It really takes going back to play origins to remember how viscerally the mages were hated in southern thedas before inquisition. Like jowan's mother started calling him an abomination the second he even showed signs of magic and then left him at the village chantry alone. They were lobotomizing children against their will!!!
#like holy shit anders was so correct!!!!#'why not just kill us as infants'#origins#dragon age#deagon age origins

Due to it being the height of this meme era I specifically said "Hello. It's him." like butchering Adele.
In my defense! I thought you knew at first! Everything about Avrian was about painful irony! His life is destroyed by the mirror, his wife studies them. The whole refusing to let people go think was about how he was gonna not let Morrigan walk out of his life! And I thought, for some reason! That you knew! THAT HE WOULD IRONICALLY AND PAINFULLY BE RIGHT!
If you're unfamiliar with Deagon Age Origins, there are random encounters as you're traveling. One is the crater that Roddy mentioned earlier. One is Zevran. And one is being attacked by a bunch of darkspawn. Which plays out the exact same for 5 out of 6 origins. The last origin, Dalish Elf, one of the darkspawn is yeah, your childhood best friend from the beginning that the game gives you every chance to deny died.
So yes. I knew the whole playthrough Tamlen was alive. It was about an hour in that I realized Roddy didn't. And I just... chose not to say anything.
So definitely deserved.
I was rereading that old Soren-related convo, a propos of you going feral over Dragon Age again, and wondered.
Why did you call Wolf a rat bastard (affectionate)?
So when I was playing Origins for the third time, I picked the Dalish elf origin, which starts with the PC and their best friend Tamlen stumbling across a cursed, haunted mirror, which causes the PC to be made sick with the blight and Tamlen to disappear entirely. I played my character as deeply loyal and stubborn, refusing to write off Tamlen even when the other characters in the intro did, and even as the plot moved onward, I let the loss of his best friend, and refusal to believe that he could really truly be dead, be one of the defining factors of my PC.
...well, Wolf is sitting here watching me play, watching me flesh out my character, all the while waiting for me to eventually arrive at the scene where it turns out that Tamlen is still, technically, alive, deeply corrupted by the blight and begging the PC to kill him. So my PC stubbornly believing that his friend was still alive turned out true! Just, you know, horribly!
Anyway so I was going "hey what the fuck" at this revelation, and then Wolf, who again, knew the whole time, was just kinda like "hey how's it going :3" and I responded "YOU RAT-BASTARD YOU KNEW THE WHOLE TIME" and rat-bastard was for some reason the first insult that I reached for at the moment, and now it just lives in our lore as "thing you call a friend who's been waiting for you to get to a plot twist you had no idea is coming but also sort of already accidentally tripped towards it."

I'm still amazed by how this turned out. You were able to show exactly the feeling Revas feels through the story, it is so meaningful😭 and the technique! It wasn't an easy request, but the mixed of painting and more iconic style turned out beautiful.
Go commission this awesome artist, if you can! A real professional ❤
Commission for @airaly!

What if the you’re unromanced protagonist from an old dragon age game could romance you’re new DA4 protag
•The warden being afraid to hurt them and taint them and survivors guilt from the blight.
The inquisitor being so afraid of betrayal and getting hurt again by anymore of thier friends or lover they shut themself out
Hawke killing a bear and using its fur to be placed in front of a fire place as they sit like Deadpool. With a rose in their mouth and a one liner about how hey sometimes being a hero can be hard to bear but they are never in it alone. Then they tell you to open the box in front of them and Chauncey from the black emporium is in it. You ask them how they got it and they just look of into the distance and say there are some things it’s better to forget.

Do you think the Startouch elves would be the ”first elves”?
And then, do you think the other elves would have come after, by kind of looking at how the different deagons… wield the arcanums (arcana?)?
I think it's very hard to say based on currently available information, but possibly. Startouch elves are definitely depicted as beings of immense celestial power, and for all his eldritch horror, Aaravos is said to have the vast majority of his power cut off. Some of the concept art of Startouch elves looks otherworldly and divine, which could reflect the attitudes and concepts of the race's origins that the writers had, and might still have.
As a general disclaimer, I have a hard time speculating about the origins of elves and dragons and magic as a whole in canon terms, because I've done so much metaphysical worldbuilding for my own tdp fics that it's difficult to separate out. But:
I like to think that there was a primordial 'first magic' or 'deep magic', that wasn't necessarily aligned with any of the currently recognised primals, and via some process or event it was changed or split or diverged into the primal variants we know today. Any creatures who were affected by or connected to this original magic could have changed as well. The 'First Ones' might have been creatures or elves who were connected to the deep magic - and then, potentially, if the first 'primal' magic type that came into existence was Stars, those First Ones could have become Startouch elves or star dragons. Or they might have been the firstborn of the age of newly formed magic, bright and magnificent in its power. Who knows? Certainly not me. But it's fun to speculate.
#asks#tdp#tdp meta#tdp speculation#kinda spoilers for some piaj stuff I guess#but the underlying metaphysics of the origins of magic aren't hugely relevant to any major plotlines in piaj itself#the prospective sequel potentially. not so much piaj though#so in the end I decided to answer this ask#it'll give you insight into my worldbuilding but not really any actual story events

YES. This is what we need.
Something I think about a lot is how the dream the Warden had when they were trapped in the Fade could have been so much more personal.
Demons are masters of manipulation and temptation and I don’t think the Sloth demon would have just given the Warden a dream about Duncan and hoped that would work.
Cousland, waking to a beautiful morning in Highever, the troubles of the waking world nothing but a bad dream they can’t really recall. Their father and brother have returned from Ostagar, the darkspawn were easily dealt with. It’s a joyous day of festivity and celebration in Castle Cousland and everything is as it should be. But they can’t shake the feeling of grief in the pit of their stomach…
Mahariel hears the creaking of the aravels as they move through the forest. They’ve fallen asleep on their halla again, Tamlen complains about having to keep them from falling off and laughs about how they could even have fallen asleep like that. Mahariel starts to respond with their usual affectionate annoyance but stops when they look at Tamlen and can only think thank the creators he’s safe….but of course he’s safe why wouldn’t he be? They banter with their friend as their clan continues to trek through the forest but their instincts tell them that something isn’t right.
Amell and Surana have been to the fade before, they’re more guarded when it comes to demons. When the Sloth demon shows them a dream in which they’ve been freed from the circle it doesn’t take them long to realize that they’re being tricked. After all when they tried to visit their family after leaving the circle the demon kept having to keep them from doing so….Amell and Surana don’t even remember what their family looks like so the demon can’t know either.
(feel free to add the others! I’m not quite as familiar with those origins!)
