World Maritime Day
Connecting markets across the world — from container ships to tankers, this vital industry keeps goods flowing and economies growing.
Don that sailor’s cap and put on those deck shoes because it’s time to learn about and celebrate World Maritime Day!
History of World Maritime Day
Many people do not realize that more than 80% of the world’s global trade is transported through international shipping. That means that most of the consumer goods that enter business and homes all over the world were shipped to get there. As the most affordable and efficient form of transportation for goods, maritime activity continues to be a vital part of the world’s trade industry.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) began its development in 1948 as a specialized agency of the United Nations. Taking some time to get established, the organization then entered into force on March 17, 1958. At its beginning, the IMO had only 21 member states who took part, which is a large contrast to the present day when it now boasts more than 160 members.
The International Maritime Organization focuses on environmental issues, legal issues, safety, maritime efficiency and technical cooperation. They work together to prevent marine pollution from ships, create safety measures to avoid accidents and damage, build more efficiency in shipping,
With the IMO slogan, “Safe, secure and efficient shipping on clean oceans”, members commit to taking care of the natural resources as well as working in cooperation for the safety of everyone. This includes encouraging each member to promote legislation against piracy and other dangerous activity on the sea.
Twenty years after it moved into action, the anniversary of the IMO was celebrated as the first World Maritime Day in March of 1978. Celebrated annually after that, eventually the day was moved to the end of September, usually celebrated on the last Thursday.
Established by the United Nations in 1978, World Maritime Day is meant to raise awareness about the importance of the shipping industry and the vital contribution it makes to places all over the globe.
Each year World Maritime Day has its own theme that is meant to encourage and motivate those within the shipping industry as well as offering opportunities to tell others about it. Past themes have included:
Seafarers: at the core of shipping’s future
Sustainable shipping for a sustainable planet
Empowering Women in the maritime community
Our Heritage: better shipping for a better future
Now it’s time to join in on the celebrations and take part in appreciating those in the shipping industry for World Maritime Day!
How to Celebrate World Maritime Day
Wondering how to celebrate World Maritime Day? Try out some of these ideas for enjoying and paying heed to this important day:
Learn More About the Shipping Industry
Those who know a seafarer or sailor should certainly ask them to share various stories about their adventures and escapades on the sea. If there’s no one nearby to meet with in person, head to the library or hop onto the internet to do some research to understand maritime industries a bit better.
Visit a Port or Maritime Museum
Living by the water can be delightful for a number of reasons and the accessibility to ships and maritime museums is an important one. Many port cities offer views of old ships that have been rescued and put on display for visitors to see. Others might offer guided tours with interesting information to learn about ships and boats first hand.
Maritime museums can be found in various port cities all over the world, including Bath, England; Amsterdam, Netherlands; Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; Busan, South Korea; and Reykjavik, Iceland.
Watch a Film About Seafarers
One interesting way to celebrate World Maritime Day might be to watch an action or adventure film around the theme of sailors and seafarers. Check out some of these interesting tales of the sea:
The Bounty (1984). Starring Anthony Hopkins and Mel Gibson, this movie tells the story of a crew that gets tired of their captain’s harshness and a mutiny arises on the HMS Bounty. It’s based on the true story of a British sea vessel from 1789.
Master and Commander:The Far Side of the World (2003). Russell Crowe offers a stunning performance in this epic film about the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars. Crowe’s character, Captain Jack Aubrey, and his crew are sent to hunt down a French vessel that is near the South American coast.
The Poseidon Adventure (1972). This classic film tells the story of a passenger ship that is on her way to being retired when it is hit by a tidal wave, turning everything upside down. The hero of the film is Reverend Scott, played by Gene Hackman, who leads the passengers to try to find safety. This film has an all-star, ensemble cast with five different Oscar winners.
Captain Phillips (2009). Telling the true tale of a merchant mariner who was taken hostage by Somali pirates, this film stars Tom Hanks as the title character who makes a brave effort to save his crew.
Give a Little Nod to the Sea
Whether it’s visiting an aquarium, watching an old movie about seafarers or enjoying a lunch of fish and chips, World Maritime Day is all about raising awareness. Teachers can have a lesson about the sea at school, assign a reading of Moby Dick, or have students write an essay about the importance of sea travel and trade.
Perhaps it would be fun to don a sailor’s cap for work and then explain about World Maritime Day when people inquire about it, raising awareness for the day. Whatever the activity, take time to honor the work that takes place on the international seas!
Take a Boat Ride
Enjoy a little taste of life at sea by taking a ride on a boat in honor of World Maritime Day. Although it’s more likely for a person to be able to secure passage on a cruise ship or a local tour boat rather than a shipping vessel, it would still be a fun way to enjoy being on the water.

Antici-pation
Warnings: captivity, torture, threatening behavior, restraints, falling from a great height, broken bones, unconsciousness
Whumpee struggled in the chair they were strapped in to. Whumper had come in, maniacal smile on their face. And Whumpee knew that meant only pain for them.
Pain they had endured for countless hours. Pain that had marked their body. Pain that had lingered in their mind. Pain they could not endure any longer.
They could only imagine what pain awaited them at Whumper’s hand now. They could only anticipate that it would not be good.
“Ahhh, my little Whumpee. How are you?”
“Please,” Whumpee begged, “please. I won’t tell anyone. Just let me go.”
Whumper tutted. “Shouldn’t you be happy, Whumpee? You are the one who found me. Who almost caught me. And you’ll be my greatest work.” They stopped short of the window.
“Greatest work?” Whumpee swallowed. They did not like the sound of that. It did not bode well for them.
Whumper carefully cranked the window open, pulling Whumpee’s chair to the sill. “Greatest work, yes. You will be beautiful, Whumpee. Everyone will be in awe of your beauty.”
Whumpee began to tremble as Whumper tilted their chair over the edge. “Please!”
Whumper smiled as they leaned in close and whispered, “With pleasure.” And they shoved Whumpee’s chair out the window.
Whumpee’s scream echoed through the clearing as they fell the two stories to the ground. Their scream cut off as they hit the ground and the chair broke beneath them. Pain exploded everywhere in their body. They had heard the sound of bones cracking and crunching as they landed. Heard the sound of Whumper’s laughter from the window. Heard the sound of the of birds chirping in the clearing surrounding the house.
And then they knew no more.

Smaugust Day 26: Colossus
I’ve met very few bold enough to try and tame a dragon, much less the utter madness I witnessed when I visited the city of Wildeback. In order to avoid the harsh monsters below, they seem to have tamed and built their settlement on the back of a truly massive beast of a dragon. It seems to be one of a kind, and the towns folk were not very keen in sharing their process. I’ll have to further investigate another time.

Tattoos and Sexy Pirates
A/N: Today’s prompt and story idea provided by @mashmaiden. As usual, I flipped the idea a little bit from the original. Set in the last couple of seasons.
***
Kensi sighed as she walked into the airport terminal, dragging her luggage behind her, a carryon bag hung over her right shoulder. After a month away for a series of specialized trainings, she was glad to be back home. Sure, she’d learned a lot, and more importantly, increased her job security, but hopefully this would be the last long trip for a while.
As much as Kensi appreciated the opportunity, she’d missed working with the team, missed the warmth and familiarity of LA, and most importantly, missed Deeks. They’d both been so busy most days that they only managed short calls, or texts if they were lucky.
Speaking of Deeks, he had arranged to pick her up today. Kensi glanced around the terminal, anticipation running through her as she searched for his familiar frame and blond hair.
Deeks saw her first, stepping forward, and Kensi barely recognized him. “Kensi, I’m so glad you’re back home,” he said, enveloping her in a tight hug. He picked her up, twirling her around a few times.
When he set her down Kensi could only gape for several seconds.
“Oh my god, baby, what did you do?!” she gasped, pressing her hands over her mouth. She walked around him in a slow circle, taking in his appearance in disbelief. Hair longer and pulled back with a hair band, an earring—she reached out to touch a flower within a skull on his forearm, but dropped her hand at the last moment.
She’d known he was feeling a little weird about his age the last couple years, but she didn’t think that it was this bad.
Deeks watched her with a raised eyebrow and a look of bemusement.
Ok, I was expecting a little bit more of a warm welcome,” he drawled.
“Deeks, you got tattoos while I was gone. What am I supposed to say? I was only gone for a few weeks. If you were feeling this bad, you should have called me.” She inhaled deeply, realizing she was almost shouting when Deeks’ eyes widened. Then she caught sight of the tattoos again, which covered him from bicep to wrist. Something red peaked out from the collar of his t-shirt.
Oh god.
“Kens, what the hell are you talking about? I got called in on a joint undercover job the day after you left. Didn’t you get my text?”
“Yeah, you said you were going undercover, but I thought it was something simple. So this is…?”
“Oh babe, I’m sorry. Yeah, they’re just temporary,” he said, running his finger over a spider near his elbow. “I had to look the part of a longtime gang member.”
“So naturally you let your hair grow out, got fake tattoos, and a fake earring.”
He fingered the small hoop in his left ear and cleared his throat. “Uh, actually, this is real.”
Kensi’s mouth fell open, and he quickly rushed to explain.
“Listen, it had to be believable, and I figured just getting one piercing would be a lot easier than having to deal with one that could fall off at any moment. I’ve had that happen before, and believe me, it kind of ruins the vibe.”
“Ok, I can deal with an earring,” Kensi decided, pinching them bridge of her nose between her index finger and thumb. “I’m sorry I basically attacked you. That wasn’t the best greeting ever.”
“It’s ok. I probably should have warned you,” he said with a shrug. Then he grinned. “I surprised Sam too.”
“Now that I would have loved to see.” She kissed Deeks’ cheek, looping her arm through his, and they started making their way to the exit. “How was your undercover? Sounds like it was kind of dangerous.”
“Things got a little tricky. But I was spectacular as usual, and everything ran fairly smoothly.”
“Oh, I bet you were.”
He chuckled softly, drawing her closer. “What about you? How were your classes?” he asked.
“Pretty amazing. But also really long.” She paused, and added more softly. “I’m glad to be back.”
Deeks’ response was another, lingering kiss that probably tested the boundaries of propriety for their current location.
“So, what were you talking about me feeling bad before?”
Kensi flushed, suddenly feeling embarrassed about her massive leap.
“Oh, well you know, recently you’ve been a little down about your hair, and aging and—”
“You thought this was the result of a mid-life crisis,” Deeks surmised with a raised eyebrow.
“Not because I think you’re actually middle-aged,” she defended herself quickly. “But kind of.”
“Well rest assured, I am feeling very secure about myself right now, so you don’t have to worry about me doing anything crazy.”
“Good. Speaking of crazy, how long before these wear off?” Kensi poked a surprisingly accurate rendition of a dagger.
“Uh, about three weeks, give or take,” he answered. Kensi closed her eyes, holding back a groan. “We didn’t know how long I’d be under so we had to make sure they’d last a while.”
“Right. We’re going to need to buy you more long sleeve shirts,” Kensi said.
“Ok, but I think I might keep my hair this way for a while. And the earring.
I’ll be like a sexy pirate.”
Kensi inclined her head, considering.
“Oddly enough, I don’t completely hate that idea,” she decided.

Audubon Day
We greatly admire people working towards conservation activities and this factors into our celebrations of Audubon Day on April 26 each year. Held to commemorate the birth of John James Audubon, a brilliant illustrator, conservationist, ornithologist, and naturalist, this day also recognizes the crucial work done by The National Audubon Society.
WHEN IS AUDUBON DAY 2024?
John James Audubon’s brilliant work and legacy are celebrated on Audubon Day on April 26.
HISTORY OF AUDUBON DAY
This day is celebrated in honor of (and marks the birth of) John James Audubon, a French-American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter who was well-known for his extensive studies on American birds and their habitats. Born in Saint Domingue (now Haiti), Audubon was raised in France by his father and stepmother. He began studying and drawing birds after moving to America, continuing to do so even as he moved to Kentucky with his wife, Lucy. He began delving deeper into his hobby of bird illustrations after the store that he owned went bankrupt, even sailing down the Mississippi River on a flatboat to find new birds to paint. He was so successful that he took his work to England and published it there. This work, Audubon’s greatest work, “The Birds of America,” is now widely considered as one of the most noteworthy examples of wildlife illustration. It set the tone for future wildlife illustrations; even today, artists are measured against this book’s standards.
Years after Audubon’s death on January 27, 1851, one of Audubon’s wife’s students, George Bird Grinnell, went on to co-found the National Audubon Society in John Audubon’s memory. This society promotes and protects the habitats that support the world’s birds, and also sponsors National Audubon Day. Located in the United States, this society is one of the oldest such organizations in the world. Today, there are many branches of the National Audubon Society all over the U.S., connecting John Audubon’s name to bird conservation forever.

AUDUBON DAY FAQS
Is Audubon reliable?
The National Audubon Society emphasizes science as their basis for sound policy and action, which shows they are reliable and effective.
What is the bird society called?
National Audubon Society. Their official website states, “The National Audubon Society protects birds and the places they need, today and tomorrow, throughout the Americas using science, advocacy, education, and on-the-ground conservation. We protect birds and the places they need.”
Who helped found the Audubon Society?
John Muir, George Bird Grinnell, T. Gilbert Pearson, are the founders of the National Audubon Society.
HOW TO CELEBRATE AUDUBON DAY
Go bird watching: Bird watching is a very fun pastime enjoyed by around 45 million people, as per data from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Step outside for a quick (and safe) walk and observe the birds around you. You can look up details of birds you don’t recognize on the Audubon website. You can even take the fun one step further by learning about their names, habitats, and migration patterns.
Create your own bird-friendly space: Have some space in your backyard? Go ahead and design your own bird-friendly locale with native shrubs, trees, pedestal birdbaths, and more. You can hang bird feeders that you've created from plastic bottles, coffee cans, or even milk jugs for a better environmental impact. If you want to try your hand at more professional-type bird feeders, there are various woodworking tutorials online for making such feeders.
Draw, paint, and sketch birds; By all accounts, John Audubon loved illustrating birds. Take a feather out of his book and immortalize your neighborhood birds too. Grab a pencil and notebook and head to your bird-friendly backyard to draw the birds you see. Add in pops of color using paint or colored crayons.
FUN FACTS ABOUT AUDUBON DAY
Audubon introduced the concept of bird banding to Americas: The process of attaching a small tag to the wing of wild birds to make identification easier was first introduced by Audubon in North America.
His book is worth A LOT! In 2010, the first edition of Audubon's book, “The Birds of America,” sold in London for a whopping $11 million.
Audubon was an exceptional taxidermist. So he could sketch birds, then, if they died, prepare, stuff, and mount them too.
You might recognize a particular student of his: Famous naturalist, geologist, and biologist Charles Darwin sat in on one of Audubon's demonstrations of his methods, as a student.
Audubon made his money selling animal skins. A noted hunter, Audubon's practice of selling animal skins was his primary source of income for much of his life and even funded the printing of his book, “The Birds of America.”
WHY WE LOVE AUDUBON DAY
It brings us closer to nature: Many of us live in concrete jungles where the only brush of nature is a faraway tree, a kitchen garden, or a small shrub. Observing Audubon day brings us closer to nature and to what it means to be human in this world.
We can give back to the environment: The climate crisis reminds us that most of us aren't that mindful when it comes to nature or conservation. Perhaps learning about Audubon's conservation attempts and the Audubon Society's efforts to study and help birds and their habitat will inspire us to make more hands-on contributions, starting by simply being more bird-friendly.
We make some feathered friends: Who says no to making more friends? Only this time, we're making friends with some feathered buddies. All our conservation attempts, creating bird-friendly spaces, and even simply increasing our awareness bring us one step closer to making birdie friends and embracing Mother Nature.
