hello!! i just finished reading your magnum opus (What Spring Does with the Cherry Trees) and i love love loved it! i cannot stop thinking about the cozy little universe you created…and like not to be greedy after reading a novel-length fic you poured your blood, sweat, and tears into writing…but i’m just SAYING that a Rio POV fic in that universe would bring me much joy…

Ok so I’m terrible at recommendations because I always forget what I already read or forget to include someone’s amazing work. So please comment if anyone has additional recommendations! But on this ask I recruited assistance from an expert. @abi1821 has read and re-read pretty much all the fics. She’s my encyclopedia. My fic reference guide. So here’s what we came up with between us:

Splinter by Daydreamstew is a big comfort fic for me. It’s 2.09 reimagined but still containing some of that angsty heartbreak and sadness that we know Beth felt in those moments. But it softens it. So romantic. 🥰

Tryin' to Even the Score by convolutedConcussion is one I remember reading a while back. If you find catharsis through Brio finally talking, this is your fic. They have a discussion more honest than they ever did in canon.

The Ottoman by Niham87 is another one I read a long time ago and remember finding the callback to season 3 really funny and cleverly placed. From my recollection, this is primarily smut. I am pro smut! Brio have a great time and I can see why she’d joke with him about that ottoman. 😉

when the party's over by rebellking is one I hadn’t read before. It’s a @abi1821 recommendation. It’s another reimagining of 2.09 had Rio followed Beth into that shower. Looks to be a smutty one-shot with Rio taking back some of that power Beth stripped him of with her dismissal.

Comforting Haze by brokensatellites isn’t exactly a continuation as a detailed description of the events of 2.09. It’s still the canonic ending, but it gives Beth some humanity through her decision to hurt him. It’s romantic and beautiful and still tragic. Also recommended by @abi1821.

Transatlanticism (I need you so much closer) by Flashindie is one I haven’t read yet, but recommended by @abi1821. It looks to be set in the aftermath of 2.09, and knowing Flashindie’s writing caliber, it will be a stellar work.

Well, I am blessed with incredibly thoughtful readers who’ll leave me amazing comments that I all cherish and enjoy so I don’t really have a favourite, but there’s something very special with a certain type of comments where the reader starts by explaining that they thought at first they wouldn’t like the story but they gave it a try and actually enjoyed it? I got this kind of comments on rather “niche” fics such as the Nursing Home or the Ghost AU (and some of the Dean POV-ish stuff lol), and it always feels like a testament to my writing that I managed to suck people in, who didn’t think it would be their thing, you know?

12. What is your favorite theme/subject matter/trope/ship to write about? Why?

Grief. (Shared) Trauma. Pain. Physicality. Symbolism. Healing. Sexual tension. Characters in denial. Oh moments. Caretaking. Hugs and other physical manifestations of affection. Kisses. Absolute Crack. Whatever ship that sparks for me.

As for why, there's a short answer which is that it just speaks to me, and a long answer which I believe is perhaps too personal to share with the room 😘

I hope I can write the next chapter of my Brio High School AU ( it's been more than a year since I last updated, r.i.p), and I had a few other Nbc Good Girls fics planned, but we'll see. I really wan to write them, but since the show ended it's been really hard to find inspiration.

Elizabeth, you're so wet for me.

Some of his words lingered on her mind for months. Others are present till this day. Thanks to the latest he said to her, she now has been rummaging her brain for more.

She already has a password protected file in her mind with his greatest hits. Every word of encouragement. Every spiteful threat. Every laughable phrase. And when something that changes their dynamic happens, it unlocks magically and they start playing over and over and over again.

Number one for fifth consecutive week: a wire affair. To call it differently feels too real. She prefers it that way; if it's going to fill her mind, its better if it feels like a movie. It starts in her head as a cacophony, her ever present pants, his grunts, fabric ruffling and wet pumping sounds drilling her head. Disorienting as it is, it has been used for her as a vivid fantasy in the shower because apparently she can't learn to prioritize her mental wellbeing. Not even physically, the power the memory holds on her so impossibly strong the earth under her feet alway shakes.

I'm the only one who can make you come like this.

So, it has been hilariously treacherous. Funny and infuriating for her at the same time, because she lost her goddamn mind.

But she enjoys being alone with him; his presence is a figment that belongs only in her memories and never in real time. The one that lives in the present is made of hostility, and a lot of things she doesn't want to find out.

The Rio in her mind is easier to get with. It's just a moment in time cut for her own pleasure. It's less dangerous. It's simple to file away.

Look at you taking my hand.

Her problem? When they collide, the one in past memories says the same thing as the one that's in front of her, overlapping constantly.

He's taking some cash in his hand, counting with his fingers to two, to three. She wonders if that works, seems like he doesn't know how to really count. A snort escapes her lips, too late for her to stop.

"What's so funny, Elizabeth. Tell it to the crowd."

What's so funny, Elizabeth. Are you gonna come for me?

He's no longer holding the money, his hands drumming the cardboard box sides waiting for an answer. Rio's looking directly at her defiantly, pissed that his money ritual has been disturbed by her. She bites the inside of her mouth, trying to ignore him and back to counting cash herself, but he already clocked that something happened with her.

But now she's worried about thinking about it, her ribcage so tight Beth feels her body is back to wearing that butterfly dress while trying not to lean too close to his chest. Their touch was at bare minimum that night. If you don't count her scratching his abdomen exposed by his waistband and him hoovering her leg to one of the shelves and sliding his hand between her folds.

This pussy missed my fingers.

Now her mouth is getting drier and drier, but her spirit won't waver. She learned to live with his ghost haunting every sense and every fantasy that she ever had, all replaced by his hands, his voice, his words. Beth can stand two minutes more of him invading her work space.

Even with that in mind, she can't contain the little squeal that leaves her throat when he takes the box and starts to walk in her direction, standing in front of her, an unreadeable look in his eyes but interested in her sudden change of demeanor.

"Apparently you can't keep it quiet, so say it."

Fuck. You want it so much that you can't keep it quiet, huh.

"We're alone. Tell me, darlin'."

We're alone. Scream, darlin'.

Beth feels she's dreaming, every word too similar to those said in the pass. And when she bites her tongue to tell if she's awake, his fingers slide down her temple to her jaw, like the old times.

hmm i assume warm water bc it took me like 9 months, a thesis and a leftover heartbreak to write. and yes it was worth it. it made me fall in love with writing!! and it was wild to discover people liked it. so yes, no ragrets

"Is it too much?" she asked, her arms folding in front of her.

The corner of his mouth quirked up as he closed the distance between them, his hands caressing her hips.

What Spring Does with the Cherry Trees

One of the things that frustrates Beth about him the most—and she has a long list—is how he always knows where to find her.

“This is a bad idea,” Beth huffs on a laugh, breathless as Rio moves above her.

There’s a terrifying moment when she’s pulling the poofy prom dress down over her shoulders where it gets stuck so good that Annie thinks this is how it ends – suffocating on purple ruffles, arms pinned straight above her head as she thrashes around her bedroom.

6. On The Ropes

Zeke’s got a tell. He thinks he’s slick cause he’s a southpaw—moves different, tries to surprise him with left hooks that have his full weight behind ‘em—but every time he gears up to swing, his elbow pops out.

7. Better Than Cake

There’s a long, blurry moment where she’s not sure she heard him right, where she does nothing but scan the younger man’s face, searching for a likeness to Rio – the face she knows every tiny aspect of.

8. As Good As This

It fits in his palm.

10. Touch Me, Remind Me Who I Am

The bed dips. A familiar, purposefully ungraceful shifting of weight that Beth doesn’t need to open her eyes to picture clearly.

Patterns? Um I either start super bluntly or I know in.....4 of these i start the fic with words or a phrase that I also end the chapter with or thread through the whole fic. I love a callback what can i say. Like Cherry Trees every chapter had some mention of you found me/he knows where to find her kinda thing.

as per your last post, if beth doesnt throw rio out and chooses to stand up to dean and find a different way to get her kids back, what do you think would happen with rio and beth?

Hi Anon! I think you mean per this post, right? This is a difficult question to answer because none of these things could have possibly happened together. If Beth was a different person, she wouldn’t have even sought out a One Last Time. She wouldn’t have asked for an intimate goodbye because it wouldn’t have been a goodbye. So 2.09 wouldn’t have even happened and she and Rio would have never gotten to experience what it feels like when Beth lets down some of her guard.

Similarly, if Rio were a different man he would have protected himself more, or at least not taken her rejection so to heart. Or known what to say to her to understand what she was feeling. But Rio isn’t that man and so we had his wounded little heart left cold and rejected in her bed, and we had Beth building up her walls taller and stronger than ever.

To me, that’s the beauty of them. It’s why I love them. If they were good communicators and always made the right choices (“right��� meaning in each other’s favor), I would not have liked them or the show. I’ve tried so many shows and books that are compared to ✨Brio energy✨ but it’s never the same because there never is quite such a mix of matching mismatch to the characters, if that makes sense. Stories try to take the easy way out on their characters and give them happiness too quickly. I like to watch imperfect people heal through trial by fire. The wound needs to have the dead flesh excised before it can start to heal. And it will never heal perfect. There are always scars.

So I like the Brio injuries they inflicted on each other. I like that it took them until the end of season 4 for Rio to finally say the words: “You hurt my feelings.” And for Beth to finally admit to him that she never believed she’d be his choice. I like their melancholy comfort in that kitchen and I like the battle-weary stances of their bodies angled toward each other just so. It’s such a different kind of standoff to all the other times they’ve stood facing each other in her kitchen. They’ve had the thrumming energy of possibility when he came to see her after she left him her pearls. They’ve had the awkward stiffness of wanting each other but not wanting to say it out loud when she brought him home “to get his cut” in 2.09. And then finally we had the amicable partnership as he knocked on her door for once and they were both so unbearably honest with each other, without pretense. “Maybe we’re more friends.” They had to cut away the rotten flesh before they could start to heal.

But I do love Splinter by daydreamstew. It’s like a combo of the angst I love and the comfort that you’re alluding to in this ask. It’s a believable pivot in behavior that could have changed their outcomes. 💔

As the haze clears, Beth's eyes narrow, even as her head lolls on his shoulder. She expected—well, she thought he'd kill her if he found out. For any of it, all of it: shooting him, hiring Fitzpatrick, working with the secret service. Any one of those betrayals surely had to come at the cost of her life.

But here they are, her sins dragged out to the light, and instead, there's something triumphant, smug, in his tone. Like he's won something, but that's not—

"What about you?"

Her voice is raspy, her throat still ragged, but his smirk at the way the words slur together has her flailing her hands for the arms of the chair, struggling to push herself up. The air's cool where the tacky remains of his come's smeared across her back as she peels herself off of him and his hands still, holding her upright while she steadies herself and gets her bearings. 

"What about me?"

"You knew, and you still let me in. Introduced me to your family." 

Beth slides off his lap, twisting around to face him as her knees hit the floor. She's facing away from the mirror now, but she still knows the picture she makes kneeling between his legs. Would know it even without the way his eyes go darker still. 

Penitent. Supplicant.

She's anything but.

Beth runs her hands up Rio's thighs as she leans in. His cock's soft, spent for now. Even with the drugs raging through both their systems, it seems they still need a moment's reprieve. She knows she should use this moment, this calm between the storm, to gather herself, her thoughts, make a plan for what she'll do now that he knows.
