Miss Margaret: "Children, I want you to be able to make a small report this weekend on what you like most about Fawcett, and you can use all the visual media you need to accompany it."

Billy doesn't know exactly how to start, but he takes a recorder that one of the kids from the orphanage gave him and goes out for a walk.

"Hi, I'm Billy Batson. I'm eleven years old and this is my report..."

"What I like most... What I like most about Fawcett... There are many things, but I like taking the metro, it has a great view. I'll get off at the last station to see the zoo..."

"I like the zoo the most. Kids get in for free and I can see the tiger... It's orange and has black spots..."

"Personal note: Yesterday Tawky Tawny talked to me. I need to make sure I'm not going crazy."

"As I was saying, I really like coming here whenever I can. The caretakers already know me and let me feed the penguins with a lot of supervision."

"Besides the zoo, there's the old Zantini bakery. They're very kind and whenever I stay a bit longer they tell me a story about when they arrived in America as newlyweds. My friend Madison took me to see it many times while she lived in the city. With her dad's radio and binoculars, we could feel like we were inside..."

BILLY BATSON WEEK 2025

It’s that time of the year again! 2025 marks the 85th Anniversary of Billy Batson as Captain Marvel debuting in Whiz Comics #2, the first official cover-dated issue released February 1940.*

A brief history In December of 1939, children at newsstands were picking up a particular issue with the cover of a flying man dressed in red, effortlessly lifting a car overhead. Bill Parker, senior editor at Fawcett Comics during this time, had developed a new kind of superhero: Billy Batson is a young orphan boy who transforms into a powerful champion named Captain Marvel at the drop of the word “SHAZAM!” He fights crime against notable villains together with a memorable cast of heroes he calls “family.”

A few years past their heyday, Fawcett Publications endured troubling legal problems that put their sales in jeopardy, eventually settling their dragging copyright case with National Comics Publications (predecessor of modern-day DC Comics) and putting Captain Marvel to rest indefinitely. The Captain’s return to comics happened in late 1972 under DC Comics, a run which the original artist C.C. Beck had worked on for only a year. Ever since, Billy Batson and his counterpart have appeared in many different iterations in many different comics, one of the only memories still enduring from a time already passed.

This year’s overall theme is NOSTALGIA. Take this as you might, for however you interpret nostalgia—perhaps a reflection on your own personal narrative with Billy Batson, or an exploration between him and his own massive history, be it in-universe or with real life pop culture. You might even disregard the day-to-day prompts below and dedicate yourself to nostalgia thematically for the entire week! How you’d like to work with it is up to you.

Day 1 ☆ February 23, 2025 HOLY HISTORAMA

The Historama, similar to a crystal ball, is described as Shazam the Wizard’s “super-television screen,” of which he may use to see the past, present, and future. In later iterations, it presents itself as a book or object that displays any scene through time and, possibly, space. On this day, you might center the Historama itself, or explore any scenes of Billy’s history from any time or place.

Day 2 ☆ February 24, 2025 THE BOY OF ARTHURIAN LEGEND

Bill Parker, when asked to describe his inspiration for Captain Marvel, once said, “Specifically I got it from the Stories of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, stories with which I had been familiar and read as a child.”

At its core, the story of Billy Batson as Captain Marvel was a story about old wizards, spells, myths, and secrets—elements which children center their greatest fantasies and perhaps still carry with them throughout adulthood. Use this day to commemorate Billy Batson as a fulfilled fantasy, maybe as a knight facing dragons in some faraway world or a space-wandering sailor, the wildest childhood dream come true.

Day 3 ☆ February 25, 2025 SWEET HOME FAWCETT

This prompt is simply Fawcett: Fawcett Comics and their previous publications, possibly outside of Captain Marvel and friends, or Fawcett the city as depicted in the DC Comics iterations, home base of Billy and Captain Marvel.

Day 4 ☆ February 26, 2025 RETURN OF THE CHAMPION

Across his storied history, Captain Marvel has faced many setbacks in his journey back to comic book stands: previous lawsuits and settlements, harried DC Comics events, logistical decisions made behind closed doors. However many times he’s put on the back burner, Captain Marvel still manages to return in a triumph. We will see him again in fleeting appearances, celebrated homecomings, maybe a long-awaited reunion...

Day 5 ☆ February 27, 2025 THE WORLD HE LIVES IN

It is of note that, while Fawcett Comics held onto its hero as long as they could for the first few years, the DC Comics universe is where Billy and the Captain have held their home—for over fifty consecutive years. Use this as a day to reflect on Billy’s past DC universe adventures, from teams he’s been on to events he’s partaken in.

Day 6 ☆ February 28, 2025 A MARVELOUS FAMILY

Billy Batson’s not the only one with a candle to blow. Mary Marvel debuted in 1942, while Captain Marvel Junior had appeared much earlier, in 1941. Their contributions to the stories of Captain Marvel have been monumental in immortalizing his place as a beloved hero with weight and history. They are also deeply adored by Billy himself. Have this day to celebrate family, for each Marvel Family member who has added to the menagerie over the years, or to simply center Mary and Freddy and their own achievements.

Day 7 ☆ March 1, 2025 HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BILLY

Happy Birthday Billy Batson! Give him a cake. Give him a balloon. Give him a present. Tell him how much you appreciate him. He is eighty-five years old. He looks timeless! Is the secret the amber from the Sivana suspendium?

Shazam: The Orb of Aion

A Shazam fanfiction for @marybatson event Billy Batson week 2025 day 1 Holy Historama.

On the Rock of Eternity, the wizard Shazam watch the Earth using a crystal ball to keep a eye on his champion Billy Batson and his allies. Suddenly, there was a quake in the Rock of Eternity, which was impossible for the wizard Shazam as the Rock of Eternity was in a pocket dimension before he realized that it was a invasion and the wizard quickly send a message to Billy as his champion's old enemy Dr. Sivana come inside the Rock of Eternity with a army.

In Fawcett City, Billy was working on a online news article for the Wiz News when he got the wizard's message inside his mind and Billy realized that he has no time to waste and he shout the magic word, "Shazam!" which a bolt of lighting hit Billy and turn him into a adult man with black hair and wearing a red costume with a white cape and a yellow lighting bolt on the center of his shirt. Billy soon flew off to the Rock of Eternity, while two figures only follow Billy to give him support.

Inside the Rock of Eternity, Dr. Sivana have put the wizard Shazam in chains as he said, "Look at you, wizard. I knew that you were the reason for the Big Cheese's power, and now you are my prisoner. I have a bigger prize in my sight, so do stay around, Shazam." Just then, Billy come inside the Rock of Eternity and he said, "Did someone said my name?" and battle the armies while Dr. Sivana flee deeper inside the Rock of Eternity. Despite his big power, Billy start to find himself overcome by Sivana's army before a black hair teenage boy wearing a blue version of Billy's costume and a brown hair young woman wearing a white version of Billy's costume flew in and the woman said to Billy, "Hey brother, let us help you out." and Billy said, "Mary Marvel! Freddy!" which Freddy, the teenage boy wearing blue, said, "Hey, be careful with the secret identities, Captain! We should not speak our names to the bad guys, remember." After a while, the three heroes defeat Sivana's goons and free Shazam, which Billy ask, "Hey wizard, where did Sivana went?" and the wizard Shazam point to the hallway, "I do fear that Dr. Sivana has retired into the treasure room which hold artifacts given to me by gods for safe keeping."

The group head inside the treasure room where they catch a moment of Dr. Sivana touch a blue orb before he disappear. The wizard said in shock after what they witnesses, "Oh no, Dr. Sivana has use the Historama, the Orb of Aion, the avatar of time, which allow one to see into the past, present, and future. While I don't know how Dr. Sivana knew the spell to do so, I sense he has travel through time to change events in the timeline to allow evil to win. Billy, as my champion, you must follow Sivana and stop what evil plans that he have." and Billy said to the wizard, "I understand, Shazam!" which turn Billy back to his kid form which the wizard comment, "Maybe being in your kid form will allow you to spy on Sivana before you stop his plans, Billy. Your foster siblings Fred and Mary will stay behind to help protect me and deal with any dangers that Sivana's actions has created." The wizard Shazam then use a spell to send Billy after Sivana and the start of a great adventure across time and space.

Billy: Excuse me, sir! Do you know where the great ship-eating whirlwind of the north is!?

Random Sailor: What!?

Billy: Do you know how to get to the northern ship-eater!? I got lost in the storm!"

Random Sailor: What!?

Billy: Never mind! Thanks anyway!

Amidst a fierce storm, their silence makes sense. However, falling through a transdimensional rift linked to a third act? That's beyond comprehension.

After that, he met a guy named Sinbad with a great ship. This ancient world, with its bizarre tales of kings of the seven seas and magical weapons, feels surreal. Magical dungeons with hidden treasures?

The strangest part: everyone believes he's a Magi! A mage of creation who has immense power capable of creating dungeons or destroying countries… Okay, Billy could do that, he can do that, he doesn't plan to do it, but it’s curious that they know what he is capable of without him telling them. It takes a bit of the burden off his shoulders.

Yet, it seems Sinbad wants Billy to stay as Sindria's Magi permanently.

While looking for a way home, he can't help but admire him. He treats Billy as an equal, even without knowing about his big magical transformation.

However, Billy suspects the king is not too keen on helping him return.

Their quest to stop the marine disaster responsible for the typhoon hasn't been very successful.

Sinbad: Billy, any luck!?

Billy: No! The storm is very strong, and people are running for shelter!

Sinbad: We'll try again tomorrow! Let's return to the ship!

The storm that was battering the region only disappears when Billy manages to interact with the glowing butterflies called Rukh and stops the whirlwind causing the problem.

Obviously, they return to Sindria to celebrate. Sinbad's friends and the townspeople celebrate him in a way he knows won't happen at home. He decides to enjoy it.

The days turn into months, and they refine into years. The League takes ten years when they can finally come to rescue him.

Billy: Friends!

Superman: Captain!

Wonder Woman: Brother! Thank Athena you're in one piece. It took us a few weeks to find your location. We feared that something…

Flash: Buddy, you look younger, or is it my imagination?

Billy: Well… it's been a bit more than a week for me…

Superman: You can tell us at home. The portal won't last long.

The now twenty-year-old man looks back. It is not his childhood that frames his gaze; he left that place long ago. But he has waited for this moment for so long that... he already had some short-term plans in mind... He has lived ten years as Billy Batson and ten years as Billy the Fifth Magi.

Flash: Cap… how long has it been? Flash seems to understand Billy's dilemma a little.

"Ten years."

That makes everyone hug him. Billy cries with happiness.

Billy: I’ve helped this world a lot. I’ve met many countries… I’ve been the Magi of several of them. I feel like I’ve learned a lot. But despite having enjoyed it here so much… I don't forget my role as the champion of magic at home… let's go back.

The people of our dimension also have the right to their own Magi to protect them. I have many stories to tell you. There was a really cool guy named Sinbad, a boy named Alibaba who reminds me of myself, a little Magi named Aladdin, and this pink-haired girl like Jinx who was as strong as you, Diana.

But I'm happy they arrived now. If they had arrived seven years ago, they would have had to face Sinbad, the king of the seven seas.

It’s almost midnight, and William has not yet defeated Black Adam.

He would be more worried if he hadn’t seen his future that morning. Well, maybe a few of them, and in most of them, Black Adam loses.

He knows that the champion will fall hard but will get back up and keep fighting until Adam is distracted by a blow from the mortal called Superman. It will only take two blows, and William will win.

In almost every world, he does.

Then he will celebrate the victory with the other humans and return to the cave. He will take the book, and the wizard will know what will happen to the champion tomorrow...

There is a special book that this old wizard has treasured for thousands of years.

He calls it the Book of Memories.

The person who touches it leaves an imprint of their soul, and he can see it all. But when one unpacks that term, it can apply to their past, present, and certainly something beyond...

With the application of his own magic, the book could show the person’s future, even if only for a day. It was the most invaluable treasure that exists in the multiverse.

And something only the gods know, it was also the reason he is the last champion standing. How he despised the sin of greed, but he was so old now that he began to doubt whether it had been worth keeping the book just for himself. The statue in front of his throne occasionally laughed, clearly aware of his feelings.

Soon, it will be William's book, the wizard thinks. Soon the new champion will have to face this book. The rock above his head will soon free him from his sin.

But something always goes wrong. He thinks it has happened very few times, but it’s always possible when it comes to the champion’s future.

William arrived immediately after defeating Black Adam. Six hours earlier. A not so radical and acceptable change, the wizard thinks.

Billy: Wizard! Adam... Adam told me about a book! A book that only you can see and that I must hold for it to work...

The wizard saw the betrayal in his gaze, which brought so many memories to light, but it was already too late...

Mamaragan: It's true. There is a magical book, but it can't control your future. That is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. I am not a god, William, and neither is Adam.

Billy: But he told me you could know everything about me and control me at your will.

Mamaragan: I deny part of that statement, champion.

Billy: I won’t hold that book anymore.

Mamaragan: I accept your resolution, champion, but you will do it when the situation calls for it... whether I am in the realm of the living or not.

The teenager awkwardly stepped back and ran out of the Rock of Eternity.

The old man knows he will return. Not for the book, but he has lived long enough to believe it... and speaking of enough.

The rope holding the great stone trembles in the face of the inevitable...

Mamaragan: Well, what do you say, old foe? Do you want to count the seconds? I'll start! One, two, three, four.

Avarice: Five and six... Wizard.

The wizard leaves a letter for the champion; the day has ended as it was written, and Billy would use the book, just as it was written.

The sky shone.

The world panicked.

And for a second, life itself almost went extinct...

A comet so powerful left traces of its passage, and its imminent destiny was almost a promise of extinction.

So what had saved them?

Governments and the Justice League themselves had announced that nothing could be done... They mourned the loss and defeat.

But finally, humanity had answers...

They say everything owes to the law of action and reaction.

The world took the announcement turned it into stories, prayers, and monuments across the lands.

Superman: We owe it all to Captain Marvel... He took the comet and disappeared in action. The League has lost a dear friend... And the Earth, the best of all of us...

Wonder Woman: Wherever Captain Marvel is... He will continue thinking of us... He will always have faith, and no matter how long it takes... We believe he will return someday... And we will wait for him, being the best version he always believed in each of us...

Superman: Even if it takes more than any body can bear... He will be tired after a long journey, confused, but happy that you're safe... Welcome him... Give him a hug from us...

Wonder Woman: And hold him as he always did with us...

Superman: So that his light never goes out... And the Earth recovers its champion.

Maybe his cape will wave in front of the Earth one day, maybe one day they can throw him a welcome party... One day Captain Marvel will be able to return to Earth from the other side of the universe... If Black Adam had managed it, there was no doubt that the Captain would do it too.
