield. All rights reserved.
“Mountaineers witness totality of the 2017 eclipse on the highest mountain in its path, 13,809′ Gannett Peak. Deep in the Wind River Range of Wyoming, reaching the summit requires two days of backpacking, a 12+ hour climb day, and crossing two glaciers.”
“Green” by Gareth Bragdon
The Meadows, Edinburgh, UK.

“At the end of the night — after the after-party and the after-after-party — in, yes, the hotel lobby, the bride and groom finally retire to their room. This is the last glimpse of the bride before the door shut.”
“NYC” by Tatiana Borodina
New York, City, New York, USA.
© Tatiana Borodina. All rights reserved.
“This picture was taken during the New Year holiday in NYC from the Roosevelt Island aerial tramway. Despite the rain, there is a festive mood in the frame. Raindrops resemble Christmas balls.”
“Feliz Navidad” by Alexey Kharitonov
Havana, Cuba.
© Alexey Kharitonov. All rights reserved.
“I wandered through downtown. The city was slowly coming to life after Christmas celebrations and was preparing for the New Year. Suddenly I found myself at a small market. When I saw this butcher, sitting among large red pieces of meat dangling from acid-green counter, I pressed the shutter button automatically.”
“Rare” by Sara Jacoby
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA.
© Sara Jacoby. All rights reserved.
“This is Maggie. She has two rare chromosome duplications, one of which she’s the only child on record to have. This photo captures not only her vulnerability, but also the magnitude of the science for which we are so grateful. A little girl and her ‘Gigi’ already way too familiar with hospitals and doctors offices than any child should be.”

3-in-1 Jacket. A jacket that consists of two jacket layers that zip together. You can wear either jacket layer separately, or zip them together for extra warmth and weather protection.
4-Needle Stitching. A finish commonly used on a sleeve or bottom hem that uses four needles to create parallel rows of visible stitching, giving the garment a cleaner, more finished look, as well as adding durability.
4-Way Stretch. A fabric that stretches both on the crosswise and lengthwise grains of the fabric. Also called a mechanical stretch, except mechanical stretch doesn’t use spandex or other stretch yarns.
Air Jet Yarn. A type of open-end spinning that uses a stationary tube in which jets of air are directed to cause fibers to twist thereby forming a yarn. This process definitely influences the soft hand feel of the fabric while maintaining excellent resistance to pilling.
All-Weather Microfiber. Fabric that is tightly woven from an extremely fine poly thread with a suede finish for a luxuriously supple feel. When combined with waterproof coating and full seam sealing, microfiber is 100% waterproof. 100% polyester.
ANSI. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is an organization that promotes standards for industry and government.
ANSI Class 2. An ANSI designation for garments that are intended for activities where greater visibility is necessary during inclement weather. It also covers workers who perform tasks that divert their attention from approaching traffic or puts them in close proximity to vehicles traveling 25 mph or higher.
ANSI Class 3. An ANSI designation for garments that provide the highest level of visibility and are intended for workers who face more serious hazards than Class 2.
Antimicrobial. A term used for a garment that is able to resist, either naturally or chemically, the effects of microbial secretions put off by the human body, resisting odor and increasing garment life.
Anti-Pill Finish. A treatment applied to garments primarily to resist the formation of little balls on the fabric’s surface due to abrasion during wear. See Pilling.
Arc Rating. A value of the energy necessary to pass through any given fabric to cause with 50% probability a second- or third-degree burn. This value is measured in calories/cm2. Simply put, the Arc rating determines the protective characteristics of the fabric. The higher the Arc rating value, the greater the protection.
Articulation. A design detail usually in the shoulders, elbows or knees where limbs bend to increase mobility for greater ease of movement.
ATPV. Stands for Arc Thermal Protective Value: a rating of the Arc burn protection capability of a garment. The higher the Arc rating, the more protection a garment gives because it has a higher resistance to catching on fire. The ATPV is expressed in calories/cm2 and represents the thermal exposure from an electric arc that will create a second-degree burn in human tissue.
Athleisure. The movement where clothing designed for athletics is worn outside the gym to the office or to socialize.
Baby Pique Knit. A knitting method that creates a fine, small textured surface that appears similar to a very small waffle weave. See Pique Knit.
Back Yoke. A piece of fabric that connects the back of a garment to the shoulders. This allows the garment to lay flat and drape nicely.
Bartack. To reinforce a seam with a bar of stitches, providing a more durable seam end. Commonly used at stress points.
Base Layer. Worn next to the skin, a base layer wicks sweat and keeps the wearer drier and more comfortable.
Bias Cut. A technique used by designers for cutting clothing to utilize the greater stretch in the “bias” or diagonal direction of the fabric, thereby causing it to accentuate body lines and curves and drape softly.

Bonding. The technique of permanently joining together two fabrics or layers of fabrics together by a bonding agent into one unit.
Box Pleat. A single, uniform fold in the center back of a garment to allow for more room and comfort.
Breathability. The movement of air from one side of the fabric to the other to keep the wearer comfortable. The breathability rating is typically expressed in a gram measurement of how much vapor a square meter (G/M2) of fabric will allow passing in a 24-hour period (typically, 1,000G/M2 to 10,000000G/M2). Generally, the higher the number, the more breathable the garment.
Brushed. A finishing process for knit or woven fabrics in which brushes or other abrading devices are used to raise a nap on fabrics or create a novelty surface texture.
Button-Down Collar. Found on many men’s dress wovens, where the collar’s wings can be buttoned to the front of the shirt, minimizing the spread of the wings.
Button-Through Sleeve Placket. A small placket located near the end of the sleeve, by the cuff, which contains a single button closure.

Colorfast. A dyed fabric’s ability to resist fading due to washing, exposure to sunlight and other environmental conditions.
Combed Ring Spun Cotton. A process by which the short fibers of a yarn are removed and the remaining longer fibers are arranged in parallel order for a high-quality yarn with excellent strength, fineness and uniformity.
Cool Mesh™ Technology. Similar to a pique knit but with a more open texture for increased breathability. Features a soft hand for better comfort.
Cord Locks. A stopper or toggle on a drawcord that keeps the cord from retracting into the garment.
Corduroy. A cut filling pile cloth with narrow to wide ribs. Usually made of cotton, but can be found in polyester and other synthetic blends.
Cotton. Soft vegetable fiber obtained from the seedpod of the cotton plant.
Cotton Count. A measure of thread density. It is the amount of thread measured in “hanks” (840 yards) needed to create one pound. With this system, the higher the number, the finer the yarn. In the United States, a cotton count between one and 20 is referred to as course counts. A regular single knit t-shirt can be between 15-18 count and a fashion tee is usually in the 30-40 count range.
