I've been playing dragon age the vailguard, here 2 of my rooks! :]

Unfortunately, something happened and the save files have been lost :[ which sucks because I had just gotten past the fist part of the game in both files.

I may when I'm feeling up to it remake them, as I wanted to romance all the male characters. (Because I'm a gay loser.)

But I do really enjoy the game, I was worried I'd be lost not having played the previous games, but they do a good job on catching up new players without to much hand fed explaining, I love mechanics and the characters are so cool and interesting!

I also absolutely love the attention to detail in this game, the different dialogs you get depending on your class and race is so cool and of course I will always love when games include diversity! :] It made me happy to hear my rooks talk about their journeys, some of the things they said hit home for me, again I haven't gotten super far in the game, but Varric's shaving mirror and and the conversation you have with Tash made me feel so seen.

I really don’t think Veilguard played enough with the inter-faction relationship dynamics between Rook and companions.

My favourite fantasy RPG of all time is Wrath of the righteous. And though it doesn’t have as clear cut a background system, it does tag your character with unique dialogue opportunities similar to Veilguard. But whereas most of these opportunities in a romance sense get played out in Veilguard exclusively between Rook and a partner of the same faction, WotR does some insane amounts of in lore connections that I love between you and characters of different factions.

Example, one of my fav playhrorughs was playing a character Romancing Sosiel, a paladin of Shelyn, Chaotic Good goddess of beauty and the arts. I’m a Veilguard style logic, you’d think the most interesting way to play that would be to make a fellow worshipper of Shelyn. Which would be valid. Sure. But playing a devout member of the cult of Zon-Kuthon, the lawful evil twin brother to Shelyn, who is bound by cosmic law to a pact to ort r his sister that results in his worshippers often defending the devout of Shelyn despite their rivalry, and whom Shelyn orders her people to attempt to redeem out of hopes that there’s still good left in her brother? Oh that gets REAL juicy.

Or another example. Lann, the demon blood having Neather whose ancestors worship a betrayed and martyred crusading Angel. You could play an Angel path character and or aasimar heritage character for the delicious conflict of his admiration for Angels between his disgust with his own demonic origins resulting in angst. Or, hilariously, you could pick Lamashtu, the mother of monsters as your goddess, and let him know how hopelessly hot and attractive you find his monstrous features at every opportunity, which a real confidence booster cause him crushing on a feMC is almost inevitable if you’re nice in his direction.

Mostly, I’m saying this, because the opportunities for Crow Rooks dating Emmerich or Mournwatch Rooks dating Lucanis could have been DELICIOUS with literary conventions. But alas.

everyone talks like lof rook got kicked out of the lords but Isabela's letter to them in the beginning is like "the authorities want to arrest you and FUCK them so we're gonna do the funniest thing imaginable and send you with varric. see you later! XOXO isabela"

I'm starting to wonder if it's just a game between the two of them to be like "oh yeah, rook? totally kicked out lmao not a lord anymore! ... are the cops gone? anyway kid here's an invite to the hall of valor in case you want to beat something up for fun again."

as i prepare myself (mentally) to replay da2 i think about Isabela and Rook's relationship and how there's so little of it it makes me want to throw up (and how i imagine their relationship to be)

with Rook's background of being a Tevinter galley slave (i think this happens regardless of race which. Okay) Isabela could so easily see Fenris here. even in da2 she has a banter with him about freeing slaves:

Fenris: "So you freed a group of slaves?"

Isabela: "Would-be slaves. They weren't slaves yet"

Fenris: "Still, you did a brave thing. Many would turn a blind eye"

Isabela: "Don't read too much into it, alright? It just... seemed like a good idea at the time"

so this part is totally in character. she may joke about a lot of things, but she believes everyone should be free, as do mages, who are met with disgust by so many people in Kirkwall. so imagine her freeing our Rook and taking them in to give them a better life, so they wouldn't end up like Fenris did: angry, full of prejudices and uncontrollable rage

it would be odd for her to want to have kids, considering what her mother was to her and how quickly she gave Isabela away, but it would be interesting to delve into that side of her, especially if she's in a relationship with Hawke. if Teia and Viago get to have that dynamic, why can't she? with the way they bantered with each other after Rook and Taash come back for the first time, it's very subtly implied that she taught them everything they know

and with the way the Lords are, it's no wonder Rook's personality would be shaped by them: Isa is a cocky swashbuckler, and she'd hate to have that rob off on them, but it does. they're both so awful at feelings and emotions, so Isabela wouldn't be able to outward say how she wanted to protect them from harm by Politics, and they wouldn't be able to admit how they want to be back and how they miss being with the Lords

and during the finale i really wanted Isabela and Rook to have some closure. it felt like they separated on a sour mood, and with so much happening in the final battle i would have loved seeing Isabela giving Rook some affection because, in a way, they're her apprentice, her special little guy, and she worries for them even if she really hates to do that. maybe she even promises to get Rook back into the Lords (why they were expelled in the first place is always a mystery to me but whateverrr)

i almost wish the Lords weren't an official faction but a pirate crew or something, a trader's post, a guild, but they have so little content i don't even know what they are, fully. and who cares at this point i say we headcanon the shit out of them

​so far Im enjoying the gameplay but the narrative style seems to be too optimistic and idk what i feel about it. I mean it feels safe and comforting and somehow even sterile. idk I used to play DA for strong emotions, not comfort

But the game as a whole is nice to play anyways

Wait, hold up - if you get Davrin with you during Harding’s quest to meet Stalgard they have an exchange in dwarven, something like this:

“An tunsha halt partha, vedur."

“Anas tu, salroka.”

Does anyone know what it means? And why isn’t it brought up again in game??? I imagine Davrin answers something along the lines of ‘Same to you/ Likewise, my friend.’ But I wonder what the first greeting means.

Lucanis being short is a big win for my Rook. My Rook is a very short male elf (from Tevinter). Slider all the way down. Together, they are a short power couple. Finally a game where that's allowed!

Still insane that they made Lucanis, a dark handsome man with a raspy voice and an Antivan accent, be short. And made him look hard and stoic when, in fact, he's a ""softie"" (as soft as a Crow can be) with a romantic and domestic side. And also gets excited about being offered a gift. This man is so fucking precious without losing his appealing edge. Not to mention Spite.

Why is everyone on tumblr being so optimistic for this game I feel like the only hater on my dash tonight 😭😭 all the YouTube comments are negative so at least I know I'm not crazy. Like what was that cheesey ass unrecognisable voice acting??? I genuinely couldn't tell if they had replaced varrics voice actor at times or not. It felt so contriiivvvvveeedddd. Maybe they were harkening back to DA2 days but the fact they've given us so many companions and only two companions can follow at a time like ??? Frrrrr?? It also looked like a grey scale blur at times. I just.... I was hoping they'd go in a more DA:O direction but also I had 0 expectations due to EAs horrific history
