Occasionally i reread damaged goods just to feel something and every time i do i rediscover the absolute chokehold these two panels in particularly have on me

Like. you can see how devastated roy is. grant’s immediate regret. and LIAN. OUGH.

Lian’s first response it to make sure he’s safe and i just. cant breathe.

Also the fact that you can tell it’s his first time being truly vulnerable about his family is SO UFKEOFNDNSKSKDND

Like we all know he’s objectively *not good* at bottling up his emotions so the fact that its implied he hasn’t really spokento anyone about it before, and that roy is the first person he opens up to just shows how much he genuinely trusts him and it makes me FUCKING SOB EVERY TIME

the first time i read it, it was like 3am and i was actually ugly crying bc of the sheer despair and emotion throughout the entire thing

and while i hate to praise devin grayson FUCK that entire story was incredible and changed the way i saw roy a lot

WHO IS DAMAGE?

damage, aka grant emerson, was created by bill kaplan, tom joyner, and bill marimon and first appeared in his self-titled 1994 series. he has been part of two incarnations of the titans, as well as the justice society of america. he is related to al pratt, the first atom; due to his unique heritage and genetics, grant possesses metahuman abilities that allow him to absorb and build up energy which he can use in various ways - most famously exploding like a bomb (hence the name).

this is a catalogue of every single one of grant's comic appearances, organised chronologically and categorised by what i would consider 'essential' damage reading. grant is one of my favourite characters in dc, so hopefully this can help anyone who's interested in getting to know him!

Finished Zero Hour.

That was the cheapest, stupidest way to get rid of the Team Titans they possibly could have thought up, and it didn’t even explain anything. Just have your villain go, “Yeah, lol, this plot was stupid right? So stupid. It’s over now, don’t worry. They’re gone.”

And then you keep Mirage?!?!?

As controversial as it was, I think the Parallax thing was pretty well executed? Like, Hal didn’t turn evil, he just turned into one of those “the ends justify the means, and my ends are saving literally every life that ever was or could be, so any means are acceptable!” villains. That’s one of the best ways you can do a fallen hero heel-turn, and they made it very believable with everything he’s gone through recently. Maybe if I was keeping up with him between Death & Return of Superman and this arc, it would’ve felt more jarring, but… I dunno, it worked for me. I’m glad we got the full emotional spectrum out of it, but I don’t think the eventual “actually, he was possessed” retcon was needed.

Somebody please give my boy Grant a hug, he’s had his powers for less than 48hrs, his parents fucking died this morning, people were yelling & accusing him of being a villain right up to 5min before he got snatched out of the timeline, and now he’s watching his heroes die in front of him.

Nobody even says, “Hey, good job kid,” to him afterwards! They just all ignore him and move on with things, which yes, I get that they all have a lot on their plates, but there is a teenage boy who just saved all your asses and was clearly upset during the actual fight, and it would probably do him a world of good to have, say, Superman pat him on the shoulder and say, “Thanks.” Does anyone want to give 2 seconds of positive attention to the literal child? No? Okay…

Motivations:

Tara Markov (Terra)

One of the biggest victims of misogyny in DC. She has so much potential as a character that is rarely utilized and I think DC could do with more of her. She loves her brother and he loves her. She has so much trauma that could be better explored with nuance if DC was better.

Grant Emerson (Damage)

I love him so much, he makes me cry.
