Mandatory Peter Steele tumblr post and bad astro all rolled into one! Oh hell yeah!

This is what I think: the Playgirl publication began in 1973 just as Pluto in Libra was kicking off and I see it as a gesture of balance because it was offering the public images of nude men where it was only magazines with naked chicks as in Playboy and Penthouse up until that point. However, most of the men who made Playgirl a memorable magazine were Pluto in Virgo men back in the 90s and, I believe, the most iconic and sought-after issue (expensive, too) is Peter Steele's. If you want to gauge the real value people place on objects, you have to look at eBay. I personally have never owned one nor have an interest in owning one yet I think it's hilarious that he did a photoshoot with them. He may have regretted it later, as he discovered Playgirl had male viewership, but I prefer this type of self-promotion, as opposed to the tired, talk show circle that rock bands were doing at the time. I find it brave, kitschy, funny, sexy all at the same time and, yes, much preferable that he flaunts his Body of Christ over talking with Jerry Springer for cheap shock value ANY DAY.

Before seeing his birth chart, I thought he was either a Scorpio or a Taurus (because of his big fucking chest) and then I saw that he was a Capricorn sun. It made sense because he described himself as a "creature of habit" and he hesitated to leave his day job to go on tour with Type O Negative, which, very Capricorn. But he's a Scorpio rising, after all, and his second house has a stellium and this house is ruled by Taurus.

Then, he has Uranus conjunct Midheaven and, well, you'll have to Google the cover for The Origin Of The Feces because I won't post it here. He has Lilith and the North Node in Leo, which to me means long hair and loving wild women, I guess. Mars and Venus on the same degree in 2nd house Capricorn: serious sex appeal and lust for money? Who knows? Because I'm not Conrad Moricand.

Those are the thoughts I have about him and Playgirl at the moment and why it seems to me that his appearance in that magazine is seen retrospectively as some kind of cultural reset. I think he's the reason people still refer to Playgirl on my corner of the internet and I suppose I'm out here collecting Capricorns for my mental rolodex. This is what happens when you don't want to alienate guys on main by writing about astrology and legendary sexy goths. And I promise I haven't seen *it*, okay? I haven't.

The content of Belladonna's story was radically different from any other animated feature up to that point, Japanese or otherwise, but its method of storytelling was just as radical.

It becomes apparent early on when viewing Belladonna of Sadness (Kanashimi No Beradona) that this film is quite unique. Certainly the first, and possibly the only animated film that might be classified in the pinku genre. But even though the film is supposedly animated, nothing seems to be moving at first. You instead see a series of elegantly designed still drawings depicting a harmonious wedding between a peasant couple in 14th century France, as a woman sings her narration in the soulful style of a 70s rock opera.

This is the film's only joyous scene, as moments later the new groom is pleading with the local land baron to reduce the marriage tax he can't afford. The baron instead decides to exercise his "droit de seigneur" with the bride. It is here, several minutes into the film, that full animation is finally used, in order to depict the rape of the virgin bride with metaphorical imagery much more disturbing than what a literal depiction of the same events could provide.

A sign of things to come, as this is only the first in a series of tragic events that push this woman, through desperation, into the world of witchcraft.

Belladonna of Sadness is the product of an animation studio that knew it was doomed, and it shows. Osamu Tezuka's Mushi Productions, which had been so successful producing TV series like Astroboy and Kimba in the 60s, was faltering badly in the early 70s for a variety of reasons related to the oil crisis and Japan's economy in general. But in actuality, Mushi Pro's first venture into feature animation, 1969's 1001 Nights, had been successful enough to spawn a second film in 1970, Cleopatra.

Tezuka, always a trailblazer, had decided that Mushi Pro's feature films would be made to appeal to adult audiences so as to expand the potential for animation as a film medium (whether these first two films succeeded in that regard is debatable). But even though these two features did relatively well at the Japanese box office, the economy was beginning to take a toll on Mushi Pro, and Tezuka refused to downsize. When Tezuka left the studio in 1971 to focus on manga, the remaining employees must have known they were on the road to bankruptcy.

A filmmaker has two choices in a situation like this: cut your losses and go out with a whimper, or pour all your remaining resources and effort into one final, revolutionary labor of love. The folks at Mushi Pro chose the latter option and Belladonna is the result. Predictably, the film had a dreadful theatrical run of only 10 days and Mushi Pro went bankrupt within a few months.

A sort of late 60's psychedelic Art Nouveau revivalism inspired by the likes of Aubrey Beardsley's Victorian parodies, which were likewise inspired by erotic-grotesque shunga prints, thus coming full circle back to Japan.

Belladonna is an adaptation of La Sorcière, the 1862 novelized history of satanism and witchcraft in the late middle ages. The book was written by feminist, freethinker, and Frenchman Jules Michelet, who, like many other post-revolution French intellectuals, was eager to condemn the barbaric European forces of the prior few centuries. In Michelet's story, the practice of witchcraft is not simply the leftover trace of ancient pagan traditions, but an active rebellion against an oppressive church and system of government. While the church expected serfs to suffer and slave away during their time on earth with only the promise of a better afterlife to console them, witchcraft provided a glimpse of happiness in the here and now. Where the church feared the imperfections of nature, witchcraft embraced them. Where the church could only respond to ailments with prayer and holy water, witchcraft offered painkillers and psychoactive potions from datura plants.

According to Michelet, the spirit of rebellion and experimentation found in 14th century witchcraft was a progenitor of the enlightenment values yet to come. Furthermore, this was a movement led by women, those who likely suffered the most at the hands of the church and the feudal system. He insinuates that society's emancipation from oppression is contingent on female liberation and sexual empowerment. It's easy to imagine how these ideas must have resonated with the revolutionary leftist Japanese filmmakers of more than a century later (yes, they were working in animation too).

The film adaptation of La Sorcière is often very faithful to the book, to the point of replicating much of its dialogue. It tells the story of an archetypal witch (unnamed in the book, named Jeanne in the movie) who suffers a series of misfortunes that lead her down the path from being a chaste, obedient peasant's wife, to giving in to her awakened earthly desires, to finally blossoming into the bride of Satan himself.

The process of selling one's soul to the Devil can be interpreted literally or metaphorically, but keep in mind that at least according to Michelet, those who would enter into such a pact in the middle ages presumably believed they were literally sacrificing eternity for just a glimmer of relief from a cruel and bleak life. A pact with Satan was the ultimate act of desperation, not just a casual mistake. On the other hand, none of the "powers" that Jeanne acquires from the Devil require any sort of supernatural explanation. They are simply things that Medieval society has withheld from her: an independent spirit, a liberated sexual libido, communion with nature, an inquisitiveness that allows her to discover the medicinal properties of plants, an air of confidence that enhances her powers of persuasion.

Her relationship with the Devil may be nothing but a psychological coping mechanism for the brutality she suffers.

The content of Belladonna's story was radically different from any other animated feature up to that point, Japanese or otherwise (Ralph Bakshi included), but its method of storytelling was just as radical. The film was designed by illustrator Kuni Fukai, whose drawings may appear to be more Western than Japanese.

But his style seems to be a sort of late 60's psychedelic Art Nouveau revivalism inspired by the likes of Aubrey Beardsley's Victorian parodies, which were likewise inspired by erotic-grotesque shunga prints, thus coming full circle back to Japan. Much of the film features Fukai's drawings directly, with the camera panning over still frames, but the film often transitions seamlessly into full animation thanks to animation director Gisaburo Sugii.

This extra motion tends to happen during the film's numerous sex scenes, but they are generally not visually explicit. Instead, they are animated in a variety of highly stylized expressionistic ways, taking full advantage of animation's ability to caricature form and motion. Because of the film's aesthetic appearance and radical themes, it sometimes appears to be very much a product of its time--the early 70's--which is either good or bad depending on who you ask (the biggest giveaway is its great psychedelic rock / jazz fusion soundtrack which is occasionally reminiscent of J. A. Seazer). But it's important to remember that it is based on source material from over a century before, and that there really are no other comparable movies from that period that would justify an implication that it's at all derivative.

Japanese animation was still in its prolonged adolescence in 1973 (you could argue that it still is today). It was only five years earlier that adult political and social themes had begun to make an appearance in anime with Horus, Prince of the Sun. There had not been much experimentation with form or design aside from Tezuka's own independent shorts.

It's closest-related cousin is probably Hiroshi Harada's adaptation of ero-guro manga artist Suehiro Maruo's Midori, similar both for its technique of alternating short scenes of full animation with a "slideshow" of still images, and also for its story of unrelenting cruelty. The film probably has more in common with films from the likes of Koji Wakamatsu than it does with other anime.

Granted, it certainly took longer to make and cost a bit more than a typical pinku film (though it's clearly a low-budget flick), but like many of the best films in that genre, Belladonna manages to promote some form of feminist ideology while simultaneously exploiting the entertainment value of crass misogyny.

L'anime est divisible en 7 saisons(ou 4) selon ses coupures car il y a des longues périodes de pauses:  

La première saison(Gintama) commence donc en 2006 et termine en 2010 avec 201 épisodes.

La seconde saison(Gintama') commence en 2011(donc un an après) et s'arrête en mars 2012 avec 51 épisodes. 

La troisième saison(Gintama+) commence en octobre 2012(7 mois après) et s'arrête en 2013 avec 12 épisodes. 

La 4ème saison(Gintama°) débuterait en Avril 2015 jusqu'en Mars 2016(51 épisodes) composé de petits arcs humoristiques et des deux premiers sérieux qui entament la fin du manga: l'arc du Shogun et du Shinsengumi.

La cinquième saison(Gintama.) commencerait en janvier 2017(soit 10 mois après) et s'arrêterait le 26 Mars 2017 avec 12 épisodes. Dans cette saison, cela adapte l'arc Rakuyou (ou Yato ou Ryûmyaku, bref plein de nom pour cet arc) qui mène aussi vers la fin du manga/anime, vu que c'est l'avant dernier arc du manga.

La sixième saison(Gintama Shinsaku) commence en octobre 2017(7 mois après) jusqu'en mars 2018 avec 24 épisodes. Dans cette saison, il y a deux parties: l'Arc Porori ou des oubliés(débute au 329ème épisode jusqu'au 341ème épisode) composé des arcs comiques/légers qui ont été sauté précédemment par la production. Puis la seconde partie Gintama Silver Soul(débute au 342ème épisode jusqu'au 353ème épisode) qui adapte la première partie de l'arc ultime. 

La septième saison(Gintama Silver Soul 2) est la continuité de l'arc Silver Soul, commence en juillet 2018(4 mois après) jusqu'en octobre 2018 avec 14 épisodes. Dans cette saison, c'est donc la suite de la première partie de l'arc Silver Soul et il commence aussi à adapter la seconde partie de l'arc ultime, il débute à l'arc 354 jusqu'à l'épisode 367. L'anime s'arrête à la moitié du dernier arc, le scan 686. 

En 2020, les derniers chapitres ont été adapté en deux épisodes (Gintama The Semi Final) et un film(Gintama The Final)  

Cependant, la quatrième saison(Gintama°) est, selon crunchyroll, composée de plusieurs arcs entrecoupés par des pauses.

-Tout d'abord, la première partie d'avril 2015 à mars  2016(51 épisodes) composée de divers petit arc et de l'arc du Shogun et du Shinsengumi.

-Ensuite, après 10 mois de pause, la saison reprend nommé "Gintama." avec l'arc Rakuyou ou Yato ou Ryûmyaku de janvier 2017 à mars 2017(12 épisodes).

-Ensuite, cela reprend nommé "Gintama Shinsaku" après 7 mois de pause avec l'arc des oubliés suivi(ou Porori) de l'arc de Silver Soul d'octobre 2017 à Mars 2018(24 épisodes)

-Ensuite, cela reprend nommé Gintama Silver Soul 2 après 4 mois adaptant la suite de l'arc Silver Soul, de juillet 2018 à octobre 2018.  

Mais aussi, l'anime peut être divisé en 10 saisons aussi:

Les seuls gens étant restés sur la Terre désolée sont les pauvres, les Jouishishi qui tentent d'anéantir le gouvernement, les voyous qui profitent du relâchement de la loi, et ceux qui ont obstinément refusé de fuir alors que la fin approchait. Alors qu'il erre, Gintoki rencontre deux jeunes gens. Un jeune homme à lunettes portant un sabre de bois marqué « Lac Touya », réglant son compte à une bande de voyous, puis une jeune femme portant des habits chinois aux mêmes motifs que les siens, accompagnée d'un chien gigantesque : ce sont Shinpachi et Kagura devenus adultes. Animation Night 126: Back to France

Hey everyone! Sorry we never managed to get a chance to watch the remainder of Alexander Senki. That’s still planned, hopefully sometime this weekend! Peter Chung’s later works were fascinating and varied and I look forward to writing about them at some point.

For now, though, we’re going to take a different direction! It’s been a long time since Animation Night last visited France, and in that time the French are still very busy creating some wonderful animations. So let’s cast our beady little eyes across the Channel (or Atlantic Ocean, or uh entirety of Asia, I think that covers most of the places ppl are watching from) and see what’s up!

The place of animation in various cultures is... an interesting thing imo. Whether animation is seen as for children or everyone, what sort of animated film story is prized, what sort of techniques are used - it all varies enormously across the world.

France is of course home to the renowned Gobelins animation school, and has since the late 90s pursued a trend towards making more ‘serious’, art- or drama-oriented animated films - something they’re not really alone in, in Europe. Why? I can only speculate (and such things are kind arbitrary). It might be attributed to the influence of Kirikou, or the effect of cross-pollination at the Annecy film festival, or the role of government arts funding.

In any case, the last decade or two, French animators have been really popping off. There is of course Fortiche Productions of Arcane renown, there’s Studio La Cachette, a group of Gobelins grads who went on to make Primal and Love Death and Robots, there’s Balak of Lastman and then Bobbypills productions like the delightful Peepoodo and the Super Fuck Friends. There are the autobio comics writers turned animators, like Joann Sfar (AN 114) and Marjane Satrapi (whose Persepolis we watched on AN 11, but I still owe a better writeup). And rolling back a bit we find the precise traditional animation of Sylvain Chomet (also AN 11). Along the way there’s odd little one offs springing up here and there, like J’ai Perdu mon Corps (AN 32).

So what’s new?

Let’s start with the mountain climbing movie! The Summit of the Gods (Le Sommet des Dieux) adapts a manga series by that, while not especially well known in Japan, found a big audience internationally and even helped to popularise manga in France.

So what’s it about? In 1924, George Mallory and Andrew Irvine tried to climb Everest, and vanished. This story follows a much later attempt to climb Everest: the young reporter Makoto Fukamachi who follows an enigmatic mountain climber Habu Joji who, he believes, found Mallory’s camera. Thus the film is about the character of Habu, and the reason for climbing mountains in the first place.

Everest is nowadays a place you go to exploit the Sherpas and quite possibly die, leaving a colorful corpse to act as a landmark. But it’s also figured in the world’s imagination pretty much as long as someone worked out how bloody tall the thing is. Mountain climbing fiction, with its tale of risking horrifying death for a goal that’s kind of inexplicable (stand on a tall thing), formed the impetus behind Made in Abyss, one of my favourite recent manga. There is something fascinating in watching someone pursuing a spectacular yet self-destructive goal - c.f. the nature photographer in Jordan Peele’s recent film Nope...

So, in an article on recent French animation, Matteo Watzky (drink!) talks a little bit about this film...

Even in France, Imbert isn’t a very famous or well-established director yet. However, the studio behind the movie, studio Folivari, is rising to be one of the country’s most important animation production companies. Indeed, it was created by Didier Brunner, one of the most renowned animation producers of the last decade: he was behind the French movies Kirikou, The Triplets of Belleville, and Ernest and Célestine, but also the more European production Brendan and the Secret of Kells. In 2014, just as he was going to retire, he was convinced by his two children Damien and Pauline, to supervise creating a new studio, Folivari.

However, the one common element is in the realism: the movie is entirely 2D, and except for one or two scenes where rotoscoped 3D seems to have been used, it maintains a very high level of quality. This is exceptional, as realistic 2D characters acting on such character designs would be a feat anywhere, especially in the current French landscape. This is even more impressive considering that the movie is about mountaineering, i.e., something involving complex physical activity. The animators were assisted by professional alpinists who could provide advice and reference footage to ensure that everything was consistent and believable.

But the real highlight isn’t even this. In terms of animation proper, it is the effects: some of the snowfalls and avalanches are breathtaking in the way they convey textures. More generally, it is the art direction. The movie as a whole is built around it, with impressive sceneries and carefully-planned shot compositions. While today, many animated movies are design or art direction-driven (see, for example, Wolfwalkers or, to remain in France, Calamity), the way The Summit of the Gods is directed is slightly different and is perhaps the best proof and example of anime’s influence over Patrick Imbert and his team: the storyboarding and art direction work hand in hand, at an equal level. This entails that shot compositions and editing, properly cinematographic techniques that anime has always focused on, are polished.

It sounds great - I wish I could have seen in at the cinema, honestly. But I can bring it to you now in bitcrushed re-encoded 720p over Twitch! ...why do I do this to you?

In between our two main features, I’ll be returning to a thread discussed back when we watched Mutafukaz (Animation Night 105): Studio Ankama. They’re known primarily for their Flash-based work, something which influenced Masaaki Yuasa and Eunyoung Choi during their time at the short-lived Ankama Japan to adopt the technology for use at Science Saru. And chief among those flash animated series are Wakfu and Dofus, a tie in to a pair of MMOs also titled Dofus and Wakfu, both of which take place in a 2D isometric world. And both of which seem to be still around, as far as I can tell!

The style of this is probably the thing that makes it stand out: it’s colourful and of course heavily anime-influenced in its approach to shape and line, but with the uncanny smoothness of computer inbetweening. It’s been a long time since I watched any of it, so I’m kind of curious to take another look. With 65 episodes and counting, we will definitely only be taking a sample of it.

Ankama have recently produced their first traditionally animated film, titled Princesse Dragon, but while it seems to have been released in France, I don’t seem to be able to get my hands on a copy right now.

And finally, let’s return to the court of Sylvain Chomet, with his film The Illusionist (2010) about a French magician who travels to Scotland (not to be confused with the 2006 live-action film...).

Chomet is a spectacular traditional animator. Currently 58 years old, he graduated art school in 1982, and went to London where he worked for some years in animation, primarily for adverts. In 1991 he began work on his short film The Old Lady and the Pigeons, a project which ended up taking a full five years, but made such an enormous splash that Chomet got to direct some feature-length films. The first of these, The Triplets of Belleville, (Animation Night 11) introduced the world to Chomet’s particular style of caricature and understated humour, along with technical animation to rival Disney.

In all of Chomet’s films there’s a certain sense of nostalgia, for the old media world he grew up in, and anxieties over the new capitalistic world suffocating it. Such anxieties are more explicit than ever in The Illusionist, which centres on essentially an animated version of the mime and film director Jacques Tati; it’s based on a script that Tati wrote, but never got to create.

The story focuses on an illusionist who, facing a world which is no longer interested in stage magic in comparison to other forms of entertainment, travels first to London, then finally to Scotland - impressing a girl named Alice who becomes convinced that he has real magic after all.

Chomet’s original plan was to animate the film in Edinburgh, at his newly formed studio Django Films, but soon complained about the shortage of well-trained British animators... and then found himself sacked from directing the film The Tale of Despereaux, an early-CG oddity about a food-loving rat in a medieval setting. When the film came out two years later, Chomet raised a stink, saying that Universal used his designs without credit. In the end, though, Despereaux tanked, and meanwhile Chomet’s studio - unable to find funding for what would have been a ‘Scottish Simpsons’ for the BBC - were left to focus all their efforts on The Illusionist, helped by animators in London, Dundee, Paris and South Korea.

But that’s only the beginning of the weird controversies around the film! A lot revolves around who inspired the character Alice. Tati had two daughters; there was Helga Marie-Jeanne Schiel, abandoned at birth, and the younger Sophie Tatischeff, who gave Chomet the rights to the script. In Chomet’s eyes, the film is about Tatischeff, and Schiel is not mentioned in the credits; however, in her account, the script was an attempt to reconcile with her and Chomet’s version papers over her abandonment again. This seems to have ballooned into an argument over whether the film does a disservice to Tati (even constituting a “sentimental watering-down of his art” as one colleague of Tati wrote).

Unfortunately, I don’t know the first thing about Jacques Tati, so beyond pointing to the controversy I can’t say much more than that. In any case, it promises to be beautiful, particularly in its meticulous depiction of Edinburgh.

Beyond that, I also have another little short film from Gobelins. Although it was made in 2001, this one only seems to have been released eight days ago, and it’s extremely stylish and charming, calling to mind 60s animation but decisively its own thing. We also have their crop of Annecy idents, and I believe I haven’t shown all of their 2021 films either!

La storia dell'anima parte dall’omonimo manga di Eichi Shimizu e Tomohiro Shimoguchi (Linebarrels of Iron), tuttora in corso e edito qua da noi da Star Comics, ma devia dalla trama originale e dalla seconda stagione ne segue una alternativa. 

Il fumetto si ispira alle gesta dello storico supereroe protagonista della popolare serie tokusatsu anni ‘60 di Tsuburaya Productions e ne costituisce il sequel.

🔶🔸SAND LAND

Film d'animazione tratto dall'omonimo manga one-shot, firmato dal leggendario Akira Toriyama, verrà proiettato nelle sale giapponesi dal 18 agosto.

La pellicola è diretta da Toshihisa Yokoshima e in lavorazione presso gli studi SUNRISE, ANIMA e KAMIKAZE DOUGA.

🔶🔸FLUFFY PARADISE

Inizialmente previsto per quest'anno (ma poi sappiamo il casino che è successo con certe serie), il debutto in tv della serie ispirata all’omonima avventura fantasy slice of life di Himawari, è stato spostato, con mia poca sorpresa, al 2024.

L'anime è in cantiere presso EMT Squared (Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear) e ha come regista il debuttante Jun'ichi Kitamura.
