LET’S DANCE FORTIETH ANNIVERSARY

David Bowie’s smash hit album LET’S DANCE was released 40 years ago today, on 14th April 1983. Produced by DB and funk/R&B genius Nile Rodgers (pictured above).

Singles released from the album were Let’s Dance, China Girl and Modern Love. All made the top 3 in the UK, with Let’s Dance making it to number 1.

I recently attended an Elmhurst University lecture event featuring legendary producer, musician, and songwriter Nile Rodgers, hosted by legendary Chicago disc jockey and Elmhurst U grad, Terri Hemmert. It was an excellent event with Rodgers telling many wonderful stories about his life and career.

He talked about co-producing David Bowie's album Let's Dance and the hit song of the same name. When he agreed to produce Bowie, he initially thought he would be making a typical Bowie album. He was surprised when Bowie told him that he wanted to make hits. At one point, Bowie came to Rodgers with a rather simplistic chord progression and indicated that they could turn it into a hit. Rodgers didn't see it that way but he played around with it and changed the structure until it became the backbone of the song Let's Dance. It was one of Bowie's biggest hit songs and help propel the album into his all-time best seller.

So in honor of that cool story about a great song and album, I am kicking off the weekend with Let's Dance.

Most of those records that make their musicians noticeable again tend to play to their strengths. Well, Bowie's Black Tie White Noise might be an outlier here. Sure, Bowie returned after his 80's pop wilderness, yet no one really guessed he would've done a record like this. The platter should be seen as a dare, if you ask me. Bowie was always savvy, so Black Tie White Noise challenged what he represented at the point. He conversed with the modern times, though the disc seemed so homely alien with the mix of R&B and art rock. True, he sounded like throughout his career, but the platter shocked those who assumed he would've kept doing his 80's under a different guise. Thus, he staked his claim for the 90's, yet few saw this as his intention, he became another veteran losing the plot.
