oh lord, this is TOUGH. i’ve read thousands of fanfics in my life and it’s borderline impossible for me to choose 😭

i can’t rlly separate them into genres per se bc most of them are multi chapter novel-length fics, but i will if applicable!

i’m not a huge fan of condensing entire works into a single word!!! authors work too hard for their writing to be trope-ified like that! so if any of the writers come across this post, please know that i would write fucking essays about these fics if y’all asked.

and one last disclaimer: i’m currently on my phone with limited cell service in europe and can’t jump between tabs to check peoples’ separate tumblr and ao3 usernames, so i’ve tagged who i know off the top of my head!!

so here are my top 10 (in no particular order, just listing what comes to mind first)

“in the sun” (kurt cobain x OC) by ugh-nirvana on wattpad. it has been my favorite fanfiction of all fucking time; i read this at least once a year. primarily fluff and angst, but it follows the OC and kurt through high school and into adulthood. the author and i are actually friends now bc we wrote two of the most popular kurt cobain x OC fics on wattpad 😭🖤

“the windows of this love” (byler angst) by delusional together (Whyyyyy) on ao3. phenomenal story, i cry every time i read it, and i’ve read it so many times it’s kind of a problem lmaooo. it was also one of my inspirations for TIMT.

“that blue gibson” (dave grohl x OC) by thatbluegibson on wattpad. a literal masterpiece. cute, romantic, fluffy, spicy, all of the above.

“the rawest desire (in it’s friendliest form)” (byler smut) by bangingbiddies on ao3. they have a very apropos username; this fic had me slamming my laptop shut multiple times and screaming at my cat. probably the best smut i’ve read tbh.

“i’m a wreck (without you here)” (byler angst) by @oldfashionedmorphine on ao3. INSANE. BEAUTIFUL. LYRICAL. i cannot praise this story highly enough, it’s one of my favorite byler fics of all time. alcoholic mike wheeler is my favorite mike wheeler ngl.

“second chances and dances” (byler angst/fluff) by @foodiewithdahoodie on ao3!!!! i’m a huge sucker for dad mike fics, and this one is *chefs kiss*

“lost without you” (byler angst/fluff) by julia_skysong on ao3. another dad mike fic i actually just finished for the 3rd fucking time in the past 6 months. i recommend reading this whole series, it’s so well written (and is still being written!!).

“fence sitter” (byler smut) by pinkcash on ao3. exactly what the title suggests. sensually spicy and severely suspenseful.

“boy in my class [gerard way]” by lilyrose93 on wattpad. it’s a gerard way x OC. very cute, very cliche, but if you’re looking for ✨fluff✨, this is it. and listen, i know writing about real people who are still alive is kinda weird but like… this one is serious, ok??? 💀

“tell me i’m a bad man” by therevengeparade on wattpad. along the same lines as the one before this— it’s teacher/student frerard. very messy, very smutty, top tier drama. if it helps at all, this was probably my initiation to gay fanfic. so… thanks therevengeparade!!! love u!!!

"Fuck this," I say, looking down under the hood of my 1970 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser. It was a gift from my Dad for graduating High School. Little did he know that not even two months later I'd be using the piece of shit to run to Seattle to join a rock band.

The rain was pouring down on a freezing December night. My band, Low-Kut, had just played a gig downtown in an underground rock bar as we were trying to raise funds to record our debut album. I didn't get out of Olympia before my car engine started acting up. Luckily, I had pulled into an empty parking lot before it shut down completely.

Ask me how to build an electric guitar from scraps? No problem. Ask me anything about cars? I'm fucked. After about 15 minutes of standing in the rain, staring blanky under the hood of my car, I gave up.

Looking around me for any sign of life, I noticed a payphone across the street at a closed gas station. I walked over to it, counting the change in my pocket as I decided who to call. I put some quaters in and dialled one of the few numbers that I had memorised.

"C'mon, c'mon," I muttered under my breath as the phone rang, praying that theh didn't have their phone disconnected.

After a while I hear the familiar voice of my boyfriend speak through the phone. "Hello?"

"Hey babe, it's me-" I talked as quick as I could, trying to say what I needed to before my change ran out.

"Hi! How was your show hun?" Dave asked, excitedly. I could hear the genuine interest in his voice, which made me smile.

"It was really good, but my car broke down a few blocks from your place and I really don't want to deal with it tonight so can I stay over?" I asked, hopefully.

"Uh, yeah- yeah sure. I just gotta check with Kurt first but I'm sure it will be alright. Where are you? I'll come and get you," he spoke in a worried tone.

"No no, it's alright I'm not too far away. Just tell Kurt and I'll be there soon, ok?" I nodded, cautious about how much time I had left on the phone.

"Ok, see you then," he said and hung up the phone.

Dave and I had met after a Scream gig on their last American tour and hooked up in the back of my car. Then, a few months back, he had come to one of my shows with Kurt and Krist, who were friends with Nancy, our lead singer. After talking for a while, we realised where we knew eachother from and laughed. I gave him my number and he called to ask me out the next day.

I smiled at the memory as I grabbed my guitar case from the back seat of my car and walked down the streets of Olympia. The rain was getting heavier and I could feel it soak through my denim jacket, which I hugged tight to my body in attempt to keep warm. I was really starting to wish that I'd accept Dave's offer to come and pick me up.

The walk to 114 NE Pear Street seemed to take forever in the rain, though I knew it couldn't have been more than 10 minutes. I was buzzed in and I made my way up the almost collapsing staircase to their apartment.

Their apartment was the bare minimum of living, one bedroom (occupied by kurt), one bathroom, a tiny kitchen and a living room with an old couch that Dave slept on. For this reason, I hadn't spent the night before.

I knock on the door, for it to be opened by Kurt who greets me with a tired smile before retreating into his bedroom, leaving the door open. I hear the shower running through the apartment's thin walls.

"There's no lock... on the bathroom door," Kurt gives me a knowing smirk, pushing back his mop of blonde hair as he puts on the headphones that connects to his guitar amp.

I roll my eyes at the action before walking over to the living room and putting down by guitar case on the couch. I look around notice that the room looks... semi-clean? I smile at the thought of Dave rushing around trying to make the atrocity that usually is their apartment look half presentable when I called him from the payphone.

I make my way over to the bathroom and slowly open the door. The rusted hinges hinges creak quite loudly, making me cringe at the unpleasent sound.

"Kurt, please don't take a piss man. I'm in the shower," Dave's voice calls from behind the blue curtain and it takes all my strength not to immediatley start laughing. I close the door behind me as quietly as I can.

I quickly strip out of my wet clothes, leaving them on a pile the ground before tucking my head around the end of the shower curtain, facing the back of my naked boyfriend. Suds cover his shoulders and he has placed his long black hair atop his head while it was full of shampoo. "Hi," I say, announcing my presence.

Dave quickly turns his head over his shoulder to look at me, a smile quickly spread across his face once he realised who it was "Hey dear," he replied, rinsing out the shampoo.

I shake my head with a smile. He has a habit of using 1950s pet names ironically, as well as being an avid user of the phrase "honey, I'm home" while walking back into a filthy, cigarrete stained flat full of grunge musicians.

"Can I join you?" I asked. I watched as Dave stopped moving completely, though I wished that I could've seen the blush on his face in that moment.

"Y-yeah sure," he replied. I smiled, quickly ridding myself of my damp clothes into a pile on the floor before stepping into the bathtub-shower.

Hearing me close the shower curtain behind be, Dave turned around. He let out a low whistle as he looked me up and down. I moved my hands to try and cover myself out of embarassment, though he had seen my body countless times.

"You look nice," Dave smiled, taking a step towards me. I looked up at his face as I felt his calloused fingers rest on my bare hips in a gentle touch. "You should wear this outfit more often," he joked, raising his eyebrows.

"Mhm, so should you," I mumble stretching my neck upwards so our faces were incredibly close, feeling his warm breath on my lips as I waited for him to close the remaining distance between us.

He smiled goofily once more before pressing his lips against mine softly. As I deepened the kiss I could feel his hands run up and down my waist in a featherlight touch. When we made love it was always that, loving, fun and gentle.

As his hands trailed over my ass to the back of my thighs, I gasped a bit in shock and pulled away from the kiss. I giggled as I felt him lift me up, pressing my back to the cold shower tiles.

Dave leaned in to kiss me once more , but just before our lips met, I heard him mutter "Oh shit," as his feet slid out from underneath him and he fell into the tub.

Dave pulled me in close to him, subconciously, so that I wouldn't hit my head against the tiles as I fell into the bathtub on top of him. After a few moments of silence, the both of us burst into fits of laughter

As I tried pull myself up out of the bath, the shower curtain became un-attatched from the wall, falling into the bath on top of the both of us and causing the water from the shower head to spray all over the bathroom.

Though it would've been sensible for one of us to turn off the water, both Dave just continued laughing at the silliness of the situation.

"That-" Dave spoke inbetween chuckles. "That serves us right for trying to be spontaneously sexy,"

"Yes," I agreed "Only formal intercourse from now on,". My false-seriousness only caused him to laugh harder.

He shook his head, smiling as he looked up at me. "I love you," he spoke softly, pulling me in so that our lips met once more

this is from one of my favourite things that I’ve written but, so far, it’s been in the my eyes only folder (because it’s unfinished and it’s long and so unedited) but it’s basically reader and eddie dated in high school, reader fucked off without warning to california (I’m talking, never even broke up with eddie, just up and left (which was a reoccurring thing for her except this time it stuck)), she comes back around the holidays a few years later and her and Eddie get roped into things again. Eddie is a full fledged simp and reader is painfully avoidant loool. also I gave eddie dave grohls career (set pre-nirvana, touring in over crowded vans, playing at shitty dive bars, but destined for future fame) and I wish I had enough grit to finish it because I really want to share it with you guys :/

using this platform as an excuse to talk about books — so here’s what i read 2023 and what i recommend:

[ the storyteller: tales of life and music - dave grohl ] i am a huge foo fighters fan and grew up with my mom loving dave grohl, the stories he tells in this book are not chronological; but they are beautiful. it makes me admire this man more than i did, he’s truly inspiring. 4.5/5 stars, -0.5 because i could not retain as well when it would jump from year to year.

[ suicide notes - michael thomas ford ] i did not enjoy this book for as much as it was overhyped. i understood the plot, i understood the story, it was gripping but not generally moving. a common coming-of-age young romance with mental illness; not bad yet not the best. 2/5 stars, -3 because i did not like how slow and basic the storyline was, though i liked few of the characters

[ daisy jones & the six - taylor jenkins reid ] OH IM A TAYLOR JENKINS REID GIRLIE NOW. i had previously heard of evelyn hugo but at the time djats series had just came out, and i was curious to read the book. i watched the pilot and was sold, you’d think a hippie gal who loves rock bands would pass this up ?? TJR’s book style is so easy for me to get into too, i could NOT put the book down. greta writing and great storyline, forever a camila kinner and truther. -4.5/5 stars, -0.5 bc i HATED billy dunne and book eddie loving.

[ 11/22/63 - stephen king ] i read this for extra credit in my language arts class and when i tell you i’ve been DYING to read this book since i saw my mom read it. my roman empire is the JFK presidency and assassination, and i’ve always enjoyed stephen king… so this was just a chefs kiss. although, mr stephen king holds onto scenes a little too long and it could’ve been a 600 page book, not 800. so sometimes i caught myself snoozing, but i loved the concept loved the book. time traveling + historical + thriller + romance = 4/5 starred book, -1 only because it was longer than it should’ve been

[ water for elephants - sara gruen ] this book is one of those “it gets good at the end” books. i put this book down twice and it took me majority of the year to get into it. i did not enjoy the beginning, but over time and chapters it became better. true story on a circus with what i’m guessing are fictional main characters. either way it was good, good paced, and interesting. definitely makes you look at circuses or any animal show differently. 3/5 stars, -2 just cause the beginning was slow

[ intensity - dean koontz ] …. now wtf. i read this bc my mom recommended it… don’t read it. it’s good it’s crazy it blows your mind, but it is so so fucked up. it’s a murder story and it’s just gross and weird. intensity is the right title, it was very intense. i was holding my breath on so many scenes, yet it was somehow enjoyable just because of how much of a thriller it was. 3/5, -2 only cause i would never read it again, and it was gross.

[ red, white, & royal blue - casey mcquiston ] i noticed this was a movie so i thought why not watch it, i don’t tend to watch stuff before i read it, but i wanted a judgement on this book. i loved the movie just bc it was so cutesy and the characters were so in love. and i got that right in the book. definitely your typical cheesy teenage romance book with light smut, and very gay. so as much as people critique it, i enjoyed it and it was what i needed to read or have in that moment. just a sappy and cutesy love story. 4/5 stars, -1 because i wasn’t left as content as i thought i’d be

[ the seven husbands of evelyn hugo - taylor jenkins reid ] taylor jenkins reid the woman that you are. i understood the hype, i loved the book, it was written so well. there’s twists and just emotion and i loved it. i tabbed the book and everything. i just loved it, it’s truly a gripping and great story. fuck men, except for one he was a sweetheart. plus it’s around marilyn monroe/rita hayworth actress era and i eat that shit up. 5/5 stars, she’s just that girl.

[ the book thief - markus zusak ] :( i love this book but oh is it sad. i reread it for a school unit. liesel meminger you’re a remarkable girl. 4/5 stars, point off bc we had to do assignments on it and i hated one section of the book.

[ the complete persepolis - marjane satrapi ] during the iran revolutions and conflicts with the shah and stuff. it was okay, not my favorite but not bad. also a graphic novel!! autobiography also, pretty neat. 3/5 stars, not my cup of tea and we had to do stupid assignments on them that made us think too hard abt it
