Adam Gabbatt and Ed Pilkington at The Guardian:
Anger and vitriol took center stage at New York’s Madison Square Garden on Sunday night, as Donald Trump and a cabal of campaign surrogates held a rally marked by racist comments, coarse insults, and dangerous threats about immigrants. Nine days out from the election, Trump used the rally in New York to repeat his claim that he is fighting “the enemy within” and again promised to launch “the largest deportation program in American history”, amid incoherent ramblings about ending a phone call with a “very, very important person” so he could watch one of Elon Musk’s rockets land. The event at Madison Square Garden, in the center of Manhattan, had drawn comparisons to an infamous Nazi rally held at the arena in 1939. Tim Walz, Kamala Harris’ running mate, said there was a “direct parallel” between the two events, and the Democratic National Committee projected images on the outside of the building on Sunday repeating claims from Trump’s former chief-of-staff that Trump had “praised Hitler”.
There was certainly a dark tone throughout the hours-long rally, with one speaker describing Puerto Rico, home to 3.2m US citizens, as an “island of garbage”; Tucker Carlson mocking Harris’ racial identity; a radio host describing Hillary Clinton as a “sick bastard”; and a crucifix-wielding childhood friend of Trump’s declaring that Harris is “the antichrist”. The Puerto Rico comments, made by Tony Hinchliffe, a podcaster with a history of racist remarks, were immediately criticized by the Harris-Walz campaign. Ricky Martin, the Puerto Rican popstar who has more than 18m followers on Instagram, wrote in a post: “This is what they think of us. Vote for @kamalaharris.” Trump campaign spokesperson Danielle Alvarez in a statement said “this joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign.”
But that could prove problematic in Pennsylvania, where the majority of the swing state’s 580,000 eligible Latino voters are of Puerto Rican descent. Both campaigns have been trying to appeal to Latino voters in the final weeks of the campaign, and Harris had visited a Puerto Rican restaurant in Philadelphia earlier on Sunday, where she outlined plans to introduce an “economic opportunity taskforce” for Puerto Rico. The pugnacious mood didn’t change once Trump began speaking, as the former president quickly repeated his pledge to “launch the largest deportation program in American history”.
Trump continued his frequent rants about immigration and claimed that a “savage Venezuelan prison gang” had “taken over Times Square”, which will come as a surprise to anyone who has recently visited the New York landmark. The former president also stated, wrongly, that the Biden administration did not have money to respond to a recent hurricane in North Carolina because “they spent all of their money bringing in illegal immigrants, flying them in by beautiful jet planes”. Trump’s usual dystopian threats were on offer, as the 78-year-old expanded on his claims about “the enemy within” – a group of political opponents that he has said he will set the military on if elected. “We’re just not running against Kamala. I think a lot of our politicians here tonight know this. She means nothing, she’s purely a vessel that’s all she is,” Trump said. “We’re running against something far bigger than Joe or Kamala and far more powerful than them, which is a massive, vicious radical-left machine that runs today’s Democrat party. They’re just vessels.”
[...] “There’s a direct parallel to a big rally that happened in the mid-1930s at Madison Square Garden. And don’t think that he doesn’t know for one second exactly what they’re doing there.” The Trump campaign reacted furiously to the accusations, describing Clinton’s comments as “disgusting”. One of the few people to reference the 1939 rally on Sunday was Hulk Hogan, who emerged to wrestling music, spent several seconds struggling to rip off his shirt, then claimed: “I don’t see no stinkin’ Nazis in here”. After a night of fire and fury, it will be up to the American voters to decide.
The MSG Trump Rally in NYC on Sunday was nothing more than a modern-day Nazi rally for the brainwashed MAGA cultists, as Donald Trump and various MAGA hacks launched hateful racist, unhinged, and bigoted tirades.

Donald Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally on Sunday turned ugly right from the start when one speaker after another unleashed a barrage of racist, sexist, xenophobic, and generally hate-filled rhetoric that was primarily directed at Vice President Kamala Harris but also targeted many others who are not welcome in the America Republicans pretend to want to make great again.
It is stunning that this happened in a week in which Trump’s fascism became an issue, and it seems as though there is no conceivable way in which this could possibly help the former president sway undecided voters.
At times, the rhetoric was so vile that one had to wonder whether the speakers realized that they were on camera and being recorded.
However, it is much more likely that they simply did not care because being hateful is what the Trump campaign has always been about.
Things got off to a rousing start when “comedian” Tony Hinchcliffe called the US territory of Puerto Rico “a floating island of garbage.”
He also stated that Latinos “love making babies.”
“They do. There is no pulling out,” he said. “They come inside. Just like they did to our country.”
Remarkably, things got worse from there.
For example, radio host Sid Rosenberg had some thoughts on Hillary Clinton, who is not a candidate for anything, and the Democratic Party.
“She is some sick bastard, that Hillary Clinton. What a sick son of a bitch,” he said. “The whole fucking party. A bunch of degenerates. Low-lives, Jew haters, and low-lives. Every one of them.”
Obviously, much of the vitriol was directed at Harris.
David Rem, a friend of Trump’s, called her “the devil” and the “antichrist.”
It is important to remember that all of this happened in the first hour of the same event. There really isn’t an explanation for it… unless Elon Musk offered a $1 million prize to the person who was most disgusting and offensive.
Of course, no hate-filled, anti-immigrant rally would be complete without MAGA ghoul Stephen Miller.
“America is for Americans and Americans only,” Miller told a cheering crowd.
Like many other speakers, including the GOP’s vice presidential candidate JD Vance, he also claimed that “they” tried to kill Trump… a reference to the registered Republican who shot the former president.
Next up was House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), who earlier this week issued a sanctimonious statement asking Harris to tone down her rhetoric.
He spent his time at the podium calling her a “Marxist.”
Then, right-wing agitator Tucker Carlson, who referred to Harris as a “Samoan Malaysian,” laid the groundwork for a second coup attempt by suggesting there was no way the Democrats could win more votes than Trump.
It bears repeating that all of this (and much more) happened during a single rally that was supposed to be the crowning event of Trump’s campaign… and before the former president even began his own speech.
It is possible that these speakers were supposed to make him look like less of a racist when he finally takes the podium. Then again, based on his recent appearances, that seems highly unlikely.

"If I’m honest, the B-52’s got me to question my own prejudices. Where I was brought up there was a lot of anti-LGBTQ bigotry. When I was still a teenager, the B-52’s helped teach me to grow beyond them. For that alone I owe them a huge debt of gratitude. I was terribly saddened by Ricky’s passing and felt so sorry for the whole band.
I heard Rock Lobster on the radio and got the debut LP. I was just getting into punk rock and although I didn’t really consider the B-52’s “punk”, they were definitely breaking rules and creating music that was unconventional and groundbreaking: while disco was being derided, here was a band who it was OK to dance along to. They were so different and cool. We all loved their first two albums and I’m sure they influenced us. We definitely learned that music doesn’t have to be taken so seriously.
We learned a lot by covering 52 Girls. I loved Ricky’s sound, and of course his guitar looked so cool on a record sleeve, with its missing strings. At the time most rock guitar heroes were so bombastic and over the top, so Ricky’s understated playing and fun approach was really novel. To this day I’m still trying to find just the right Mosrite guitar in honour of him and Johnny Ramone."
- Noodles, The Offspring
"The B-52’s and Talking Heads always felt like Devo’s kindred spirits. We were all unique and not very punk. The punks didn’t like us because we weren’t orthodox, and orthodoxy permeates rock’n’roll. We’d first become aware of the B-52’s through independent record stores when we were hawking our debut single. It was exciting because I knew where they were coming from, how they were grabbing from 1960s kitsch with the beehive hairdos and the theatricality of it all. It was like they’d come from their own planet. Who on earth sings about a Rock Lobster?
It was outsider stuff with a distinctive sound that was consciously slightly retro, coming from surf music and rockabilly, but not with rockabilly beats. They’d come up through the Athens, Georgia, scene and dance clubs and were in the realm of LGBTQ [music] before such a thing was identified. They were transgressive and polarising, but in a different way to Devo. I met Kate at the Mudd Club in New York in early 79 and immediately fell for her. She had the beehive, of course, because they were always in character, which I thought was fantastic."
- Gerald Casale, Devo
"We in Talking Heads became friends with the B-52’s early on. I remember they told us: “You have to see this other band from Athens playing at Danceteria – they’re called REM.” The Athens, Georgia bands were all very supportive of one another, it seemed to me.
I produced an album with the B-52’s which ended up as an EP [Mesopotamia]. I suspect they came to me because they wanted to experiment a little bit more. Maybe that’s why the LP got cut down to an EP – or maybe the other songs weren’t up to snuff?
My favourite song from that record was Deep Sleep, which sounded like Young Marble Giants gone psychedelic. Ricky Wilson, who was such a large part of their sound, had Aids at that time, and was not around for many of the sessions. It was a pretty tough time for the band but they persevered and eventually revived. They were a tight family."
- David Byrne, Talking Heads

Photos from various concerts I've seen in New York City, not in chronological order. I'm just posting these bc I went back to a previous Photos app library on an external drive and saw a bunch that I haven't seen in a few years. Many / most of these were shot with first- or second-generation iPhone cameras, so they're blurry and hard to really see but I don't mind. From the top:
Patty Schemel, Eric Erlandson, and Melissa Auf Der Maur from Hole, standing outside a theater in the East Village that had just screened Patty's documentary about her life in the band. Not really a 'concert', but I'll allow it
Pavement in Central Park
Quasi, at the Bowery Ballroom
M. Ward show, Central Park
David Byrne, Radio City Music Hall
King Crimson, Madison Square Garden Theater (small venue adjacent to the bigger MSG)
Paul Simon, giving a free talk on songwriting at the Union Square Barnes & Noble
Line of fans along W16th Street to see an early Justin Bieber show at the Highland Ballroom (i did not attend that show but the very long line outside my apartment building surprised me in 2008 to snap that photo)
Foo Fighters at MSG
Waiting for Nick Lowe and Robyn Hitchcock at The Grand Ballroom
Waiting for Aimee Mann at the Town Hall
Outside St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn before the doors opened for a benefit concert featuring Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, Antony, Blonde Redhead, Scissor Sisters, Norah Jones, and Damien Rice
The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black, at the Park Avenue Armory during the Whitney Biennale
REM at MSG
Jackson Browne playing at a Borders Bookstore on the UES

Hiiiii!!! I recently found your acc and I absolutely love your fics!!! Your writing style is absolutely beautiful and has be giggling and kicking my feet like it’s just so cute!!! I had a request about Remus x reader where like Remus is not really into the whole dressing up for Halloween deal because he’s self conscious about his scars and stuff and reader doesn’t push him to dress up but she knows he loves David Bowie so she surprises Remus by dressing up like Remus even puts on fake scars and stuff but with the David Bowie star on her face with red and blue makeup??? With like lots of fluff?? I hope that was a good explanation 😭
remus lupin x reader who dresses up as him and david bowie
Halloween was always one of your favorite times of the year. You loved the thrill of finding the perfect costume, the atmosphere of spooky decorations, and the endless possibilities for creativity. However, you knew that Remus didn’t quite share the same enthusiasm. Halloween wasn’t exactly his favorite day, and while he’d never said why outright, you could tell it made him self-conscious—his scars, the whispers they might bring up. So, this year, you made sure he wouldn’t feel pressured to dress up.
But that didn’t mean you weren’t going to dress up. And if you were going to dress up, you had an idea that just might make him feel included without forcing him into anything he wasn’t comfortable with.
The Halloween party was buzzing with energy when you arrived, music pumping, laughter echoing through the common room. Lily looked effortlessly cool as she adjusted her witch hat, James was in full Quidditch gear, broom over his shoulder, and Sirius had somehow convinced Peter to dress up as “Cereal Killers”—each holding a spoon and wearing cereal boxes taped to their robes.
James spotted you first, his eyes going wide before a huge grin split across his face. “Look at you!” he laughed, nudging Remus, who had been sipping his drink quietly. “You’ve got to see this.”
Remus turned, and you could see his eyes widen, taking in your costume. You’d gone all out to transform yourself into his hero: a mix of David Bowie and Remus Lupin himself. Your face bore the iconic red and blue lightning bolt, your clothes an eccentric mix of stripes and colors, but the part that you’d put the most thought into was the addition of the fake scars—a gentle mimicry of his own, scattered over your face and arms. You hoped it would make him smile, feel understood, maybe even a little less alone.
“Dove…” he breathed out, staring at you, a flicker of awe in his eyes. “Are you… are you Bowie? As me?”
You grinned, twirling for dramatic effect. “A little bit of both, love. Bowie-Lupin crossover, exclusive for tonight.”
Remus bit back a smile, but his eyes softened as he took you in. “You didn’t have to…” he started, but there was no hiding the warmth and appreciation in his voice.
“Oh, but I wanted to!” You stepped closer to him, giving him a playful look. “Besides, I look incredible, don’t I?” You struck a dramatic rockstar pose, making Remus chuckle.
“Understatement,” he replied, his cheeks slightly pink. “But—why Bowie?”
“Because you love him,” you replied simply, reaching for his hand. “And maybe because you’re a bit like him. Strong, unique, a little mysterious. It’s… it’s how I see you, Rem.”
There was a flicker of surprise in his eyes, quickly replaced by a soft look that made your heart squeeze. He gave your hand a gentle squeeze back. “You’re something else, you know that?”
James, grinning ear to ear, shouted, “Oi, lovebirds, save the romance! It’s Halloween!” He nudged Sirius, who nodded vigorously.
“Yeah, come on, Lupin! Kiss her already!” Sirius yelled, earning laughter from everyone. Remus turned an even deeper shade of pink, glancing at you with a smirk.
“Guess we should give them what they want?” you teased.
He laughed softly, leaning in, and pressed a warm kiss to your forehead, ignoring the whistles and cheers from the others.
“Oh, come on! The lips, Moony!” Sirius pouted dramatically.
“Shut up, Padfoot,” Remus replied with a laugh, slipping an arm around you.
Peter, looking at the lightning bolt on your face, tilted his head. “You should keep the Bowie look more often, Y/N. It suits you!”
“Maybe I will,” you laughed. “As long as I get Moony to be my rockstar sidekick.”
Remus chuckled, letting his fingers brush gently over your Bowie-inspired face paint. “I think I can do that.”
Hi!!! Oh my goodness, thank you so much!! Knowing my writing has you giggling and kicking your feet—ahh, you’re the sweetest! I’m so happy you found my page! 🥹💕
Also I am not kidding when I say that I blushed (a lot) while writing this 😳
