RECORDING SESSION Studio Sessions for RCA December 10–16, 1973: Stax Studios, Memphis The next number, Tom Jans’s “Loving Arms,” was perfectly suited to Elvis’s voice. The powerful but touching folk-country ballad instantly sparked the musicians to new heights of fresh, sophisticated playing. The song was as demanding on them as “My Boy” had been on Elvis’s voice, and when Felton cautiously asked for a third take, he was relieved to watch it yield a perfect master. ORIGINAL RECORDING "Loving Arms" was first-recorded by Dobie Gray and released as a single by MCA Records on July 1973, backed with "Now That I'm Without You" (Ref. MCA 40100). The same year, in September, the song was released on a long play record, the album Loving Arms (Ref. MCA-371).

"Loving Arms" by Kris Kristofferson and Rita Coolidge (1973) On September 1973, Kristofferson and Coolidge's version was released on the album Full Moon. The song was released as a single in early 1974 (backed with "I'm Down (But I Keep Falling)" - Ref. A&M 1498).

FOLLOWING RELEASES (1974) Petula Clark released "Loving Arms" as A-side single (backed with "I'm The Woman You Need"- Ref. Dunhill 15019) in November 1974.

THE WRITER'S RECORDING In 1974, A&M Records released Tom Jans' recording of "Loving Arms" on his self-titled album (Ref. SP-3644).

“Alan Turing: Unlocking the Enigma”

Who is Alan Turing? In this day an age he’s not an obscure character any longer. His face will be on the £50 note. To be honest, I didn’t who he was until the film “The Imitation Game” came out in 2014. I had heard of the Turing test before – I think I first got notice of it on one of the documentaries that come with the special edition box of the movie trilogy “Matrix”, which I highly recommend, if you’re into philosophy – in the context of philosophy regarding  AI. My academic education is on arts and sciences, so I didn’t got to have a higher education on mathematics, algebra, logic.

Alan Turing was a British mathematician, more well known by his 1947 paper where he talks about the future of computing and of AI (Turing is considered that father of Artificial Intelligence). But he was also one of the precursors of the computer as we know it today (along with Lord Babbage and Ada Lovelace – daughter of Lord Byron). But he also had a brilliant mind to crack codes, and hence his connection with the British secret services during World War II, where he helped crack the Enigma Code. He remained connected with war time secret service during the Cold War, working on the making of the first British nuclear bomb. By the end of his life he started to become much more interested in biology and its patterns, namely the relation of these with the Fibonacci sequence.

Yes, a unique mind. But, also a somewhat unique person. He was a shy person, and very straightforward, having been connected to a communist movement early in his life. Turing wasn’t bending knees for anyone, even if this would mean his downfall, especially regarding his sexual orientation – a crime in the United Kingdom at his time, and which caused for him to undergo “hormone treatment” and prison. A pardon was officially made in 2013 by the British Parliament, without however changing the law at that time. Turing was persecuted by the intelligence police due to his way of life and how this was seen to compromise national security.

David Boyle’s account comes about in a very small book, that you can read in a few hours, but that’s very good to give a wide view on Turing’s life, work, and impact he had on the world. I bought it in 2015, after watching the film, to start learning more about this decisive person, that led the way in so many areas of knowledge and that, sadly, was treated so ill indeed.

“I end by noting something surely perverse, if constitutionally sound enough, about this bill. It would grant Alan a pardon, when surely all of us would far prefer to receive a pardon from him”.

I am loving this Redacted match-up idea. So here goes mine! 😃

• The song my brain’s latched onto right now is “Make Me Cry” by Jacob Collier. The vibes are so perfect. It’s so mellow, and his voice is so freaking comforting. Like…smooth, thick hot chocolate or something. If that even makes sense XD

• I…have no idea what my Ennegram type is. But I’ll totally tell you some other things! I’m a Libra, a Hufflepuff, and last time I checked, my Myers-Briggs type is INFJ? But don’t quote me on that. XD

• Alas, I don’t think I’ve got enough of an attention span to sit through a video essay 😅

• I never really had an imaginary friend as a kid, tbh 🤔

• “Flirty Vampire Boyfriend Helps You Sleep” knocks me out almost every time I listen. So, most nights, it’s that video.

• If I had to change my name, I’d probably change it to Grace. (That’s what it would have been if I wasn’t the name my parents *did* decide to give me)

• Man, that’s a hard question! Buuuut I gotta say, every time I think of my favorite Redacted vids, Vincent’s third video (the one where he “loses control” with Lovely) comes to mind. I might be biased though, because Vincent was my introduction to the channel, but it’s such a good one! The drama. 😍 I freaking love it. We’re not gonna talk about Adam, though, because he terrifies me. XD

• Honestly? I don’t get the hype around David. Maybe it’s just the fact that I’m not a huge fan of Tsunderes (which is funny to me, because I love Aaron) and that I prefer vampires to werewolves anyway, but I dunno. He’s just not my cup of tea.

• I could quote Avatar: The Last Airbender all day long. Don’t even get me started. XD SECRET, SECRET, SECRET, SECRET TUNNEEEEEEELLLLL!

• I want Elliott as a BFF, please and thank you. 🥺

• I wouldn’t say I ramble about this when I’m tired, but if someone else shares the interest too, I’ll talk about musicals for forever.

• Well..I don’t drive, so I don’t really visit many gas stations. XD But my combo would probably be a bottle of water and a bag of mini M&Ms.

• It’s actually a Spotify playlist that my best friend and I made for one of my OCs. 🥰

• This is embarrassing to admit, but I still watch stuff that’s “for kids” from time to time. Barbie movies, Strawberry Shortcake, Sofia the First, pretty much any “girly” show that’s made for someone way younger than 24? I love it. 😊 (It’s probably a comfort thing, now that I think about it)

• Let’s see… Other fun facts 🤔. I’m the “youngest” of four (by like, five minutes, so I don’t know if that really means anything), and if you couldn’t tell from this ask, I use emojis up the butt, and am a total stickler for proper grammar. 😂

Oh, so I’ve actually thought about this- you know who’d pair wonderfully with someone from a big family? Huxley with his gorgeous, friendly nature and open heart.

He’s just so natural to love and get along with, so easy-going and charming. Our favorite earth elemental would be so mind-boggled by all your siblings but also delighted, just like your family would delight in him and how well-suited the two of you are together-

-and the two of you are so cute together. Huxley has this steady, reliable nature while also being fun and silly and light. I can totally see him genuinely enjoying all the things you do, even the shows for little girls that you’d be initially embarrassed for him to see you watching. No one is immune to the power of Barbie Nutcracker, and Huxley is no exception. He is ready with popcorn, a cozy blanket, and open arms for a movie night.

So this works on 3, count ‘em, THREE levels. One! Earth Angel for an earth elemental? I am a fucking genius. Two. I love the fun, dreamy, romantic vibe for Huxley; it strikes me as something he likes because he heard his moms listen to it. Three. I will seize any and all opportunities to plug a musical, and the Back to the Future musical is so FUN.

Runner-Ups:

Guy is an easy-peasy runner up, because I love to pair musical theater babes together. (I was so sure that was his major before we learned it was creative writing.) I also love Ollie for you, because (fuck JK Rowling and all she stands for but) we love to pair a Hufflepuff with a Hufflepuff.

Note: highly recommend the Back to the Future musical which is rumored to make its Broadway debut soon, it’s very true to the vibes of the movie 🌈

About Me

My name is Tombstone and I study the history of science, religion, and death in the late Middle Ages and Early Modern period in Western Europe. I am interested in the intersection of science and religion (mostly Christianity but with special regard for the role of Judaism and Islam in the preservation, translation, and dissemination of ancient thought) from the 1200s, when the first universities were founded, to the 1700s, the dawn of the Scientific Revolution. I study these cultural shifts through the lens of death, dying, and remembrance.

Introduction to Historical European Scientific and Religious Reading Material

This list is taken mostly from my own bookshelf and class syllabi, with some contributions from scholarly journals and other academic sources. While I have read the majority of them, I cannot vouch for everything on this list, and part of academia is using your own critical thinking to determine which side of an argument you fall on. History is brilliantly multi-faceted, largely subjective in the face of an incalculable number of unknowns, and constantly expanding. As such, this list will be periodically updated and modified.
