Movie Review - The Wolf of Wall Street
“There’s no friends on Wall Street.”
I revisited The Wolf of Wall Street for the first time since I last saw it in theaters almost 10 years ago. All the Caligula-esque hedonism and debauchery tailor-made for a modern-day capitalist society spare us no mercy. Jordan Belfort and his cronies raise the bar for working hard and playing hard. I laughed during the most outrageous scenes. It is apparent that Jonah Hill is trying to go 200 miles an hour as Donnie Azoff. When he mocked and berated a bow-tie-wearing, naïve stockbroker by swallowing his pet goldfish whole, it had me in stitches. Oh, let’s not forget the Quaaludes episode that ends in a severely damaged Lamborghini and a choking incident that parallels a Popeye episode. I cried during scenes that hit me harder than I anticipated. In my opinion, one of the most disturbing scenes was towards the end. During a heartbreaking argument with Margot Robbie’s Naomi Lapaglia about getting a divorce, Belfort resorts to cutting up a cushion on one of his nice sofas just to retrieve a bag of cocaine. There was no hope during this moment. My jaw hit the floor during the most bizarre and shocking moments that arguably weren’t necessary to show. There is a Dante’s Inferno vibe during the house or yacht parties and celebrations at the workplace.
Of course, The Wolf of Wall Street is wildly entertaining and edited in a manner that makes its three-hour runtime feel like one hour. Most of the good ol’ boys, who watch this movie, will probably cheer and feel inspired. At the end of the day, however, this movie should make you angry. After all the fun is done, the consequences won’t magically vanish. Everyone has to face them eventually. It’s an ongoing theme that Martin Scorsese never fails to address when he wrapped up his more aggressive stories such as Raging Bull, Goodfellas, and Casino.
Unfortunately, Jordan Belfort just got a slap on the wrist for his whirlwind adventures fueled by drugs, sex, luxuries, and all the stock fraud that spoon-fed him this lifestyle in the first place. Remember, The Wolf of Wall Street is a mirror that wants you to wake up and reevaluate your motives in your chosen career, not an escape from reality that makes you feel invincible for an entire afternoon. When the final scene where Belfort is speaking at a conference abruptly ends, it’s like waking up with a hangover after a fun night out on the town. Sure, there are the crazy memories, but that searing headache will make you rethink certain choices that you made.
To quote a friend of mine, The Wolf of Wall Street is simply Scorsese making his vision of an Oliver Stone film. Belfort’s 2007 memoir is the right template for this approach.
Grade: B+

Coma is Robin Cook's first commercially successful novel, published by Signet Book in 1977.(1)Coma was preceded in 1973 by Cook's lesser known novel, Year of the Intern (also published by Signet Book).(2)
Synopsis(edit)
Susan Wheeler is an attractive, 23-year-old third-year medical student working as a trainee at Boston Memorial Hospital. Susan, along with four other students—George, Harvey, Geoffrey, and Paul—takes rounds in surgery rooms and ICUs making post-treatment notations on the health of patients. Mark Bellows, a surgery resident in the hospital, is the instructor and supervisor of this group.

The book is a journey into the inner workings of a hospital. As these students complete their three-month surgical rotation, the dilemmas and problems faced by a woman in a so-called 'man's' profession are also highlighted.
It comes to Susan's attention that two patients, Nancy Greenly and Sean Berman, mysteriously went into comas immediately after their operations. These incidents were attributed to complications due to anesthesia. Nancy Greenly became comatose when her brain did not receive sufficient oxygen during surgery. Similarly, Sean Berman, a young man in his 30s in good physical condition, underwent a scheduled knee operation. Despite the operation's success, Sean failed to regain consciousness. Medically, the odds for such occurrences are one in 100,000; however, such odds seemed resolutely higher at the Boston Memorial Hospital.

Baffled by these two patients, Susan decides to investigate the causes behind these peculiar events and of other recent coma victims. Susan discovers the oxygen line to Operating Room 8 has been tampered with to induce carbon monoxide poisoning in patients during surgery, ultimately causing brain death. At the same time Susan develops a brief, but intimate, relationship with Bellows and discusses her findings with him. After unraveling further details, and evading pursuit by a man hired to kill her, Susan is led to the Jefferson Institute.
The institute is hailed as an intensive care facility designed to cut down on heavy medical costs. Patients who are declared brain dead or 'vegetables' are referred to the institute. Here, Susan finds that patients are suspended from the ceiling by wires in rooms walled by glass, and moved from room to room with little human involvement. The 'samples' are kept alive and healthy until a call for an organ comes in. The organ of choice is removed surgically (without consent) and then sold on the black market.

'Coma' is a medical mystery/thriller by Robin Cook. It was the initial book that earned him the reputation as a successful author. It's a pretty good book. A little weird in places. And the main character has all the common sense of a doorknob. Susan is a third year medical student in Boston just starting her first day at Memorial hospital.
Howard Stark, chief of the Department of Surgery at Boston Memorial, is revealed as the main antagonist. Stark confronts Susan over her findings and then drugs her, intending to put Susan in a coma under the pretext of an appendectomy. However, Bellows manages to disable the 'oxygen' line during the operation, thereby preventing a full dose of carbon monoxide poisoning. Stark is arrested, but Susan's fate is left in doubt.
Background(edit)
Cook's first book had not sold particularly well so he studied the common ingredients of best sellers and felt that, for an unknown writer, mystery-thrillers had the best chance of success. He was particularly influenced by Jaws, Seven Days in May and the novels of Eric Ambler. His original publisher did not want it but Little Brown agreed to give him a $10,000 advance.(3)
Critical response(edit)
Coma's literary awards and acclaims include a long tenure on the New York Times best seller list (reaching its highest position 'Number 6' in the fiction category.(4) The novel was included in the Fiction category of 'The New York Times Outstanding Book of the Year' listing (the forerunner to The New York Times's current '100 Notable Books of (Year)' listing) from which the 'Best Book of the Year' is selected. The New York Times Book Review also called Coma 1977's 'number one thriller of the year'.
Adaptations(edit)
The story was made into a highly successful film, Coma by Michael Crichton in 1978.
The story was adapted again into a two-part television miniseries aired in September 2012 on A&E television network.(5)

Movie Thoughts: Bringing Out the Dead
Here are my thoughts on Bringing Out the Dead:
Bringing Out the Dead involves an unlikely collaboration. Legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese directs the eccentric, typically over-the-top Nicolas Cage in this movie about a sleepless, fed-up paramedic who must endure the continuous, demanding stress of his job. As an actor, Cage is notorious for overacting or just not hesitating to go completely insane. However, his role as Frank Pierce actually helps him to restrain his standard intensity and absorb the non-stop work as a paramedic. He bursts out into random fits of madness only when it is appropriate to behave in this manner. Whenever Frank drives his ambulance through the grimy streets of Manhattan, he hallucinates the ghosts of all the patients that died while he tried to save them. These past failings haunt him as he attempts to rescue several victims of suicide, homicide or drug overdoses. Frank tries to find peace of mind in a city that appears void of tranquility.
This supernatural drama embodies an unsettling darkness. Frank and his three different co-drivers tend to the patients’ fatal wounds and deal with the strange, psychotic episodes of a few people that they encounter regularly. His co-drivers offer more insight into tending to the patients because of their unique outlook on this job not meant for everybody. Some scenes feel like that they cave in on you, especially when Frank speeds down a street to a rock and roll soundtrack or when he helps deliver a woman’s baby. Bringing Out the Dead is ultimately a story of redemption, which is a recurring theme in some of Scorsese’s other films such as Silence and The Last Temptation of Christ. Such a unique movie went largely unnoticed in theaters back in 1999, and it deserves more recognition. In light of today’s medical circumstances, Bringing Out the Dead also made me realize there are only a handful of films that explore the relentless chaos that comes with being an EMT or a paramedic. This is why Bringing Out the Dead is worth revisiting so that other films can build upon these emergencies from this time period’s perspective.

Movie Thoughts: The Invisible Man
Here are my thoughts on The Invisible Man:
If you were to ask the average person about some of the scariest things ever, there is a good chance that he or she will bring up and talk about ghosts, monsters, hellfire, serial killers, zombies, a pandemic, natural disasters, and student loans. There's one absolutely terrifying thing that most people will not mention, and it is invisibility. You never know when the invisible man will strike or what he will do to you. Sheer terror and chaos arrive in the form of invisibility because there is no sure way to stop it. This is why some of the deaths in this film such as a train flying off the rails or Dr. Kemp's car driving off a cliff were so unnerving. Their helplessness only points to the ruthlessness behind invisibility. The Invisible Man also knew when to show and when to tell. The explanation of what is monocaine is or how the law will bring down the menacing Dr. Jack Griffin are accompanied by what should unfold accordingly in this story. The ongoing threat of this mad scientist's antics make the story strong and memorable. This film brings more energy and thrills to the classic H.G. Wells novel. Although we never see Claude Rains's Dr. Jack Griffin until the end of this spectacular horror film, I felt his presence as if he was sitting next to me and threatening me. The main takeaway from The Invisible Man is that invisibility usually ends up being an underappreciated cliche in horror films.

Play Review: Dreamgirls
When I was a sophomore at Berry College, I decided to take an Introduction to Theatre course. For extra credit, my professor told me that I could write a review of any play that I attended, so I chose to write about the play, Dreamgirls. Throughout Oct. 1 until Oct. 17, the Fox Theatre has presented a timeless, electric musical about the music industry called Dreamgirls. Chunsoo Shin, Jake Productions & Broadway Across America are the sponsors for the upbeat musical. Director, Robert Longbottom, takes the audience into the harsh realities of becoming a successful musician through three singing, dancing friends called The Dreams. After losing a talent show, an agent is impressed by their performance and decides to give them an opportunity to become stars. The entire performance is organized into just 2 acts. Act I develops the personalities of the main characters. Act II reveals the circumstances of the well-developed characters as they face the consequences and even rewards from facing betrayal or breaking the law. Once the Dreams have made it into the limelight, they learn all about the trials and hardships that come with being famous such as betrayal due to self-interest, stolen ideas or dealing with personal problems. The Dreams experience the good times and tough times of being a star as they tour with James “Thunder” Early or deal with their sneaky producer, Taylor Curtis. The mood of the characters facing conflicts with business is accompanied with songs reflecting the attitudes of several characters. James “Thunder” Early sings about having soul when he is told to sing only sad songs. Record executives sing about stepping over to the bad side. The most elegant feature of Dreamgirls is the outfits that the characters whether like the black coat and tie worn by Taylor Curtis. Out of all the clothing designs, it is the glittering, incandescent dresses of The Dreams as they emit operatic wails and croons. The entire dress is engulfed in just one color whether blue, green or any other bright, uplifting color. The setting contains no background props except for a grand piano during a few of the singing interludes in Act II. The background is five, steel-wire, rotating screens illuminated with a waterfall of cascade glittering spiraling in scattered patterns. The psychedelic backdrop truly brings a dream-like sensation to the performances of The Dreams, James “Thunder” Early and other supporting performers. Occasionally, the screens adjust into a background which goes along with the drama in the musical such as highway when the Dreams are touring across America or the billboard charts as the Dreams start to compete against each other. If there is one to word to summarize the atmosphere of Dreamgirls, it is magical. Everything is glowing from the shiny dresses to the bubbly personalities. Nothing but sensation magic is displayed to the eyes of the audience as they learn about the music industry while being mesmerized by the quality of auditory energy. There is one night only to see Dreamgirls.

Movie Thoughts - The Laundromat
The one thing that I appreciate about Steven Soderbergh is that I never know what to expect from him. He has a sense of coolness and a sense of quirkiness that mesh well together. I can sense it through all his leading characters that I have gotten to know over the years. The Laundromat goes down the same avenue as films like The Big Short and exploits how big and bad many billionaires and corporations are.
Gary Oldman and Antonio Banderas have a lot of fun taking us on a rollercoaster ride through all of the hurdles, the obfuscation, and legal ramifications of finances. Oldman plays Jürgen Mossack and Banderas plays Ramón Fonseca. They are two hotshot lawyers, located in Panama City, who teach us about insurance fraud, shells, tax evasion, tax avoidance, privacy, secrecy, and bribery. This is the madness that they witness regularly. They claim towards the end of the film that they just write contracts, not the law. It is typically a treat to watch Gary Oldman overact because he knows that he gets carried away. It is intentional. Antonio Banderas brings the right amount of confidence and intensity to his character, but, for the most part, he does not get as excited as Gary Oldman.
Such flamboyant lawyers know how to tell a compelling narrative. That's what a great lawyer is supposed to do. On the other hand, I feel like The Laundromat does more telling versus showing. There were times where I did not entirely feel the entire gravity of financial fraud's consequences. Some of the vignettes could have been better interwoven with everything that Meryl Streep's Ellen Martin endured. There were some interesting side characters that could have brought more out of Ms. Martin and our two fearless lawyers, Mossack and Fonseca. Her husband died due to a tour boat flipping over on a lake. She got cheated out of living in a nice condominium in Las Vegas. It is her versus the world as she tries to take on insurance fraud that seeps from an unchecked financial system, which aligns with what Mossack and Fonseca gleefully explain to us. Her moments of hope glimmer when she prays in a church and watches Barack Obama talk about the ongoing problem of people getting away with either tax evasion or tax avoidance on the news. At the very end, Meryl Streep mockingly imitates the Statue of Liberty by wrapping a towel around her body and holding a hairbrush up in the air. Then, she cries for reform in the financial world.
Overall, The Laundromat is an engaging movie that gets too excited sometimes while introducing essential subplots. There is a lot to unpack in this crash course about the law and finances. The most devout Soderbergh fans should still have fun while watching The Laundromat.

Movie Review: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is exactly what I expected it to be. It’s a retro field trip back to 1969, which was full of paranoia, volatility, and psychedelia. 1969 was the year of easy riders, aging cowboys, and psycho killers. Whether you adore him for his unabashed energy or detest him for his excess and obsession with using homages, you got to at least acknowledge that Quentin Tarantino is always diligent and precise with showcasing and preserving every detail in the shot whenever he leaves his mark on a particular time period. He flawlessly extracted every ounce of nostalgia possible from such a significant year in the history of cinema in order to display a fantasy that should resonate with many movie lovers. Songs by Paul Revere & the Raiders, Deep Purple, and Vanilla Fudge kept swimming around inside of my head after some of the most electrifying and even carefree scenes. The finale made the two and a half hours worth the wait, and it also reminded me that I was a watching a Tarantino movie. Footage of the fictionalized B-movies spliced with noticeable references to films such as The Great Escape, Valley of the Dolls, and The Wrecking Crew made me reflect more on the cultural significance of some of the definitive films of 1969. Movies like The Wild Bunch, Z, Kes, Midnight Cowboy, Easy Rider, They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?, Medium Cool, and Army of Shadows all entertained and challenged a generation that witnessed a drastic shift in America’s cultural landscape right in the middle of the 20th century. That’s what good movies are supposed to do, and that’s why they stand the test of time. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood passes through this bygone era with earnestness and a longing for more adventure amidst change in the film industry. Overall, this is the most fun that I have had at a movie theater so far this year.
