In the TBHX wiki, the quote “I’ll use whatever dirty tactics it takes to prevail” is listed under Nice’s page, but I don’t remember hearing that line from anywhere. The wiki also didn’t list a source, so I had to hunt down where it’s from by going through the PVs posted on BiliBili. It wasn’t in any of them.
Finally, my mutual @rainibao found it in the subs of the Japanese trailer posted on Crunchyroll
That is not what he said in the original Chinese. In the Chinese trailer, he said, “No matter what dirty tricks you play, I’ll overcome them perfectly.” (translation by @rainibao)
By the way, the Crunchyroll trailer only shows half of the full Chinese trailer. Nice’s line is found at the 02:30 mark.
Anyways, I just want to point out this difference because the difference in translation shows an entirely different characterization of Nice 💀. Can anybody who knows Japanese listen to the Japanese trailer and check if the audio is exactly what the subs say? Maybe it’s just a mistranslation...
And if it is a mistranslation.... then what the fuck. I was about to use that line to analyze Nice. I nearly mischaracterized him badly...
In the translation of the jp version, it’s saying that Nice is the one doing the dirty tactics. But in the Chinese version, it’s not him at all but his enemies!
I can’t believe the wiki referred to the JP version and not the original.... It’s a wiki!!! WTF 💀 I really can’t trust anything that’s not straight from BiliBili or LH0 😔

I came up with this three-way table to help me (and now you, if you want) to rate things out of 5 stars. I was thinking of books and films when I made it, but you can probably use it for other stuff.
The idea is that you rate the thing on how much stuff you loved and how much stuff you hated, and those things weight against each other. There's only one way to get 5 stars or 1 star, so those should end up as the rarest ratings, wtih 3 stars being the most common.
'Spicy' means that the thing inspires emotion, whether positive or negative, while 'bland' means it doesn't affect you much either way.
An example of a 3-star (spicy) - for me personally - would be the Twilight series, because there's plenty of garbage in there but also some things that are like crack to me. I can't think of an example of a 3 star (bland) because by nature they don't stick in the mind.
(This also assumes giving 0 stars isn't allowed. That'd throw it out of whack...)

If this hero thing doesn't work out for Lin Ling at least he has his PowerPoint and Excel to fall back on... Currently reading this fanfic where faked-his-own-death Nice and fired-from-his-job Wreck are realizing they have zero transferable skills

The Youzi/Yang Cheng friendship is everything actually. Guy who desperately needs someone who believes in him and quasi-little brother who secretly thinks he's maybe one of coolest people in the world. And they bond over having the same blorbo

I love To Be Hero X's first arcs. Impersonating a dead guy and you become him. Impersonating an alive guy and you become him. And then it's the messy work of clawing your way out of these bodies, these identities you've stolen. I am enjoying every minute of the horrors, guys. Who are you? Are you real? Are you sure?

They're literally translating his nickname as Pomelo? Are they out of their minds?? People are going to think Xia Qing is bullying her little brother. I let my guard down after Blankster because that one was pretty good but the name crimes continue

The trust system can do wonderful and uplifting things and the trust system can do cruel and terrible things. Trust and the trust system itself is not the enemy, what the conflict centers around is the misuse and abuse of trust. So far the main angles have been:
Heroes and the hero industry - showing people whatever they want to believe is true
The public - giving and withdrawing trust based on superficial qualities; expecting too much of someone
Prediction: the trust system is not going to be burned to the ground, because it's a metaphor for real trust, and the equivalent solution is not to stop trusting altogether. The solution that's are being worked out through the show is how to handle misuse of trust, eg
how do you recover from losing someone's trust
how do you balance the costs and rewards of living up to expectations
where is the line between living up to expectations and living a lie
More to come, probably..
so far the show's been mostly from the hero perspective, not from the believer perspective. hope we get to see that angle too
#to be hero x#I live and die by the dwj rule:#good fantasy will translate a real problem into magical terms. then produce a magical solution that can be translated back into real terms

Wait wait hold on a minute though. So Yang Cheng having 0 trust value was weird, implying that most ordinary people have nonzero trust value. But most people aren't running around shooting electricity out of their fingers. So what is the truth?? Is it just that it's rare to get someone who believes you have superpowers? Actually I don't care and I don't expect coherent watertight worldbuilding because trust value is a metaphor
