One Dress a Day Challenge
November: Oscar Winners
Death on the Nile / Angela Lansbury as Salome Otterbourne
Year: 1978
Designer: Anthony Powell
It's hard to believe Angela Lansbury didn't get an Oscar nomination for her delightfully over-the-top portrayal of the sozzled romance novelist--but at least Anthony Powell got one (and won) for her delightfully over-the-top costumes. This is the outfit in which we first meet Salome, and it really tells us all we need to know about her: she's flamboyant, eccentric, and fond of lavish detail. This is her idea of an evening dress.

Literature illuminates life only for those to whom books are a necessity. Books are unconvertible assets, to be passed on only to those who possess them already.

Olga “Oggie” Lynn (1882-1961), born Lowenthal, was a singer and singing teacher, who, despite being somewhat older than most of the Bright Young Things, was a staple of their circle. She was “short,” “dumpy,” and “jolly,” and would often host tableuax vivants for charity or sing at parties with “a rather sweet, pure little voice” when she wasn't giving lessons. She “was inclined to get into situations with which she could not cope and was always being helped by her friends,” chief among them Oliver Messel.
For a time, she lived together with Gladys Cooper, Lady Idina Sackville, and Tallulah Bankhead. According to Chips Channon, she and Tallulah Bankhead were “the queens of London's wickedest world — la haute lesbie [coterie of smart lesbians].” Her girlfriend, Maud “the Admiral” Nelson (1904-1969), though “unable to type,” was secretary first to Napier, Lord Alington, and then Cecil Beaton. It is undoubtedly Maud Nelson to whom Anthony Powell refers when he describes the mixed make-up of the parties of the age:
At one end of the scale there'd be quite smart people, Diana Cooperish sort of figures and so on. At the other there'd always be a lot of these girls who were sort of living on the margin — you know, they'd do a little modeling; at the same time they were not quite tarts but they were being half kept. And then it would tail off into the queer, almost criminal world — lesbians dressed as admirals, that sort of thing. (emphasis mine, qtd. in Taylor, Bright Young People)
As a Christmas present, in 1933, Baba and Cecil Beaton gifted Olga Lynn a scrapbook filled with signed photographs of their friends, giving us a glimpse of her social circle. It included Lady Idina Sackville; Violet, Duchess of Rutland; Gertrude Lawrence; Lady Diana Cooper; Napier, Lord Alington; Sir Michael Duff; Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie; and Viola Tree.

Anthony Powell: A Dance to the Music of Time
We are delighted to discover this morning that, in addition to being the Winter Solstice, December 21 was the birthday of British author Anthony Powell (1905-2000). I first learned of this author through my late father-in-law (whose own birthday was Christmas, come to think of it), who had met him at some cultural event during his time as a congressman, and managed to befriend him. In the early…

For context, with the first suit I had about 20-something references and it was about, pass #16. As much as I like that one, it looks like it fit awkwardly and it wasn’t giving “bug” the way I wanted it to. So I went back to basics and cut down references.
This outfit is inspired by Thierry Mugler’s Spring 1997 and Spring 2022 collections, as well as Anthony Powell’s designs for 101 Dalmatians (1996) and Joelle Jone’s Catwoman (2018)

‘[On the necessity to, when reviewing a known friend’s work’, slip in at least one adverse remark.] This might be compared to Arab artists and craftsmen of deliberately introducing an imperfection into their work so that they should not be thought to be trying to put themselves on a level with God. Alternatively, it could be seen as the bit you put in to show that you and the other fellow were not buggering each other.’
— Kingsley Amis, from The Memoirs; this can be found at the end of the chapter on Anthony Powell.

One Dress a Day Challenge
Evil Under the Sun / Maggie Smith as Daphne Castle
For an evening party that's she's hosting at her hotel on a Greek island, Mrs. Castle wears this fun bejeweled jacket over a horizontally striped blouse and vertically striped skirt. It's accompanied by a necklace, bracelet, and flower pin.
Anthony Powell designed the costumes for this movie. According to Wikipedia, other noted costume designer Sandy Powell is his cousin!

I really adore the casually prioritized importance of friendships in the new Twisters movie. Like obviously there were sparks of romance that i thoroughly enjoyed but the point is that that was never the point. The way that Javi and Kate took care of each other and looked out for each other even when they were fighting. The way the whole tornado wranglers crew acted like family and welcomed Kate right in. The way Tyler was genuinely interested in getting to know Kate and working together with her. There was no big fight between Javi and Tyler over Kate or anybody else. Kate spent the whole movie processing a lot of trauma and was able to be supported by the friends surrounding her instead of having all of her interactions stopped up with an intense budding romance. I just really love it when friendship and people are the most important things.
