Chinese Tattoo culture 100 B.C.E.
Chinese Tattoo culture 100 B.C.E.
Early Chinese sources describe a intricate multilayered culture of tattooing in ancient China. Tattoos could be seen as as punishment; mark for the slave; or as mere adornment, as well that of a strong tattoo culture inside the military. Seems hard to believed but maybe very little has change in such a long time.
Inside this great paper by writer Carrie E. Reed title “Early Chinese Tattoo”the…

Rip Lyle Tuttle
Tuttle was born in Chariton, Iowa in 1931 but grew up in Ukiah, California. At the age of fourteen he purchased his first tattoo for $3.50 (equivalent to $50 today). In 1949, he began tattooing professionally. In 1954 he opened his own studio in San Francisco. This first shop was open for 35 years. Tuttle tattooed Janis Joplin, Cher, Jo Baker,Henry Fonda, Paul Stanley, Joan Baez, the Allman Brothers and many other notable musicians, actors, and celebrities.
He has tattooed on all seven continents, been tattooed on six continents, and has never knowingly tattooed a minor. He officially retired in 1990 but will still occasionally tattoo his signature on a friend or acquaintance. His fame within tattooing was somewhat controversial, as many tattooists of his day disliked his statements to the press and “shameless self-promotion”. When Tuttle was on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine in October 1970, Sailor Jerry put the picture inside his toilet.
His first shop when working for Bert Grimm at 16 Cedar Way, Long Beach, California. on “The Pike”. After tattooing in Anchorage and Fairbanks, Alaska and California. Tuttle opened up shop in 1960 at #30 7th St., in between Mission St. and Market St., also referred to as South of Market, San Francisco, California. Tuttle tattooed at #30 7th St., San Francisco, California. for 29 and a half years, until the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake caused the building to be yellow tagged. The shop reopened soon after at 841 Columbus St. and continues to operate as a studio and museum.
Mr Tuttle leaves his art behind for everyone to enjoy and leaves as part of the Americana Tatto History as well.

Borneo is one of the few places in the world where traditional tattooing is still practicedtoday. Archeological evidence has shown that ancestors of some contemporary native tribes have lived in Borneo for over 50,000 years. The term, “Dayak” is applied to a variety of natives tribes including the Ibans, Kayans and Kenyahs.
Tumblr media
Headhunting and tattooing were intricately connected in the magic, ritual and social life of many tribes. The hand tattoo was a symbol of status in life and also served as important function after death.Tattooing, piercing, and other traditional Dayak arts are of great antiquity. Many of the traditional tattoo designs resemble decorative motifs found in the art of Bali and Java, and the tattooing instruments and techniques used by the Dayaks are similar to those found throughout Polynesia suggesting that Stone Age voyageurs shared their knowledge throughout the area.

Strong Tattoo Culture in Borneo
This amazing culture of tattooing created one of the most famous tribal design of recent modern history, i am talking about the Bunga Terung or more wildly known as the Borneo Flower. This particular design would come across the eyes of tattoo aficionados all over the globe trough magazines that reported the amazing culture of dayak tattooing.
Apparently there is very limited information about the concept behind this symbol, but as limited as it is, it holds interesting analogy’s with the natural world.
The Bunga Terung, which translates to eggplant flower, is the first tattoo a Borneo male would receive. The Bunga Terung is a coming of age tattoo which marks the passage of a boy into manhood. The Bunga Terung has a spiral at the center of the eggplant flower, known as Tali Nyawa, which means the rope of life and is identical to the underside of a which symbolizes the beginning of a new life.

All the tattoos, following the eggplant flower, are like a diary. A young male would go out on his own to find knowledge and from each place he went to he would get one tattoo to mark not only where he is from but also where he has been. From each place the tattoos have different styles so the regional differences in his tattoos would tell the story of his journeys in life.
The traditional Bunga Terung tattoo has such a deep meaning behind it; 1) One on each shoulder for the ‘Berjalai’ journey to make you stronger to carry your travelling pack. 2) Protection 3) the centre coil to symbolise the transformation from a tadpole (young man) to maturity.
This is one of  the most famous and aesthetically pleasing tattoos we saw come out of the tribal tattoo boom era. sometimes a beautiful shape would coincide with a beautiful meaning.
The Bunga Terung or Flower of Borneo Borneo is one of the few places in the world where traditional tattooing is still practicedtoday. Archeological evidence has shown that ancestors of some contemporary native tribes have lived in Borneo for over 50,000 years.

The name the “Star of David” is quite new. Before it, this star was called the “Seal of Solomon”. The story of Solomon’s seal was believed to be developed by medieval Arabic writers who claimed that Solomon’s signet ring was engraved by God Himself and was given to Solomon from heaven.
This ring variously gave Solomon the power to command demons, Jinns or to speak with animals. Due to the proverbial wisdom of Solomon, his signet ring, or its supposed design, it came to be seen as an amulet or talisman, or a symbol or character in medieval and Renaissance-era magic, occultism, and alchemy.
The ring of Salomon
The legend of the Seal of Solomon was developed primarily by medieval Arabic writers, who related that the ring was engraved by God and was given to the king directly from heaven. The ring was made from brass and iron, and the two parts were used to seal written commands to good and evil spirits, respectively. In one tale, a demon, either Asmodeus, or Sakhr, obtained possession of the ring and ruled in Solomon’s stead for forty days. In a variant of the tale of the ring of Polycrates from Herodotus, the demon eventually threw the ring into the sea, where it was swallowed by a fish, caught by a fisherman, and served to Solomon.
In Islamic eschatology, the Beast of the Earth is equipped with both the Staff of Moses and the Seal of Solomon and uses the latter to stamp the nose of the unbelievers.
The date of origin legends surrounding the Seal of Solomon is difficult to establish.
Symbol transmutation into star of David
Early uses of the hexagram seen in the Star of David can be seen dating far back in history, where it was used purely as a decoration on antiquities.
Some scholars suggest that this shape might have been used as an ornament in synagogues, even before its religious connotations were formed. One of the first uses linked to Jewish identity was in the 11th Century, when the famous Tanakh manuscript featured it as an ornament in 1008.
A hundred years later, the Star of David was used again in the Leningrad Codex in 1108. This book is known to be the longest-surviving, full edition of the Hebrew Bible that still exists in modern day.
In the 17th Century, the bustling Jewish quarter located in Vienna featured markings that contained hexagrams, the same shape used within the Star of David. This was intended to distinguish this quarter of the city from the rest of the architecture, providing a clear marker of the Jewish identity within the city. This was around the same time that the symbol began to be used en-masse in synagogues throughout Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

At the end of the 19th Century, the Star of David became a symbol of the Zionist movement, propelling its symbolism of Jewish identity on the international stage.
On a sad and unfortunate side note, later on during World War II in the 20th century, the Star of David was chosen by the Nazis as the symbol to mark and identify Jewish individuals for persecution. The symbol used was typically yellow, or blue with a white background, and wearing one was enforced by the Nazi population. It became mandatory and anyone from Jewish population who did not wear it was punished severely.
Despite this kind of inhumane use of the symbol, some Jewish people chose to wear the symbol voluntarily as a show of defiance against the Nazi invasion.
After the Holocaust, the Star of David was used in the national flag of Israel.

If we take into account the birth place of this symbol we might be incline to speculate that this tattoo might be use in ritual magic practices to far back in time to have any recollection. The oldest recount of this practice comes from world war era story’s.
Arnold Shield who was who attached to the 3rd British Infantry Division.
His unit was given the objective of taking Caen and opening a corridor into Belgium and Holland. Whilst on this operation they found themselves on the flank of the Paratroopers at Arnhem but were unable to help them. At Lingham in Germany they discovered a V2 Factory which they then destroyed and his unit finally finished up in Bremen.
Before going into action on D-Day Arnold had the Star of David tattooed onto his arm.
Arnold explains that the reason he had this done was that he fully expected to be killed in action and, in his words, wished it to be known that he had fought and died as a Jew.
I think we can conclude that the modern appreciation of this symbol inside the tattoo world falls into the translation of anything Jewish, assimilation of this particular culture and its history or maybe the religion aspect all by itself.
The Star of David The name the “Star of David” is quite new. Before it, this star was called the “Seal of Solomon”.

The process of cover up its continuing, this piece starts to come together. When i first saw the arm of this client i though it very complex task. The sheer amount of lines that where place in the skin its staggering, i took me Literally weeks to figure something i felt comfortable as a possible option for the correction into some kind of more readable image.
I choose to keep the original theme of the old tattoo. Skulls, i manege to save some of the biomech art work that i think goes great with the skull elements. Still More sessions to go, but contempt with initial color layering. Will have to wait for heal information to give a better assessment of this tattoo.

Super Duper Neck Tattoos
Super Duper Neck Tattoos

The neck is perhaps one of the most visible parts of the entire human body – Despite wearing clothes, it is still completely exposed to many. Both men and women decorate their necks with fancy jewelry and trinkets, including necklaces, so their necks look elegant and gorgeous. But sometimes, these kinds of necklaces could be a bit pricey, and even look awkward on several…
