The page does not allow copy-and-pasting, but a few key points:
(i) The Kayanic peoples of Borneo had an advanced knowledge of metallurgy, which translated into a diversity and specificity of carving tools (used in craft, architecture, canoe-carving, etc.)
(ii) Museums/ collections/ archives that contain Kayanic Arts are not only located in Malaysian and Indonesian Borneo, but also in the United States, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Australia
(iii) Many edifices created by the peoples of Western to Central Borneo have collapsed and been consumed by the jungle
(iv) Physical characteristics of carved statues and coffins: large heads with bulging eye-sockets (often rounded or oblong in shape); protruding jaws; concave faces -- possibly inspired by the Bronze Age period of the Dongson (Vietnam). There were trading patterns during this period that influenced the characteristics found in artefacts in the region
(v) Metal artefacts in Borneo are not prehistoric or proto-historic; they were possibly made in/ around Brunei from the 14th to 19th centuries
(vi) The carving styles of Bornean artefacts from that period display a synthesis that resulted from movement of peoples throughout the region (through trading, slavery, migration, etc.)
(vii) “A category of zoo anthropomorphic spirits is also characteristically found in Kayanic sculpture”
(vii) the craft of Western Kalimantan (Sarawak) and Eastern Borneo is regarded as less stylistically ambitious than their Central Bornean counterparts
(viii) As a rule-of-thumb, artefacts made of ironwood (the material used mainly by the Dayak for statues and as building materials) were stated to survive no longer than a period of 150-200 years, due to the tropical climate in which they were located
(ix) In the 1970s, a great number of Dayak statues began to appear in local and international markets; this overlapped with invasive logging, erosion, and periodic droughts in the area.
(x) It is rare to find authentic “riverine” artefacts as most were damaged due to the proximity of their origin to rivers; tribes mainly set up their villages around rivers
(xi) From the late 1950s to 1970s, the Indonesian presidents Sukarno and Suharto forbade the construction and use of longhouses (this was common housing for the indigenous peoples of Borneo). This coincided with the pressure of the last of the “traditionalists” to convert either to Christianity or Islam (Christianity is a major religion in Borneo, and Islam is the majority religion of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei [Borneo comprises Malaysian Borneo, Kalimantan (Indonesia), and the entirety of Brunei]). Many older carvings during this period were sold to Malay/ Bugis and/ or Chinese traders.
(xii) Many indigenous carvers thus turned to other professions, disrupting this traditional practice. These practices were taken up again later, although modern pieces have marked aesthetic differences: they are “softer and have overall less visual impact”
(xiii) From the 19th century onwards, there was a presence of pieces that were created solely for a Western market
(xiv) Aside from Dayak carvers, many carvers of the contemporary age were/ are of Javanese, Bugis, and Chinese heritage; often they come from families who have lived in the area for multiple generations

The Iban men had been practicing such piercing method for many centuries. However, not only as protective sheath during war or body jewelry BUT more importantly to increase sexual pleasure. #Repost @larskrutak with @get_repost ・・・ Indigenous warriors of Kalimantan (Borneo) once wore fantastic tattoo motifs covering the entire surfaces of their body. For example, Dayak men of the Kahajan and Katingan rivers photographed in 1896 and drawn in 1920 possess a tattoo style no longer seen today. The central motif on their chests represents the trunk of the Garing tree; adjoining it above are two outstretched wings of the hornbill; and finally the tattooing that appears down the arms and over the shoulders represents the leaves of the areca palm. Garing trees were believed to be immortal and invulnerable, and areca leaves were used in curing rites by shamans to repel evil spirits. The hornbill, marking rank and prestige, was believed to provide protection against the intrusion of evil spirits living in the jungle. Among the Iban, figures of the hornbill (tenyalang) were often carved and propitiated with sacrifices of pigs and human heads before they were mounted on display. The spirit of the figure was thought to leave its wooden body, fly to the longhouse of the enemy, and weaken the spirit of the headhunters living there. Kayan warriors wore hornbill feathers in their war hats, an honor bestowed only to those men who had previously taken heads. Among some Dayak groups, the hornbill was also an omen creature that received communications from the god of war and other deities. Interestingly, many of the origin myths surrounding tattoo in Borneo (e.g., Kayan and Iban) are nearly equivalent to others told among Indigenous groups living in the northern Philippines and Hainan Island, China. In each of these tales, one or two particular species of bird created tattooing for the peoples of the area to appropriate for their own use. Borneo is one of the few places in the world where traditional tattooing is still practicedtoday. Archeological evidence has shown that ancestors of some contemporary native tribes have lived in Borneo for over 50,000 years. The term, “Dayak” is applied to a variety of natives tribes including the Ibans, Kayans and Kenyahs.
Tumblr media
Headhunting and tattooing were intricately connected in the magic, ritual and social life of many tribes. The hand tattoo was a symbol of status in life and also served as important function after death.Tattooing, piercing, and other traditional Dayak arts are of great antiquity. Many of the traditional tattoo designs resemble decorative motifs found in the art of Bali and Java, and the tattooing instruments and techniques used by the Dayaks are similar to those found throughout Polynesia suggesting that Stone Age voyageurs shared their knowledge throughout the area.

Strong Tattoo Culture in Borneo
This amazing culture of tattooing created one of the most famous tribal design of recent modern history, i am talking about the Bunga Terung or more wildly known as the Borneo Flower. This particular design would come across the eyes of tattoo aficionados all over the globe trough magazines that reported the amazing culture of dayak tattooing.
Apparently there is very limited information about the concept behind this symbol, but as limited as it is, it holds interesting analogy’s with the natural world.
The Bunga Terung, which translates to eggplant flower, is the first tattoo a Borneo male would receive. The Bunga Terung is a coming of age tattoo which marks the passage of a boy into manhood. The Bunga Terung has a spiral at the center of the eggplant flower, known as Tali Nyawa, which means the rope of life and is identical to the underside of a which symbolizes the beginning of a new life.
borneo eggplan flower
dot work borneo tattoo
borneo shoulder tattoo
All the tattoos, following the eggplant flower, are like a diary. A young male would go out on his own to find knowledge and from each place he went to he would get one tattoo to mark not only where he is from but also where he has been. From each place the tattoos have different styles so the regional differences in his tattoos would tell the story of his journeys in life.
The traditional Bunga Terung tattoo has such a deep meaning behind it; 1) One on each shoulder for the ‘Berjalai’ journey to make you stronger to carry your travelling pack. 2) Protection 3) the centre coil to symbolise the transformation from a tadpole (young man) to maturity.
This is one of  the most famous and aesthetically pleasing tattoos we saw come out of the tribal tattoo boom era. sometimes a beautiful shape would coincide with a beautiful meaning.
The Bunga Terung or Flower of Borneo Borneo is one of the few places in the world where traditional tattooing is still practicedtoday. Archeological evidence has shown that ancestors of some contemporary native tribes have lived in Borneo for over 50,000 years.
