i honestly don’t know who is more of a loser when it comes to sam and dean. like they’re both so pathetic and nerdy it’s really funny. we have sam as a theater kid, obsessed with serial killers and being all smart, reading a lot of books and knowing like all the history and niche stuff of the world. while dean is into larf, knows every rock band and history of all of their albums, songs and context, likes cowboy wayyy too much and can recite all movies lines and references and watches Anime. men aren’t they just So geek. my fav loser brothers

How many of these movies referenced by Dean Winchester, film nerd, have you seen?
I built this list on this other list I found and then spent way too much time adjusting the titles. (Like, the man made My Neighbor Totoro and Scream references and they weren't on the list.) It includes aliases used, quotes, references, etc. I made some executive decisions on what to include which I'm assuming no one wants to hear about. The list is long af, but it covers all 15 seasons.

watched
wordplay - rewatched this documentary about crosswords and particularly about the annual crossword tournament put on by will shortz while waiting for the anesthesia from my wisdom tooth extraction to wear off and found it about as charming as i remembered... i love a doc about a subculture made up of endearing nerds. i first saw it when it came out and on revisit it also has some intensely 2004 vibes - in particular jon stewart shows up as one of their crossword-fans talking heads and it really brought home for me how influential he was on the development of internet tone (like to this day the reason so many people on reddit sound Like That is because they're trying to be jon stewart and failing...)
the bourne ultimatum - movie go zoom zoom! still not convinced matt damon can act
artists and models - i had never seen a dean martin/jerry lewis film before and i don't really want to again but i'm glad i saw this one (this is how i feel about the two (2) wes anderson movies i've seen, and also pulp fiction & tarantino). some great colors & costumes, a plot that goes surprisingly bonkers in a final third turn that reminds you it was the cold war (between that and all the stuff about comics & violence this one also functions as a real time capsule), and (my main reason for watching) shirley maclaine the love of my life is so adorable and funny as a daffy sweetheart in a role that really lets her (a former dancer) show off her gift for physical comedy.
the secret garden - the cast in this movie is so good, including the children in the starring roles, and while it doesn't even attempt to do anything with the book's deranged relationship with things like the british empire and the concept of disability, watching it really did bring me back to why the book has been so beloved - the fantasy at its heart is ultimately about hard humble work paying off and about friends teaching each other to be nicer, which are i think deeply appealing narratives for children in a way that people sometimes forget. it's so funny that part of what cures mary and colin of their bad personalities is meeting another unhappy rich child for the very first time!
humanist vampire seeking consenting suicidal person - this was slight but sweet, a darkly funny romcom with some style and heart. also i had never seen a french-canadian movie before i don't think and it was a fun surprise to hear them talking like "frenchfrenchfrenchfrenchRRRRfrenchfrenchRRRR." not an accent with which i have much familiarity!
jurassic park - my somewhat inexplicable, even to me, aversion to raiders of the lost ark had me avoiding action spielberg for basically my whole life but i gave this a shot thinking maybe i would appreciate it if not enjoy it and was absolutely GLUED to the screen from about five minutes in. i understand why other directors are like that about spielberg now, and also what jj abrams is trying to do all the time and failing because he doesn't understand how it actually works. this is like the most famous movie in the world basically and i've seen so many clips from it over the years and yet even waiting for them and expecting them to come i was ON THE EDGE OF MY SEAT! like WOW! truly a movie that feels like a theme park ride more than any other i've seen except maybe fury road. anyway as you statistically speaking probably already know this movie absolutely rocks, and not just for (1) laura dern and (2) jeff goldblum with his tits out.
citizen kane - spent the last weekend in june at two different marches & closed it out sunday night with a screening of the movie that made me bisexual <3 one day i'll figure out a way to articulate how this movie did what it did to me but for now i will just say that it is great and its reputation is deserved and orson welles is one of the most entertaining screen presences of all time and it looks so cool and beautiful all the way through and it is so so so so gay
interview with a vampire season 2 - my opinion on this is at this point well established lol finally some good fucking food!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
read
megan abbott, the turnout - this & the zadie smith book are further steps in me catching up with authors i lost track of during some bad reading years! when i heard that megan abbott was coming out with a book about sisters who run a ballet school i was like LOL because that's like the peak ultimate megan abbott premise (girls and the nastiness of both feelings and bodies and ambition and hunger and an atmosphere of nightmares and filth and the insane dynamics of a tightly knit but deeply dysfunctional world, all to the nth power), and guess what as a megan abbott fan i loved it :) all the bad reviews on goodreads for this are like "why is this book so gross? why is she sexualizing the nutracker? there were scenes in this book that made me feel dirty reading them. way too much focus on the wet leotard crotches of little girls" and i was sickos dot jpg the whole time. but actually i think the reason that this wound up being my favorite abbott since dare me is that at its core it's a book about a woman with an unbelievably fucked up childhood due to her incredibly fucked up dead parents and the suspense that gives the book its tension and its form is less about what's going to happen with the plot and more about whether she is at any point going to put it together that the things that happened to her when she was young were actually bad; the further the book goes, the more deeply you understand the walls of denial and distortion around her entire life. it rules.
david j. skaal, something in the blood: the untold story of bram stoker, the man who wrote dracula - as previously mentioned, i have some real qualms with some of his dracula readings, but overall i found this an addictively pleasurable tome - 600 pages and he kept them turning the whole time. i love a biography that starts off with some background on medieval ireland, you know? skaal is a good writer with an engaging but learned style, and the book is clearly both exhaustively researched and intended for popular audiences (albeit popular audiences who have definitely read dracula, but, i mean, who else is reading 600 pages about this guy?); reading it often feels something like having a drink with a professor who knows his stuff and is NOT afraid to gossip. dracula qualms aside i may investigate some of his other books, particularly his book on dracula screen adaptations, since i'm curious about those but don't necessarily want to, like, watch most of them, lol
bonnie jo campbell, the waters - book club book that was objectively certainly not terrible and which had some things i did like or appreciate, like an 11 year old girl obsessed with math (representation matters...) but which i found just about the most boring thing i have read in my life. like i would definitely say campbell is a better writer than, say, taylor jenkins reid (to name another book club book) or whatsherface who wrote the book of fried green tomatoes which we also read las year... but i found those books much more aggravating but also easier to get through than this book, which really requires you to have some level investment in, like, the natural world of rural michigan, but mostly made me feel so glad i don't live in a small town where all the men have guns.
zadie smith, swing time - it's funny because when i started this i was spending a lot of time thinking about how maybe plot and structure have become underrated, but then this was like a very long book written in the style of someone just kind of talking at you about their life, with plot events technically happening but never feeling like the driving force of the book, and i was totally riveted, which was a good reminder that you can get away with anything if you're a genius! smith is just such a keen observer of people and how they operate, and so allergic to relying on any kind of obvious assumptions about the relationships between demographics & personality or beliefs, even as demographic realities are such a key part of the fabric of the book... i was a little worried i would be disappointed by the fact that she abandoned the modernist-leaning experimentation of NW for a more straightforward, even chatty, style, but "you can get away with it if you're a genius" applies to that too. this book is also an absolute masterclass in the universal through the specific - i cannot emphasize how much literally not one thing the protagonist experiences has ever happened to me, how much our lives and backgrounds and personalities overlap not at all, and yet constantly i found myself aching with resonance over things like "it's so true that's what it's like when you have a mom" or "that really is what it feels like when you are young and sort of smart but also sort of stupid" (which if i were to define it briefly is i think more or less what the book is about).
listened
charli xcx, brat - i remain after all these years a true romance truther and continue unfairly to measure all her subsequent work, much of which is frankly too sophisticated and experimental for my listening taste even if i recognize she's Doing Something, but this album sounds great and has some bops. as a straight-through listen it was too rich for my blood, but i find myself enjoying the songs on shuffle mixed in with whatever else i've been into more than i would have expected from that first exposure, and also 360 has been stuck in my head more waking hours than not for like a month and a half now and i'm still not sick of it (although i think my favorite song on the album is 365, and not just because i think it's really funny that she ended the album with "the opening track coming out of the bathroom after doing cocaine"). plus as someone who HAS been listening to charli since whenever the video for "you're the one" dropped it is nice to see The Culture finally rally around her even if i remain a little puzzled over why now, the all-star remixes getting rolled out have been pretty delightful (LORDE!!!!!!!!), and it's nice to have the zeitgeist coalesce for a moment over something i too think is fun (especially since the other thing gay people love this summer is chappell roan on whom i have yet to be converted sorry to everyone i'm sincerely glad you're having a good time)

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My name is Wybie, and this page is going to be very miscellaneous.
As a basic overview of me, I'm 18 years old, queer (she/he) and I really like plants! I have ADHD and a number of other blogs, so this one might be very erratically updated, which I apologize for in advance. I call pretty much everyone love, doll, and/or dear, so if that makes you uncomfortable, please please please let me know so I don't upset or harm you in any way. I also (attempt to) flirt quite a lot, so, again, tell me if that makes you uncomfortable.
If you couldn't tell, I really love Coraline. That and Across the Spider-Verse are my favorite films. I love psychological films and psychology in general, so if you have any recommendations of movies that will fuck up my head, please let me know!
Some things that might be featured on this blog~
。°✩ Music I Like~ this can range from hard rock to K-pop to 2020 music from POVs to David Bowie (I adore Bowie). My favorite groups are Måneskin, Black Veil Brides, and Pierce the Veil (I'm quite new to this one, though, so please don't hate one me for whatever people hate on people for). My favorite solo artists are Dean Lewis, Vana, Melanie Martinez, Ashnikko, Hozier, and others. I'm sorry ToT I'm bad at picking favorites!! The music tag will be #wybiesmusic. ✧˖°
。°✩ Poetry~ while I won't say I stand up against the greats, I'm not a horrid poet and am interested in sharing it. I'll also be reblogging other poetry, because the poets of tumblr are wonderful and deserve the recognition. The reblog tag will be #wybiepoetryreblog and my poetry will be #wybiespoetry. ✧˖°
。°✩ Art~ again, I'm no Monet, but I'm not the worst artist on this site. I'll likely be sharing here, as I can't share on any other platform and if my art can make someone smile or feel something, I've accomplished my goal. Of course, I'll reblog other people's art, too, especially fanart of my favorite things. The reblog tag will be #wybieartreblog and my art will be #wybiesart. ✧˖°
。°✩ Religion~ you might even find the occasional religious or spiritual post from me, as I'm pagan and have a lot of (apparently strange) spiritual beliefs. I'm primarily Hellenic, however I do follow Loki and, while I don't follow every god, I do believe in every god, even the Christian one (I don't like him, though. Jesus is cool.) I'd like a bit more into astrology and the like, so if anyone knows any resources for that, please let me know! The tags will be #wybiespaganismreblogs and #wybiespaganism. ✧˖°
。°✩ Mental Health~ I have undiagnosed (but I fit damn near every parameter for) ADHD, autism, and anxiety, and I also have an eating disorder. Every post about food will have a "tw food" tag, and every ED post will have a "tw ed" tag as well because I know they can be harmful. I struggle a lot with executive dysfunction, mental spirals, social anxiety, and intrusive thoughts, and I figure that if I share my own experiences, I can help others and they can help me! The tag will, of course, be #wybiesmentalhealth, as well as ADHD, autism, and anxiety tags. ✧˖°
。°✩ Fandom Nonsense~ I'm a bit of a dork, so I'll be posting a lot of little nerd things. This primarily will include Harry Potter (and Marauders), MCU, Criminal Minds, Percy Jackson Universe, ACOTAR, Miraculous Ladybug, and others. I've recently decided I want to start getting into anime and have watched a bit of Spy X Family, so if anyone has any recommendations, I only really have Netflix, Hulu, and I definitely don't use pirating sites because those aren't safe and they're harmful to the economy. The tags will be #wybiesfandomnonsense. ✧˖°
Basic DNI! Zionists, antisemitics, Islamophobes, radical conservatives, homophobes, transphobes, zoophiles, anti therian or furry, racists, misogynistic, science or Holocaust deniers, religious bigots, racial bigots, classists, generally cruel or bigoted individuals, people who will attempt to convert me or send me nudes, or overall dickfaces.
There is not an MDNI, but minors, please don't try to DM me without prior consent; I have no filter and don't feel like doin' time. Ageless blogs as well, unless specifically marked as adult.

and the second i started reading you screamed to me…
sam winchester!
cozy
“hey sammy.”
sam jolted awake at the sound of your voice, “shit, didn’t mean to scare you.” you laughed before sitting down in the chair infront of him, “no! you didn’t, you’re fine.” you couldn’t help but notice the slight drool on his cheek and the papers strewn about.
“how about we take a break from all the research for a bit and we can go on a jog?” he sighed before rubbing his eyes, “we need to keep researching y/n.” you shook your head, “hey, as much as i love just sitting with you, i need to make sure you don’t die on my watch sam. you look like hell.”
“like he’d know anything about it.”
the door swung open to the motel room as dean returned with coffee and donuts. he chuckled to himself whilst putting down the items on the table, minding the research. “not funny.” sam spoke whilst you giggled, “i mean, it kinda is.”
“see sammy? even curls here agrees with me, seems like you’re losing your touch.”
“my touch? i’m not touching anything?”
“yeah but i bet you’d like to, i sure as hell would.” you rolled your eyes before bumping dean with your shoulder, “you never take a break huh?” dean smiled with a mouthful of powdered donuts, “never.”
you stood up from the table, announcing your departure, “i’m going to go change, and when i’m back we are going on a jog. fill up my waterbottle please.” sam nodded as he moved to pick your bottle up from the nightstand by your guys’ bed.
you’d entered the bathroom whilst dean and sam were outside. “so,” sam furrowed his eyebrows, “what is it?” dean uncrossed his legs and turned towards sam, placing his feet on the floor. “you and curley over there. she likes you sam.”
he let out a scoff as he filled up your bottle, “no she doesn’t dean, quit it.” the older winchester groaned before walking to the taller of the pair, “you have got to be blind if you don’t see it sammy. she cares about you, all the time. you two nerds are always sitting together, talking about some random poet or case. she asks you to fill her bottle and you do. you fall asleep and you wake up with a blanket on your shoulders. you think i’m the one making sure you’re cozy?”
sam didn’t notice the bottle overflowing until dean turned the tap off.
before he could reply, you walked out into the room, hair up, running shoes on and in his jumper. “you ready?” sam had made the wise decision of choosing track pants the night before, “yeah, let’s go.” he didn’t miss deans grin as you opened the door, “wait i’ll get my bottle—,”
“just share from mine, no worries.” your smile was as bright as usual, and as your dark eyes landed on him, sam couldn’t help but wonder.
maybe you do like him, since he certainly likes you.

my official tbosas thoughts. WARNING spoilers ahead and double warning, i am all over the place
FIRST i wanna say that their attention to detail is truly like!!! the beginning scene where the man is cannibalizing (? i believe that’s what i saw, OR it was the dog, it was so dark that i missed it) and young tigris was talking about the things people do when they’re desperate. it made me think about how the capitol is SO traumatized from the dark days that they’re still storing food in the capitol, 65 years later. which is talked about in mockingjay while the squad is storming the capitol.
ANYWAY, i think it’s really interesting that they cut the film into three parts, because that’s how the books have always been done. but it was a weird change considering that hunger games, catching fire and both mockingjays did not have that black screen with the section title. nonetheless, it didn’t bother me.
the way that they set up the scene for them being inside the house w the cockroach was pretty perfect. all i could think about was the cabbage soup in the book. but they did the food aspect by showing off the fridge and it having no food in it.
i think tigris was pretty perfect, i wouldn’t have changed a single thing if i’m being honest.
umumum I don’t remember dean highbottom having an addiction in the book? and i’m the hunger games nerd in my family so it was weird not being able to answer the question on what he was taking (i know it’s revealed at the end but still) because i don’t remember it being mentioned. in fairness, i haven’t read tbosas in YEARS.
i think they missed the true sinister possibility with gaul. because the whole paper scene and clemensia getting bit, resulted in her getting scaly. i kept waiting for her to pop up (and for coriolanus to visit her) because it would show that gaul was more of an evil character that what she already presented as.
as for dear old lucy gray, i hated the accent. i hated every minute of the accent. and the faces that rachel made when she sang were… odd to say the least. speaking of singing, it was even weirder to see the capitol to have such an emotional reaction each time she did. bc it was literally every scene.
they truly managed to secure the fucking awkward aspect of her singing on the reaping stage. cause grabbing the microphone was nailed.
tributes were exactly like i had imagined them to be, i wouldn’t have changed anything there. i totally forgot that the whole sponsor drone thing was fucked up until that first gift was sent and it almost killed somebody. because they’re made to target the tribute and won’t stop.
also that one tribute escaping out of the arena when it was blown up? absolutely beautiful. that’s another detail. as well as arachne getting stabbed in the throat bc she was teasing her tribute with food. i wasn’t sure if they’d show that.
hmm, beyond that i don’t really have any thoughts. it ended the exact way it had in the books, more or less. i don’t think they skipped a single scene??? besides coriolanus properly meeting lucy gray’s family at their house, i think.
and we didn’t really get a good introduction to the covey, something i don’t mind.
all in all, definitely my favorite film now.
EDIT: i’ve had some time to think about the movie/book.
listen, i’m not mad by any of the changes. like i said, they covered a lot of what happened in the book.
what they never mentioned: the three C’s. chaos, control and contain(?) i believe. i would’ve liked to see that implemented more with gaul while she was making her point on what the hunger games are about.
also, the DRONES! another thing i was waiting for (after i remember that the drones targeted the tribute they were designated for) was the tribute (teslee) literally hacking them and using them as a weapon against other tributes.
that’s all i have for now!

Day 20: Spa Day
“Specialty of clerics, druids and paladins, in Dungeons & Dragons,” Cas reads out loud, squinting at the paper laid flat against the kitchen table. He looks up at Dean, who shrugs.
“Metatron didn’t include DnD in your pop culture download?” Dean asks sympathetically.
Cas shakes head.
“Well, DnD is probably more counter culture if you want to get technical about it,” Sam says as he ferociously attacks the salad with a pair of tongs. Pieces of lettuce spray across the counter, and Sam sheepishly puts them back in the bowl, one by one.
“Nerd,” Dean coughs into his fist as he gives the pasta water a few hearty shakes of salt.
“Says the man who hung up his LARPing sword above his bed,” Sam retorts.
Dean points a wooden mixing spoon at him. “Gotta be ready for anything.”
"Seriously?"
"Did you forget I also sleep with a gun under my pillow?"
Cas shakes his head ruefully. "Your actions would make any gun safety advocate weep."
Dean grins. "Haven't shot myself yet."
Cas shoots him a flat look. "That's not nearly as reassuring as you think it is."
"You just don't know how to live, Cas." He turns back to the bubbling pasta pot.
"The word you’re looking for is MAGIC," Sam says helpfully.
"Thank you," Cas says as he writes down the correct answer. "Pastry dough used in crullers and beignets, five letters."
Sam shrugs.
Dean spins around, eyebrows raised at the pair of them. "Really?"
Both give him blank stares in return.
"I've made you watch the Great British Bake Off five times!" As Cas frowns, no doubt sorting through his millennia of memories for Pastry Week, Dean says, "It's a choux pastry, babe."
Cas dutifully copies it down. "Did you know in French, petit choux is an outdated term of endearment?" At Dean's perplexed face, he adds, "Petit means small."
Dean rubs his chin. "Little dough ball? I guess that's cute. If you're talking about a baby or something, like a real round one." He helpfully mimes the correct shape with his hands.
"I believe it refers to choux as in a cabbage," Cas says.
"Why the hell would you bring cabbage into it?” Dean makes a face. “Fucking frog eaters."
"Cabbage is a very versatile vegetable," Sam points out.
"You, shut up." Dean pours in three boxes of pasta into the boiling water. "Cabbage isn't versatile. It's gross."
Sam sets down his completed salad and takes a seat across from Cas at the kitchen table.
"It's a staple in a wide variety of cuisines," Cas disagrees.
"You're dead to me too."
Cas rolls his eyes and turns back to the crossword. Even though the answer comes to him in less than a second, he says aloud, "Quadrupedal combat vehicle in Star Wars films."
Dean perks up. "How many letters?"
"AT-ATs," Sam says as Dean glares.
"I was just about to say that!"
Sam ignores him. "There are some clues that pop up all the time," Sam tells Cas. "Like AT-ATs, arena, Erie, Argo, Eden."
"Words with a high percentage of vowels," Cas surmises.
"Yup." Sam cranes his neck, tilting his head to read Cas's puzzle upside down. "What's the theme?"
Cas points to the first long row of blank boxes. "Classic Wilson Pickett cover [1966].”
"Mustang Sally!" Dean sings into his wooden spoon, "now baby, guess you better slow your mustang down, oh yeah!"
Cas sits up straighter. "That song was in Miss Congeniality."
Dean groans as Sam's face turns half delighted, half incredulous. "You made him watch Miss Congeniality?"
Dean shakes his head. "It must've been part of Meta-"
Cas says at the same time, "You were hunting a siren with Eileen."
Sam doubles over laughing.
"What's the next clue, cabbage man?" Dean demands loudly.
Dutifully, Cas recites, "Top 10 funk hit from War with an iconic bass line [1975]."
Sam's brow creases. "Low Rider?"
Cas tilts his head, the description pinging his memory. "Like my car?"
Over the sound of pasta hitting the strainer, Dean chuckles. "Yeah, just like the pimpmobile."
Sam reads the next one, "Tracy Chapman hit with the line ‘I had a feeling I could be someone’ [1988]."
"Fast Car," Dean grunts as he throws the mostly water-free pasta back in the pot.
Cas dutifully jots down the answer before asking, "Janis Joplin’s final recording, which had an anticonsumerism message [1970]."
“Janis Joplin?” Dean repeats as he overturns the simmering alfredo sauce on top of the fettuccine.
Sam plucks a tomato out of the salad. “It’s Mercedes Benz,” he says, reaching over to count out the letters.
“The unifying clue for theme is Modern Music Staple that’s a punny description of 17– , 24–, 38 – and 48 – Across.”
“You got any letters?”
“A U _ O _ U N E”
“It’s Autotune,” Sam says, grinning. “Get it? Since all the answers are car songs?”
“Wordplay,” Cas sighs, wrinkling his nose.
“You’ll get better,” Sam says bracingly as he reaches over to pat Cast on the arm. “That’s why you’re doing the crosswords, right?”
“What’s left?” Dean asks.
“Close Chica.”
“Amiga,” Sam says confidently. “I haven’t forgotten all my middle school Spanish.”
Dean sets the steaming bowl of pasta on the table. “Whatever you say, hombre.” He takes the dish towel slung over his shoulder and throws it in the direction of the butcher block table. “Put that away, Cas. Let’s eat!”
“I’m almost done,” Cas protests as Dean ladles out servings for everyone. “Outings devoted to relaxation and self care, seven letters.”
“Spa days,” Sam says, grabbing Dean’s plate and placing a portion of salad on the side.
“I’m gonna need a spa day after this,” Dean grumbles, “to wash all the nerdgasm juice off me.”
“You watch Jeopardy! every night, you massive hypocrite,” Sam says without looking up from his pasta.
“Alec always gets a pass.”
Cas frowns. “Just like Swayze?”
“Just like Swayze,” Dean confirms before he dumps half his salad onto Cas’s plate.

“I’ll stay here, hook up with the posse. Because you know me, I’m a posse magnet. I mean, I love posse.”
Dean is so silly 😭 I literally crack up every single time I watch this episode, especially this scene, because he’s the biggest goofball. He’s a nerd—a big film buff who makes stupid puns. I’m crying. I need to save a horse, ride a cowboy (HIM) for real 🤠

Tell your freaking father to never flirt with my former boyfriend (Crassus) again!😡

Queer Transformation in the Online Supernatural Fan-Community
The whiteboard at the front of the dusty classroom read out “PTSD” in big black letters. My class was on the mental health unit of seventh grade health, a topic which caused some to snicker but which made me and my group of newly queer, feminist, staunchly liberal friends nod in approval. The teacher, a coach with thinning hair, asked if anybody knew anything about PTSD. My friend, a fellow nerd, raised her hand and quickly went into a spiel about a book she read about the blossoming love between two male characters that was tragically cut short by one of the characters being drafted into the Vietnam War. With a start, I remembered what we had been discussing recently and with a sick jolt it hit me: my friend was talking about Supernatural fanfiction in front of our entire class.
Supernatural is an action-adventure drama series that debuted in 2005 and ran for 15 years. It follows two brothers, Dean and Sam Winchester, as they trek across the U.S.A. in search of supernatural monsters to hunt, and it later evolved into something resembling bible fanfiction as the main cast was expanded to include angels, demons, and other biblical entities. Though it was originally written to appeal to a mostly conservative, middle american, male audience, it was quickly picked up by a younger, female, queer, and internet-savvy audience that would go on to create incredibly heartfelt transformative works about queerness, homophobia, and mental health. However, the journey there is a complicated one.
In 1973, film theorist Laura Mulvey coined the term “male gaze” as a form of media creation that “portrays women as objects and nothing more”. I believe that Laura Mulvey would agree that Supernatural falls directly into the space of the male gaze. Its depictions of women relegated them to a few limiting roles, likely due to the male dominated writer’s room and intended audience. These roles included: the deceased mother, the blushing virgin, the deceased girlfriend, the hooker with a heart of gold, the evil demon, the deceased almost-girlfriend, etc etc (are we seeing a pattern here?). While there were a few standout female characters, such as the nerdy hacker lesbian Charlie or the charmingly midwestern Donna, the general rule of Supernatural was that if there was a female character, she was more likely than not going to die a brutal and sometimes sexually charged death. This writing is problematic in itself, but it gets really interesting once you factor in the fans.
Despite the fact that Supernatural had a mostly female fanbase and a solid amount of queer fans, reactions to female characters were complicated, especially in the beginning. One infamous poem from 2009 blog “Just Go Demon-Ho” lists reason why the demon love interest Ruby needed to be written off, including such inspiring lines as “Just leave now b*tch, we will stand up and cheer”. While access to the early internet allowed for fans to discuss their love of their favorite show, it also provided a breeding ground for fans to spread hatred and misogyny online. In this is the double-bladed sword: once anonymized, the internet allows for people to show their true colors, and this can often be very ugly. While people might feel the pressure to tone down such strong opinions in real life settings, people will often post without thought online under the pretense that “nobody will care anyway”, although this is not true. Perhaps there was also the perception that since these characters weren’t real, then the audience’s misogyny wasn’t hurting anybody, even if these comments could be internalized by other fans.
Such behavior makes me wonder which came first: the audience’s internalized misogyny or the show’s external misogyny. I believe that they went hand in hand. Hegemony is defined by sociologist James Lull as “the power or dominance that one social group holds over others” (Gender, Race, and Class in Media 6th Edition, Page 41). As opposed to other forms of oppression, hegemony functions by convincing one social group that they are not being oppressed, and that their oppression is actually a result of nature or how things should be. In a way, since the female characters of Supernatural were not portrayed as actual human beings, the audience could not perceive any new female character as such, unless they were firmly out of the range of “potential love interest”. Fan perception of female characters was so harmed by this internet echo chamber of misogyny that it was very difficult to break out of the hegemony of “girl=bad, man=good”. Paradoxically, there was still a desire for these fans to see Dean and Sam in complex romantic relationships, but in the words of writer Anna Campbell from Medium, “...in general it’s hard to write a compelling heterosexual romance, after all, if all your women are objects more than agents.” Enter Castiel, angel of the Lord.
Season 4 of Supernatural begins with Dean being raised from hell by the angel Castiel, who declares that “God commanded it”. Castiel then showed up repeatedly throughout the season, eventually becoming part of the main cast. Fans went wild. Here was a male character with an interesting backstory and relationship with one of the main characters, unlike previous love interests that were only caricatures of real women. It is doubtless that the fanbases’ misogyny also played a part in the popularity of a gay relationship, but the result is fascinating. In internet fan communities, a practice known as “shipping” is common, where fans take two characters that they think would look good together and create fanworks about them being in a relationship. This can manifest as simply blogging about them, or in transformative works (defined as “A new work based on an old one work [the new work] is transformative if it uses the source work in completely new or unexpected ways”) like art, fanfiction, and videos. And on the internet, gay relationships reign supreme.
When someone unaware of online fan-culture is exposed to this fact, it can be confusing. But when all of the factors are considered, it really is not that surprising. From its inception, the internet has been a place where people can find groups of people with similar ideals as them that they might not find in real life. For many queer people, especially queer teenagers, the internet was where they first learned about LGBTQ+ identities and communities. Combine this with the fact that a lot of mainstream media is made with the male gaze and many female characters fall flat, and you get a female, queer community online that is simultaneously displeased with the disappointments of heterosexual pairings and the lack of queer representation in mainstream media. When more attention in films and tv shows is given to complex, fulfilling male relationships than is given to heterosexual pairings, then why wouldn’t people want to explore what is given to them?
Queer readings of mainstream texts allow for the audience to glean more from the narrative, coming away with their own rich interpretations. As queer studies scholar Alexander Doty writes, “Queer readings aren’t alternative’ readings. They result from the recognition and articulation of the complex range of queerness that has been in popular culture texts and their audiences all along.” By creating fanworks that investigate certain untapped aspects of characters (such as the popular interpretation that Dean Winchester is bisexual due to his innuendos, posturing, repression, and overcompensating masculinity), fans explore these aspects within themselves. Transformative fiction is not just “stealing” the ideas of the published work, but instead ways of furthering one’s understanding of it. The internet is a place where creators do not have to concern themselves with the pressures of a corporation worried about profitability, which often pushes media to fall into the male gaze. Rather, individuals can create works through the female gaze, which Laura Mulvey writes as, “Characters viewed through the lens of the female gaze are not caricatures. The beauty of the female gaze is that it aims to empathize rather than objectify, to show emotion and intimacy while also showing respect. This is a refreshing idea compared to the control, dominance, and superficialities of the male gaze.” Fanfiction, though often derided by popular culture, is a statement of rebellion.
And now we return to seventh grade health class, with the warm afternoon sun shining through the window onto the face of my friend. I am mildly mortified that she is speaking about Supernatural fanfiction (disguised as it may be) in front of our entire class. I wonder to myself: How could someone relate something as serious as PTSD to a show so terrible and misogynistic as Supernatural, and then proudly declare it? Well, I would never. Meanwhile, she is thinking about her favorite show, about how much it means to her despite its flaws. She is thinking about how she and other fans have taken something that is often discriminatory to the very people they are, and how despite what others may think, they’ve transformed it into something that embraces queerness, neurodivergence, and mental health. Gay transformative works can be liberating to the queer community, but it must be acknowledged that the abundance of male/male romances are largely in response to a lack of properly written female characters. People can make lemonade out of lemons, but that doesn’t stop the fact that corporations are squeezing lemon juice into our eyes. Still, in a world where the powers that be dictate the reign of toxic masculinity, it is the rebellious joy of the creative fan to see that and then transform it into any of the beautifully diverse narratives it asks to become.
