Unbreaking the Demiurge
read it on the AO3 at https://ift.tt/D2mqXa4
by Angstaholic (NerdoftheTaiga)
Ever since his Fall, Lucifer Morningstar has despised his once-beloved twin who betrayed him and cast him into Hell. What he doesn't know is that Michael has a different version of the story, as well as feelings about Lucifer that are solidly in the realm of obsession. When Lucifer meets Chloe Decker and the Deckerstar chemistry starts to bubble, Michael reacts badly.
Mostly canon compliant until the start of s03e01 They're Back Aren't They, then diverges into something of a season 3/5 mashup, in that Michael and Cain are in the story at the same time.

Whumptober Day 8 Prompt “Stab Wound”
Read it on AO3
---------------------
It happened so fast and she was standing behind him, but Chloe knew the exact moment her world turned upside down. It was the moment she heard the sharp crack as the ax sunk into Lucifer’s sternum and he stumbled back with the impact. She knew then that she had been wrong. So terribly wrong.
As he fell backwards to the floor, all of the fear and terror Chloe had been battling over his true nature melted away, swiftly replaced with ice cold dread as he hit the ground. Hard.
She watched in horror as he laid there, staring at the wooden handle of the ax as though not comprehending what he was seeing. Then his hands reached for it, as if to remove the deeply embedded metal from his chest and she rushed to his side. Dropping to her knees, she trapping both of his hands in hers.
He tried to protest, but his breathing was becoming wet and ragged. He stared up at her with tears and terror gleaming in his eyes and her heart broke into a thousand pieces. How could she have been so blind? She was planning to kill him. Send him back to Hell. How could she do that to him? To her partner? She had been so stupid to run away, going to Rome of all places and wasting valuable time. Time that was about to be up.
Chloe watched the blood spreading across his shirt and the fog that filled her head and had her hovering over him in stunned silence suddenly lifted. "Lucifer. Oh my God. Oh my God, no, please."  Tears filled her eyes and she whipped around searching for someone –anyone– who could help her. Someone that could save him.
"Somebody call for an ambulance now!" She didn't recognize the voice screaming out the words. She was so used to sounding calm and collected, being the put together and logical detective. But the image of Lucifer running in front of her and the wet thump as the ax hit home was replaying at blinding speeds through her mind. She had never felt terror like this before, even when Trixie was taken.
The panic tearing through her chest strangled her. Tears streamed down her face now as she turned back at him. He was crying too, and she sobbed even harder. She had never seen him cry before.
"Why would you do something so stupid, Lucifer? You're vulnerable around me, and yet you do something like this knowing it can kill you! Why?!" She hated that she was yelling at him as he lay on the ground, dying from a stab wound intended for her, but she needed to understand something before he was gone.
His beautiful face was growing more ashen by the second. He took a small breath, then another, before licking his lips and smearing them with blood. She could see the pain in his eyes but he smiled the way he only did at her and his hand reached up to cup her cheek. The look in his eyes telling her what she didn't want him to say yet, but knew was going to all the same.
"Would do it again, to keep you safe. Be–Because I love you. Don't you know that Detective?" He blinked and took two more short rasping breaths before he stilled, and his hand began to slowly slip from her cheek.
"No. No. No no no noooo‐"
"CHLOE?!" Dan's voice rang out through the barn but she didn't look up. She didn't want to see the look on his face when he saw Lucifer dead on the ground and her sobbing over him. She laid her head down on Lucifer's shoulder.
"I'm sorry, Lucifer. I'm so, so sorry. Please come back. Please, I'll do anything, just come back."
"Chloe…Oh my God. Lucifer." Her ex husband stopped a few feet away but didn't make a move to step any closer.
"Please don't take him away from me. Please? I'm sorry I doubted him. But please, God, you can't let him stay there. Not after this. Not anymore. Please give him back." Chloe begged into the fabric of her dead partner's suit.
Her desperate prayers went unanswered.
"Chloe?! Dan! Did you find them?! Is he oka–" Ella skidded to a stop beside Dan, a strangled gasp ripping through her.
"Santa Maria... No. Please not him. Not him, too." The forensic scientist crashed to her knees, making the sign of the cross as she struggled for breath.
Dan knelt down beside her and wrapped an arm around her shoulders as she wept. He wasn’t crying. A stoic expression set on his face as he stared at Lucifer's body, with Chloe weeping freely onto the dead man’s shoulder.
The crime scene became flooded with officers, detectives, and field techs but none of them dared approach the trio on the ground right away.  They left them as long as they could, kept away by menacing glares from Dan. But eventually they needed to take Lucifer away and process the rest of the scene.
Chloe fought her ex husband as he pulled her away from Lucifer's body. Kicking and screaming at him until he deposited her in Ella's arms where the woman still knelt on the ground. She sobbed harder as the small woman rubbed her back in soothing circles.
"I'm so sorry, Chloe. I'm so so sorry. Please, Chloe we have to calm down. You don't want to hurt yourself. He wouldn't want that." Ella was rocking her back and forth like a child but Chloe didn't care how it looked. She didn't care if she hurt herself.  She deserved to hurt for everything she had put him through and had been planning on putting him through.
Her heart felt like it was both in a million pieces and gone at the same time. Like when Lucifer had taken his last breath, he had taken her heart with it.
She hadn't even told him she loved him too.

Lucifer Season 5 HELP
I really want to watch S5 of Lucifer, but I *hate* the mistaken identiy/fake identitiy/different person pretending to be another person trope. like haaaaaaattteee it. Will stop watching a show or episode if I see it. And based on the S5 promo, that seems to be a big part of it - can someone tell me how quickly it gets resolved or does it drag on the entire season?? I am okay with spoilers, I just need to know before I start trying to watch it.

Silence is the worst.
Not just complete, unchanging silence. Short, changing but inherently still silence is worst.
This is worse when she hears a few instead of a lot, when she hears discreet sounds instead of long, loud ones.
Sound chaos is the best she can get these days.
Hours?
'Doesn't matter when the silence is at its worst, really.
Time passes always faster, is always 'best', whenever sounds and chaos are at their loudest.
Whenever Lucifer's pain is at its loudest.
His last moan was low, the clicking of chains unnervingly discreet, as much as his ravaged pants against the floor. His raging breath… flickering bubbles on extended pool of blood.
Him, silent, in pain… is the worst she ever heard.

How is it that sometimes you don’t get hurt and then other times you do? What is the difference?

Dunno if you’re still taking requests, but if you are (and have time!) perhaps a reveal whump to lucifers friends (Ella, Dan maybe) while he’s saving Trixie? I’ve just gotten this image in my head of Luci protecting the lil human like he protected Chloe in s3 final
Technically requests are closed but considering I got less requests than usual this time I think I can make an exception ;) If you like reveal fics that include Dan in the mix check out this fic of mine. There’s no Trixie but there is some whump! For this fic I didn't include an exact redo of the s3 finale but I did include some wing!fic similar to it.
EDIT: This came out a lot longer than anticipated and will also be put up on AO3
When the call came in Dan assumed the worst. Twelve witnesses claimed to have seen Trixie walking to a friend’s house after school. Ten claimed to have seen her get pulled into the back seat of an unmarked car. All ten witnesses had tried to save her and all ten witnesses had failed.
Dan’s stomach twisted when the evidence was laid out. Minus the witnesses, it reminded him too much like another kidnapping. He hoped, no he prayed, that Trixie wasn’t going to meet the same fate as April Tinsley had thirty years ago. Neither he nor Chloe would be able to live with themselves if their baby girl was found mutilated and violated in a ditch on the side of the road.
And as if the nightmare couldn’t get any worse, the LAPD had hit a dead end. Correction: the majority of the LAPD had hit a dead end, Chloe, on the other hand, was denying that they’d hit a dead end.
Dan stole a glance at Chloe’s desk. It was covered with papers and frantic scribbles. Lucifer loomed just over her shoulder, and if Dan didn’t know better, he’d think that it was Lucifer’s kid that had been kidnapped. The man’s face was twisted into something that Dan had never seen before. His features were neutral, blank even, but his eyes burned with a fury that forced the precinct into a tense silence.
The wheeze of a printer made Dan jump. When he realized the noise belonged to Chloe’s desktop printer, he ran towards it. The message had printed by the time he got there.
WE HAVE YOUR DAUGHTER. MAKE US A DEAL.
Dan reread the message five times over. The second sentence didn’t make sense. Ransom notes usually included an exact amount of money, but this note read like a blank check. There was no amount, no location, and no indication that they shouldn’t contact law enforcement.
Chloe didn’t seem to care how wrong the whole thing felt. She was already jabbing at her keyboard, trying to ping where the message had been sent from. Dan looked at Lucifer for an answer, but Lucifer wasn’t staring at the paper. He was staring at his phone. A shadow of disdain crossed over his face, and his frown deepened. If Dan’s heart wasn’t beating as fast as it was, maybe he would have commented on the sudden chill that swept through the precinct.
“Excuse me, Detective, Daniel,” he muttered, hardly concealing his anger. Then he began to walk off towards the stairs.
Dan’s head whipped towards Ella’s office, where he knew she’d been spying on them for the past few minutes. He caught her eye and jerked his head in Lucifer’s direction. She nodded and grabbed her purse off the table. They headed towards the parking garage.
“We’re going to get some fresh air, Chlo’.”
Chloe didn’t respond.
“We can take my car,” Ella said when they got outside.
Dan grunted his understanding and five minutes later they were racing down the Strip in a vintage Thunderbird. Despite his head start, Lucifer wasn’t hard to find. His Corvette weaved through traffic oblivious to pedestrians and road signs, leaving a trail of car horns and near-miss accidents in its wake. Ella maneuvered around the damage expertly and without complaint.
Fifteen minutes later, Lucifer made a hard right and banked into a group of warehouses. By the time Dan and Ella caught up, they found the Corvette haphazardly parked with the key still in the ignition.
“If I had to guess, I’d say Lucifer’s in there.” Ella gestured to an access door nearly ripped off its hinges.
Dan unholstered his pistol. “And if I had to guess, I’d say the kidnappers are in there too.”
They crept into the warehouse, Dan in front and Ella just behind him, gripping the bottom of his jacket. The few lights that hadn’t been busted out were flickering, almost as if there was a short in the wiring. Shafts of dusty sunlight filtered in through the shattered window panes and cut through the places where the flood lights didn’t shine. Shipping crates and wooden pallets lined the perimeter of the room, and as soon as they could, Dan and Ella ducked behind them for cover.
They’d walked a few hundred feet when suddenly, Ella shoved him down to the dirt floor. “Get down.”
He went down soundlessly. Next to him, Ella was typing something out on her phone. When she was done, she turned it towards him.
I’m texting for backup it read.
Dan moved to grab the phone and typed out a message of his own: make sure they know to stay quiet. We don’t want to spook them.
Ella nodded and took the phone back to start typing out her message. When she was done, Dan army crawled towards the voices. The voices got louder and more distinct until finally he could make out what they were saying.
“Look we ain’t the bad guys here. You want your daughter and we want what belongs to us, alright?” a voice said from the other side of the shipping containers.
“One, Beatrice isn’t my daughter. Two, I don’t know what you want, you haven’t told me.”
Dan barely managed to stay quiet. That was Lucifer’s voice.
“I thought Lucifer Morningstar didn’t lie.”
“I don’t. Tell me what you want, and I’ll arrange its arrival if and only if you let Beatrice go this instant.”
Dan flinched when he heard the sound of a fist hitting flesh. He crawled a few more feet and managed to find a gap in between containers that he could see what was going on.
Lucifer sat handcuffed to a metal chair, surrounded by five hulking goons. Each man had a rifle strapped to their backs and handguns on their waistbands. A sixth guy stood parallel to them, holding a gun to Trixie’s head. Dan gulped and tried to keep his breathing under control.
The man holding Trixie spoke, and Dan realized it was him that had been making demands earlier. “We know what you are, Satan.”
“Then you should know exactly the kind of torment you can expect to receive when your miserable excuses for souls cross the threshold.”
One of the five henchmen punched Lucifer in the gut. It was a shock when he barely even flinched. Then, the henchmen drew out a curved dagger that Dan could have sworn he’d seen before.
“This,” the leader explained, “can kill you, Devil. We have sources that tell us it was forged in Hell.”
Dan didn’t need to see his face to know that Lucifer was at least a little surprised. “And, pray tell, how did you come across this weapon?”
The leader jabbed the barrel of the gun into Trixie’s temple, causing her to whimper. “Your daughter’s backpack.”
“I’m sorry Lucifer, Maze gave me one for emergencies,” she said in a wobbly voice.
The man slapped Trixie. “Quiet!”
Dan’s blood boiled, and if the tension in Lucifer’s shoulders were anything to go by, so had his.
A low, predatory growl rose up from Lucifer’s throat and Dan could have sworn the ground trembled from its intensity. “I’m afraid that was the wrong decision.”
The leader smiled crookedly and shot the henchmen holding Maze’s dagger a look. In one swift movement, the man rammed the blade into Lucifer’s thigh. The only sound Lucifer made was a soft hiss, as if all of the air was being sucked from his lungs. The henchmen slammed his open palm down next to the blade and only then did Lucifer scream in pain. The henchmen removed his hand from Lucifer’s thigh and turned it up so it caught the light. It was stained dark crimson.
The leader laughed in disbelief. “It looks like the big bad Devil isn’t so macho after all.” He shook Trixie’s shoulders. “I wonder if he’ll cry if we shoot his girl.”
In that moment, Dan didn’t even think. He fingers flicked off the safety and fired off a round. The next thing he knew, the leader was falling backwards, and Trixie was falling with him. The five henchmen drew their handguns. Dan barely registered Lucifer snapping the handcuff chain, but he was up and stumbling out of the chair with a cry of pain before he could blink. He watched in horror as Lucifer ripped the blade out of his thigh and began racing towards the group.
Dan glanced back at Ella, and their eyes met in the darkness. An unspoken agreement sparked between them. Dan cocked his gun just as Ella let out a bloodcurdling scream. Lucifer and the henchmen whipped towards the scream and Dan took another shot. A henchman crumpled to the ground.
What happened next was something Dan couldn’t explain. For a brief second, everything came to a standstill and then it erupted into chaos. He lay in the dirt, dumbfounded. Two white wings, flared from Lucifer’s back. Dan watched as he lunged for the remaining henchmen, dagger in his right hand and his left balled into a fist. He looked every bit the avenging angel from the scripture and Dan couldn’t have been more terrified.
He swallowed his fear and flicked his safety back on before sliding the gun to Ella. Then he made a break for Trixie. Gunshots when off around him, but Dan didn’t stop. He saw Trixie rooted to the spot, shirt stained with her kidnapper’s blood, and ran faster. More screams rose up into the air, but none of them belonged to Ella.
Dan didn’t stop running when he reached Trixie. He just leaned down, and scooped her up by the armpits and flung her over his shoulder and kept going. He didn’t stop moving until they were safely behind a shipping container on the opposite side of the building.
He set her down to look at her face. “Are you hurt, monkey?”
Trixie shook her head.
“Does your face hurt?” He touched the red hand print left over from where the leader had slapped her. She flinched away from his touch.
Opened his arms, inviting her to hug him. “Come here.”
Trixie went and they stayed wrapped up in each other until the screams and gunshots were no more.
“You can come out now, Daniel, Ms. Lopez, they won’t be harming anyone now,” Lucifer’s voice cut through the silence.
Slowly, with Trixie still in his arms, Dan peered out from around the container. The scene that greeted them almost made him sick. Lucifer was coated in blood from head to wingtip. The dagger in his hand hung limply at his side and what looked to be bullet holes riddled his clothes. Loose, mangled feathers littered the floor and coated the stiff bodies of all six kidnappers. Across the room, Ella was making her way to the center of the room, eyes wide.
Dan met Lucifer’s eyes, and was surprised to find that they were blazing red.
Slowly, he got to his feet and crept towards Lucifer, the actual Devil. The closer he got to the bloodied man, the more obvious it became that Lucifer wasn’t in good shape. His breathing was labored and his wings were trembling feverishly.
“It’s alright, I won’t hurt you either.” Lucifer closed his eyes and sucked in a ragged breath. There was a sickening squelch and the crimson-stained white wings receded back into Lucifer’s body. The effort forced him to brace himself against his knees. After another breath, he righted himself and opened his eyes. They were brown.
“You’re not a method actor,” Ella said softly.
Lucifer gave a heartless chuckle and shook his head.
“But you saved Trixie,” Dan said, holding his daughter tighter.
“Beatrice is innocent. Even though she’s clearly not my spawn, a child should not pay for their father’s sins.”
For some reason, hearing Lucifer call Trixie spawn was relieving. He shifted Trixie to his hip so he could reach out and grip Lucifer’s shoulder. The man swayed under his grasp and when he matched Dan’s stare, his eyes were glassy. “Thank you,” he said fiercely. “You don’t know how much it means to me that you did that for her.”
Ella gave Lucifer a light pat on the arm. “Yeah buddy, that was pretty heroic of you to come in here alone. Super dumb, but I’ll give you credit for it anyways.”
Lucifer tried to flash one of his signature smiles, but all he could manage was a weak grin. “You’re not frightened?”
Dan squeezed his shoulder and gave it a small shake. “Dude you saved Trixie’s life, why would we be scared?”
Lucifer opened his mouth to respond, but just then half of the LAPD burst into the warehouse. Leading the pack was Chloe, gun drawn and eyes wild. When they fell on Dan with Trixie and then on Lucifer and then Ella, she let out a small cry of relief. She rushed towards them, holstering her gun as she went.
“Are you alright, baby?” She cradled Trixie’s face with a trembling hand.
Trixie could barely lift her head off Dan’s shoulder. “Yeah,” she whispered tiredly.
Chloe looked to Dan for confirmation.
“She’s a little bruised and a little scared, but that’s it,” he told her. Chloe’s eyes swept over them once more before she turned to Lucifer, who was beginning to look paler and paler. Seemingly not caring about the blood, she wrapped him in a hug. His arms weakly went around her waist.
“Don’t do that ever again, you dumbass.” Chloe pulled away to look into his eyes. “Why didn’t you wait for backup? We would have helped. I just turned around and all three of you were gone and then I get this text from Ella demanding backup with an address. I thought you might have been dead or worse, Lucifer.” Lucifer just shrugged and Chloe pulled him to her again. “I’m so glad you’re safe.” She finally let go of him and turned towards Dan and Ella. “I’m so glad all of you are safe.”
Behind her, Lucifer was swaying. Dan was about to say something, but before he could, he watched as the Devil’s eyes rolled in the back of his head and he collapsed into a heap on the floor. Chloe and Ella sunk down to try and revive him.
“We need a medic over here!” Ella called to the group of officers looking at the six unconscious bodies of the kidnappers.
Dan watched as a paramedic rushed over and helped Chloe and Ella secure Lucifer onto a stretcher. He watched as Satan himself was whisked away towards the ambulance undoubtedly parked outside and thought to himself about how odd it was that he felt more at ease in LA than ever before.

an art like any other (1/2)
Dying - It is an art; like everything else I do it exceptionally well. (Lady Lazarus, Sylvia Plath)
Pairing: Lucifer Morningstar/Chloe Decker Rating: M Words: 1710 Warnings: (Temporary) Character Death, Depictions of Torture Ao3
This is a double prompt fill. First for the lovely @mischief-with-sandra, who asked, “What if Chloe died and Lucifer only knew because he became invulnerable again?”
The other comes from @luciferprompts, and suggested the evocative image of Lucifer pinned to a wall by his wings. I decided to combine them into the ultimate angst with a happy ending story.
Huge amounts of whump ahead. I do promise to make it better by the end.
Chloe’s sharp eyes scanned the interior of the warehouse.
“See anything?” she hissed to Lucifer. He shook his head.
“Shit,” Chloe swore. They’d spent weeks tracking down the Sinnerman’s crime syndicate. Letting them slip away was not an option.
“Okay, let’s split up,” she said. They were on the criminals’ turf now. “Cover more ground.”
Lucifer nodded. “Be careful, Detective,” he said, touching her arm briefly. Then he was gone.
Chloe adjusted her grip on her weapon, moving deeper into the dark.
*
Lucifer advanced on the human, wishing he still had his Devil face to scare them into submission, but he found stalking to be just as enjoyable, if less effective.
He heard a shot from behind; with the echo in the building it came just a second too late to dodge.
Pain blossomed into being on his left shoulder and he whirled, at the throat of the man responsible in two strides. It was always refreshing when the Detective wasn’t around to see and he could unleash his full abilities.
Immediate threat eliminated, he turned back to the first man but he’d taken the opportunity to flee. Lucifer gave chase, knowing it was only a matter of time before his wound began to affect his faculties.
He cornered the man. A cornered human with a gun was a threat to him now. He’d already been shot once, but the initial pain had faded, rather than growing as he expected. What had Chloe called it? Adrenaline? Yes, that must be it.
As he approached, the sound of the backup team breaking in could be heard. The man spun, saw Lucifer, and emptied the rest of his clip into his chest as Lucifer sped to close the distance between them.
He knocked him out - the Detective needed suspects to question, after all - before looking down at himself. There was no way the human stain could have missed, at point-blank range, and it appeared another trip to Hell would be imminent.
Before he could begin to process the implications of that, he noticed the distinct lack of blood adorning his front. The holes in his Burberry were neat and clean - the bullets hadn’t touched him.
He frowned in confusion. The warehouse wasn’t large enough for the Detective to be out of range… perhaps the chase had taken her outside?
The backup squad was fanning out and he heard a radio squawk.
“This is backup unit 613, we’ve got an officer down, repeat, officer down…”
For a long moment, the words didn’t register. Chloe was fine, outside the warehouse. One of the other officers might not have been as lucky…
But he looked down at himself again, and in a terrible flash of clarity, he just knew.
“Chloe.” Her name was pulled from him in a breathless sob.
The radio continued with its meaningless sounds, calling for EMTs, for an ambulance, but Lucifer knew. He knew.
It was already too late.
“CHLOE!” There was a roaring in his ears as he raced through the piles of crates to the biggest convergence of people. He tossed them aside heedlessly, already knowing what he was going to find in the center even as he clung to the hope that he was mistaken.
He saw a flash of blonde hair and felt reality begin to shatter around him.
“No, no, no,” he moaned, in an endless loop as he crumpled next to Chloe’s still form. He gathered it to him, her limbs limp and awkward, proving her soul had already crossed the threshold. The humans could dither about medical attention all they liked; he knew the truth.
He was invulnerable again. Chloe was gone. She’d died alone in the dark, and he hadn’t been there for her.
The world began to warp around him as his control over his powers deteriorated. If he’d still had his face, it would have been out in full force, a visible expression of his rage and grief. Since he was robbed of that, his wings unfurled instead, blowing the gaggle of humans away with the force of it and he knew he had to get out of there.
Leaving Chloe (no, not-Chloe, her body, an empty shell, everything but Chloe Decker) behind, unable to remain near it a moment longer, he took to the skies, on top of a nearby building in an instant.
He did not turn his face to the uncaring sky or make a spectacle of himself by shouting at Someone who stopped listening long ago, but his words were no less fervent for all that.
“So that’s it then?” His fists clenched impotently at his sides, wings rearing up over his shoulders. “This is Your grand plan?” The pointlessness of it all choked him. Everything they’d shared, everything they’d been through, and she’d still died without knowing the truth about him… without knowing how much she’d meant to him.
Now she never would, gone the one place he could never follow.
She was already going to leave him far too soon, but this, this senseless death…
The sobs he refused to give voice to caught in his throat. He couldn’t think of anyone who deserved such a death less than Chloe Decker.
“You bastard,” he directed toward the Almighty, following it up with the same sentiment in every language ever spoken, and then was quiet. There was nothing more to be said.
Eternity stretched before him, cruel and implacable. Briefly, he considered remaining on this plane. Not in LA. Perth, maybe, or Amsterdam. South America somewhere. But he just as quickly discarded the notion. The pleasures of the flesh could no longer soothe him, only a constant reminder of how much more he once had. Damn his Father.
His wings trembled under the force of his grief. Bloody useless things. If he’d been even a little closer, he could have used one of his feathers to heal her, even from the brink of death. It was the only usage of them he would have accepted. But he’d been denied even that.
He gasped great gulps of air, bitterly resenting the fact that he was able to while Chloe wasn’t. He firmed his resolve. He would return to Lux one final time, inform Mazikeen that they would be returning Below - assuming she still wished to return.
But first: he would ensure they had company when they went.
He took flight, noticing only then that his face was wet with tears.
*
The Sinnerman was a small, unassuming man. Plain in every way, almost mousey, Lucifer would have passed him on the street without a second thought - or indeed a first.
“So, we meet at last,” he said. His voice was whisper-thin, almost a monotone.
Lucifer said nothing, his heart rattling in the hollow cavern of his chest. Standing before him was the architect of his destruction, and he felt nothing other than a profound weariness. He advanced on the Sinnerman, secure in his renewed invulnerability.
The Sinnerman held up a hand. “You don’t want to kill me, Mastema.”
Lucifer laughed; a dry, humourless sound that hurt in interesting ways. He hadn’t heard that particular name in a long time.
“Oh, I really do,” he ground out, his voice harsh and strange in his ears. “You and your boys are going to be keeping me company until the end of time.” An endless, empty existence, given any semblance of meaning only by inflicting his revenge on those responsible over and over and over. Allowing himself to become the monster everyone else believed he was because why not? Why bother?
“No,” the Sinnerman said simply, and Lucifer froze in place, completely and inexplicably unable to move. He could only watch as the man approached, closing the distance between them as slowly as Lucifer had done. “That’s not what you really want, is it, Mastema?”
Lucifer’s tongue darted out to wet suddenly dry lips.
“No,” he answered, the truth pulled from him unwillingly, as he drew out the desires of others.
“No,” the Sinnerman repeated confidently, bending closer. “You want to be punished, don’t you?”
“Yes,” Lucifer admitted, eyes wide. The Sinnerman smiled.
“Of course you do. For letting your Detective die. For all you’ve done for her sake. You killed your own brother to save her life and she ended up dying anyway. With you in the same building. You didn’t even notice.”
"How are you doing this?” Lucifer gasped, cords straining in his neck as he fought to break free. The Sinnerman tilted his head, regarding him quizzically.
“Does it matter?” he asked. Lucifer supposed it didn’t.
Then the pain began, and he gave himself over to it with what felt like relief.
Pain.
He is surrounded by it. Saturated by it. Adrift in it.
He floats in a boundless dark sea of burning agony, ripples rebounding on ripples building to a cascade of pain, never finding an end.
He’s still alive, because he is burning, the Fall and the lake of fire and cutting his wings off all merging and blurring together.
He wonders why he’s still alive.
He’s certain he’s in Hell.
Occasionally he remembers. Chloe. Her name sends searing jolts of torture through him, and he is grateful for the pain. It becomes his refuge.
He fades in and out of consciousness, words skittering against the confines of his skull.
“You’re finally… the jewel of my collection… the crowning… captured in the zenith of your despair…”
The words should evoke something in him other than apathy. But they are so very far away.
He drifts, buoyed by the pain, his constant companion. Time no longer has any meaning - there is only the eternal present. This is his reality now, and he knows it to be right.
Suddenly, her face looms up before him and he gasps, the sight twisting a white hot knife in his chest. There is no refuge from this pain.
"No. No, please,” he begs. “Take it away.” He can’t tell if his lips form words, but the face’s expression creases in concern. She’d always worried about him. Prayed for the Devil.
"I’m sorry.” He won’t squander this chance to say it, even like this. “I’m so sorry.”
The face is removed, and he sinks gratefully into the pain, letting it consume him.

Fanfic question
If you were reading a fic, and it was a few chapters in, and then the author abruptly stopped updating for months...would you still keep reading if the author started adding to it again? Or would you have lost interest entirely?
...yes, I'm the author in this lol. It may not be within a week (just moved, no internet, no computer set up - I'm on mobile), but I have my motivation back and my kid is starting school, so I'll have more time for writing...
Puppets and Bilge Rats, Mercy and Mayflies, and an idea or two for the Deckerstar and Whouffaldi ships are what I have in the works. But for now they're handwritten in notebooks.

Laura’s Deckerstar Fic Recs (Part 18)
You can find the complete list (minus rec notes) at my Ao3 Bookmark page.
Disclaimer: These recs have no real ranking and are simply being shared in the order in which I bookmarked them. And just because I say more about some than I do others, does not mean that those fics are “better” or that I like them more.
Red-Handed by Storycat9
Rating: Not Rated Status: Complete Word Count: 3,495 (1 chapter) Author’s Summary: The Devil is not in the habit of forgiveness. Returning to the LAPD is not the same as forgiving the Detective. While he wouldn’t admit it to himself or Dr. Linda, Lucifer knows that working with the Detective also allows him to see to her punishment.
Rec Notes: This is one of my favourite examples of season 4 angst. It has a very in-character Lucifer trying to “punish” Chloe by flaunting his relationship with Eve and it fits into canon perfectly. And despite all the angst, the author still manages to effortlessly slip in a family fun day with Lucifer, Chloe and Trixie which highlights the fact that Lucifer very much still loves Chloe and is punishing himself just as much as he is her.
P.S. Although this fic is part of a series, it can easily be read as a stand alone as there aren’t any direct references to its prequel at all.
To All The Griefs I Left Behind by Pokimoko
Rating: Teen Status: Complete Word Count: 44,300 (10 chapters) Author’s Summary: It's been weeks since Lucifer returned from Hell, and Chloe couldn't be happier. They are together and—after so many years of ups and downs—everything is finally perfect. Even if the world seems a bit weirder than usual. Even if the ghosts of Lucifer's past are coming back to haunt him. Even if Chloe feels like she's losing her mind. But it's fine. It's all fine.
Rec Notes: Another angsty one. And I mean really angsty. This is a good one if you are in the mood to cry. It is also highly underrated so I implore you to give it a go and show the author some love.
The Royal Treatment by elleflies
Rating: Mature Status: WIP (last update: 3 March 2021) Word Count: 40,812 (6/9 chapters) Author’s Summary: Chloe and Lucifer aren’t married, but try telling that to the supernatural community of Los Angeles and the infernal plane full of demons ecstatic to see their boss finally tied down, literally or otherwise.
Rec Notes: This is a fake married fic unlike any other. For a start, it’s set when Lucifer is back in Hell after the season 4 finale, so he and Chloe don’t even interact (or at least, they haven’t yet). The fake marriage is the result of a prank by Maze in which she fakes documents, making it seem that Chloe and Lucifer are legally married. Word gets around and before Chloe has a chance to sort things out, the supernatural community starts calling her the Queen of Hell and she sorta has to roll with it. And down in Hell, the demons also learn of the “marriage” and are very eager to throw Lucifer bachelor parties and create gifts for their new Queen, so he too goes along with the rumour. Both Chloe and Lucifer are unaware of what the other is dealing with, and it creates some great parallels.
As hinted at in the summary, this fic has heaps of different mythical creatures (including vampires, pixies and Fae) but they don’t eclipse the story - it’s still very much Deckerstar centric - so don’t worry if you aren’t too into that sort of thing.
Time’s Up by HiroMyStory
Rating: Teen Status: Complete Word Count: 2,025 (1 chapter) Author’s Summary: Lucifer is dying. Chloe will do anything to save him.
Rec Notes: This one isn’t actually in the "Chloe Decker/Lucifer Morningstar” tag... but it’s close enough so I’m still including it in my rec list. It is an alternate take on the season 4 episode “Expire Erect” and it has all the angst and whump you would expect. But its most unique feature is its open-ended ending. It’s so good that I simultaneously want to read a sequel and leave the fic exactly how it is. (Though I actually have started writing a sequel to it which, if I finish it, I might ask the author for permission to post.)
Believer by JCBeckett
Rating: Not Rated Status: WIP (last update: 2 March 2021) Word Count: 129,783 (17/? chapters) Author’s Summary: There are three things Chloe Decker knows: One, she is in love with the Devil. Two, the Devil loves her back (even if he hasn’t said it yet). And three, “celestial craziness” doesn’t even begin to cover what she’s gotten herself into.
Picks up right after the cliffhanger in 5A. Fluff, angst, and shameless amounts of Deckerstar within.
Rec Notes: This is a post-season 5a fic and it incorporates the few behind the scenes details we have been given about season 5b and then carries on to its own action-packed story. It’s super-angsty but balances it out by giving us small break with fluff and humour. I also love the focus on Chloe and Lucifer’s relationship and how they are still dealing with insecurities but ultimately know that they are better together.
P.S. This fic does have ties with the comics but you don’t have to have read them to understand the story (I haven’t read them, and it hasn't affected my enjoyment of the fic in the slightest).

Come Out, Come Out, Wherever You Are!
Lucitober/Whumptober
Whumptober Day 5 Prompt: "Gunpoint"
Read it on AO3
-----------------------
Trixie was running and she was afraid.
Her heart pounded in her chest. Her feet hit the hard, smooth ground beneath her. Her heavy breathing echoed off the far away walls. She halted and whirled around to make sense of her surroundings, confused by the tall metal shelving reaching towards the ceiling above her.
Officer Malcolm had picked her up from school and brought her here, to the room with the helicopter and the plane and the tall shelves filled with parts. Then Mommy showed up and told her to go and hide, and she had, even though she really didn't want to. The sound of her mother’s voice when she begged Trixie to hide had caused fear to spike through her tenfold. Her eyes roved the space in front of her. She was scared, really truly scared, in a way she never had been before. Malcolm had his own gun and both of mommy’s. Trixie was smart enough to know a bad situation when she was in one.
She rounded the large white item to the right of the room, putting it between herself and danger. She watched her mother open the trunk of the car, then watched with horror as Malcolm smiled and pointed the gun at her mother. Every ounce of her strength was poured into staying put and not running back to her. Trixie dug her fingernails into her palms. There was nothing she could do to keep her mother or herself safe. Cold dread spread through her tiny frame like ice cold tendrils. They were going to die here.
The paper airplane that soared between Malcolm and her mom didn't seem real. But it gave her mom enough of a distraction to run away and hide herself. Lucifer’s voice rang out through the room. Trixie sighed and her shoulders relaxed. Lucifer was here. He was mommy's partner. He would help them. She watched as he taunted the bad man, walking to stand right in front of him despite the gun. Trixie couldn’t make out the words, but Lucifer didn’t seem worried about the danger, just amused.
A flash and a loud bang reverberated through the room.
She’d seen enough TV to know what happened, and Lucifer fell to the floor clutching his stomach. Malcolm crouched down next to him and held his hand out. Lucifer reached out slowly for whatever he was holding before the other man pulled his arm away. With the dread inside her growing, she watched Lucifer gasp for breath as Malcolm stood again and walked away from him while calling for her mother.
Trixie knew she should run again, find a better place to hide, but the fear of being caught and shot too caused her feet to stay rooted to the spot. All she could focus on was Lucifer laying on the ground, a pool of blood spreading out wide underneath him. She thought she heard him call out for his dad, but she wasn’t sure between the sound of the shot ringing out and the pounding of her pulse in her ears. She watched as his jerking movements slowed and he went still. His eyes stayed open, staring at the ceiling.
With her hand over her mouth to stifle her sobs, her eyes overflowed. Huge, hot tears streamed down her face. But she couldn't look away, couldn't think about mommy, couldn't worry for herself. She couldn't look away from Lucifer. No, from his body.
Abruptly, Lucifer sat up with a gasp, and Trixie stared in shock as he took a few deep breaths. He was alive.
His head whipped around the hanger, searching for something. Trixie heard Malcolm, having grown tired of searching for her mom and unaware of Lucifer’s revival, begin calling out her name. She watched as Lucifer’s features set in anger and, almost like magic, two large white wings erupted into being behind him and his eyes blazed red.
Trixie’s eyes widened as she stared at his beautiful wings. She knew he could do something cool with his eyes, but she hadn’t realized he had wings. They were amazing. Long, wide, and almost blindingly bright. Somewhere in the back of her head she wondered if her mom could see from where she was hiding from Malcolm. Lucifer began scanning the room with his eyes. They almost skipped right over her before he focused on her intently and they switched back to brown. She was still crying, but the tears were not flowing as hard as before. The frown he was wearing deepened.
From one blink to the next, he was gone, appearing right next to her hiding spot with a quiet flutter and the soft rush of air being displaced. He placed a finger to his lips with a cheeky grin, patting her head and wiping away a stray tear on her cheek. She was about to launch herself at him and trap him in a hug, to make sure he was really next to her and not actually laying still on the ground, when she saw movement in the corner of her eye. She tensed for a moment, thinking it was Malcolm following the light coming from Lucifer’s wings to find them.
Instead she saw her mother sneaking toward her guns, trying to stay hidden from the man stalking her. Trixie looked back to Lucifer, fear flashing through her again. Lucifer was okay, but they were still in danger. He nodded at her, pointing wordlessly at the ground and then held up his hand mouthing, Stay here, urchin. She nodded back and he was gone.
She peeked out just in time to see him land next to Malcolm, then punch the man hard in the face.
Right as Malcolm spun to face Lucifer again, her mother popped up from the floor and four shots rang out, the bullets barely missing the edge of Lucifer's wing as they sailed into the other man’s chest. Lucifer didn’t even flinch.
Malcolm slumped to the ground, dropping his gun. Lucifer walked to stand over him. He smiled, twirling a big coin between his fingers before he flicked it up in the air over Malcolm.
Malcolm stretched out for it desperately, but it disappeared in a flurry of sparks before he could reach it. His hands searched the ground around him and Lucifer crouched down beside him. He leaned in and said something to him, but Trixie was too far away and couldn’t hear. After a moment Malcolm slumped to the ground again as Lucifer smirked. Trixie sighed in relief. The danger was gone. The bad man was dead and she and her mom were safe. But for how long?
Her mother was standing behind Lucifer, her gun still in her hands and her mouth hanging wide open. She hadn't moved when Malcolm finally stilled. She just stood there staring wide eyed at Lucifer's wings.
At Lucifer. Who was alive.
Trixie sped out from her hiding spot and launched herself at Lucifer's still crouching form with tears flowing anew from her eyes.
"I didn't… you were… you DIED!" She wailed freely into his suit as he wrapped his arms around her in a tight embrace. He was shaking slightly, but he shushed her, rubbing her back and stroking her hair.
"I'm quite all right, Urchin. No need to fret! I'm good as new. See?" He eased her head off of his chest and fluttered his wings with a wide smile that didn't reach his eyes. Tears continued streaming down her face, but she nodded at him before finally sparing a glance at her mother. She was still staring, her eyes wider with fear as they flicked between her daughter and her partner.
"Mommy…" Trixie started slowly and Lucifer tensed slightly, as if just then remembering her mom was there and his wings were out. His arms loosened as he prepared to move away from her, but Trixie just gripped him tighter. "It's okay. We're okay."
Her mother took one step forward, then another and another, until she was standing just a few feet away. She didn't come any closer.
"He's always told us the truth, Mommy. Lucifer would never hurt us. You don't have to be afraid." She reached a small hand out to reassure her, but didn't make a move to get away from the angel clutching her to him.
"Trixie… He's the Devil." She didn't look at her partner now, only stared at her daughter with confusion painting her tear stained face.
"Not to me, Mommy. He saved us. He stood up for me to Janice… He's my friend." She looked at Lucifer and smiled while placing her other hand, the one not held out to her mom, on his cheek.
It seemed that was all it took to convince her mother. She holstered her gun and closed the last few steps to the pair crouched on the ground. Dropping to her knees, she took her daughter's hand and the little girl pulled her into their embrace as her mother began to sob.
"Thank you, Lucifer. For saving us from the bad guy." Her hand slipped from his face to his collar, clutching it tightly with her small fingers, and her eyes grew heavy. "And for coming back."
"I would storm the gates of Heaven or tear apart Hell to protect the two of you, urchin. Never doubt that." He hugged them tighter, and Trixie knew he wasn't lying.
-----------------------
When Trixie's eyes opened, she was in her room, safely tucked into bed. Her pillow and face were soaked with tears. Her Malcolm nightmares. Though less frequent recently, they had taken many forms over the years. This wasn't the first time the dream had changed to include Lucifer with his wings and red eyes. She had never seen his wings, but Maze told her about them once, and ever since then they made frequent cameos in her dreams.
She dreamt about him many times after he left a few months ago. Sometimes he saved her or her mom, sometimes they were just spending time together again like they used to. Each one left her with an ache in her chest. She missed him, missed seeing her mother smile and laugh with life in her eyes.
Mom said he had to go back home. That he didn't have cell service or internet there, so she couldn't talk to him when she wanted to or just needed someone to talk to. But Trixie knew what Lucifer was. Knew who he was. She knew what Mom meant when she said home; that he had gone back to Hell and she would likely never see her friend again.
She began to cry again, in earnest, huge sobs racking her slender frame. She tried stifling the noise, hoping not to wake her mom. It didn't do any good, she had already heard her, because a moment later her door opened and her mother slipped into bed next to her.
She shushed her daughter quietly and stroked her hair. "It's okay, monkey. I'm here. Did you have a nightmare?"
"Sort of… Not really. It was Malcolm again bu- but…" Another sob racked through her and her mom wrapped her in her arms. "Lucifer saved us again, but it was different this time. He had glowing red eyes, and big white wings."
She felt her mother tense up. Trixie knew it was because she didn't want to admit that Lucifer was actually an angel and not just a magician.
"I miss him, Mommy. I miss him so much." She cried some more and clutched at her mother's back. Trixie could feel the shaky rise and fall of her mom's chest under her cheek and instantly regretted making her mom sad. She seemed to be doing that a lot lately.
"I know you do, monkey. I… I miss him, too."
They stayed that way, wrapped in each others arms, until they both fell asleep again.

Hey! I haven’t read lucifer fics in forever, but since you and tarysande recently updated, i started looking for more but am having a hard time finding good ones that i haven’t read before. Do you have any recs? Preferably none post season 4
aw, well, glad to welcome you back, anon! Let me see what I can dig up for you.
Castaway. by ariaadagio // @ariaadagio // M 26/26
Summary:
The Devil is real. A sentence Chloe Decker never believed until Lucifer Morningstar burned out her skepticism with his hellfire eyes. It's a "Hell" of a reality shift, but Chloe realizes she may not have time for gradual acceptance when she discovers that one of the bodies in her most recent murder investigation isn't human. Worse still, the next target might be Lucifer. A story that begs the question: who prays for Satan? [Post-S3 finale continuation. Deckerstar.]
(If you haven’t read any of aria’s works yet, I high-key recommend anything and everything.)
a study in humanity (series) by mutememelody // @mutemelody // T 3/3 works
Lucifer needed to break the pattern, so he does the one thing no one would expect. This, of course, sets off its own series of events. Canon divergent after Season 2 Episode 5: "The Weaponizer".
(a fav series of mine and I wish to death for like twelve more stories in the series)
Caging the Devil by Hircine_Taoist // M 54/54
Summary:
Instead of flying away with Chloe, the bullets, and thus the cards, fall differently for Lucifer and the Detective. Trapped and fearing for the Detective's life, the Devil threatens to do all he can to send Hell to Cain. Pierce realizes his best chance of living out the rest of his days is to keep Lucifer imprisoned and vulnerable. While their friends desperately search for them, Cain seeks to keep the two locked away. Forever.
Keeping a clever detective and the Devil caged, however, is no easy feat. Meanwhile, Chloe and Lucifer are more vulnerable than ever, and forced to face some uncomfortable truths about their relationship while still trying to assure they both survive.
(intense, Cain-is-actually-terrifying whump filled story.)
One for Fantasies by LuckyDragon // @luckydragon10 // T 1/1
Summary:
Chloe Decker had never been one for make-believe.
(a sweet and soft and tender little one-shot. I love the imagery.)
Patrick the Bartender Is Not Paid Enough For This Shit by Liannabob // E 1/1
Summary:
Alternate title - "Throwing things off a balcony doesn't make them vanish."
The story runs parallel to season 1 (sort of between-the-scenes) following Patrick the bartender and exploring what it might be like to work at Lux.
(a HILARIOUS outsider pov fic. Liannabob is superb at them, check out Ella Enlighted and Observing Lucifer, too!)
De Noite Ardo by RushAndTomatoJuice // M 1/1
Summary:
“Lucifer.” Her voice sounded as choked as his had only minutes ago. He was compelled to raise his eyes to meet hers, and he did so warily.
One look at her and he knew they were doomed. He knew he’d always been weak, especially when it came to his desires. But he was enthralled with the way her eyes turned the darkest of blues in the moonlight, and this yearning he felt inside him overflowed and reached out to her. Now, he could only hope she’d forgive him in the morning.
(Friends with Benefits AU. Absolutely Wonderful)
faith is half the battle (series) by alecto // @alectoperdita // T-M 3/? works
Summary:
Ironically, accepting Lucifer is the easiest part of the long and messy fallout following Pierce's death.
(one of my fav post s3 fics)
Time Heals All Wounds by NotOneLine // @notonelineff // T 3/3
Summary:
Following the events of the season 3 finale, Chloe Decker is left stunned and devastated.
But there's no time to mourn the life she once knew.
Not when her partner needs her.
(this fic has a some imagery that just Sticks with Me, you know? that good hurt/comfort)
like once in a life by redledgers // @buckysleftarm T 1/1
Summary:
When the kaiju invade Los Angeles, Chloe Decker joins the resistance.
(Pacific Rim AU, Hell yeah)
Devils, Detectives, and Questionable Decisions (series) by whopooh // @whopooh // G-M 4/? works
Summary: Phryne Fisher meets the devil - or, Lucifer meets the Honourable Miss Fisher.
(Lovely crossover with Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. The characterization is on point and so, so lovely)
.
AND i KNOW you said no post S4 Fics, but you have to try this one, I am so Desperately in Love with It and it doesn’t focus on it. (or, if you must, you can skip the last three chapters, but it would make me sad)
The Fool You Need by Brokenjaw (Vrael) // @brokenjaw // G 6/6
Summary:
Lucifer hides his daemon. She is, by all accounts, embarrassing.
(hands down one of the best daemon AUs I’ve ever read. the SYMBOLISM the EMOTION. one day I will print this fic out and bind it in leather so I will have it with me always)
Happy Reading, anon! I hope there are some on this list that you have’t read before.

Aria’s Long List of Lucifer & Deckerstar Fic Recs (Part 6)
Hello, all!  It seems like it’s about that time again to continue my fic rec series!  I haven’t had a ton of time to read since the S4 finale because I had a pretty hellacious summer, after which I’ve been so focused on writing.  Hence why this has taken so long.
DISCLAIMER: These recs are organized by author, and the order is not meant to imply an order of preference.  All recommendations are completed fics unless otherwise noted.  If anyone knows the @ tumblr names for any of the authors I missed tagging, or if I got anything wrong, please let me know.  Lastly, this is just a list of things I’ve read that I really enjoyed, and I want to spread the love.  That’s it.  Period.  It’s not politics, and I have no ulterior motives, okay?
NOTE: You can find my previous five rec posts here (part 1), here (part 2), here (part 3), here (part 4), and here (part 5).
And, so, without further ado!
The Devil Goes to Shul by @arlome.  Deckerstar.  7k words.  Post-S4.  In which Lucifer meets a Rabbi.  This is such an interesting commentary on the differences between the various Abramahamic religions’ perceptions of the Devil.  Rabbi Schulman is a well-drawn, fascinating, fantastic character.  A fic that’s great food for thought, with a dash of good humor, and a little smut thrown in for good measure.
Of Honey, Sulphur, & Bone by @aryanightshade.  Deckerstar.  35k words.  Post-S3.  In which the end of 3x24 goes a little differently.  Cain captures both Lucifer & Chloe and takes them prisoner, absconding with them to his bunker in the desert.  This fic has some graphic blood and gore scenes, so be wary if that’s a trigger for you, but the revelation; Chloe’s dueling panic, doubt, and empathy; the beautiful hurt/comfort; and the emotional pulse of this story makes for a riveting read.
The Ghosts of Picnic Table #29 by @elleflies.  Deckerstar.  Maze & Chloe.  ~50k words when completely posted.  Post-S4.  This story is technically a WIP because it’s still in the process of being posted, but it’s already completely written, and I know it’s good because I betaed it and got to see how it all ends up, so I feel confident recommending it, now.  A year after Lucifer departed, Chloe is still grieving his loss, when an unusual case at a haunted picnic table crops up, and she enlists Maze’s help to investigate.  Lots of female bonding and fun in this story.  And a ton of emotional intimacy and mutual pining for Deckerstar when Lucifer mysteriously starts showing up in Chloe’s dreams.
Boom by emynii & @obliobla.  Lucifer & Dan.  4k words.  In which Lucifer & Dan get trapped under an exploded building, and the only thing that’s stopping Dan from being crushed are Lucifer’s fanned out wings.  Cue revelation.  Cue platonic Douchifer stuff.  And have some hurt Lucifer and hurt Dan to top it off.  A lovely mix.
Trouble by Design by @hiromystory.  Deckerstar.  Lucifer & Dan.  76k words.  Originally recommended as a WIP, now it’s done!  A post-S3 Deckerstar scenario told in novel form. My favorite thing about this story is actually the author’s in-depth exploration of how Dan might react to a Devilish revelation.  Hint: not well.  Hiro deftly tackles Dan’s feelings about some of the questionable stuff he’s done through the lens of him now knowing the punishment that awaits him, and it’s both captivating and heart wrenching.
Guilt by liannabob.  Deckerstar.  22k words.  Post-S3.  In which Chloe doesn’t take the revelation of Lucifer’s devil-ness all that well, and dire consequences ensue.  This fic.  Was.  So.  Angsty.  The idea of Lucifer slumming in Hell loops for things he loves about Earth is just ugh.  So good.  And awful at the same time.  But in a good way.  And I promise the payoff for this angst is so touching and very worth it.
Patrick the Bartender Is Not Paid Enough for This Shit by liannabob.  Patrick.  15k words.  Canon-compliant S1 fic.  I know, I know.  Patrick, you’re saying.  Who the hell is Patrick?  Remember way back in the S1 pilot, when that bartender pops up from behind the bar, after having given Maze some head, and Maze is all cat-caught-the-canary, “You can go, Patrick.”  Yes.  That Patrick.  This fic basically takes that character who never got a single line and gives him a whole personality and backstory and POV.  The premise of this fic is that pretty much every employee at Lux low-key knows (and is fine with the fact) Lucifer is the actual Devil.  And it’s.  AMAZING.  HYSTERICAL.  And PERFECT.  If you never read another OC fic in your life, at least give this one a shot.  You won’t regret it.
Smoke & Mirrors by @theleafpile.  Deckerstar.  80k words.  An all-human mobster AU.  In which Lucifer is the Devil of Los Angeles, and Chloe is still a homicide detective for the LAPD, who gets involved with him against her better judgment.  This fic manages to maintain the integrity and essence of the characters we know and love, while simultaneously transporting them to an entirely new premise, and I loved it.  I love theleafpile’s lyrical writing style.  And I love the little bits of mythology she injects that suggest … this “all human” AU might not be what it seems on the surface.  It takes a special kind of writer to pull off this kind of transformative AU, and theleafpile does it aplomb.
The Free Parking Jackpot Rule by lilith_morgana.  Deckerstar.  3.8k words.  Interstitial, canon-compliant S3 fic.  Offers a little bit more context for the unicorn Trixie painted on Lucifer’s cheek in S3 on monopoly night.  A concentrated shot of angst, with some lovely characterization to boot.
The Delusional Devil by @maimat2.  Deckerstar.  25k words.  Late S2 era.  A casefic case-study on Chloe’s empathy.  Based on the premise that she naturally assumes Lucifer’s wholly human self has some kind of mental trauma or disorder.  When Lucifer starts acting more … more, she assumes he’s losing his grip on reality.  I loved the touching way this story delved into Chloe & Lucifer’s friendship, and of course I loved all the hints of Lucifer’s otherness, which were tempered by Chloe’s human perceptions.
I Will Fear No Evil by @miahclone.  Lucifer & Dan.  18k words.  An interstitial S4 piece, arguably canon-compliant until proven otherwise.  In which Lucifer & Dan are taken prisoner by some cultists, and Lucifer is subjected to an exorcism that goes horribly wrong.  WARNING: if you suffer from emetophobia, this fic will be extremely triggering.  I don’t have emetophobia, and I still got a bit queasy.  There is also some pretty graphic blood & gore.  This is quintessential whump.  But this is well worth a read if you’re a sucker for Dan & Lucifer platonic bonding, hurt Lucifer, hurt/comfort in general, endings that make you go, “Whoa! New head canon!” and humor in the face of shit circumstances.  Which I very much am.  So.  There you go :D
De Profundis by @mswyrr.  Amenadiel & Lucifer.  3k words.  Post-S4.  Amenadiel offers Lucifer a solution to the problem of Hell needing to be ruled by an angel.  A beautifully written brother-bonding fic, and, honestly, I think it’s the most straightforward way to fix how S4 ended.
Time Heals All Wounds by @notonelineff.  Deckerstar.  23k words.  Post-S3.  Fills in the blanks for how things could have gone after S3.  Lucifer is in dire need of medical aid, and Chloe tries to help.  Satisfying hurt/comfort, and a lovely resolution.
Ouroboros by @pandainthestars.  Deckerstar.  3k words.  Events happen slightly differently in 4x09.  Chloe & Lucifer chase after Kinley.  Lucifer goes full-Devil when they’re in pursuit, not when they’re at Lux, which prompts some very interesting/poignant discussion between Chloe & Lucifer.  I loved Chloe’s assertion of the ouroboros metaphor.  A quick, angsty read.
A question of faith by @pixelbypixelfanfic.  Ella & Lucifer.  2.1k words.  A post-reveal fic for Ella, in which Lucifer & Ella discuss her faith.  A poignant, thoughtful little piece that I really enjoyed.
Soup Kitchen by @tarysande.  Deckerstar.  1k words.  Speculative scene-replacement, S4.  A heart-wrenching little interstitial scene for 4x03 that looks at how things may have gone if Lucifer hadn’t already been pushed by Father Kinley into doubting Chloe’s intentions.
my definition of holy (changes with each loss) by @thewollfgang.  Deckerstar.  3k words.  Post-S4.  So … this fic doesn’t end happy.  At all.  Beware if that’s a problem for you.  But if you want some delicious, cutting, heart-wrenching angst to roll around in for a while, this fic is your jam.  The concept of Chloe praying to Lucifer intermittently, giving him updates, sending him her love, as she lives her life on Earth, and he’s stuck in Hell is just … oh, my god, my heart.
drunk in love by @thewollfgang.  Deckerstar.  4k words.  Post-S4.  This fic isn’t in alphabetical order with wollfy’s other fic on this list, but I’m doing that intentionally, because if you want a happy ending for the previous nuclear angst bomb, I recommend head-canoning this as your ultimate resolution, where Lucifer & Chloe are reunited, and everything is gooey and perfect and the world is puppies and kittens.  I live to see tipsy Lucifer & Chloe at Lux through the perspective of their friends/found-family.  I hope we get something like this in S4.
The Trouble with Brittanies by @theyahwehdance.  500 words.  A hysterical little ficlet in which Lucifer calls Chloe and asks for help with the Brittanies.  I saw this ficlet evolve from a live discussion that made me laugh so hard my belly hurt.  I mean, it’s an honest misunderstanding ….
