Elias, their father, worked at a food market stall and Marianne (their mother) owned a clothing store. Makula and their sibling would go out and make deliveries to their customers. When Makula and Bay were old enough, they left their home to expand their parents’ business overseas. Their sibling Bay went to Inazuma ,while Makula went to Mondstadt.

Trauma event: When Makula first came to Mondstadt, they asked a man for directions. Instead of being guided, they got jumped by Treasure hoarders. Elo is my top fave because she's so ridiculously put-upon. She's an accidental Mary-Sue who constantly finds herself neck-deep in trouble, and half the time she's the one who put herself there! Her story arc, triumphs and tragedies were fun to play through at first, but tiring and I find she's more fun to write.

Facts about Elo:

She started out as a simple Watchman, destined to become a Detective. However, her path changed drastically, and started to hear the Call to become a Paladin.

She changed her name from Featherdown when she came of age to help her embrace her future, rather than dwelling on the past.

When Elo was blessed by the goddess Kerellim, part of her blessing was to glow when giving impassioned speeches. Both I, the player, and the GM find this hilarious; Elo does not. She finds it embarrassing, but learns to wield it as the tool the goddess intended.

Farren is Elo's Watch partner, best friend, confidant and mentor. He's my second fave because he's Elo's perfect foil, and just a lovely guy to boot. He's funny, caring and wise. He's got a good line on bad jokes, his banter is en pointe, and his interactions are amazing to write. Half the time he's as bad as Elo, when it comes to getting into trouble, and half the time he's the one pulling others from the fire.

He's amazing with kids and young adults, and always seems to know just what to say to help them through a tough time.

He's a highly skilled detective. He knows Toreguard like the back of his hand, and exactly who to talk to for the intel he needs.

He enjoys the simple things in life: A hearty bowl of stew, a slice of cake and a pint of bitter.

In the light of recent discussions, are there any wangxian tags you immediately save or skip? For me my faves are hurt!WWX, protective!, jealous! or possessive!LWJ, misunderstandings, slow burn, arranged marriage; and I typically don't click on non-canon wangxian dynamics, the 13 years (too dehydrating 😢) and...time-travels (unless they're cracks or heavily recommended), because I get too analytical about parallels, it hurts my head. But usually give LWJ's POV and I'm in :D What about others?

Some of my favorite tags/tropes are time travel, animal transformation/shapeshifting, genderswap (meaning suddenly-becoming-the-opposite-gender rather than always-been-), bodyswap, sharing a mind/body, telepathy/accidental bonding, whump WITH h/c, curses (like proximity curses, or involuntary invisibility - there's never enough of that one!, genderswap, etc.), muteness or any other loss of sense, de-aging/age regression, mates, possessiveness, autistic-coded character (my own house is full of them so I relate), fake/pretend relationship, trauma, first time, D/s (if I'm in a horny mood 😊), fuck or die, sex pollen, one character as a ghost, angst, protective/white knight where one character is in terrible need of rescue and the other just goes full Harlequin hero (I cut my teeth on Harlequins, okay?), touch-starved, Sentinel/guide, Explicit (like, yes, put some sauce on my fic!), a/b/o, accidental baby acquisition (the fact that this tag and trope exists I find hilarious), captives together, huddling for warmth, ...

#10YearPromise - pingxie blabberings

bc i wasn’t able to answer these questions throughout the week (as i’ve been traveling around while being extremely busy), i decided to just collect all of my answers under one post! i never tire talking about pingxie so this was extremely enjoyable ♥ am also practicing some very shameless self promo in this so be prepared!

thank you for @laireshi for organizing this event (i take it’s you alone? am not sure, sorry for my laziness) and being amazing in general ^^ i won’t be able to join as i am still very busy and summer is always pure chaos for me, so i can only hope that other ppl have fun! if you are not aware of 10 Year Promise Pingxie Exchange, you can find the original announcement post here. join in if you have the time and inspiration ^^

and then to my answers which i will be placing under the cut bc i don’t want to flood anyone’s dash with me going bonkers over these two idiots. enjoy tho if you decide to read this :’D ♥

I. What made you ship pingxie?

Back when I got into Reboot bc of ZYL (as has happened to many ppl probably) and then saw stuff about pingxie once I started going through that drama’s tag on tumblr, my first thought about them was that they had to be a crack ship. The way Reboot portrays them as well as their actors and their huuuge age difference affected this a lot, and I was actually cackling at them bc all their moments in Reboot made me just go “oh, socialist brotherhood at its best” in my head. But then I finished watching Reboot’s 1st season (as the 2nd one wasn’t out yet) and started reading some fics. I learned more about them and the canon storyline. I learned how damn devoted they are to each other, and after that, many moments in Reboot gained new meaning in my eyes. So, I think what made me ship pingxie was a mix of Reboot (especially the hallucination moment where Xiaoge dies and Wu Xie loses it bc that’s my jam as I later on became to notice) and then the amazing fics I dug out during that time. After that the love grew stronger as I watched the other dramas, and these days I’m a lost cause. I feel like I spend most of my awake time thinking about these two and their love. They are amazing. I cry rivers for them.

II. Which pingxie version is your favorite?

After finding pingxie, I fell in love with them properly during TLT2. There is just something about that stage of their relationship for me, the stage where both of them are still very tentative about everything but they have deep down accepted that they’re tied now. Wu Xie is figuring out so many things, coming to terms with being betrayed by his uncle and slowly realizing that something bigger is going on behind the scenes. Meanwhile, Xiaoge is learning how to trust Wu Xie and how to accept that he cannot leave this naïve boy behind. It feels very fragile, and I have so many emotions about TLT2 bc of this. Xiaoge is so soft and feels very multilayered. Wu Xie is still his naïve self but is slowly gaining some sharper edges as he comes to face the cruel world. I like how Cheng Yi and Hou Minghao have portrayed this dynamic. Also, TLT2 is just very extra with all the pingxie scenes, who would be able to resist loving them? So, I have to admit that my favorite pingxie is these two, tho Ultimate Note comes very, very close.

III. What’s your favorite pingxie headcanon?

Headcanons are a bit hard for me as I don’t know enough of the canon. I have not read the novels so most of the story I’ve just patched together from all the bits I’ve read from somewhere (here, on twt, in fics) and through the scenes the dramas have shown me. I feel like the whole world is lowkey made of headcanons for me :’D But hmm, my favorite pingxie headcanon… I’d say there are two and then one bonus bc it’s more a Wu Xie related headcanon than just pingxie. The first one is that the pingxie confession happens after the Bronze Gate. It feels like the only moment when they’re both ready for such a thing. I’d say Xiaoge comes to realize his own feelings a lot earlier and he might tell something to unconscious Wu Xie before leaving for ten years, but he will not actually leave Wu Xie with such a burden. He doesn’t want to ask anything when it sounds like he doesn’t even believe that Wu Xie will be willing to wait for him, and I’d say that for him, his feelings are going to be fine even if Wu Xie never learns about them. He might even wish that Wu Xie never learns about them bc he’s not able to promise much as an immortal and amnesiac being (he outlives Wu Xie, most likely forgets him). For Wu Xie however, I’d say he needs time. He really is way too naïve and I’d say that he needs those ten years to realize that he’s in love with his best friend. I dunno who confesses first after Xiaoge returns but I think that only after that decade their relationship is “mature” enough to hold the weight of a confession (even if I also love to play around with the thought of them getting together during the events of Ultimate Note bc that drama offered many good chances for that). Another headcanon for me is that Xiaoge will find a way to die when Wu Xie does. After learning about them more, I feel like Reboot implies this too. Xiaoge is very accepting of Wu Xie’s death but in the last moments, when he really thinks that this is going to be it for Wu Xie, he hesitates. We see a spark of desperation there, and I’ve come to think that his initial plan, the plan he came up with once he got that call from Wu Xie and knew he would join Wu Xie on his last adventure, was to see this through for Wu Xie’s sake and then leave and die alone. I don’t know how much there would be left for Zhang Qiling after Wu Xie is gone. I feel like this is also what Wu Xie fears. But would he really resent Xiaoge for joining him in death after living such a long and hard life? I’d say no and I’d say that even Pangzi accepts this as one of the most likely outcomes. The bonus one then feels very personal to me. I don’t usually talk about this bc I feel so unsure of even mentioning this but I’ve seen others with similar thoughts so am sharing! I’ve never before gotten any vibes about a character’s sexuality in a drama I’ve watched but Reboot Wu Xie looked at me once in the eye and all I could hear was my brain yelling “asexual”. So, that is just my personal headcanon for Wu Xie. He’s ace and proud of it. He can flirt etc. but sex makes him go naah. He doesn’t need it or want it. He can appreciate beauty and hot ppl without wanting to sleep with them and I think his relationship with Xiaoge fits very well into this. I don’t have any personal experiences with being ace but I feel like Wu Xie has read the name once, shrugged and gone, “guess that’s me” and continued on with his life. He’s badass like that and I love him for it. (take a very relevant meme lol from this post)

IV. What’s the ideal pingxie date?

Ah, christ. I dunno if I’ve ever thought about them going on a date? In the middle of tomb raiding, hospital trips and fighting against powers bigger than themselves, I’ve rarely seen any time for them to do something like that lol. But after Ultimate Note, I’ve thought about star gazing a lot. Just them, the infinite night sky and some lonely hilltop. They would probably take a blanket with them, huddle together and talk about things in hushed voices. Wu Xie would go on a ramble about all the constellations and their meanings and mythology behind them and Xiaoge would just nod at him and watch Wu Xie talking. Maybe he would offer some tidbits in the middle of the rambling, making Wu Xie smile brightly. It would be relaxing and comfortable and loving. They would make out a lil bit. Would maybe lie down and play with each other’s hair. All their worries would feel insignificant. Wu Xie would fall asleep for a moment and Xiaoge would wake him up with a kiss to get him moving again so that they don’t need to sleep on the cold ground. They would return home and drink something warm and then go to sleep, cuddled together and happy. relevant edit x

V. What’s your favorite pingxie getting together scenario?

I guess I already talked about this a bit but let me elaborate then! As said, I’d see it happening after the Bronze Gate. I am not sure if it would be right away (they’re both going through so much trauma at that point) or if it would happen after Reboot (maybe we would still need Wu Xie almost dying for them to get their shit together), but I’d say it happens in a rush either way. It’s one of those “I have to tell you something before it’s too late” -type of moments. Or one of those “Bc I love you, you idiot!” -type of moments. I feel like I keep thinking that maybe Wu Xie would have to confess first bc as said, Xiaoge wouldn’t like to burden Wu Xie with his feelings when there’s so little he can give in the sense of normalcy. But then again, I have written a oneshot where Xiaoge is the first one to confess and that always feels better for me. That at some point Xiaoge feels secure enough to tell Wu Xie about his own feelings. That he feels confident and comfortable enough to say it out loud while still expecting nothing in return bc he knows that Wu Xie won’t abandon him either way. But no matter how that happens, I always see it as this dam breaking. The emotions finally become too strong. Something happens that reminds them that life is too short. Something happens that makes them finally talk it out and ah, Pangzi can finally take a break, what a joy

VI. What’s your favorite pingxie moment?

The Lost Tomb:

Xiaoge rescues Wu Xie from the shibie

Wu Xie worrying over unconscious Xiaoge plus taking care of him in the hotel room

The Pingxie MomentTM aka Xiaoge saving Wu Xie from falling and then cradling the boy to his chest while thumb rubbing his shoulder

The Lost Tomb 2:

Xiaoge revealed to be Baldie and Wu Xie yelling at him about it

Lowkey the whole underwater tomb arc bc holy shit that’s gay

Wu Xie losing it when Xiaoge doesn’t come up from the underwater tomb, diving after him and then almost dying himself + Pangzi getting angry at him for being stupid

VII. What is the best gift Wu Xie and Xiaoge could give each other?

I haven’t really thought about this type of stuff either bc we have already seen a ton of gifts being exchanged! I love the watch Wu Xie gives to Xiaoge in TLT2 as mentioned (it’s so silly but also so sweet) and I love it that Wu Xie gifts Xiaoge with a new sword in Ultimate Note. Also, I feel like I can count the food Wu Xie leaves for Xiaoge in Ultimate Note and that one moment where Xiaoge offers his knife for Wu Xie as a “pen”. They would give anything for each other as long as the other asked (which they never do) so I dunno what type of gift would matter the most. As it’s so hard to say, let me talk about one more headcanon that I’ve been thinking about ever since the infamous Bazaar photoshoot for Ultimate Note/XYL & ZSX. So, we see them having matching rings and necklaces in that photoshoot. I think jewelry would be kind of difficult for Xiaoge to wear when he needs to fight, as jewelry could be a hindrance in that type of situation But my brain won’t shut up about “pingxie married!!!” when I ask this question from it. To be honest, I do not see pingxie getting married in the traditional sense. They don’t need something like that after everything they’ve gone through. But I like to play around with the thought of promise rings. Just them exchanging rings for fun, for their own sakes, to have something concrete that reminds them of their promise to each other and of their feelings. Maybe even Xiaoge could wear that ring under his gloves idk. But am a sucker for that thought so my answer to this is then simply: a ring. relevant edits x x

welcome to me going insane over a book

First of all, Nico:

For those of you who just somehow stumbled upon this (feel free to skip this part if you know already), Nico di Angelo is a character from a book series called "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" (and some others in the same universe :D). Nico was first introduced at the age of 10 in "The Titan's Curse", where he was portrayed as a very bubbly and energetic kid. Stuff happens (read; years of trauma including losing his mother, sister, and best friend that he was violently outed to by Eros after growing up catholic in 1930's Italy), and he's left basically a ball of angst and death (son of hades). Enter the love of his life (and mine tbh), Will Solace, who is a literal child of the sun and a walking light (that's not all he is but ill talk about that later), who actually helps him. After years of death and longing, Nico is able to be happy at camp because of Will and his siblings. But, as much as i love solangelo, Nico's personal growth is my second favorite thing about this book.

Nico is a child of death, but death is normal. Death is good, and natural. Nico isn't a child of darkness, he's a child of life as much as he is a child of death. It's not the Sun and the Moon, or the Sun and the Eclipse (that sounds weird but bear with me 😃), it's the Sun and the Star. Nico has his own light. Stars can explode, cause destruction, break everything around them, but when they're stable, happy, they shine just as bright as the sun. Nico quite literally comes to terms with his personal demons. He lets them go, he heals, but they choose to come with him. It's accurate, real, because you can heal, but they will always be there. The way they behave around Will is exactly like the embodiments of trauma would. They're skittish, maybe even aggressive, but because Nico trusts Will, they do too. Even the way Nico treats them is accurate for a lot of mentally-ill people (read; me)! He gives them a cute name (the Cocoa Puffs), he treats them like his kids (healing your inner child), and he pampers them (self-care). The Sun and the Star finally lets Nico be happy.

Favorite Books of 2020

I wanted to put together a list! I read 74 new books this year, and I keep track of that on Goodreads - feel free to add or follow me if you want to see everything! I’m going to focus on the highlights, and the books that stuck with me personally in one way or another, in approximate order. Also, all but two of them (#5 and #7 on the honorable mention list) are queer/trans in some way. Links are to Goodreads, but if you’re looking to get the books, I suggest your library, the Libby app using your library, your local bookstore, or Bookshop.

The Faggots & Their Friends Between Revolutions by Larry Mitchell, illus. by Ned Asta (originally published 1977). I had a hard beginning of the year and was in a work environment where my queerness was just not welcomed or wanted. I read this in the middle of all of that, and it helped me so much. I took this book with me everywhere. I read it on planes. I read it on the bus, and on trains, and at shul. I showed it to friends... sometimes at shul, or professional development conferences. It healed my soul. Now I can’t find it and might get a new copy. When I reviewed it, in February, I wrote: “I think we all need this book right now, but I really needed this book right now. Wow. This book is magic, and brings back a sense of magic and beauty to my relationship with the world.” Also I bought my copy last July, in a gay bookstore on Castro St. in SF, and that in itself is just beautiful to me. (Here’s a post I made with some excerpts)

Once & Future duology, especially the sequel, Sword in the Stars, by A.R. Capetta and Cory McCarthy. Cis pansexual female King Arthur Ari Helix (she's the 42nd reincarnation and the first female one) in futuristic space with Arab ancestry (but like, from a planet where people from that area of earth migrated to because, futuristic space) works to end Future Evil Amazon.com Space Empire with her found family with a token straight cis man and token white person. Merlin is backwards-aging so he's a gay teenager with a crush and thousands of years of baggage. The book’s entire basis is found family, and it's got King Arthur in space. And the sequel hijacks the original myth and says “fuck you pop culture, it was whitewashed and straightwashed, there were queer and trans people of color and strong women there the whole time.” Which is like, my favorite thing to find in media, and a big part of why I love Xena so much. It’s like revisionist history to make it better except it’s actually probably true in ways. Anyway please read these books but also be prepared for an absolutely absurd and wild ride. Full disclosure though, I didn’t love the first book so much, it’s worth it for the sequel!

The Wicker King by K. Ancrum. This book hurt. It still hurts. But it was so good. It took me on a whole journey, and brought me to my destination just like it intended the whole time. The author’s note at the end made me cry! The sheer NEED from this book, the way the main relationship develops and shifts, and how you PERCEIVE the main relationship develops and shifts. I’m in awe of Ancrum’s writing. If you like your ships feral and needy and desperate and wanting and D/S vibes and lowkey super unhealthy but with the potential, with work, to become healthy and beautiful and right, read this book. This might be another one to check trigger warnings for though.

The Entirety of The Daevabad Trilogy by S.A. Chakraborty. I hadn’t heard of this series until this year, when a good friend recommended it to me. It filled the black hole in me left by Harry Potter. The political and mystical/fantasy world building is just *chef’s kiss* - the complexity! The morally grey, everyone’s-done-awful-things-but-some-people-are-still-trying-to-do-good tapestry! The ROMANCE oh my GOD the romance. If I’m absolutely fully invested in a heterosexual romance you know a book is good, but also this book had background (and then later less background) queer characters! And the DRAMA!!! The third book went in a direction that felt a little out of nowhere but honestly I loved the ride. I stayed up until 6am multiple times reading this series and I’d do it again.

An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon. I loved this book so much that it’s the only book I reviewed on my basically abandoned attempt at a book blog. This book is haunting, horrifying, disturbing, dark, but so, so good. The character's voices were so specific and clear, the relationships so clearly affected by circumstance and yet loving in the ways they could be. This is my favorite portrayal of gender maybe ever, it’s just... I don’t even have the words but I saw a post @audible-smiles made about it that’s been rattling in my head since. And, “you gender-malcontent. You otherling,” as tender pillow talk??? Be still my heart. Be ready, though, this book has all the triggers.. it’s a .

Felix Ever After by Kacen Callender. This book called me out on my perspective on love. Also, it made me cry a lot. And it has two different interesting well-written romance storylines. And a realistic coming-into-identity narrative about a Black trans demiboy. And a nuanced discussion of college plans and what one might do after college. And some big beautiful romcom moments. I wish I had it in high school. I’m so glad I have it now! (trigger warning for transphobia & outing, but the people responsible are held accountable by the end, always treated as not okay by the narrative, and the MC’s friends, and like... this is ownvoices and it’s GOOD.)

The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern. My Goodreads review says, “I have no idea what happened, and I loved it.” That’s not wrong, but to delve deeper, this book has an ethereal feeling that you get wrapped up in while reading. Nothing makes sense but that’s just as it should be. You’re hooked. It is so atmospheric, so meta, so fascinating. I’ve seen so many people say they interpreted this character or that part or the ending in all different ways and it all makes sense. And it’s all of this with a gay main character and romance and the central theme, the central pillar being a love of and devotion to stories. Of course I was going to love it.

Fierce Femmes and Notorious Liars: A Dangerous Trans Girl’s Confabulous Memoir by Kai Cheng Thom. “Because maybe what really matters isn’t whether something is true, or false. Maybe what matters is the story itself; what kinds of doors it opens, what kinds of dreams it brings.” This book was so good and paradigm shifting. It reminded me of #1 on this list in the way it turns real life experience and hard, tragic ones at that (in this case, of being a trans girl of color who leaves home and tries to make a life for herself in the city, with its violence), into a beautiful, haunting fable. Once upon a time.

I Wish You All the Best by Mason Deaver. I need to reread this book, as I read it during my most tranceful time of 2020 and didn’t write a review, so I forgot a lot. What I do remember is beautiful and important nonbinary representation, a really cute romance, an interesting parental and familial/sibling dynamic that was both heartbreaking and hopeful, and an on-page therapy storyline. Also Mason Deaver just left twitter but was an absolutely hilarious troll on it before leaving and I appreciate that (and they just published a Christmas novella that I have but haven’t read yet!)

The Truth Is by NoNieqa Ramos. It took a long time to trust this book but I’m so glad I did. It’s raw and real and full of grief and trauma (trigger warnings, that I remember, for grief, death (before beginning of book), and gun violence). The protagonist is flawed and gets to grow over the course of the book, and find her own place, and learn from the people around her, while they also learn to understand her and where she’s coming from. It’s got a gritty, harsh, and important portrayal of found family, messy queerness, and some breathtaking quotes. When I was 82% through this book I posted this update: “This book has addressed almost all of my initial hesitations, and managed to complicate itself beautifully.”

Anger is a Gift by Mark Oshiro. I wasn’t actually in the best mental health place to read this book when I did (didn’t quite understand what it was) but it definitely reminded me of what there is to fight against and to fight for, and broke my heart, and nudged me a bit closer to hope. The naturally diverse cast of characters was one of the best parts of this book. The romance is so sweet and tender and then so painful. This book is important and well-written but read it with caution and trigger warnings - it’s about grief and trauma and racism and police brutality, but also about love and community.

The Prey of Gods by Nicky Drayden. This is a sci-fi/fantasy/specfic mashup that takes place in near-future South Africa and has world-building myths with gods and demigoddesses and a trip to the world of the dead but also a genetically altered hallucinogenic drug that turns people into giant animals and a robot uprising and a political campaign and a transgender pop star and a m/m couple and all of them are connected. It’s bonkers. Like, so, so absolutely mind-breaking weird. And I loved it.

Crier’s War and Iron Heart by Nina Varela. I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVED the amount of folktales they told each other with queer romances as integral to those stories, especially in Iron Heart. A conversation between the two leads where Crier says she wants to read Ayla like a book, and Ayla says she’s not a book, and Crier explains all the different ways she wants to know Ayla, like a person, and wants to deserve to know her like a person, made me weak. It lives in my head rent-free.

Queen’s Shadow by E.K. Johnston @ekjohnston . I listened to this book on Libby and then immediately listened to it at least one more time, maybe twice, before my borrow time ran out. I love Padmé, and just always wish that female Star Wars characters got more focus and attention and this book gave me that!! And queer handmaidens! And the implication that Sabé is in love with Padmé and that’s just something that will always be true and she will always be devoted and also will make her own life anyway. And the Star Wars audiobooks being recorded the way they are with background sounds and music means it feels like watching a really long detailed beautiful Star Wars movie just about Padmé and her handmaidens.

Sissy: A Coming of Gender Story by Jacob Tobia. I needed to read this. The way Tobia talks about their experience of gender within the contexts of college, college leadership, and career, hit home. I kept trying to highlight several pages in a row on my kindle so I could go back and read them after it got returned to the library (sadly it didn’t work - it cuts off highlights after a certain number of characters). The way they talk about TOKENISM they way they talk about the responsibilities of the interviewer when an interviewee holds marginalized identities especially when no one else in the room does!!! Ahhhh!!!

Bonds of Brass by Emily Skrutskie. Disclaimer for this one that the author was rightfully criticized for writing a Black main character as a white author (and how the story ended up playing into some fucked up stuff that I can’t really unpack without spoiling). But also, the author has been working to move forward knowing she can’t change the past, has donated her proceeds, and this book is really good? It has all the fanfic tropes, so much delicious tension, a totally unexpected plot twist that had me immediately rereading the book. This book was super fun and also kind of just really really good Star Wars fanfiction.

How To Be a Normal Person by T.J. Klune. This book was so sweet, and cute, and hopeful, and both ridiculous and so real. I had some trouble getting used to Gus’ voice and internal monologue, but I got into it and then loved every bit after. The ace rep is something I’ve never seen like this before (and have barely read any ace books but still this was so fleshed out and well rounded and not just like, ‘they’re obsessed with swords not sex’ - looking at you, Once & Future - and leaving it there.) This all felt like a slice of life and I feel like I learned about people while reading it. Some of the moments are so, so funny, some are vaguely devastating. I have been personally victimized by TJ Klune for how he ends this book (a joke, you will know once you read it) but it also reminds me of the end of the “You Are There” episode of Xena and we all know what the answer to that question was.... and I choose to believe the answer here was similar.

You Should See Me in a Crown by Leah Johnson. I wish I had this book when I was in high school. I honestly have complicated feelings about prom and haven’t really been seeking out contemporary YA so I was hesitant to read this but it was so good and so well-written, and had a lot of depth to it. The movie (and Broadway show) “The Prom” wants what this book has.

Plain Bad Heroines by Emily M. Danforth. I never read horror books, so this was a new thing for me. I loved the feeling of this book, the way I felt fully immersed. I loved how entirely queer it was. I was interested in the characters and the relationships, even though we didn’t have a full chance to go super deep into any one person but rather saw the connections between everyone and the way the stories matched up with each other. I just wanted a bit of a more satisfying ending.

Honorable Mention: reread in 2020 but read for the first time pre-2020

Red White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston. I couldn’t make this post without mentioning this book. It got me through this year. I love this book so much; I think of this book all the time. This book made me want to find love for myself. You’ve all heard about it enough but if you haven’t read this book what are you DOING.

In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan @sarahreesbrennan . I reread this one over and over too, both as text and as an audiobook. I went for walks when I had lost my earbuds and had Elliott screaming about an elf brothel loudly playing and got weird looks from someone walking their dog. I love this book so much. It’s just so fun, and so healing to read a book reminiscent of all the fantasies I read as a kid, but with a bi main character and a deconstruction of patriarchy and making fun of the genre a bit. Also, idiots to lovers is a great trope and it’s definitely in this book.

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz. This book is forever so important to me. I am always drawn in by how tenderly Sáenz portrays his characters. These boys. These boys and their parents. I love them. I love them so much. This is another one where I don’t even know what to say. I have more than 30 pages in my tag for this book. I have “arda” set as a keyboard shortcut on my phone and laptop to turn into the full title. This book saved my life.

Last Night I Sang to the Monster by Benjamin Alire Sáenz. This book hurts to read - it’s a story about trauma, about working through that trauma, healing enough to be ready to hold the worst memories, healing enough to move through the pain and start to make a life. It’s about found family and love and pain and I love it. It’s cathartic. And it’s a little bit quietly queer in a beautiful way, but that’s not the focus. Look up trigger warnings (they kind of are spoilery so I won’t say them here but if you have the potential to be triggered please look them up or ask me before reading)

Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine. When asked what my all time favorite book is, it’s usually this one. Gail Carson Levine has been doing live readings at 11am since the beginning of the pandemic shut down in the US, and the first book she read was Ella Enchanted. I’ve been slowly reading it to @mssarahpearl and am just so glad still that it has the ability to draw me in and calm me down and feels like home after all this time. This book is about agency. I love it.

Radio Silence by Alice Oseman @chronicintrovert . I’ve had this on my all-time-faves list since I read it a few years ago and ended up rereading it this year before sending a gift copy to a friend, so I could write little notes in it. It felt a little different reading it this time - as I get further away from being a teenager myself, the character voice this book is written in takes a little longer to get used to, but it’s so authentic and earnest and I love it. I absolutely adore this book about platonic love and found family and fandom and mental illness and abuse and ace identity and queerness and self-determination, especially around college and career choices. Ahhh. Thank you Alice Oseman!!!

Leia: Princess of Alderaan by Claudia Gray @claudiagray . I have this one on audible and reread it several times this year. I love the fleshing out of Leia’s story before the original trilogy, I love her having had a relationship before Han, and the way it would have affected her perspective. I also am intrigued by the way it analyses the choices the early rebellion had to make... I just, I love all the female focused new Star Wars content and the complexity being brought to the rebellion.

Oooh yay! Okay so she’s not actually mine — she was created by @hopefullypessimistic84 , who I always have read over anything I use Julia in for characterization consistency — and I’m sure Hope will have more to add but here’s what I’ve got!

First off, for those of you who have no idea what we’re talking about: Hope found a camper in one of the old photos and adopted her, and now she is one of my favorite characters ever. She shows up pretty frequently in my writing bc I love her.

Anyway! Here’s a bunch of random shit — some of it was invented by Hope, some of it is my hcs (can you have hcs of an oc version of an extra? Idk but I did it) — and I hope someone finds it mildly entertaining:

She met David and Jasper in their first summer at camp, so they’re all about the same age; if anything she might be a year or so younger but it’s all quite close, and I imagine they went through the same years in school.

She doesn’t live near David — if we’re placing him up in Canada she’s somewhere in a relatively large city near the American border. Depending on if you put Camp Campbell on the east coast (my hc) or the west (what it probably actually is), she most likely grew up in NYC or Seattle.

She’s more like Jasper than David: not super bubbly, not all that into nature, and very suspicious of anything Campbell related.

I’m pretty sure she’s an only child, but it doesn’t matter because she adopted David and Jasper as her brothers and 1000% thinks of herself as their sister.

She’s an ace lesbian, and somewhere on the butch spectrum. Depending on my mood she’s either a fat leather butch or a tiny elfin tomboy, but no matter what she’s short and has a motorcycle jacket.

Actually it’s spoilers but who cares because it’ll take me forever to get there: she’s actually going to fall in love with another OC, this time one I made up! She meets Gwen’s sister Audree through incredibly awkward in-law interactions, because Hope and I decided to mash our OCs together. Their relationship is a little ….complicated, because they’re so dissimilar, but it works.

I’m pretty sure Julia ends up being a professional photographer. She lives in (see city mentioned in #2) but travels a lot for her job. What kind of photos???? Uhhhhhhhh no idea; my brain is thinking like corporate somehow, or real estate? Something more practical than artistic, but Hope would probably know for sure and I don’t know dick about photography.

Her job and long distance means she doesn’t get to see David (or Jasper, if it’s an AU where he lives) a lot, but she keeps them all in touch with the aggressive tenacity of a bulldog.

She’s very colorful and generous with her profanity.

If you hurt someone she loves she will kill you and no one will ever find your body.

She is made of sarcasm and a surprising amount of rage.

She grew up extremely poor (not sure what the family situation is but I feel like it was a 1-parent household), so even though she ended up being very successful she still carries a lot of trauma and mindset from spending her childhood not having enough to really get by. (This is probably the major cause of content with Audree, who grew up rich and then got richer.)

I don’t remember what we were thinking about Jules’ grown-up haircut, but her natural color is definitely purple.

She calls David Davey, Sunshine, and Red. I don’t know what she’d call Jasper and Gwen.

She probably stopped going to Camp Campbell after Jasper died, either as her own choice or because her parent(s) pulled her out of it, but as an adult she does make a point to visit David there at least once a summer on the anniversary of his death. (Listen we came up with this before we found out what happened to Jasper; cut us some slack here re: canon.)

She didn’t grow out of her pop-punk-emo phase, she grew into it.

I don’t know if she actually rides a motorcycle or just likes the look, but I like to think she at least bought one.

Nothing makes her flustered except pretty girls.

I don’t think she reads that much, but I could see her being a movie buff. Though tbh I really see her as whatever you’d call someone super into music.

Did she skateboard? Does she? I feel like she would.

This one is from a Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries AU that I haven't talked about yet because it's still a mess in my head and I don't particularly care about the murders if I'm being honest, just about the setup they provide. So if this ever gets written, it's only going to be the emotional scenes with character development and barely anything on the actual crime solving.

2. What’s your favorite relationship in your story? Could be the main one, one your characters shares with a friend, etc.

My favorite relationship is between Griffin (the main character) and Bloom, who she takes in at the end of the first episode since Bloom has nowhere to go (or that's what she tells her) and isn't quite of age yet. I love the way they rely on each other since both of them are loners of their own doing because they're both convinced they are dangerous to the people around them and keep their distance to keep everyone else safe from themselves. It turns out that Griffin was friends with Bloom's dead parents and the relationship between the two of them helps Griffin come to terms with her past and her involvement in the events that killed Bloom's parents. Griffin helps Bloom break away from her fear of herself and learn more about herself and her abilities. They just really make each other's lives livable and much more and I love how they bring out so much positive change in the other.

3. If you had to direct a scene from your fic, what would you choose? Why? What would it look like? What techniques would you use to convey certain emotions? What would the set look like?

I think I'd pick the scene where Griffin's best friend - Faragonda - is brought in for questioning on suspicion of murder. I choose this scene because it brings out the most emotions from Faragonda. She's a warm person but she has a lot of trauma and hurt buried deep down and this scene brings all of that to the surface. Her private life and her emotional state are undergoing scrutiny by a person who's a stranger to her and by her best friend and she has things she would like to keep private from both of them. There's a big moment in the scene where feelings of hurt and pain between Griffin and Faragonda come out and there's a very tense feeling because that is a big reveal that they need to deal with to keep their friendship going but in the current moment they need to push it down in order to be able to prove Faragonda's innocence and there are these opposing impulses that are both aimed at saving their friendship in completely different ways. There's a lot of unwillingness on Faragonda's part to admit the truth even when she knows that not admitting it could get her in jail for murder and there's a lot of desperation on Griffin's part to help her friend only to be slapped in the face with how detrimental her past decisions have been to their friendship. On top of that, there's also the matter of them both a) mourning their shared friend that was killed, b) find the killer in order to honor their friend and find justice for her murder and c) shame that neither of them knows their dead friend well enough to be of more use to the investigation. It's a very emotional scene and one that speaks volumes of their characters and friendship.

Now I don't know much about directing but the scene would take place in a room for questioning and I would keep it as decluttered as possible. Only a table and chairs and the characters inside. Both as a way of leaving them nowhere to hide from the truth and so that there won't be anything to distract from the emotions that are taking place. Even their clothing would probably be an idea plainer than usual for that purpose. There will be, of course, fidgeting with any part of their outfits and avoidance of eye contact. I would mostly focus the camera on Griffin and Faragonda with enough time for the words that are said to sink in for both of them. There will only be quick shots of Valtor to remind that he is there both as an outsider to their friendship (something that will annoy Faragonda) and as the new variable that they desperately need to get out of the mess they've made (since left to their own devices, they managed to end up with suspicions of murder and bitterness between them). I could see Griffin standing while Faragonda and Valtor are sitting and towering over them as the one with the highest drive to get everything resolved (since she doesn't have any notions that are holding her back like the other two do). There's definitely a distance between her and Faragonda and it doesn't grow when the reveals happen but it's there to show the way they are stuck at a certain distance from each other thanks to their choices. Valtor is very much the one directing the conversation, though, and handling the impact that the confessions make on the two of them. That's all I can think of for now. I tried my best but you tell me if you'd hire me as a director. XD

4. What are your main character(s)’ motivations? What do you consider their main drivers?

Griffin's motivation in coming back to Magix City and solving crimes is to make up for her past mistakes. She's done some bad things that she can't make her peace with despite the long time that's passed (over 17 years) and she is trying to do the right thing now. Or at least that's what she tells herself. In fact, she is trying to run away from the overwhelming guilt she feels about her mother's death and she's trying to protect her father from herself because she's making him suffer with her inability to let go of that as she's still hunting for the killer over two decades later. She feels that if she finds out who murdered her mother and finds firm evidence of the motive, it would help her put the past to rest (and maybe feel less guilty).

The motivation of the other main character - Valtor - is actually a big twist so like MAJOR SPOILERS (I say like I'm confident this will definitely see the light of day and it might very well never see the light of day but still)). Valtor's main focus is finding a way out of the situation he's in where he's being blackmailed into working for the wrong side of the law. He did some things he shouldn't have (much like Griffin) and now they're being hung over his head by the big baddies and he needs to do what he's told which makes Griffin feel wildly betrayed when she learns about that in the last season. And I still haven't figured out what his cover-up motivation will be while he's hiding his true intentions because I haven't had time yet to consider all the characters individually while I'm piecing together the big picture.

There are several other characters who make appearances in almost every episode but I haven't yet figured out all of this AU so I'd rather not talk about them before I've decided what goes where.

Here's my 100 questions for my OC thing!

My OC is Laureli, a 6'2 Altmer trying to make his way in Skyrim

1. What do they smell like?

Whatever alchemy ingredient he’s been working with, really. Lavender is what he smells like most often, though.

2. What is their voice like?

A smooth-ish medium pitch Altmer voice that has elements of calm and irritation.

3. What is their biggest motivator?

Helping others through his alchemy. He wants to improve medicine for Skyrim, as well as all of Tamriel.

4. What is their most embarrassing memory?

He had a whole scientific presentation one year that ended up being completely wrong. He got humiliated in front of everyone.

5. How do they deal with/react to pain?

Winces at it, curses, and then gets to treating the problem.

6. What do they like to wear?

Functional clothes that keep him warm and allow him to carry alchemy ingredients in his pockets.

7. Which of their relationships have impacted them most positively?

The relationships with some of the people he’s helped over the years. It gave him a sense of purpose and fulfillment knowing that he could help people, save people.

8. What’s the weirdest thing they’ve ever eaten?

He’s an alchemist...in Skyrim...I’m pretty sure there are a few contenders… (giants toe, large/small antlers, ectoplasm, the list goes on)

9. Describe the way that they sleep.

Normal side sleeper. Prefers to sleep on his left side.

10. What is their favorite food/kind of food?

Horker stew. It’s actually way better than he thought it would be.

11. What do they feel most insecure about?

If what he’s doing is good enough. He has big problems with perfectionism that still persist with him even after leaving Summerset.

12. How do they like to dress?

Robes with an alchemy enchantment and a hood.

13. How do they react to feelings of guilt?

He tries to shake them off, but has panic attacks and whatnot sometimes as a result of them.

14. How do they react to/deal with betrayal?

Is completely shattered by it. He’s dealt with this so many times before, though, so he keeps his cards close to his chest.

15. What is their greatest achievement?

Creating potions that help much more than the average cure disease potion would, as well as all sorts of other concoctions. Also, he’s created a sort of disinfectant and is working on a hand sanitizer.

16. What are they like when they’ve gotten too little sleep?

Cranky, cranky, cranky.

17. What are they like when they’re drunk?

Drunk? Oh no no no no Laureli does not drink (and even if he did he’d be out real quick)

18. What kind of music do they enjoy?

He isn’t really into music, but he enjoys the songs the bard plays at the Bannered Mare.

19. Are they right or left handed?

Right, but is practicing with his left hand too in case something happens to his right.

20. Fears?

Death and failure, mostly.

21. Favorite kind of weather?

As the sun rises and there’s dew all over the grass, the light reflecting through each drop.

22. Favorite color?

The color of eyes. Or, more specifically, the hundreds of little pinpricks of different colors inside of eyes, It’s really quite fascinating.

23. Do they collect anything?

OH YEAH. So many different alchemy ingredients and random stuff to be used in his next works-

24. Do they prefer either hot or cold weather more?

Cold, which is good since he lives in Skyrim.

25. What is their eye color?

Chartreuse (like most Altmer)

26. What is their race/ethnicity?

Altmer

27. Hair color?

White

28. Are they happy where they are currently?

Yup. Breezehome is small, but manageable, and Whiterun is a decent hold to live in.

29. Are they a morning person?

Yes. He gets tired around 9 and can’t stay up past 12.

30. Sunrise or sunset?

Sunrise.

31. Are they more messy or more organized?

Very organized. Again, he’s a perfectionist.

32. Pet peeves?

People touching his things as well as people inserting themselves into his business.

33. Do they own any objects of significant personal importance?

An amulet of Talos a Nord gave him. He hadn’t gotten the chance to learn much about Talos at home, and he found it very interesting talking to the local Nords about their beliefs. That amulet reminds him of his first day in Skyrim, the first day of his new life.

34. Least favorite food?

Taffy treats, or anything with that sort of texture and stickiness that can get stuck to his teeth very easily.

35. Least favorite color?

Very pale green. It looks gross.

36. Least favorite smell?

Death. (Yes, death has a smell)

37. When was the last time they cried?

Recently.

38. Were they with anybody the last time they cried?

No. Oh Auri-el, no no no no. He cries alone and he makes sure of it.

39. Tell us about one of the times they got injured?

Was in a fire when he was younger, he has a burn going up the inner leg on his right leg.

40. Do they have any scars?

Only mental ones. (and the burn scar on his leg)

41. Do they struggle with any mental health issues?

Perfectionism, past abuse, self hate, among others.

42. Do they have any bad habits?

Picking at his nails. He knows it makes them hurt and get bloody, but sometimes he just can’t help it.

43. Why might someone dislike them?

He can be very rude if he’s working, but to be fair, it is really annoying to be bothered in the middle of your work.

44. Why might someone love them?

Who wouldn’t love an overworked science boye? But in all seriousness, if he loves someone, he will be very caring towards them and is also just great listener. Tries not to care any more though because of personal trauma.

45. Do they believe in ghosts?

Yup. He’s heard of people’s encounters with them. Honestly, you’d be stupid to not believe in them.

46. Is there anyone they would trust with their lives?

At this point? No. Farkas later down the line? Yes.

47. Are they romantically interested in anyone?

Farkas, but we ain’t talking about that yet~

49. Do they like surprises?

No. Please do not surprise this poor man he will stagger back and crash into everything.

He takes a few seconds to acknowledge it and then gets on with his work.

Yup! A Mom, a Dad, a younger sister, and a male cousin that lives nearby (he’s in the Thalmor and the whole family has very Pro-Thalmor views)

HAH- no~

INTJ (Damn this list for making me look up stereotypes for this. Honestly I hate the MBTI system so much-)

Yes, but they are often so tangled up that it’s hard to get any real meaning from them.

“It’s fine, it’s fine, I’ll be fine-” Hopes that he’ll be fine but is really scared about it.

60. What is something that they’re sure to laugh at?

Bad science puns. He will stifle a chuckle before telling you how bad your joke was.

61. When bored, how do they pass time?

This man does not get bored. He will always find something alchemy related to study or look into.

62. Do they enjoy being outside?

Yes. Laureli loves the Skyrim weather (for the most part. Places like Dawnstar and Winterhold suck)

Yes. He has the typical Altmer accent.

“Why is this here? This isn’t mine.”

He would probably take too long deciding and die before he could do/say anything.

Sex repulsed asexual.

Nope.

He’s seen so much it would take a lot to surprise him here.

Yes, definitely

Not really. (Lucky)

Nope, unless you press his buttons. His anger is pretty much “What in the name of Auri-el is wrong with you?! Don’t touch my equipment!!”

Very...until you hit his limit. Then he gets passive aggressive.

76. Are they good at cooking?

Not really. He can be good at it, he just chose not to learn in favor of working on his projects. Can make enough to live on, though.

77. Favorite insult? Do they insult people often?

He doesn't have a favorite insult (he rarely insults people).

78. How do they act when they’re particularly happy?

Talking fast, pacing, flappy hands.

79. What do they do when they learn about other people’s fears?

Try to avoid bringing those fears up around them and avoiding making fun of them. If their fear is nearby, he will either tell them or take care of it. (which is good because Farkas is scared of spiders)

80. Are they trustworthy?

Yes, but you have to be a very certain kind of person to work with him.

81. Do they try to hide their emotions? Are they good at it?

Sometimes, especially romantic feelings. Romantic attraction? Nope, not possible- (It totally is; he’s in denial)

With all of the walking he does around various holds, yes.

83. Are they comfortable with the way they look?

Yes. He’s a perfectionist with many things, but has learned to let go a bit more when it comes to his appearance. He still will take ages to get ready, though.

84. What are some physical features that they find attractive on people?

Tattoos, braids, basically everything you’d see on a typical Nord. It’s so different from his home and he’s completely enamored.

85. What kind of personalities do they find attractive?

Himbo nord men. Sweet morons basically.

86. Do they like sweet foods?

Not really. Sweet foods do have their place, but he isn’t wanting to get any cavities, so he tries to limit his sugar. (Especially since Altmer live 200-300 years aprox)

52 (~20s for an Altmer)

Tall, but about average for an Altmer

89. Do they wear glasses or contacts?

No, but if he did he would have half-moon spectacles.

Not really. He doesn’t really think anyone is attractive. (Well, except for Nord himbos, but he doesn’t know that until he meets Farkas)

Practically nonexistent, but when there is humor it’s mostly dry and sardonic.

That sort of focused work mode you get in when you’re really concentrating, as well as somewhat-sociable-but-still-kind-of-tired-and-grumpy

93. What kinds of things anger them?

People messing up his equipment. Oh sweet Auri-el, if you touch his things he will explode. Also, he hates the racism that the Thalmor promote. (He hates racism in general, but he hates the Thalmor’s views the most).

94. Outlook on life?

“It sucks, but I do find quite a bit fascinating and I’ll help where I can.”

95. What kind of things make them sad/depressed?

His perfectionism, how lonely he knows he is, and more.

96. What is their greatest weakness?

Again, his perfectionism, as well as having his work dictate more in his life than he should.

97. What is the greatest strength?

His brain. He remembers small details extremely well, and is practically an encyclopedia when it comes to alchemy.

98. Something that they regret?

How awful he used to be to everyone back home. He got a lot of pushback on his dreams and who he was, so he lashed out. Even though there wasn’t much he could do there, he still regrets hiring his family and wants to try at a relationship again with them (lol good luck).

99. Biggest accomplishment?

How is this different from “Greatest Achievement”?

100. Create your own! (Why is his alchemy so different from the norm?)

Because he’s trying to do something much more along the lines of modern medicine as opposed to just potions.

101. (Bonus!) Why is he in Skyrim?

Because it’s rather lacking in the medicine department compared to the other provinces, so he decided his talents would be best used there. Obviously, his family protested, but he went anyways.

Hey Niu! :3 This might be weird, but do you have any book recommendations to give? I have done already a few reading challenges during corona, so now I am looking for something new :D

I read only facts because my mind can’t picture anything while I read (thus fanfiction is the only fiction I read because I know how all look like). But since you ask, I think you are aware of it. :3

Here are some of my fave books and some I have considered getting whenever I can:

The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma (Besser van der Kolk) A really good book for anyone who seeks out healing and better understanding of themselves. It has plenty of example how mind affects the body and how it can be reversed. Please note that the patient examples are very triggering, so proceed with caution.

Lucifer - The Devil In The Middle Ages (Jeffrey Burton Russell) A book of how medieval church and different heretic views saw the evil, the Devil and The God. Goes actually all to way to romantic era and covers a bit also Islamic views of the evil. Jeffrey Burton Russell has plenty of books about the subject of evil/Satan and some other medieval church VS pagan things, like witchcraft.

Medieval Punishments - The Illustrated History of Torture (William Andrews). This book was published in late 19th century, and it covers ONLY medieval English punishments. It’s not so much about torture than about criminal convictions. Super easy to read and very interesting! Is definitely not as horrible as it sounds by the title.

Real Wolfmen - True Encounters in Modern America (Linda S. Godfrey) This book contains from cover to cover eyewitness testimonials of Dogmen and other upright walking canines in the USA. Super exciting! Linda Godfrey has been studying dogmen for over 25 years. She also has another book containing eye witness testimonies from cover to cover by a name The Michigan Dogman - Werewolves and Other Unknown Canines Across the USA.

Dying to be Me : My Journey from Cancer, to Near Death, to True Healing (Anita Moorjani) This is a wonderful small spiritual book and how to live your life as who you are, told by a person who always lived her live based on others’ expectations so long it made her sick.

And then, some comics!

Sláine - The Horned God Wonderful comic, one of the best in European comic scenes. Tells a story of a feminist barbarian Sláine serving the Old Goddess over the new gods. Overall all Sláine books are great to read (except the newest ones, I didn’t vibe with them), but this is a treat both for a story and for its art.

Wolf Guy - Ookami no Monshou My absolute favorite comic ever! Akira is the last surviving werewolf while his classmate, yakuza boss’s son Haguro gets his eyes on him and decides to hunt him down, no matter what. Art is gorgeous! Note that the series is R18 for a very good reason. Haguro is the best villain ever in my books, hands down!

Goodnight Punpun (Oyasumi Punpun) This is one of the rare comics where character development goes backwards from good to worse. This psychological dark series follow Punpun-named boy from age 6 to 20+. Punpun is drawn as a bird throughout the comic - and later, as a monster with different stylized heads. What I like about this series is that the reader gets to see all the things that are amiss or completely messed up in the characters’ lives, but the characters are not aware of these things regarding each other. Just like in every day life, we don’t know what’s going on or has been going on behind the closed doors of one’s life, mind and body.

(I love cute things. I draw cute things. Humor is more or less always present in what I do. But when it comes to books and comics, I like to consume dark stuff and themes)

I also want to recommend by friend’s Laura Mauro’s horror story collection Sing Your Sadness Deep. Laura has won prizes with her stories and been nominated in important British awards.

8. Which character(s) do you find easiest to write?

That’s hard because it like depends on my mood and the fic. Like. But the ones that I really like are Richie and Billy, but Stan, Eddie, and Steve are also pretty easy.

9. Which character(s) do you find most difficult to write?

Uh… Ben. Lol. I get stuck in my head trying to figure out who Ben is canonically vs the Ben that I like vs the Ben that people want, which is why I haven’t written more with him. But I need to get over it. Ben is so good and needs more love.

10. What’s your favorite genre to write for?

Dramadeys (drama/comedy). Like all the shows/books I’ve written fic for have had a lot of trauma in the stuff I like, but I also need to be able to laugh in it, lol.

11. Who or what do you find yourself writing about most?

Lately I’ve been writing a lot around like death and traumatic incident anniversaries, but I also like to write stupid little fluff pieces. Granted, the fluff pieces always end up having some sort of Feelings, but sometimes I manage mostly fluff lol.

29. Have you ever gone outside of your comfort zone for a fic? How did it turn out?

Yeah. I wrote a platonic Steve and Billy thing, and it’s honestly so good. I kind of want to do more with it, change it a little, and maybe make it less platonic, lol, but it’s so good.

I also wrote something with mom death and cancer, and while it’s like. Not done well kudos wise, I needed to write it and I think it’s one of the best things I’ve written.

30. Tooth-rotting fluff or merciless angst?

Yes. Lol. I like to make characters go through shit and then take bubble baths in the middle of the night with their partner and cuddling, and yeah. I can’t write fluff without feelings, and I have only once written feelings without fluff, but I have fluff planned for someday lol.

12. Tell us about a WIP you’re excited about.

Right now I’m really excited about a Stranger Things/Skeleton Twins au. I’m like changing SO MUCH but. Basically. I’m following the Skeleton Twins storyline with somethings different.

I’m gonna answer the rest under a cut because it involves suicide and like a creepy student/teacher relationship.

Basically, Billy and Max are twins. Billy’s parents are their parents. Neil is still the abusive asshole he is in the show. Their mom killed herself before the start of the fic.

The story picks up after Billy attempts suicide and Max comes to get him to come back to Hawkins so she can help take care of him. She’s married to Lucas (but like is cheating on him with random dudes because self sabotage is strong with the Hargrove family).

While he’s there he meets up with his old teacher/love interest, but like it’s complicated. In the Skeleton Twins, Billy’s character Milo didn’t have a love interest, but… I’m ridiculous and always love harringrove and love The Feels so… Basically, Billy’s old teacher is Steve’s dad. When Billy was 15, like right after his mom died, a teacher tried to start up a relationship with him, but it ended early, and it led to Billy and Max drifting apart. Billy doesn’t know Steve is Rich’s son because Steve lived with his mom as a kid and hardly came to Hawkins. He knows Rich has a son, but he thinks he’s a little kid, not someone his age.

The day after Billy gets back to town, he wanders around, and finds Rich (Steve’s dad), and they have an argument which is basically just Rich telling him to leave. Upset, Billy goes to a gay bar and hooks up with Steve because they are both new and town, and the only two gay dudes who showed up on Dyke Night. (and let me tell you, this whole bit was so fun to write ahahah)

Then Billy tries to talk to Rich again, but this time Rich is more receptive and they plan to get together.

At some point Neil shows up. He’s like a new age cult leader (think John Lenon), and he’s still him, but he’s good at hiding it in front of his followers. He’s still married to Susan, but he’s more abusive towards her, but we don’t see this, it’s just implied. There’s a fight, and even though Billy and Max are often at odds, they support each other here.

That’s what I have written, but planned I’m thinking Billy is going to go to Rich’s, Rich is going to freak out because Steve is there and he’s afraid Steve will find out about him, because Steve knows nothing.

There’s some nice moments with Max and then they get in a fight about Rich. The next day, Billy and Lucas are hanging out and Billy tells Lucas that Max is secretly on birth control (basically) even though they are trying to have a baby. It leads to Lucas confronting Max and it’s bad. Then Max finds Billy in the yard and they get in a HUGE fight, and Max says something Seriously Fucked Up, so Billy leaves. He goes to Rich’s even though he knows he shouldn’t because he doesn’t know what else to do, but then it gets fuzzy.

In the movie they just talk and also get in a fight, but like this… Steve is here.

I’m thinking Steve answers the door, sees a very upset Billy, but they are both like ??? And then Rich comes down and EVERYTHING comes out. Eventually Steve and Billy leave because Billy clearly needs to be not alone, and Rich’s house is out.

They don’t do anything but talk and probably cuddle because our boy is touch starved and sad, so ofc he’s going to wanna cuddle.

The next day on his way out of town, Max calls Billy basically saying goodbye in a way that mirrors Billy’s own suicide note. He rushes to find her and saves her.

It ends with them continuing to live together to like get the support they need and to start healing. Steve is there somewhere, but in the background. It’s going to be so good.

april has had her thirtieth birthday, and has since returned to seattle after stint in ohio being sad. jackson did come to get her from moline, but their current status is undetermined (basically if anyone wants to bring him japril doesn’t have to thrive).

her and jackson were living together pre-ohio, so whether that still stands is also to be determined to be honest.

april is currently waiting to resit her board exams, so she’s as insufferable about them as she was the last time. she needs help studying and part of her is convinced she’s destined to fail again. these will take place june 2021.

april is working as an acting trauma attending, pending the results of her boards. she would have been on limited duties if mia wasn’t still recovering from the crash, but she is nevertheless treading very carefully. she knows there will be no next chance if she fails her boards again - it’s all or nothing for her now.
