Fucking hell put a warning like
‘may cause heart palpitations’
Or
‘caution, may cause blood pressure to rise’
or at the very least
‘caution, may cause salivation.’
I love every pixel.

Came across these photos of Maggie Smith as Miss Bowers for Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile and went “Oh, hello!” rather loudly! Damn, she looks fine in that tux!

In Memory of Dame Maggie Smith
Dame Maggie Smith was a true treasure and talent. She could play frosty and ridged to warm and caring to zany and wild.
While she played many roles on both stage and screen here are my favorites of her film roles.
Professor Minerva McGonagall, The Harry Potter Series

2022 Movie Ranking
Note: 2021 Movie Ranking. As usual, this list is HIGHLY SUBJECTIVE. Still want to catch Skinamarink, Barbarian, Wakanda Forever, The House, and Pinocchio.
Nope: Like Get Out and Us, this was incredibly disturbing but so good. Not sure if I ever want to watch Nope again because characters being eaten alive—eaten alive whole—terrifies me. Anyway, Peele's phenomenal at social commentary. Here, animal exploitation.
Wendell & Wild: So many elements I love! Settings are a funfair-themed afterlife and boarding school. Faustian deals! Diverse character designs. Anti-prison privatization, pro-rehabilation. So the edgy-on-purpose Kat is actually punk. Henry Selick and Jordan Peele plus Key are the dream team!
Turning Red: I am so, so thankful for Shi and co. It's a cute movie all around, but normalizing periods made me adore it. My family was and is always honest about puberty, but many others' aren't. (And no one told me about PCOS.) TR is groundbreaking.
Scream: "No one has made a great Stab movie since the first one." My fave self-aware slasher franchise. And this one tackles one of my biggest pet peeves: fandom entitlement. Also, Kyle Gallner playing a sleazebag for once. 💚
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery
Men: Verdant folk horror about various flavors of misogyny. If I was still in school, I'd write a paper on it.
The Batman: THIS is how you do dark Batman. My favorite version of the Riddler since Batman Forever. (Sorry, Cory Michael Smith.) Riddler acts like he's helping the downtrodden, but the mentally ill are a marginalized group, too. Arthur Fleck knows that. I like how Joker and this are morally complex and the villains have in-film fanbases. Also, Edward ironically crushing on Batman, while despising Bruce. Aw.
The Munsters: The best Rob Zombie flick. I used to say he should stick to music. Now I think he should stick to music and PG-rated romanctic comedy. It's clear Zombie is an aficionado of Universal and other monster movies. It basically is exactly what it set out to be.
Halloween Ends: Anyone who says this "ruined" the franchise hasn't watched all the movies. Giving Michael a fanboy/protégée was a cool idea to explore. And interesting use of irony with the whole falling and dropping.
Smile: If you're into the predetermined death-curse genre, give it a watch.
Everything Everywhere All at Once
Bodies/Bodies/Bodies: Movie that makes fun of classist vapidity... Gen Z style. The characters are petty and self-absorbed. Their allyship is performative and it will give viewers secondhand embarrassment. On purpose.
Death on the Nile: An adaptation of the secondest Christie book I read. (First being The Pale Horse.) While it wasn't really my thing, I totally thought Misses Van Schuyler and Bowers were sapphic in the novel, so it was nice to see that confirmed here.
Weird: The Al Yankovic Story: Nothing against Weird Al. Just not my type of humor.

Watching the Peter Ustinov Death On The Nile on Freevee. I've read the book and seen the Suchet adaptation, but this is the first time I've seen this one.
Spoilers follow
I like the quick-cut from Jackie & Simon kissing to Linnet & Simon's wedding.
Hey, filming at the Sphinx! (or a reasonable mockup)
Writer Salome Otterbourne being a lush wasn't clear until partway through the book. In this movie she's comically soused in every scene. And played by Angela Lansbury.
Bette Davis playing the rich American Mrs Van Schuyler, Maggie Smith as her butchish nurse-companion Miss Bowers.
Oh my, Linnet is suing Salome for defamation.
Salome's daughter is wondering if dead people can be defamed. (Aka, would Linnet's lawsuit end if she died)
Colonel Race is working for Linnet's British lawyers. They think her American lawyer, Pennington, is embezzling.
Linnet argues with her maid about a promised bonus.
Poirot notes Linnet is angering everyone.
Mia Farrow as Jackie is more effective than I expected.
Of its time: not only does the doctor have a black bag that allows him to dress Simon's bullet wound and give him morphia, the nurse, Miss Bowers, has morphia to give Jackie for hysteria.
Miss Bowers: I think a shot of morphia will meet the case. I've always found it very effective when Mrs Van Schuyler is carrying on.
Second "Belgian not French" reference.
I think the actors had fun filming the possible death scenarios. Bette Davis got to be a possible murderer! Angela Lansbury!
More "not French":
Andrew Pennington: It may be the custom in Paris to go through other people's things, but we're not in Paris now!
Hercule Poirot: Brussels, sir! The country is...
Miss Bowers on Jackie: "Nervous reaction, booze, and morphia, together they'd have sunk the Titanic."
Simon's cabin. Simon hasn't eaten his lunch. Race suggests Simon should eat, Simon says he can't. Poirot takes the tray to the table and tucks in!
"Belgian upstart, not French!"
Poirot (Peter Ustinov) and Race (David Niven) are quite the team.
From IMDb: during World War II, Major David Niven's batman (personal attendant) was Private Peter Ustinov.
More "Belgian!" references
Maggie Smith is amazing in her formal dinner jacket.

💃🏻🚢Death on the Nile thoughts and review !!!🥂🕌
Spoilers under cut !!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/0f722ae8bdfdbee763db9bd00ffe1f05/ac34234cbafc2632-4f/s540x810/ba2856fe26acae1be30e1918d9fbd09ca5d93f05.jpg)
After literal years of waiting, hearing that teeny teaser at the end of Murder on the Orient Express- I have finally got to watch Kenneth Branagh’s Death on the Nile!!!!!!!
Death on the Nile is my joint favourite Agatha Christie book (along with Five Little Pigs), and I adore Suchet’s version soooo much, I’ve rewatched it so many times. Not a fan of Ustinov but that’s just my personal taste. I love murder lovers Jackie and Simon (the fact Simon was last played by JJ Felid and now Armie….. the downgrade) and the ending scene is one of my favourites in not even just any Poirot, but of all movies (and why I started listening to Al Bowly) So this new adaptation had a lot to hold up to !!!
Overall, I did really enjoy it! The cinematography was beautiful and the acting was really good too!! I loved the scene with Poirot and his little biscuits!!!! “Leave my little friend alone.” Baby boy baby.
Van Schuyler and Bowers being together made me really happy!!! Lesbians, lesbians, lesbians!!!!!!! Little old lady lesbians!!!! It was a very nice and fitting addition. But I did Not like how Poirot outed them in front of Bouc? And how … aggressive he was being.
Emma Mckay was really good as Jackie. I didn’t think I would like anyone who wasn’t Emma Griffiths Malin as Jackie but I loved Emma Mckay just as much!!!!! She played her so well.
The merging of Pennington with Allerton and Mr Ferguson with Dr Bessner was interesting. As was how they were all in Egypt for the Doyle’s wedding party and all knowing each other rather than just coincidentally going on the same cruise. And of course the addition of Bouc and his mother being apart of that. I’m not sure why Branagh kept Bouc in when Colonel Race was right there…. or the reason to kill him off that wasn’t just to make Poirot more edgy and sad.
The mustache lore…. I hated. Hated. Poirot has a funky mustache. That is it. We don’t need a traumatic reason Mr. Branagh…. not to mention him SHAVING IT AT THE END. I loved Rosie’s little Poirot roast, but I resent that he admitted it was true? Like yes, Poirot is all those things. He is egotistical and a little freak but I don’t think he would ever admit to that. And I really don’t like that Poirot is the little freak that he is, because of the moustache trauma, because of the weird love interest back story. “I was normal before :)) I was gonna be a farmer :)) No, Poirot is just a little weirdo. An egotistical little freak penguin man. That is why I love him. He doesn’t need a reason to be so!!! The weird edgy trauma porn for him was weird as heck and I wish Branagh had left that out, but, artistic liberty, his vision and all I suppose.
So yes, overall I did enjoy the movie! Beautiful cinematography, great actors and lovely music! It was a good adaptation of the original story, and though I did not enjoy it nearly as much as it or the 2004 version, they will always be there for me to reread and rewatch !! I’m very excited to see what else Branagh does in creating the AGATHA CHRISTIE CINEMATIC UNIVERSE!!!!! I’ve seen him mentioning making a Miss Marple film, and that I would love. But he better not make her young or anything!
#dotn#dotn spoilers#wanna 🥺🥺 acc give my thoughts on agatha christie it is always on me brain but i always keep to myself#not anymore !!! gonna use this blog 🥰🥰🥰🥰

Rosalie’s whole vibe in the Suchet adaptation of Death on the Nile is sapphic af in a way I can’t easily articulate but I am 100% here for it.

Same goes for Miss Bowers in the Unistov version. If all adaptations from here on out don’t have at least one character that exudes Big Dyke Energy I’m going to be absolutely gutted.

Guess what, I found out by pure chance that the version of Death on the Nile with Peter Ustinov is on BBC iPlayer and I just watched it! I only saw it once, years ago, in my home country and dubbed, so this was the first time I watched it in original English. I didn’t realise it was so good, now I’m not surprised people often cite it as their favourite, even though it’s David Suchet who is the favourite Poirot. The production is just beautiful and the cast is great. They also reduced the number of characters and it works out well. The banter between Mrs Van Schuyler and Miss Bowers is priceless (they’re a couple, right?) and I like that they made more use of Colonel Race. Also, the Rosalie and Ferguson pairing, they don’t get together in the book, I like them here and they look so gorgeous together. I want nothing but love for Rosalie. Simon Doyle, though, has a stupid haircut. Sorry but I can’t get over it. (I mean, generally, I don’t get his character, I don’t see what is so great about him that 2 women like Jackie and Linnet fight over him, he’s not all that...)

Photo
Death on the Nile (1978) - Bette Davis as Mrs. Van Schuyler and Maggie Smith as Miss Bowers wearing complementary or matching outfits.
In the first picture, Davis is wearing a golden beaded evening dress with white opera gloves and plenty of jewellery, while Smith is wearing a black tuxedo; in the second picture, both are wearing ivory outfits - Davis’ is embellished and heavily accessorised, while Smith’s is minimal.
The costumes were designed by Anthony Powell.
