also the slightly shaky cam in the last scene as he watches havers wave and fade away i didn't even notice until i made the gif but it adds SO MUCH to his emotions at this moment. like taking a shaky breath. him still grieving over it, but learning to suppress that emotion from a life+death time of experience, so it only comes out as a shiver. ben wilbond truly put so much thought into this character; the captain is the Most Character to ever Character

edit: also just another parallel I noticed but his face is lit up similarly??? half light/half dark tenebrism that subtextually calls back to this scene of choice??? kitty in the shadows because she chose selfishly, the cap in the end a mix of both to reflect the nuance and complexity in his decision??? one shadowed by sunlight the other by the moon, present and memory, action and reflection, how one is affected by another, etc etc

the shadowhunter chronicles by cassandra clare is the only book universe that has ever truly made me FEEL. don’t get me wrong, i love many other fantasies and read other authors, but cassandra clare has held my attention for 17+ books and there has never been a time where i have felt bored, unsatisfied, or wanted to pick up something else instead.

I was watching this lovely, bittersweet edit highlighting the short, tragic friendship between Celebrimbor and Elrond as they're portrayed in the Rings of Power, and it got me reflecting (as many of us have) on the prophesy, "My father foresaw that one day Celebrimbor's life would be in my hands" and how it's too bad there wasn't anything that felt like a weighty resolution to that thread. Like, to have a prophesy directly from the foresight of Eärendil that's first mentioned in season one and invented for the show feels so significant to be used merely as a device to compound Elrond's failure, you know? The prophesy works well as foreshadowing and elevates the tragic impact of Elrond's role as commander and his inability to defend Eregion, but that feels so distant to the idiom "life in his hands." Especially since Elrond isn't even in sight of Celebrimbor's death, so how could his life really be so directly in his hands--

IT'S THE RING.

THE RINGS.

Elrond's only direct acts related to "saving" Celebrimbor on screen is trying to save his records and his city, aka the lore and legacy around him. And that fails. The records are burned, the city is reduced to rubble, the smith's greatest achievements are corrupted and certainly going to be twisted further to some evil purpose in Sauron's hands.

And Elrond's been so certain that those rings are corrupted, including the elven rings (which for a while are the only rings the Lindon elves know of in the show). But then suddenly those elven rings are all that's left of Celebrimbor's legacy and in the first and last episode of the season they're LITERALLY in Elrond's hands. When he jumps from the cliff trying to keep them from his friends, and when he finally picks one up and uses it for good--for its intended, healing purpose. I mean, Elrond future lore master has Celebrimbro's life story in his hands. He has Celebrimbor's life's work in his hands, and all the parts of himself and his craft he poured into those rings.

And one day Elrond will literally be one of the bearers and wielders of Celebrimbor's life work and legacy. Yeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaahhh==

"His life in his hands" indeed.

it's not something I've written but it is fascinating to think about if Val and Alastor were hanging out with Vox at the same time before things went bad with Alastor in the past. Mostly because Val is like, 95% exactly Alastor's (friend) type. Pulling traits from both Rosie and Mimzy, he likes people who are very Loud and a Lot and very confident in themselves and their personality/appearance, who he can have fun nights out and bitchy gossip sessions with, plus he and Val have a decent amount of experience overlap re: being nonwhite and very likely from disadvantaged backgrounds, but affecting upper-class mannerisms, being deeply entertained by Vox (and if I can include headcanon, they were both mama's boys).

Really the only obstacles are:

val being the Sex Guy who does certain crimes Alastor is stated to really not like, but who knows how common that was back when/if Alastor would necessarily know about it

more a reason to break it off, but Val actually being into Vox and becoming his official partner/Val's Stand By My Man loyalty requiring him to dislike Alastor by default

val not being a woman (but then again, Alastor WAS hanging out with at least one guy back then!)

anyway my conclusion is just i can't wait to see them actually interact at some point, bc with how they've acted so far (Val seeming weirdly unbothered about the Alastor feud despite acknowledging he's sorta part of it, Alastor paying him a compliment along with Velvette by calling them the source of Vox's power) I feel like it's weirdly possible for them to be amicably indifferent to each other, even if they weren't technically friends in the past.
