HELLO ALL! welcome to another year of selfshiptober. i've noticed this is pretty much the 'official' selfship tober event now, which honestly warms my heart! i love seeing what this wonderful community does with my prompts :)

this year, i'm doing things a little differently. EACH DAY HAS TWO PROMPTS ASSIGNED TO IT. the first set is SHIPPY, while the second set is SPOOKY. you may either COMBINE THE TWO PROMPTS TOGETHER or CHOOSE ONE OF THE PROMPTS. the spooky prompts are a bit on the grittier side and probably won't appeal to most, so if you'd like to only use the first set of prompts and completely ignore the second, be my guest! on the other hand, if you prefer the gritter prompts, you can only use the second set of prompts, you can do that too! if you want an extra challenge, you can create a piece that incorporates both of the day's prompts. you can also change your approach depending on how you feel that day!

there are no hard rules for this. YOU CAN START WORKING ON THIS CHALLENGE EARLY, but i encourage you to wait until october to post anything. YOU CAN ALSO CONTINUING WORKING ON IT AFTER OCTOBER ENDS! you can drag this shit out into december for all i care. just DON'T OVERWORK YOURSELF PLEASE.

Here are some additional ideas that you can use as inspiration for each day's themes! You don't need to follow these prompts at all, but feel free to jump off of these ideas.

Day 1: Sunday, October 27:

Horror AU: Make an AU of your favorite horror movie, show, video game, or book. Feature Mike and Will as the villains, or as the final ones standing.

Demo Creatures: Demogorgans, Demodogs, and Demobats, oh my! Revisit our favorite creatures from the Upside Down. Will Dustin’s beloved D’Artagnan make a reappearance? Or create a brand new kind of Demo Creature!

Summon: Will the Wise and the brave paladin Michael are summoned to complete a quest! Or maybe at a spooky sleepover, Mike and Will accidentally summon a demon.

Day 2: Monday, October 28:

Masquerade: Will kisses someone handsome at the masquerade ball, but they had a mask on - was it Mike or someone else? The party shows up to the ball to have a good time, but are surrounded by enemies in masks. Hidden identities, lots of dancing, and a raucous good time!

Turn it Upside Down: Explore the Upside Down, whatever that means to you! Will and Mike go through a gate into the Upside Down, or flip the whole ship on its head: Willow and Michelle around Halloween, underexplored AU’s, flipped ship dynamics. Go crazy with it.

Spell: Enchantments, curses, and magic. Has Hawkins been placed under a spell this Halloween? Will the Wise casts a spell, or has to undo one.

Day 3: Tuesday, October 29:

Graveyard & Zombies: Buried bodies, graveyard shifts, and ghosts. Will and Mike work at the graveyard and have to stop an undead army from rising, or maybe that’s just where they share their first kiss. The “Zombie Boy” nickname still stings Will when it’s thrown around at school, or maybe not so much after Mike fights their bullies.

Young Byler & Old Byler: What did Mike and Will get up to on their first, second, third Halloween together? How do Mike and Will celebrate Halloween once in college, or in their 20s, 30s, 40s, or 50s? How are they spending Halloween in 2024?

Haunt: What still haunts Mike and Will all these years later? Mike searches for Will who is haunting him while still stuck in the Upside Down. Mike and Will bravely face the Hawkins Haunted House, or move into an actual haunted house as adults.

Day 4: Wednesday, October 30:

Pumpkins & Skeletons: Will and Mike carve pumpkins together, make a pumpkin pie, or investigate the mystery of the rotten pumpkin fields in Hawkins. The party fights against skeletons come to life, or a mystery in Hawkins begins when an unlikely skeleton is found.

The Party: Any and all Party Halloween shenanigans! Explore party dynamics during the spooky season, from pranks to trick or treating. What was the party’s first Halloween together like? The party attends or hosts a Halloween party.

Transform: Transformations of any kind! Werewolves, vampires, Frankenstein, or just the kind of transformation that happens when you are stuck in the Upside Down for a week.

Day 5: Thursday, October 31:

Costume Contest: The party is going all out for costumes this year! Or is it just an AU? Dress Mike and Will up in historical clothes, clothes from your other favorite fandom, or anything else! No matter what, Mike and Will are dressed to impress this year.

Trick or Treat, Freak: A perfect day to appreciate our beloved season 2 Halloween episode. Ghostbusters, Max Mayfield has joined the party, Will sees a shadow in the sky. Crazy together.

Sweet: What’s Halloween without candy? Mike and Will share their favorite candies, or maybe they’re just being extra sweet to each other this Halloween.

Day 6: Friday, November 1:

Movie Night: Whether it’s the whole party or just Will and Mike, at the movie theater or just hanging out in the basement: Byler is cozied up and watching their favorite Halloween movie. Or, what if the party is making an amateur horror flick?

Hawkins Lab: What goes on there, and how are Will and Mike involved? Mad scientists, dangerous experiments, and kids with powers.

Fire: Bonfires to keep our boys warm on a chilly October night, the fire under a wizard’s cauldron, Will the Wise casts Fireball, or a dark night lit only by candlelight.

Day 7: Saturday, November 2:

Fortune Telling: Look into the crystal ball and tell me what you see! Will or Mike get their fortune read and things go awry! Horoscopes, tarot reading, palm reading, tea leaves: does knowing the future make things easier, or so much worse?

Season 5 Era: Time to daydream about our season 5 era! Speculate about what spooky things will happen based on the behind the scenes pictures. What does the next Halloween after season 4 look like for Mike and Will? Is there still time to trick or treat when the world is ending?

Shiver: “He’s right behind me, isn’t he?” What has Mike and Will shivering with fright: a supernatural creature, something ancient and mysterious, or a strange deadly virus that has the whole town shivering? Mike and Will get trapped somewhere cold. Will insists that “he likes it cold.” Or maybe there’s just a chill in the air - it is autumn after all.

Second, it gave her the perfect excuse to throw a massive party. Scheduled for July 31st at her sprawling estate, the event was open to all the sixth- and seventh-year students. She dubbed it the “Patronus Party,” and it was set to be the social highlight of the summer—provided you could produce a corporeal Patronus.

Simon hadn’t been surprised when Kyle said he invited someone to drinks. He had been surprised to see a woman step through the door. What surprised him was not the fact Kyle had invited a woman but that Kyle had invited a normal woman. He attracted beauties the world over. Simon thought back to a day the week before when Kyle had trapped him into listening to a rant.

Simon has watched his sergeant rant and pace for going on ten un-hyperbolic minutes. Kyle had never been one Simon would choose for having woman troubles.

“I bring her flowers and she gives them away!” He is spinning to pace back the other way.

“Does she like flowers?” Simon can’t keep his thoughts to himself any longer.

Kyle stops, foot falling heavy onto the concrete masquerading as carpet on base. He looks at his L.T., incredulous.

“Women like flowers, Simon.”

Simon would have punched the man square in his pretty face if it didn’t require standing. He had sustained a back injury on their last job and had been relegated to desk duty and PT.

“I’m not asking if ‘women’ like flowers Kyle.” Simon failed to keep the snark from the word women as he put air quotes around it. “I’m asking if your bird likes flowers.”

Kyle’s teeth snapped shut as he stared at his L.T. Simon took pity on the younger man.

“I know your mum and sister like flowers. What do they like?”

“Orchid and Sunflowers.” Kyle straightened, tucking one hand into the collar of his shirt in lieu of a tack vest.

“And your bird?”

“She���s not my bird,” he mutters to the floor.

“But you want her to be. Quit treating the woman who bests you in philosophical discussions like the ones who throw themselves at you and would take any crumb of affection that might fall into their mouths. She doesn’t sound like the type to accept scraps.”

Kyle’s nose scrunch gave away the depth of his emotions.

“And what if she doesn’t like me after?”

“After?” Simon prompted.

“After she knows that I am not a good man?” The brusque quality of his voice does not mask the fear, pain, rejection there.

Wincing, Simon stood with back stiff and straight.

“Kyle.” He waited until the man looked up from his boots. “If she’s worth having around at all she’s worth being a friend.”

Simon recoils from the pain when he lifts a foot. Damn. He was getting too old for this life.

“If you meet her would you tell me what you think?”

Introductions pulled him back from the edge of his memories. Kyle had passed your name around as they sat in a booth at a bar that looked like any number of them on this street. His arm is stretched across the back of your chair, possessive. You lean forward, elbows on the table to avoid touching him. Simon didn’t plan on watching you to inform Kyle of his thoughts but the attentive distance you kept drew his interest.

“This is Soap, and this is Ghost,” Kyle pointed to each man in turn.

Johnny held his hand out for you to shake with his signature woman-eating grin.

“Call me Johnny.”

“Simon,” he nods at you instead of offering his hand.

The side eye you send Kyle speaks of familiarity and a solid foundation to your friendship.

“So they do have normal names.”

Kyle cracks with laughter. “I never said they didn’t. Can’t help that you assumed.”

You stick your tongue out at him before turning back to Johnny and Simon. Kyle slips off to grab drinks from the bar. Credit where credit is due, you are interesting and pull everyone into a discussion. Simon even shares his opinions on whether or not trees have domesticated humans, he does not think they have.

When drinks, beers for the guys, are running low a round of rock, paper, scissors sends Kyle to the bar and Johnny nips off to the john to relieve himself.

A deep frustrated sad sigh from Kyle’s bird has Simon looking over at you.

“How copy?”

You glance up at him, to Kyle with a beautiful woman dripping off his arm at the bar, and then turn back to the small drink in your hand, swirling the red-tinged liquid. You had been nursing the single drink the entire night.

“He’s too damn pretty for my good.”

Humming in agreement Simon thought of Johnny.

“He’s loyal though,” he sips his beer to give himself a moment to grab more words. “Kyle has walked through hell for us. He would do more than that for you.”

A snort escapes from you. Simon catches your look of self-derision.

“Kyle wouldn’t want someone like me. I’m a good friend, not a hot fuck.” You sip your drink as if to stop the flow of words.

“Friendships are the best basis for more. He only talks about three women at work. His mum, his sister, and you.”

You would have replied, brows pulled together as if looped together with a stitch tugged taut, but Johnny threw his body onto the bench next to you.

“Lass there are so many men looking for someone to take home. Interested in playing the field?” Johnny waggled his eyebrows in your direction before throwing a wink at Simon.

The bark of laughter from you has both men returning their gazes to you.

“The last time I took a man home from the bar he stayed the night and then hit on my supermodel hot roommates all breakfast. I’m not looking for a repeat of being the ugly step-sister.”

Kyle returns to the table, catching your words’ tail end. Before he can say anything you smile up at him and tap Johnny on the arm.

“I’m gonna head on home.”

Johnny stands and offers you a hand you take as you pull yourself across the bench seat until you can twist to escape.

“Already? You’ve hardly touched your drink?” Kyle gestures to your half-full glass.

Simon watches, eyes moving like he watched a match at Wimbledon.

“I don’t drink much to begin with.”

“I barely got to talk to you.” The sadness in his eyes is clear to Simon, the innumerable missions, plane chats, exfil being delayed times teaching him what that ache looked like on his sergeant.

You must not see it.

“That’s okay, we talk all the time. It was nice to meet some of your teammates though,” you toss a smile to Johnny who returns the gesture. “Good luck with whoever you end up going home with tonight.”

A wave to Simon, a nod to Kyle and you are off. Weaving through the tables and returning the goodbyes from the bar staff. Simon and Johnny watch you go, your absence absorbed by the hum of conversation filling the bar.

Kyle jerks forward when Johnny slaps him on the shoulder.

“I like her; now if she ever gives you a shot don’t fuck it up,” the Scot laughed and settled back into the booth.

When Kyle sits it is with folded arms spread across the table and his nose kissing the wood.

Finishing his beer Simon sets it softly on the table.

“You really like her.”

It is not a question.

“I want my mom to meet her.”

The look of shock on Johnny’s face as it swung to look at him would be comical if Simon didn’t also understand the gravity of that statement.

“Damn Kyle, you got it bad.”

Kyle’s response was to thump his head on the table three times, sit up straight, finish the abandoned drink, and then slam his own.

“I’m going home.”

Simon struggled to stand and Johnny left the booth behind him, hand heated against his shoulder blade. Johnny took care of paying for everyone’s drinks and met them at the door.

Kyle ignored any heated look sent his way by hopeful women, head down and shoulders crunched. Simon had no words of advice for this; he also yearned with no recourse.

Gallavich Masquerade 2024

Let's have a New Year's Masquerade Ball!

This time it'll be a mixed one, for fic writers and fanartists! The fanworks will be revealed on December 31st and people will have up to January 31st to cast their votes.

As you now know, in a Masquerade, creators (fic authors and fanartists) will produce their works anonymously. These fanworks will all be revealed at the same time on December 31st - our New Year's Masquerade Ball! - and fans (previously called readers and admirers) will have a month to attempt to guess who's behind each mask, that is, who made what. Creators are encouraged to try to fool everyone!

Details after the read more, but don't forget to please spread the word. This will be fun!

Requirements

All fics must have between 2,000 and 5,000 words. For art, there are no requirements. (Needless to say, AI "works" are not allowed.)

No theme is required or forbidden, but, as this is an event in which the goal is to have as many people checking out our work as possible, fanworks in niche categories are not advised. Regardless of what you do, please tag accordingly.

I don't know what to write/draw about!

You can get inspiration from anything you want. It can be canon-compliant, canon-divergent, after the show ended, AU...

But, if you still need some ideas, you can find some here, here or here (not to mention @callivich always has tons of prompts lists).

Sign-ups

Signing-up is required and can be done here. For this event, sign-ups can be done up to the time of posting. Unlike other events, this is one where you will need to sign-up only at the end, after the fanwork is done. You'll be required to add your AO3 username and the title of your fanwork.

What if I don't have an AO3 account?

Then I'm very sorry, but in this case, you won't be able to participate (as a creator). For this event, having an AO3 account is mandatory so that you can post in the collection. That being said, a lot of people have AO3 invites, so ask right now and someone may be able to send you one.

Posting

Posting will be done on AO3 and AO3 only! This is because the Masquerade Collection will be unrevealed and anonymous. All posting must be done until December 29th. On December 31st, all fics will be revealed and available for the readers. (The two days different is to ensure that everyone has posted before I reveal them.) The fanworks will remain anonymous until January 31st, when the game ends. (Please take note that this may be extended if there are a large number of fics). On February 1st, the authors' identities will be disclosed (and your fic will appear under your account just like any other fic).

As an creator, all you have to do is, when posting on AO3, choose to do it under the Gallavich Masquerade 2024 Collection (as in the picture below). I'll take care of the rest. It's important to do so when posting and not after, or it won't work. You can go to My Works > Works in Collections to confirm that it worked.

Voting

Voting will be done via a new form, which will be disclosed only after the fanworks are posted. All titles will be displayed and fans will chose from a menu who they think the creator is. This time, voting is mandatory in all three guesses. If you don't know who to vote for or if you haven't had a chance to read a fic, for example, just take a guess. Also, you might as well guess three different creators to increase your chances, even if you think you're sure who it is.

Points

There are two ways of winning this game, as a creator and as a fan.

Creators are awarded 1 point for each person who correctly guesses their fic/fanart on the first try, 2 for correct second guesses, 3 for correct third guesses and 7 points for each person who wrongly guesses it (that is, matches three different creators to your fanwork). That's right, you get more points if you're actually able to deceive everyone.

Fans are awarded 5 points for each fanwork they guess correctly on the first guess, 3 for each correct second guess and 1 for each correct third guess (obviously the points are only awarded once, so there's no need to guess the same work more than once). No points are being deducted this time.

Creators can also be fans, so they have twice the chance of winning. There will be separate winners for artists and writers.

Prizes

Winners will get boasting rights! XD Plus, of course, a special post for them.

If anyone would like to make fanworks for the winners (like art for the winning writers, fics for the winning artists, edits, whatever), please let me know, that would be super nice!
