Despite not being very vocal about it, he has always admired your talent as an inventor. Wise praises you often for your talent and spends alot of time just watching you work in peace. He finds it very interesting, especially when you're working on your little Bangboo, that he secretly adores so much. Whenever he has an issue with the HDD system, he gladly asks you for advice or help. It's his way of showing you his appreciation, especially as he respects your opinion very much.

He, however, is very wary of you venturing out into your missions, especially as he knew of your tendency to be rather careless. This makes him often stick around as a support just in case things get out of control, but even then, the unexpected can and does happen with your luck.

Thankfully, for you, though, Wise is very calm and collected, as he navigates the system to your rescue. He has already made several backup plans in case things go wrong, so retrieving your broken down Bangboo is not the hardest thing to him. He does express his worry by softly lecturing you as well, although he has a hard time even slightly being mad at you. He'll simply warn you to be careful next time before he helps you repair your Bangboo.

I have a lil summary for it here (A benefit of an old film class even if I plan to either write it like a novel or make it a graphic novel once I dont suffer doing backgrounds....as much)

A duchess to be, discontented with her duty to marry her betrothed. Getting off on the wrong foot with her betrothed she meets a mystery man at a masquerade ball and slowly becomes closer to both trying to unravel who they really are and her feelings to decide if she’ll follow her heart or her responsibilities before it's too late.

The project leans into history for 1700's europe (specifically france but with ties to england and italy as well for history and aesthetics) along with heavy flower motifs, formal prose and COLOR is a big thing! :D (.....boy doesn't this sound familiar Ahem....Pink ....niche special interests, themes and motifs will be used again and again)

But the main character is a hybrid moth/butterfly Marquise Montella Noelle Dubois from the Marigold kingdom

(These are....very old drawings but you get an idea from them....) Montella is based on a Monarch butterfly and a white satin moth, her wings are very muted during the day but glow in the pattern of a monarchs at night or in dim/dark settings ^-^

Her kingdom is themed after marigolds, old england(mixed with france), and orange, gold and white colors. She also has a few additional monikers she goes by (tho its very blatanly stated its still her....unlike with others under pseudonyms :3)

....while she's the main character I don't have much to say about her (the side characters take the show at times, she just TECHNICALLY moves the plot along with her sappy attempts at romance and diplomatics with her betrothed) but she's meant to be very sweet (if oblivious....) character ^-^

And while I sadly don't have drawings for them I want to mention Montella's parents (who are barely seen but....I love the Earl he's a joy)

Duchess Genevieve Madeleine Dubois, a satin moth and main ruler of the Marigold kingdom (YES its equally ruled by both her and her husband, but she has the higher status and thus is mentioned first) She's a very posh lady, formal and polite, not the most outwardly affectionate (unlike her husband) (I imagine she's very fluffy and keeps her fluff kept silky smooth and neat at all times)

and Earl Montgomery Emmet Dubois a very exuberant (and frankly obnoxious) monarch butterfly, he's loud and jovial and very different from his wife XD (He's wonderful even if he's not seen much, I actually have a chunk of a draft for the first....chapterish of the script for the project if you'd want to see that, it's rough and from like....2 years ago but you get a better feel for the Montella, her parents, Anton and his courtship partner Whilemena :3)

Moving on! We of course have (possibly your favorite) Anton Alfred McKnight the golden ant and personal guard to Montella (who often escapes him much to his nerves dismay) who is sent off to the Cornflower kingdom with her!

And his courtship partner Wilhemena Hayden Elffire who is a sweet little firefly gal, she's a tad forgetful but makes up for it in spirit! She's Montella's personal maid/handmaiden in the Marigold kingdom (she unfortunately was NOT sent with as the Cornflower kingdom has someone to assist Montella while she stayed there) but her and Anton are a sweet lil background couple (She's strong enough to bowl over Anton it's hilarious to see.)

Moving on to the Cornflower kingdom! With main themes being old england/italy, Cornflowers, and the colors black, blue and silver!

We have Montella's betrothed! Marqui Dominic Azure D'Angeli He is a hybrid of a Black rustic moth and a Blue morpho butterfly. He has plain black wings like his father.

Duke Valentine Cosimo D’Angeli. Dominics father, a black rustic moth. A very diplomatic and courteous moth.

Lady Verity Bernadette D’Angeli. A blue morpho butterfly, she is very passive, she's sweet but a touch meek (she was once but a commoner)

Count Atticus Victor Dior. A blue morpho butterfly, and Dominic's elder half brother from Lady Verity's past marriage. (He is also a very big jerk, high and mighty yet never to be next in line because HE IS A JERK (that's literally the only reason, he wasn't chosen because he's a jerk XD)) He's very antagonistic to Montella

Lady Jezebel Ernestine Bellarosa, a frequent companion to Atticus. She's a blue wasp and from a seperate kingdom originally but moved here in her youth (I FORGET ITS NAME BUT ITS PURPLE THEMED) she's initially rather antagonistic as well (Atticus is a TERRIBLE influence...) but she warms up to Montella's kindness (and may not be as straight as she thought she was-)

MOVING ON! We have the mysterious mystery mothman (or he LOOKS like a moth....who's to say :3) that is Sir Azure with his glowing blue wings and ever present mask, a quick companion to Montella, of course SOME people know who he is, but he's a mystery to Montella and supposed to be to the reader (I do love me some mystery after all :3)

Pierre Armand Du’Bleu the head royal guard! And the beloved blue mantis man, cool and collected and unnervingly never seems to blink, only stare passively, constantly. And the one to constantly get on Ant's nerves <3

(I like this better then the ref dood of him so this one it is! :3)

Mrs. Lavinia Estelle Bazil, personaly maid/handmaiden of Montella while she stays in the cornflower kingdom. A blue bumblebee! She's quite the hardworker and always to the point (She also has a partner, but they are only ever mentioned to be a green scarab and a carpenter :3)

AND last but not leastttttttt Horatio André Clément (beloved bean....) personal butler/handservant to Dominic, he's a lil blue peacock spider and is intersex! (debating giving him he/they pronouns since he originally was just he/him...or they/he TBD!!)

(This is really just a journal entry, for real. Stuff I needed to get off my chest.)

I’ve been dipping in and out of the document for chapter eighteen since the summer, overthinking endlessly, fine-tuning, rethinking, and then overthinking a little more (and of course I’m still insecure about it)

Full disclosure: I got some comments back around January that wrecked my creative productivity. They weren’t even mean or bad — if anything, they made me feel insecure about how much weight they put on their expectations of me as a writer. They were quite articulate about it.

I don’t know how to describe it other than: it felt like they were Anton Ego sauntering into my back-alley kitchen dumpster fire mind after I’d inadvertently managed to gaslight them into thinking I was worthy of some Michelin Star inspection.

I had an interesting back-and-forth with this person, who was clearly passionate about the story — only for me to wind up deleting all of it, retreating into myself, worried other people might see that exchange and also have higher expectations than I felt capable of fulfilling. I was already feeling depressed.

(I have no idea if that person even still reads the fic.)

It’s ridiculous, considering my ultimate goal is to become a published author— but being spoken to as though I was practically already there sent me running for the hills. Thankfully, I’ve had the better part of a year to unpack why that exchange affected me so deeply, and I’m feeling much, much better.

(Overcoming the overthinking has been INTENSE. But some incredible readers have given me a wild blast of motivation over the last couple of weeks, and I’m going to ride this as long as I can)

Something else I’ll just throw out there… Some people in the T/R-shipping realm started treating me differently over my T/M stuff this year, which has been a whole other thing, to say the least. Even lost a ““friend”” (and likely a few readers) over it. All while I was actively writing fic of, creating art of, and pitching fan campaign ideas about our mutual OTP.

Apparently, all you have to do is make one little suggestion that Ten might have fallen for Martha if Rose hypothetically never existed (within a well-thought-out and highly fucking nuanced meta that couldn’t have been more shippy over Tentoo and Rose) and you learn just how brutal fandom can be. I wound up creating a separate Tumblr and Ao3 just to try and avoid that sort of thing as much as I can in the future.

 That hurt me tremendously, but yeah — that’s the other thing that blew a massive hole in my motivation. I even still have friends who are different towards me now/can't even read anything I write anymore. I wouldn't say I'm over that, but it no longer affects my motivation, which is the most important thing.

My primary goal for 2025 is to learn to go easier on myself and to stop overthinking everything so I can begin finishing my fics again. How am I ever going to write and publish a book if I can't finish my fics or handle a bit of fandom-based nonsense?

I'm also ready to finish writing this fucking story, because I've been big hyped over the ending all year.

Little Black Classics Box Set, pt 1

Not "fanfic", but… I came across the "Little Black Classics Box Set" published by Penguin Random House recently, and the list of books looked great! $140 for 80 books is also fantastic, even when they're mostly novellas. A lot of it looked like stuff I wanted to read.

It was also all mostly in the public domain, too. So I figured that I could just find most of it on gutenberg or another archive, legally and for free!

@eddie-dearest I had to add your tags because that's exactly what I asked myself when I started thinking about the character. I didn't plan a backstory or characterisation, I started playing because the alternative history concept of the game seemed intriguing and I wanted to explore what it had to offer in terms of writing. I played a lot of storylines just to see how the plot would proceed and I was immediately hooked by the mystery (this was around 2013). Hiram's characterisation is mainly based on the choices I made in game, and he turned out to be quite a mess, but in a fun chaotic way.

The rest of the post is under the cut because it got a little long.

After some years I started thinking about what kind of character would have made those choices and I elaborated a first concept for an oc, but I never thought that much about it. Around 2017 I deleted my old mail, completely forgetting it was linked to my game account so I had to start everything again, which was kind of a relief given all the new game dynamics that were added to the early game, and this time I had the character ready. I got some of my friends into the game too and we made a group chat (The Paramount Polycule started as the chat name lol) and that was the starting point for headcanons and characterisation development.

I love history and the 19th century is particularly interesting to me in terms of societal changes, a hyphen between the ancient regime and the contemporary 20th century ideologies (with all the good and bad implications that this entails), and technological advances. The process of change and how people react and adapt to it is what really intrigues me, and it's what got me into the game in the first place, and what prompted the background for the character. Hiram is fascinated by change and he loves to keep up with the times, I don't think he ever felt left behind by history. If he feels there's something he can't understand he dives head first into it until he figures it out. He approaches challenges like puzzles or games and he's still capable of wonder, even after a good dose of corruption arc.

Speaking of corruption arcs, I'm a tragedy enjoyer, other than a chaotic shenanigans appreciator, and I like when the narrative borders on horror. Gothic fiction with its specific motifs is one of my favourite genres, and another reason I started playing the game. I especially appreciate the theme of a place being haunted by itself and its history and/or moving through history haunted by what it was/what it is/what it could be, so you can see why Fallen London is so compelling to me. I also like themes of faustian bargains and that's why my character is Like That.

In terms of general vibes and aesthetic I love late 19th and early 20th century fashion, and I wanted Hiram to have the look of some actor from the 20s/30s interpreting a late 19th century character as an excuse to mix up multiple decades of fashion. The devils are anachronistic and fashion in Fallen London is so interesting to speculate. Pre code Hollywood and and pre nazi european cinema have the perfect aesthetic for me, and I got particularly inspired by the drama of austrian operetta films, hence the Anton Walbrook and Ronal Colman faceclaims. On a more personal note, I just projected some gender as I always do when I design a character. I like earlier 19th century fashion too, and that's why I made him so dandyish.

Actually a story entirely without dialogue would be a kind of neat challenge, but I would ABSOLUTELY go with only dialogue instead. No idea how it would work, but I'd try anyways. I've always said I'd rather write dialogue than anything else!
