It's time for Beginnings, the podcast where writer and performer Andy Beckerman talks to the comedians, writers, filmmakers and musicians he admires about their earliest creative experiences and the numerous ways in which a creative life can unfold.
Tumblr media
On today's episode I talk to cartoonist Ben Passmore. Originally from Massachusetts, Ben has been writing and illustrating comics since he was a child. He's created comics like Daygloayhole, the Eisner Award-nominated and Ignatz Award-winning comic collection Your Black Friend, and BTTM FDRS with Ezra Claytan Daniels, which was published by Fantagraphics last year. In addition, he is a regular contributor to the daily satirical publication The Nib.
I'm on Twitter here and you can get the show with:

Smash Pages Q&A: Ben Passmore on ‘Daygloayhole’ and more
Tumblr media
Ben Passmore’s short comic Your Black Friend was a sensation when it was published in 2016. It was nominated for an Eisner Award, won an Ignatz Award, was on NPR’s 2017 list of 100 Favorite Comics and Graphic Novels, and was turned into an animated short film. Passmore has become a regular contributor to The Nib and many other outlets, but for people who have been reading Passmore for years, this recent political work has been something of a departure for him. He first came to notice with Daygloayhole, which is a very different kind of comic, but shares a lot of the same sensibilities and ideas that motivate his political and essayistic comics.
This year saw the publication of Your Black Friend and Other Strangers, which collects a number of short comics by Passmore. Silver Sprocket is publishing a print version of Daygloayhole, the second issue of which is out this summer. Passmore has a comic in the current issue of the Fantagraphics anthology Now and has a comic in the June/July issue of The Believer.

Daygloayhole #1 is out today
Daygloayhole #1, the new comic from Ben Passmore, is out today.
How’s your post apocalypse going? Enjoying the irradiated deserts, menacing clouds of sentient porn magazines, mutant police, and hipsters on some street art kick? No? This is the best the end of the world gets. Social and political commentary mixed with punk nonsense and gore drawn in vibrant florescent colors.

Favorite art/artists that I recently found, mainly focusing on BLM, human rights/abolishment and indigenous voices. I am incredibly empowered and also moved to tears by many of these pieces and I wanted to share them with you. With all of the infographics and memes running rampant (don’t get me wrong I love memes and infographics), I find art like this to be a perfect place to stop, breathe, and feel less alone. . 🖤🖤🖤 Love and rage to all my comrades. . Thank you very much for these masterful pieces and all the work you do for the communities. Your energy, expression and time is so appreciated! . Artists featured: @jonasgoonface @thefakepan @daygloayhole @_asundergrowth @hookieduke @moonmilktattoos @yungtonnerre @dylanraewulf @chiefladybird . . . . #artthatinspires #artthatspeaks #artwithsoul #blacklivesmatter #blackartists #blackvoices #indigenousart #indigenousart #1312 #nocampsnocages #abolishice #abolishprisons #landback https://www.instagram.com/p/CHk-SA8lnmN/?igshid=oztpvk9z49d0

DEBUTING AT TCAF 2019: BTTM FDRS By Ezra Claytan Daniels and Ben Passmore
288 Pages, Full Colour, Hardcover, 7″ x 6″, Spring 2019, Published by Fantagraphics
An Afrofuturist horror-comedy about gentrification and cultural appropriation.
Once a thriving working-class neighborhood on Chicago’s south side, the “Bottomyards” is now the definition of urban blight. When an aspiring fashion designer and her image-obsessed BFF descend upon the hood in search of cheap rent, they discover something far more seductive… and deadly.
Gentrification and body horror collide in this brutal satire from the award-winning creators of Upgrade Soul and Your Black Friend.
“I fell in love with this comic right about page one, and then just kept falling. Gentrification horror at its finest.” — Victor LaValle, author of The Changeling
====================
Ben Passmore lives with his cat in Philly. Daygloayhole #3 —- The third issue of Ben Passmore’s Heavy Metal-ish, Brandon Graham-ish post-apocalyptic series. This one features a trio of snarky, gentrified, vampiric (?) hipsters that go around literally consuming the cultural remains of human society in a giant robot. It’s a nice metaphor. The previous two issues rambled a bit too much for me but this one is much more tightly plotted, suggesting that Passmore is hitting his stride with this series. — @cmautner
