Lots of enticing little niblets out here. Let them in.

Just Sat Down finds the Shifters shying away from the grand ambitions of their Market Square 7″ and retreating into lo-fi shade - with the exception of the comparatively bouncy “Melbourne & Monash Youth League.” Who the hell do these guys think they are, covering Paul Simon (”My Little Town”) and coming off like Ron House in his prime? Whether these songs are actually “new” or the band’s just clearing out the vault, it pretty well establishes the Shifters among the best of their compatriots in Australia, or maybe anywhere.

There’s good opening tracks, and then there’s “Floating” by Rose Mercie. The French four-piece conjure up visions of the Raincoats like the press release says, stumbling into all sorts of aural pleasure (”Spring and Fall” and “How Can I Talk” especially), but there’s hardly been a more apt title for a song than “Floating,” inhibitions and roadblocks melting away as you stand inches above the floor.

Even idyllic Iceland can spawn some venomous hardcore, and the recent Dauþiflin 7″ on Iron Lung oughta sell ya - especially once “Skófla Skófla” runs headfirst into “Enga Framtíð, Takk” (that’s “No Future, Thanks”). I don’t go for the “pogo punk” stuff much, but something about the searing reverb-drenched vocals of Dauðyflin push things into an arena where adrenaline and fear are indistinguishable.

Iron Lung hits home at least a few times a year, and between the Dauðyflin 7″ and this Geld LP, they’re primed to take top billing when it comes to hardcore. Geld’s from Australia, but they throw chunks of Japanese noise and Cleveland skullduggery into their sound, emerging with something that, while not new per se, certainly pins you against the wall for its duration. There’s a whole lotta talk about the “psych” influence on this record, but I’d much rather you be leveled by the Impalers-conjuring “Manic.” HC LP to beat this year.

There is something to Schakalens Bror’s Omelette of Disease, two sprawling sides of tinnitus-inducing atonal guitar scree presented without interruption - but you won’t find me leading any archeological expeditions to discover what lies beneath. The introduction by Schakalens Bror to the Bränn Ner Hela Skiten compilation LP, however (featuring Leda, Enhet För Fri Musik, someone named Pig who steals the show, and more) opens up a dark night I'd willingly get lost in.
