Something, something ... parallels. When I was 10yo and watching DBZ for the first time, when it was first aired in Germany, this was my favourite scene in the entirety of DBZ, and it still is to this day:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When the people of Earth all give their energy for the final genkidama that's supposed to finish off Buu.
Linking the German version so you can experience the original soundtrack (I'm sorry, the US dub soundtrack (and the Kai soundtrack for the Buu Saga) can NOT measure up the glory of the original one, and I'm so grateful the German dub kept it):
youtube
I was (and am to this day) utterly in love with this particular track, so much that I simply needed to have it with me, at all times.
And here's how I got it in ye olden days before Youtube (well, before I had internet access and knew about YT to MP3 converting lmao):
I had this particular episode taped on VHS (I'm That Old)
I took my phone (Nokia that had the luxury of a COLOR display) and recorded the track. You could literally hear the people cheer on the recording
I put this recording on my phone and listened to it
Yes the quality was crappy. I didn't care
Now, I have it on my MP3 player lol. Still randomly listen to it sometimes <3
So, the things about DBZ that were the most formative to me are: this scene, and Vegeta (who started my love for reformed villains and redemption arcs).
Ok, this has nothing to do with the point I'm trying to make, I just needed to clarify just how emotionally invested I am here.
Now, two decades later, Super gives me this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Moro Arc, DBS chapter 61
Do y'all understand what this did to me?! Do you even have the slightest idea what I am going through here?
They probably thought nothing of it, but back in the Buu Saga it was Vegeta who came up with the genkidama plan: to take the energy of everyone on Earth, and other planets too, to defeat an enemy too strong for any single person to handle.
Vegeta, the guy who's perpetually allergic to ask for help.
Now, it's Vegeta who does the opposite, and yet, the same: he takes energy that was stolen, and returns it to where it belongs, literally giving people their lives back in some cases. (The symbolism of the Namekians being the ones revived by him is CRAZY.)
And the imagery is so similar? I just. ??!?!?!?! HOW AM I TO DEAL.
ALSO:
DB ch. 515 & 516:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Goku receiving the energy from Earth, perfecting the genkidama, and he throws it.
And now:
Super, ch. 66:
Tumblr media
That's the god ki Uub sent, and Vegeta is the one to throw it to Goku to give him the power he needs to end Moro.
And that power literally comes from the reincarnation of the very being they destroyed last time? OH WOW.
(Initially I wasn't so sure what to think about this particular point but hey, the D in Dragon Ball stands for Deus Ex Machina, so ... whatever.)
I'm like. Did they do this on purpose? Is this coincidence?
How am I supposed to be normal about any of this?
Also funny how Buu Saga was the whackiest in DBZ while Moro Saga in DBS is a goddamn fucking masterpiece.

Best DBZ Fights #5
Tumblr media
Goku, Vegeta, Mr. Satan & Mr. Buu vs. Kid Buu
Manga: Chapters 315 - 322, Volume 26 Anime: Episodes 279 - 286 (Kai: 158 - 164)
The final battle in Dragon Ball Z transpires on the World of the Kais. Kid Buu is a force of pure, chaotic evil, and so it's only fitting that the battle against him be just as chaotic, with fighters on the heroes' side switching in and out while wishes are being granted on the Namekian Dragon Balls and then energy needs to be gathered from the newly restored population of Earth for a Spirit Bomb, with Mr. Satan of all people coming in to save the day on multiple fronts (causing Mr. Buu to be restored, getting the people of Earth to lend their energy to the Spirit Bomb, and rescuing an unconscious Vegeta when he's caught in the Spirit Bomb's path.) It keeps you guessing even to the end, when Kid Buu actually begins pushing the Spirit Bomb back, and it taking the by-that-point forgotten final wish on the Namekian Dragon Balls to restore Goku's strength and have him overcome Kid Buu's power and finish him off once and for all. The only downsides are that Kid Buu is kind of a bland fighter and I would have much preferred Gohan been in Goku's place with the Spirit Bomb.

I'm in the middle of reading Luffa's fight with Goku, and this question occurred to me. If you were asked how strong, fast, durable Luffa is, or how many planets she could destroy, what would you say? I know most authors don't think too much about that sorta thing, but I like hearing what they have to say about it nevertheless.
I wouldn't exactly call this a hypothetical situation, as people have asked me about Luffa's power level before. I've always been somewhat vague about it, because I was trying to save my answers for the Luffa/Goku fight that you're currently reading. (Thanks for reading it, by the way.)
My short answer is to reefer to this handy profile sheet I commissioned from the ever-talented Fraulein Pflaume some years ago. Let's just take a quick look and:
Tumblr media
I don't know if you can read that text on the right, but it says "Power Level: Maximum". It's a glib answer, but I created the character as a response to Broly hype, so it seems appropriate.
Now that the Luffa/Goku fight chapters are finally published, if someone asked me about it, I'd direct them to that part of the fic. Because that's the first time you really see Luffa fighting at full power against a canon DBZ character in an even match. And maybe it shouldn't have taken 200+ chapters to get to that point, but look at where we've been...
The first 141 chapters are all set centuries before the events of Dragon Ball. There's no frame of reference because everyone is just a character I made up.
Chapters 142-187 feature a Luffa weakened by some unexplained trauma. Maybe it's "jet lag" from being pulled into the future, or the strain of using the Golden Oozaru form, but she's not at 100%, which is why she's struggling against Nappa one day and then holding her own against Buu the next.
Chapters 188-211 feature Luffa more or less back at her full strength, but it doesn't matter because her opponents' powers aren't well-defined. Beerus clears everybody. Demigra and Xeno Trunks are official characters in the franchise, but they've had so few battles that they're in the same boat as all of my own OCs.
In all of this, the only useful point of reference is Goku, who joins the fight against Demigra in Xenoverse 1. He's from a period of time between Battle of Gods and Res F, so we have a decent idea what we're dealing with here. And my goal from the beginning was to set up that Luffa/Goku fight and have them be evenly matched, so that's where Luffa tops out.
That's how I interpret power levels in the Dragon Ball universe. If I make up a new guy, and I want to figure out how powerful they are, I would try to figure out which arc or movie they could be in and stay relevant. I think everyone is accustomed to this idea. I feel like we all agree that Z-Broly vs. Bojack would be a pretty even match because Bojack's movie is sandwiched between two Z-Broly films. And they both lost to Cell-Games-Era Z-Fighters, so it's reasonable to say Perfect Cell is somewhere in that ballpark too.
Shoot, I forgot that Goku even did this himself when he took stock of Dabura's powers in the Buu Saga. The Supreme Kai was terrified at the prospect of fighting Dabura, but Goku explained that he was about the same as Cell, whom they fought against seven years earlier.
Tumblr media
This is a much more natural way of addressing power scaling. Later, when Buu shows up, he sweeps Dabura, Gohan, and Vegeta like they're nothing, and that pretty much tells you exactly how high the stakes are. We don't need a scouter to understand Buu's strength and speed. Vegeta hit him with a lot of big power moves and Buu either shrugged it off, regenerated his injuries, or said that it hurt... a little.
I don't understand "How many planets?" as a measure of power. I mean, superficially, it's a cool question. "How many planets can your OC blow up?" That sounds badass, but what are we talking about, exactly? Like Frieza only destroyed two planets in canon. Three if you want to count Earth in Res F. But I'm pretty sure he could destroy a lot more if he had reason to. I don't think destroying more planets than someone else is a measure of power. It just means one of you had more planets you were mad at.
Unless we're talking like... in a row? I'm imagining Luffa lining up a shot like billiard balls. I guess that would be a greater feat of power, but it seems pretty wasteful. I know Cell threatened that his big Kamehameha at the end of the Cell Games could take out the entire solar system, but he never actually got to prove it, so I don't take that very seriously. It's kind of pointless to have characters slinging around that kind of power when they need planets to stand on for their fights.
I guess what I'm saying here is that I do think about this sort of thing a lot, but mainly because this particular character requires it. Luffa's role here is to be analogous to Goku, Vegeta, or Broly, so I have to constantly compare her to those kinds of characters. It's one thing to just have a Saiyan OC who happens to be able to go Super Saiyan. You can make them ridiculously OP, or just have them be kind of low-tier. I have a Time Patroller in the fic named Laddis, and he's a Super Saiyan, but he's just some jerk, which is kind of refreshing. I can do whatever I want with him, and it doesn't matter. Trunks is a big deal, but he's a practical guy, so no matter how strong he is I can just write him as a responsible leader and it works.
But Luffa has to be legendary, so there's this constant need to have her be inspiring or memorable, at least within her own fictional world. So I often look to Goku as a model of how to pull that off without overdoing it.
Tumblr media
I don't know why it suddenly popped into my head just now, but a good example of what I'm going for is when Aragorn first appears in Lord of the Rings. The hobbits see him staring at them from the corner of the tavern, and there's this palpable aura of danger around the guy. The innkeeper says he's a Ranger named "Strider", and speaks of him in hushed tones. And over the course of the book you find out all of his backstory, but that first scene is enough to tell you he's no ordinary dude. Once they find out he's an ally they become pals, but in that moment of uncertainty there's no telling what he might do.
That's the sort of aura I want for Luffa, where she's just another Time Patroller on the team, but she's also got this aura about her that makes her seem unapproachable. That's what I'm striving for, and since it's a Dragon Ball fic, I need to give the character certain powers and abilities to make that work. But at the same time, no one ever asks how many planets Aragorn can destroy.

for the writers ask: 💖 ✨🫘 🦷 ?
💖 What is your primary writing goal for this year?
Finish DWD and Delicate.
✨What's one area of your writing that you think needs the least amount of improvement?
I like to ramble set up a story as if I can come back to it for more, so I guess the length of a fic? xD
🫘 Spill the beans. What's a new project you're doing this year?
More holiday events! If I space them out right. Bringing back Scourge of the Stars and Smutember, and I will be doing Kinkmas and something special for Spring season that's a little similar to VDay Event ♥ It's early in the year so if any other events come up, I may try them out if I like them. Also, I was inspired by actually chatting with some friends before about what I write it made me want to open up more about my writing process and things I wanna do with fanfics. But I couldn't really find any group chats I trusted at a glance or find anything for dbz fic writers (specifically spicy content 👀 but not entirely the premise). I really wanted to take the loneliness out of the writing process and create a space for other dbz writers to have the same. Somewhere to come together and chat, be weird together, bounce ideas, simp and gush over dbz f/o's, share their updates, writing events and fics to help boost traffic to their stories and generally support each other! But I am old and know nothing of discord anymore! so it's a "project" but very much still an idea. It was something I enjoyed in my RP groups that I really miss a lot and hope to find in others who share my love for reading and writing dbz fics ♥
🦷 Is there a chapter, scene, or WIP you're dreading to write (but is necessary to your plot)? Share a snippet or tell us about it!
So a looong time ago, I started working on a FINAL final chapter for Conton City Lockdown to play around with the soulmates/destiny trope and it got pushed deep, deep down in the WIP barrel. I said I would come back to and finish. But it got lengthy with JUST dialogue and now I kinda don't wanna fill in the blanks uwu so idk what to do with it but I don't wanna give it up either. Here is a Snippet w/ some context. The CCH essentially doesn't believe in destiny (despite literally being the one to save all of history), but she starts to ♥
TP: "Could you see yourself doing anything else with your life now? The Time patrol does kind of take over."
Goku: "I guess not anymore. Not knowing what I know now, anyways." "It makes me think a lot about the first time I saw you."
TP: "Stopping Mira? That was a pretty big win for the Time Patrol with your help."
Goku: "It was." "But that wasn't the first time I saw you."
TP: "..What?"
Goku: "Don't you remember? You fell out of the sky." "It was a miracle you came when you did. Ol' Raditz was really giving me and Piccolo a hard time, he really had us thinking on our toes and nothing we hit him with seemed to work. It looked like we were really done for. But then you suddenly appeared." "You saved me." "But I guess we undid that when Piccolo shot me."
TP, surprised: "..My special mission.." "My first time patrol for Supreme Kai of Time was to save you?"
Goku: "Really? That's pretty awesome!" "The first time Supreme Kai of Time came to me for help, she was sending me to help you with Mira. Isn't that something?"
TP: "Holy shit.."
Goku: “Yeah, I didn’t really remember too much about you until I saw you again. All I had was this vague memory of a strong warrior who helped me and Piccolo. I could remember your strength but nothing else. I wanted to see them again.” “Then I finally found you, fighting again, way stronger than you were back then. It all came clear. Knowing that we both had become stronger since then made me excited!”

5, 8, and 22 for the dragonball asks (for some reason it uses letters on your blog but numbers on my dash?? I am confused)
well, that's confusing. just a tumblr thing i guess. anyway thank you!!!!!
5. Who is your favorite villain?
oof, tough one. uh, it really depends? in terms of sheer "holy shit" factor, probably frieza. in terms of who i most enjoy watching commit war crimes, that'd be our boy namek saga vegeta. in terms of who i want to personally beat the shit out of most, beerus (hey, remember when destroying planets in dragon ball was a big deal and an objectively evil thing to do? good times)
8. Do you have a favorite episode from the anime/chapter from the manga?
my favorite chapter is probably chapter 309 "son goku's final fusion!!" bc. vegito. my favorite episode is episode 288 "you're late, goku! everyone party!!" or "he's always late" in the dub. granted, it's also the only episode of z i know for a fact i've seen the entirety of bc. manga fan
22. Do you prefer the sub or the dub?
ah, the big question. uhhhh it sorta depends? like if we're talking about specific characters – king kai, i think the dub handled him better, for instance; same for whis - then it varies from character to character. obviously i'm more familiar with english versions of dragon ball (note that on the rare occasions that i actual manage to write anything, both bulma and piccolo refer to goku as goku rather than son-kun/son– dbz is one of the few anime where i don't think the honorifics are super necessary for casual speech; the only ones that really matter are fairly easily translated, so i don't bother most of the time). i think some of the og english dubs are funnier, albeit unintentionally due to.... early anime dubbing companies having no clue what they were doing ("ok so we'll call this guy zero and that one. fuck it whiskers the wonder cat" "ok what about the one female villain? should we stick with mai?" "NO. femina")
on the other hand, i personally find cultural differences fascinating, and a lot of that is always lost with dubbing (which. duh. it's gotta happen) so in that sense i prefer the sub.
i know there's always a "the characters only sound right in the version i like" argument but honestly i think both the sub and the dub handle the characters pretty well. i'm always blown away by nozawa masako's range and capability, but i think the english voice actors for the characters she plays hold their own. honestly i feel like all of goku's voices (nozawa, schemmel, masakox :P) do a pretty good job.
but i'll be honest– when i think of krillin's voice, i think of lanipator. he's krillin to me
the final answer of sub vs dub for me is the same as my answer for fullmetal alchemist: the manga wins!

Hey just curious but are you gonna continue watching DBZ? Kai only covers 2/3rds of Z. The final arc is done through Kai The Final Chapters. They split it into its own thing for some reason which makes it confusing as a viewer but I wanted to give you a heads up in case you didn't know!
oh i’m actually watching it yeah. i haven’t been super talkative about it cuz i’ve been watching it on a side computer i use in bed so i’m just straight chilling but i’m a few episodes into the world tournament arc right now

ERM WHAT THE HFIL!? Trivia
Tumblr media
Since S1 is coming to a close, here's some TRIVIA!
Originally Erm What The HFIL!? was supposed to be a complete kinky fest where Orion banged nearly everyone (DBZ Confirmed Villians) in HFIL, every chapter was every villain. The main difference from the final product was that Orion didn't kill herself she went rogue and was sent down. She was essentially the same in HFIL (With the fact she was a Liaison) but I changed it to make it a fully fledged series.
Cell x Orion was not originally gonna be endgame because I wanted to focus on redemption and slice of life, and not romance as it's not my best suit. Explains why I kept asking and flip flopping between making it endgame. The main reason why they are shipped together is not for fanservice as I firmly believe in two characters who hold the same issues can overcome it as friends and if it pans out, as lovers.
Most of the series, or atleast the ideas stem from Hazbin Hotel but I made it more better.
Fu being armless was a stylistic choice, and made his character more complicated rather than having him as disabled rep for the sake of rep.
Due to how skewed the continuity of the Overhaul AU was, I had a hard time deciding which religion to go off of, since there's a LOT of religious figures in DBZ. I decided to split the G.O.Ds, Kais, Kaioshin, Zeno, Oriel and The Detity as their own religion. GODs followers being the "Church of Destruction", Kais being the "Church of the Holy Ones", Kaioshin's being the "Church of the Sacred Kais", Zeno being the "Church of the Omni-King", Oriel is just standard Christianity but more leaning on fantasy rather than the actual Christianity to prevent any issues, The Detity's religion is unknown but is a complete secretive religion. Then we also got the Demon Realm and they are considered "Satanism" and once again DBZ Fantasy Satanism. As you can tell King Yemma went with Oriel's religion. Which explains why Orion was sent to HFIL.

The Guardians of Otherworld
About 13-15 years ago I started a DBZ fanfic that was called "Guardians of Otherworld".
It started with Goku dying from old age and ending up in the afterlife, where he realized that all his friends and family who died before him - Chichi, Bulma, Vegeta, Krillin ... had been allowed to keep their bodies.
They all live in a giant mansion that looked a lot like Capsule Corp, and the first thing Goku does is eat the food set out on a table. But well, uhm - it was Vegeta's, because now there's TWO people that are still hungry even when dead, and Vegeta's pissed because fucking Kakarot ate his food.
Lord Kaio then explains to him that after Buu they decided they couldn't lose the strength of the last two full-blooded Saiyans in the universe, so Vegeta and Goku get to keep their bodies. And everyone else too, because no one wants to risk leaving Goku and Vegeta alone without at least some distraction lmao.
Bulma tells Goku that she's glad he's finally here because Vegeta who's been dead for ten years, was so bored without a proper opponent to fight that he was absolutely unbearable.
And Vegeta is very excited to show off how strong he's gotten while training in Otherworld ...
In chapter two Goku and Vegeta go to have their big rematch on the world of the Kaioshin, because everything's a mess there after Buu anyways.
They fight, and during this fight Vegeta reveals that he finally achieve SSJ3 in the afterlife, and that this is the whole secret: the vers first transformation to SSJ3 needs so much energy that a living person can't possibly do it. Gotenks was an exception because the rules for a fusion are different.
(Ngl I've kept this headcanon ever since lol]
Anyways, Vegeta defeats Goku in that rematch and he's learned teleportation too from some dead Yardrat peeps.
The fic ends after chapter two and I never picked it up again but here's some highlights:
Bulma is an Otherworld celebrity bc she keeps inventing cool stuff
Vegeta and Goku have to do the dishes together. It ends with them slapping each other with wet dishcloths
Chichi pulls Vegeta back by his tail when he tries to leave the dishes undone
Getting enough food for Vegeta and Goku to Otherworld is a real pain in the ass
Old Kai was against the entire idea of letting them keep their bodies but he's come around since Roshi died. They're besties (guess why)
Goku and Vegeta are constantly fighting over food and turn everything into a competition
It's not very well written but there are some funny bits I have to admit. Lol.

Darkness Reborn ~ Origins of the Ink Demon Final Chapter Pt. 23 ~
[Time of Sortie - Masamichi Amano]
Homura Akemi : So, after finding out that Maka has been mistaken, The Time Eater told me that I could save 2010s by re-arranging the events that are even happening, eventually, a black known as the lightless black will swallow it hole. And sadly, I didn't even get to say goodbye to the one I truly respected...(sighs) Madoka.
Supreme Kai of Time : Okay, kid. You go for it! Save 2011, stop the events of from ever happening, whatever you do, don't let the Black Hole consume all of Earth!
Trunks : Okay, Homura! Preparing to launch in 5...4...3...2...1...ready for take off! Into 2011!
*DBZ SFX : Energy Wave*
*Sonic SFX : Chaos Control*
Trunks : He we are, kid! 2011 A.D.
Homura Akemi : There it is, the Space Colony ARK.
Trunks : Look alive, carefully. That black hole that appeared in the end of the War of Shadow Realm conflict isn't appeared to be a black hole, it looks like someone used to bomb to open the gates for the Subspace Emissary.
Homura Akemi : Subspace...Emissary?
*DBZ SFX : LOUD BOOMING*
Homura Akemi : So that giant black hole that is swallowing Real World is the gate to Subspace Emissary! I wonder who did it? Should the power of Chaos Control can work?
Trunks : You say so.
Homura Akemi : Alright. here goes. Wish me luck, sir. Chaos...Control!
*DBZ SFX : Energy Wave*
[Inside the Subspace Area]
Homura Akemi : What the...What is this place? So this is Subspace? I though the Subspace existed from Phantasy Star Universe.
Seto : It's no Subspace to Phantasy Star, it's the Subspace of Smash. Unlike Subcon's Subspace, this is a dark realm thought to be equivalent to the Realm of Darknes itself, it's quite obvious that it's the next of level cosmic horror.
Homura Akemi : Who are you? Are you a friend or something?
Seto : I'm Seto...Seto the Deathless...and you are.
Homura Akemi : I'm Homura Akemi, we'll talk later.
Seto : Indeed. Because we need to defeat that thing swallowing Earth whole.
Homura Akemi : Who?
Seto : The king of Subspace himself, the mastermind behind that incident in the year 2008.
"TABUU : KING OF THE SUBSPACE"
Homura Akemi : Is this a human?
Seto : Worse, theories told me that Tabuu is the father of the child that gave Smash Bros to life.
[Tabuu - Takahiro Nishi]
Homura Akemi : F...Father of the Child!?
Sonic : Let's stick together!
Seto : Hey there, Blue Hedgehog! You were late on saving Smash or saving Nintendo's butt. This guy Tabuu right here, is a human. But it's unkown to it's origins. So now we gotta fight thing!
Mario : No let us do it together!
Sonic : Mario. You finally made it and I saved all your butts.
Mario : Save your strength, blue wonder. Let's show this guy a good clean fight, with style! Smashers! Every Third-party characters for herself! ATTAAAAAACK!!!
All : (battlecries)
Sonic : Let's tear down this realm!
(the battle begins)
Tabuu : You incompetent fools. You are going to fight me for the last and 412th time already? Guess I have no choice, but destroy you all once again! And this time, you will be expunged...Forever!
Seto : Not if we can help it!
Tabuu : Ha! Your attacks won't stop me! I am invincible! Once I swallow the world whole, I will rule the world as much to Galaxy! Even if it costs us the planets! Everything will be a downhill for you! Not a single strand of your heart, soul, and DNA will remain!
Seto : The only thing that will ever remain is for you to shut up about it!
Sonic : It'll take us 10 seconds to beat you! You're only a joke, you'll might even become a spirit one day!
Mario : This will serve you for one-hit killing on us, you weirdly holographic bastard!
Luigi : Let no one pass through!
Tabuu : Fear ye not, mortals! You may have saved your selves from the subspace's corruption, but still...I lived long enough to see this day that the world of Smash will be erased within history! and all of you will face the inevitable powers of a God!
Seto : You a God? No...You're a joke to that! You're just a cosmic horror with an inflated ego! Someone is greater than you being a godly entity for a self-insert human being! Does that make you special for a godlike wannabe!?
Tabuu : Ohhh! Wh...Why you! I'll smash you to a million pieces and forever hold that tongue of yours! You have no idea who you're talking to! So enough is enough!
(during the mid-battle)
Seto : *panting*
Sonic : *panting*
Mario : *panting* So...Aren't we done yet? This guy's got a lot of guts.
Sonic : It might be.
Samus : Damn! He's one hell of an entity!
Donkey Kong : Can't we do something with this guy! He has the nerves to be this intense!
Tabuu : I've just about had it up with you parasites of the earth. I will rid the earth clean, and all of it's inhabitants, starting with you! My wings shall make enough power to destroy each and single one of you! I shall forever remain as King of the Subspace! And not a single soul can stop me!
Homura Akemi : Hey, Ugly!
Tabuu : What...What is this?
Homura Akemi : LEAVE EVERYONE ON EARTH ALONE! THIS PLANET ISN'T YOURS TO CONQUER! SO DON'T MESS WITH ME OR THIS PLANET! I WON'T LET YOU DESTROY THE WORLD!
Godoka : Then perhaps...Leave that to me.
Homura Akemi : That voice...Madoka?
Tabuu : No! It can't be! The true ruler of the Cosmos has finally arrived!
Godoka : You are not getting away with this and so are you! You and your army had destroyed this planet's peace, and therefore...you shall disappear from the likes of you.
Seto : Hey...Isn't that...
(Madoka appears as a Goddess, Godoka)
"GODOKA : RULER OF THE COSMOS"
Homura Akemi : Madoka!
"Unbelievable! So the ruler of the cosmos..."
"Is the girl who was part of their timeline..."
"A childhood friend to Homura Akemi!"
"How did a middle school student turned into that?"
"Where did Cosmic Horror get to this?"
"Everyone will know that answer."
~ 103th Scene : The Goddess of the Cosmos."

Bizarrely enough, the Latin-American Spanish dub of DBZ Kai was also rejected by a good chunk of the fandom here, although for different reasons.
Cloverway Inc. was the studio that originally made the LatAm Spanish dub of all things Dragon Ball (and many other anime series, including Saint Seiya, which was why Cloverway was chosen to begin with). But around 2004 or 2005, Tōei decided to license and distribute their stuff in the entire American continent directly, thus Cloverway lost Tōei's catalogue and had to close its doors a couple of years later.
In 2010, when this Tōei subsidiary had to make a Spanish dub of DBZ Kai, they hired a studio called Candiani. But Tōei decided to be cheapskates this time and gave Candiani a smaller budget; they also ordered the people at Candiani to not translate directly from Japanese to Spanish, and instead base their Spanish dub on the English dub that had already been made by Funimation (and had been censored by Nicktoons a little bit, admittedly).
The result was that the dub was still quite accurate, just like "Ye Olde" LatAm Spanish dubs, but for many fans, it still felt... off. There were two main factors for this:
Due to the budget decrease enforced by Tōei, Candiani was unable to re-hire the voice cast of the old LatAm Spanish dub, even the main characters' iconic VAs (such as Mario Castañeda, René García, Carlos Segundo and Laura Torres, who previously played Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo and kid Gohan respectively).
Because of losing the original VAs, Candiani hired brand-new ones for the dub of DBZ Kai, and even though the Spanish script per se was an accurate translation due to being based upon a Funimation dub that already was a good Japanese-to-English translation... this was still "a dub of another dub", it was to be expected that this would subtly affect the Spanish dub in some other way, and that's exactly what happened here: it soon became pretty obvious that the new VAs were chosen specifically to make the characters sound similar to how they sounded in English when played by the Funimation voice cast (with Edson Matus, Andrés Gutiérrez Coto, Idzi Dutkiewicz and Karina Altamirano sounding quite a lot like Schemmel's Goku, Sabat's Vegeta & Piccolo and Clinkenbeard's kid Gohan, but in LatAm Spanish).
So yeah, the LatAm fans hated it. YMMV on whether their hatred was less or more irrational than what the English-speaking fans felt towards their own dub of DBZ Kai.
Luckily, the English-speaking fandom's fixation on memes isn't nearly as prevalent within the LatAm fandom, so when it was time to dub the new movies, DBZ Kai: The Final Chapters and Dragon Ball Super, Tōei's American subsidiary simply went back to the way Clowerway was doing things back in the 90s: they re-hired Castañeda, García, Segundo, Torres and everyone else, and made Spanish dubs directly out of the original Japanese versions again, without shoehorning memes into the translated scripts.
I know this is kind of preaching to the choir in this case, but it is so damn weird to me to think that Funimation's best dub (Kai) was a decade ago, and it's not like fandom memes didn't exist then
That's because they believed that a faithful dub would sell and take off, especially as complaining about dub changes and inaccuracies online was popular at the time. Plus they wanted a chance to prove they could do this proper. Then it didn't sell. Like, people boycotted it, refused to buy it, spread all kinds of BS about it and how they removed "all the blood and swearing", with some even claiming to recall how the original dub would say things as heavy as "godd*mn", "a**hole", or even "sh*t" even on the Toonami broadcasts... it was weird and dumb and ugly. That, and people will insist to this day that the performances and writing in the old dub were just better somehow. So they're back to catering to the memes (and even trying to spark new ones) to try to appease the fanbase, sadly.

Best DBZ Fights #9
Tumblr media
Goku & Piccolo vs. Raditz
Manga: Chapters 5 - 10, Volume 1 Anime: Episodes 3 - 5 (Kai: 2 - 3)
The battle that started it all. Seeing Goku and Piccolo, the foes who fought the final battle in Dragon Ball, teaming up against a tougher opponent is cool in of itself, but it's the way that teamwork manifests that really elevates this fight, with Goku as the brawn and Piccolo as the brains. And let's not forget: it concludes with Goku dying, sacrificing himself and Raditz to Piccolo's Special Beam Cannon attack. Now that's one Hell of a way to kick off a new saga!
