the scent of frying oil and seasonings clung to sohee's uniform, but he barely noticed it. he was too busy thinking about tomorrow. his first actual date.

he tossed a batch of chicken wings into a bowl, resisting the urge to check his phone again. not that he was expecting another text—their conversation was a few hours ago.

"dude, you’re zoning out," grumbled his coworker daewoo, elbowing him lightly. "you almost dropped a wing on the floor."

"i. did. not." sohee shot back, glaring at his younger coworker.

daewoo had a shit-eating grin on his face. "i know the face of a guy who just scored a date."

sohee wheeled back, whisper-shouting, "how'd you know that?"

the older guy let out a low whistle, genuinely impressed. "no way," he laughed good-naturedly, "i was just fucking with you."

sohee continued coating the chicken with the trademark sauce. when he was done (and finally satisfied with the way the chicken turned out), he turned to daewoo.

"you thought i didn't have it in me?"

daewoo snorted, adjusting the plastic mask covering his mouth. "there was a time, yes."

sohee groaned, putting a batch in a bucket. "thanks for the vote of confidence."

"no, no, i mean, i knew you'd find someone one day, i was just messing with you!" daewoo elbowed him in the side, nearly making sohee drop the metal tongs. "that certainly explains why you’ve been smiling at the deep fryer like it just said 'i love you' to you."

sohee tried to frown, scowl, grimace—anything—but it was hard to shake off the cheesy smile almost-permanently embedded on his face. tomorrow was going to be great.

then his phone buzzed in his pocket.

he slid it out, still half-smiling—until he saw the letters on the screen.

Mom (2) new messages

a sense of unease settled in his stomach. he unlocked his phone.

After some thinking, I've come to the conclusion that I don’t understand how you have time for dates. nonsense

We’ll discuss this the next time you come home.

the words hit like a wrecking ball. why's she so against it?

sohee sighed, locking his phone and shoving it back in his pocket. the friendly banter has turned into tense silence; the rest of the shift seemed to go by slower than before.

꩜ .ᐟ warnings: sohee's mom is mean. (THIS IS FOR THE SAKE OF THE STORY. IM NOT TRYING TO DEFAME HER OR SMTH😭)

it was past eleven when sohee stepped into his shared apartment, wiping the sweat of his forehead with the hem of his t-shirt. immediately, he heard the faint sound of seunghan snoring. he sighed in relief—he was too tired to deal with all of his antics.

today had been a long day, with the recording session, the dreaded conversation with his mother (if you could even call that a conversation), and more importantly, his shift at the fried chicken fast-food joint.

after washing up and getting ready for bed, sohee's entire body sinked down on his bed, letting the fatigue of the day seep into the mattress. a sigh of sweet relief escaped from his lips—the ache in his muscles slowly faded as he laid on his stomach, feet dangling off of his bed.

after what seemed like thirty minutes, without even thinking, he patted down his bed, searching for his phone.

i miss her already.

you and sohee sat awkwardly on a bench, a few feet away from the bus stop. sohee fidgeted with the strap of his crossbody bag while you stared at your shoes.

“thanks for meeting me,” sohee started, his voice quieter than usual. “i… i wanted to apologize for last time. for just leaving like that.”

you were stunned; you didn't expect an apology from him. "it's fine."

“no, it's not,” sohee muttered, his tone firmer now. “i shouldn’t have just run off. i was upset, but that doesn’t mean i should’ve disappeared like that. i’m sorry.”

you finally glanced at sohee, noticing the frown on his face.

“i didn’t mean to upset you,” you said. “i just thought maybe it’d be easier if we weren’t around each other so much. for… you know, all the teasing and stuff.”

“yeah, i know,” sohee answered quickly, “but it felt like you didn’t care how i felt about it. you just… decided on your own and told me.”

“i thought i was doing the right thing,” you reasoned, forcing your voice to be steady. “i didn’t want shotaro's stupid jokes to get to you.”

“he's always been like that.” sohee took a shaky breath. “it just made me feel… like i didn’t matter. like our friendship didn’t matter.”

your gaze landed on his face. your heart sank. “that’s not true,” you said softly. “you do matter. i… i didn’t know it would hurt you like that. i'm sorry.”

sohee shook his head, letting out a bitter laugh. “of course you didn’t. you don’t get it, do you?”

his voice was barely above a whisper. "i was upset because i like you.”

your mind was scrambling to understand the words that had just left his mouth.

you let out an unintelligible noise.

'i like you.'

your heart was hammering in your chest, threatening to break your ribcage.

“you like me?” you asked, voice wavering.

he finally looked at to you, his eyes searching for yours. “you're literally all i can think about. i... i like you a lot.”

your breath hitched.

you did not expect to receive a confession at 10:12 am.

your mouth felt dry.

“please say something,” he muttered, an embarrassed look on his face.

a sense of panic surged in you, twisting your stomach. “i don't know what to say.” you muttered quietly, yet the burning in your cheeks betrays you.

this didn't go unnoticed by sohee.

oh no.

“you did say in your messages that you had something to tell me…”

you rolled your eyes, facing away to hide your face. “changing the subject right after confessing, huh? you're such a coward.”

he laughed at this, nudging your shoulder.

“come on, i'm the coward now?"

"i like you too." you huffed out, still avoiding his gaze. this made him stop in his tracks.

"can you say that again? i couldn't quite catch that."

"no," you deadpanned.

he chuckled, eyes softening at your face. "fine." he laced his hand through yours, squeezing it gently. "i'll say it again."

you could melt in the spot.

"i like you," he repeated in your ear, his breath tickling the skin under your neck.

you stayed silent, face as red as a ripe tomato. "you're crazy," you whispered.

you couldn't believe this was happening.

then suddenly, a wave of realization hit you—sohee should be at the recording studio, not whispering in your ear now. "what the heck are you still doing here?" you yelped, scooting away.

sohee stopped in his tracks. "huh?" he sputtered, staring at you with wide eyes.

"you should be at the recording studio!"

despite it being well into the evening, sohee and seunghan still weren't home. the latter chatted animatedly with wonbin at the balcony, a view of seoul's skyline in front of them.

sohee, on the other hand, leaned against the wall, phone in hand. his thumb was hovering over his screen. he wasn't really paying attention to the conversation.

wonbin was the first to notice his silence. “so what's gotten into you? tired from all that singing?”

sohee laughed. albeit a bit nervously.

seunghan looked over at sohee, gaze flitting down to the way sohee's fingers twitched indecisively over the screen. “is this what i think it is?” he asked in a sing-song voice.

“hm? what?”

seunghan turned to wonbin. “he's definitely texting y/n.”

at the sound of those words, wonbin froze. “finally,” he mumbled.

“this is probably the fifteenth time he opened their chat today.” seunghan snorted.

“oh, shut up!” sohee's ears were pink as he locked his phone and tucked it inside his pocket.

“don’t ‘shut up’ me,” seunghan shot back. “just text her already. you’ve been doing this ‘should i shouldn’t i’ thing for weeks. it’s getting painful to watch.”

sohee shot him a look. “you don’t understand... it’s not that simple. we fought the other day—”

“wait,” seunghan said, blinking. “what do you mean, you fought?”

sohee sighed. “it's… a long story. i won't get into details, but we had a, uh—disagreement.”

“whose fault was it?”

“mine,” sohee muttered almost immediately.

wonbin rolled his eyes. “all you have to do is apologize then.”

sohee gave him a look. “what if she doesn't forgive me?”

“look,” wonbin leaned forward with a knowing smile. “there's a good chance she will. i mean, it seems like she likes you. and even if she doesn't, she organized this day for you. she's obviously fond of you either way."

seunghan patted his shoulder. “she'll forgive you. just say sorry and hear her out.”

wonbin snorted at the look on sohee's face “it’s obvious, dude. she talks a lot about your music. and you.”

seunghan nodded sagely. “especially you. don’t get me started on the way she talks about you. the rare times it was just the two of us at the apartment, she was like, ‘sohee’s so talented,’ ‘oh my gosh, seunghan, did you hear his song?’ it’s never-ending.”

sohee's breath hitched. “i'm sure she doesn't say that,” he muttered, but his voice had lost its strength.

“she does,” wonbin and seunghan said in unison, their expressions full of smugness.

seunghan crossed his arms. “look. you’re overthinking it. just tell her how you feel.”
