Sketchbook! My primitive first attempt at bookbinding:

If I attempted to make straight pages I knew I would want to set it all on fire, so I went with the deckle edge. Took apart a $2 hardcover book from the library book sale, and covered it in leather scraps. Paper is Canson mixed media 98 lb.

I was really proud of those ridges on the spine, whatever they're called, but I have now since learned how to actually do all this properly and I'm ready for round 2. However, I still adore this ugly child and I'm gonna fill it up with sketches.

not a big fan of deckle/untrimmed fore-edges in general but i especially hate when perfect bound books have faux deckle edges. bitch who are you trying to fool. NOBODY thinks this was printed on paper from a mould and deckle AND it makes it harder to flip through! trim that shit off!!

an interesting note about the mondrian book, it has a "deckle edge", the term for very slightly uneven page sizes in the style of ones from the 18th century. (the book was published in 2024.)

the inconsistency of the penguin deluxe covers for Jane austen’s works irks me so much!!!

^ like THESE are the designs I love !!! but for some reason these are the only books that have these types of covers

meanwhile these ones… not only do I not like them, but i also don’t get why the bicentennial for s&s is a completely different style than persuasion and emma. or why only those have bicentennial editions when all of them have been around for 200+ years now. and there are 2 different penguin deluxe editions of s&s and persuasion, but none at all of northanger abbey or mansfield park???

Deckled edges/rough edges on a book are the best thing in the world. They're so tactile and sensory. I love the feel of them.
