Now that David was fully recovered he took to frequenting the local bar in the evenings. It took his mind off of things, especially when the house was dark and still and memories of the front lines penetrated his thoughts.
There he found men like him, drinking their troubles away. Some were also veterans of the war, others worked at the secret laboratory in the desert, and others were simple laborers spending their meager earnings on a whisky or scotch.
His late night comings and goings unsettled Larry, who was finding it harder to get through the nights. He was often plagued with nightmares of monsters under his bed or in the town, and the only comfort he could think to seek was his mother.
One night he woke in a sweat, his heart pounding, and with shaky steps he made his way to his mother’s bedroom. He was stunned, though, to see his father sitting up in the living room. At first glance he looked asleep, but a squeaky floorboard gave Larry away and David beckoned him over.
Dave told Larry that he too had a hard time sleeping and was often woken by nightmares of his own. Larry was surprised by this. In his mind, his father was a stoic soldier who couldn’t be burdened by anything, but he was starting to realize this wasn’t true at all.
They talked for more than an hour, sharing their bad dreams and words of comfort.
“Nightmares aren’t real, Larry,” Dave assured him, “they can’t hurt you, and I won’t let anything hurt you or your mother or your brother.”
“You never have to go back, do you?” Larry asked.
David smiled and pet his son’s cheek, “no, I’m home for good.”
And for maybe the first time, Larry was glad of that. His father was feeling less like a stranger and more like a friend. It still hurt to think of all the time j’s missed out on, but he would never be fatherless again.
David too was glad to be bonding with his boy. But it did nothing to lessen the guilt he felt. He had missed so much of Larry’s youth and for what? He hadn’t been able to save anyone, his men had still been killed. What had it all been for?

A few weeks after the attack Dave was released from the hospital and sent home to recover. The injuries he sustained were severe enough to prevent him from returning to service, a blessing the family was grateful for.
When Beverly wasn’t working she tended to her husband, hoping to help him get back on his feet quickly. The baby was due any day now, and with it would come another drain on their already tight income. Even if he couldn’t fight anymore, David needed to be working.
As Dave’s health improved he began to get up and roam about the house more. He took to sitting in the living room chair to smoke, a habit which disturbed Larry.
For Larry the transition was difficult. Even though David was his father, he barely knew him. Now he was in the house, smoking and disrupting all of Larry’s routines. He wanted to love him, but he was a stranger.

Nothing about Kess Pedrock’s life is normal. Not her home (she lives in her family’s Unnatural History Museum), not her interests (hunting for megafauna fossils and skeletons), and not her best friend (a talking demon’s head in a jar named Shrunken Jim). But things get even stranger than usual when Kess meets Lilou Starling, the new girl in…
