i have heard a lot of people deny that Marbekah isn't a problematic ship, and if anyone ever discusses the issues it's usually about Marcel choosing NOLA over Rebekah. But never the fact that Rebekah knew him a child.

And usually the defence is that Rebekah (like Elijah) wasn't an active parent after Klaus' jealous tantrum. I admit that Rebekah didn't fraternize with child!Marcel with the sole purpose of dating him, so traditional 'grooming' definition is hard to apply.

But Rebekah never set any kind of proper boundaries between them. When he initially had a crush on her, she should have explained that they're 'family' now and that's not how it works, thus stopping his crush from going further but not drive him away. She was the adult at that time.

On top of it, Marcel grew up watching Klaus-Rebekah's messed up dynamic. He was a traumatized child who watched these stuff being normalized by two of his white guardians. And the show has never been subtle about Marcel being raised in Klaus' image, or how much Klaus & Rebekah date people that look or act like eachother.

Oh and the casual disregard for adopted kids.

Why do you think Marbekah goes under the radar for this, when Caroline+Alaric, Stelena , Delena and Klaroline are often ripped apart for this exact reason?

Does it have anything to do with Marcel being poc or is it the infantilisation of Rebekah's character?

I used to really love Marbekah. They were top 3 TVDU ships for me. But the more I think about it, the more I have to rewrite to keep loving them. And I do want to love them just because it is one of the two ships I loved that actually got an endgame. But in typical TVDU fashion, the ships that got endgames were so problematic.

I don't think anyone can say Marbekah isn't problematic. It's one thing to love them, but they are deeply problematic for several reasons. One of them will always be Marcel constantly choosing either Klaus or New Orleans over her.

But the bigger reason is Rebekah grooming him. Because there isn't another way to say it. Rebekah knew Marcel as a child, helped raise him, and then quickly got into a relationship with him. We don't really know how old he was but he was at least in his early twenties when they first got together.

For the most part, as you said, I just headcannon that Rebekah wasn't an active parent in Marcel's life. But the show actively tries to fight against that narrative. The scene where Marcel is a literal child saying he wants to marry Rebekah was meant to be cute, but it's gross considering they then have a romantic relationship. You do mention that it doesn't fit the traditional definition of grooming, but I think it does because of that scene. Marcel makes a comment about being attracted to Rebekah in a way that he wants to marry her as a child and instead of seeing Rebekah rebuke this, she is flattered and essentially gives him a goal, saying she wouldn't marry someone who couldn't beat her in a duel. Not that she couldn't marry a child or someone her brother was raising as a son. This is then paired with a flashback of them dueling when he is an adult and they begin to kiss. The fact that they are still dueling all those years later make it seem as if she had an active role in his life. Rebekah's failure to set boundaries and encouraging the crush is a form of grooming. As you said, she should have set him down and explained family. But also as you point out, Rebekah doesn't really understand healthy family.

Marcel being raised by the Mikaelsons turned him into a Mikaelson. In some good ways and some bad. Marcel definitely has a lot of similar traits to Klaus. I definitely think there is an aspect of Rebekah choosing Marcel because of that, but also simply because the Mikaelsons had to keep it in the family or Klaus would lose his mind. Even though he also lost his mind here. But at least Rebekah wasn't worried about Klaus killing Marcel like he had killed every other lover she had in the past.

Klaus stans will say he "punished" Rebekah because of the grooming, but that's really ignoring his entire character and the entire show. Rebekah took something that belonged to him, because he viewed Marcel as property more than a child. This is another reason people overlook the grooming, because people don't view Marcel as a Mikaelson or as a child of Klaus. I've always been curious of where the last name "Gerard" came from. Why wouldn't he go by Mikaelson if he was raised by them? Klaus gave him a first name but not their last name? Potentially Marcel dropped it to distance himself, but even in the flashbacks, we don't see him truly being regarded as a Mikaelson. The show did this because they understood they were walking a creepy line of predatory/incest.

I think Marbekah tends to get less judgment than the other ships because people think Marcel and Rebekah are morally superior than the other characters. This is not true for everyone, just something I've seen with both of their stans. I love Rebekah, but I get attacked if I ever criticize her for how she treated the teenagers in TVD. Or the fact that Rebekah dated teenage Matt and used money and the ability to travel to persuade him to be with her. Or when I compare Marcel to Klaus, because they do have a lot of similarities. I've noticed with a lot of characters who may have less terrible deeds under their belt get away with murder, literally. If you criticize them, people will respond with "You like x, and they've done worse," instead of holding their character accountable. Or like with Klaus, their abuse is used to excuse all of their misdeeds.

People will argue that Rebekah was turned as a a 16 year old teenager so she was a teenager and it was fine for her to date teenagers, but then Marcel being with her at 25 years old is problematic as he's an adult sleeping with a 16 year old. Or Even Damon who was turned at 24 years old. So that argument is still problematic.

I do think Marcel being a POC does play a role. POC children and teens tend to face "adultification" in media, so people are less concerned about them being groomed or taken advantage of by adults. I do also agree that Rebekah is often infantilized. I blame a lot of her behavior in TVD for that. She behaved like a child. But in TO, they matured her so much, even in the flashbacks. If TVD Rebekah was with Marcel, I think that would have felt creepy on his part.

Like I said, I do still enjoy Marbekah, but I can't think about it too much or it grosses me out. I do prefer my ships to be age appropriate and contain the least amount of toxicity we can expect from a series like TVDU.

Out of everyone in Mystic Falls, Klaus takes an interest in you.

It surprised you. You weren’t exactly the most stand out person in the town, nor the most pretty by your standards.

He approaches you with his charm dialled up to a million. He flashes you his smile and you feel yourself swooning.

It’s not long before you go on a date with him. It of course being one of the most romantic nights of your life.

Yet you can’t get over your insecurity. This won’t last. He won’t stay.

Once he finds everything out about you he’ll get bored and leave. His Interest will dwindle and you don’t think your heart can handle it.

So one night you invite him over. Tell him of your concerns and propose that you try to tell him everything he wants to know.

That way he can decide sooner if he wants to leave.

The logic makes sense in your own head, yet seems completely ludicrous to Klaus.

How could he not be enamoured with you.

But he plays along. Spending the night asking you as many questions as his heart desires.

He’s not used to someone being so open and honest with him. You’re putting everything on the table and he can’t help but admire you for it.

Your attempt to scare him off only draws him in.

He makes this clear to you with gifts and gestures.

He gives you a intricate promise ring, so you can see that he plans to stick around for a long time.

When he says forever, he means forever.

Slowly but surely any doubts you have about yourself and Klaus’ intentions are washed away.

It gets a to a point where nothing he can do scares you off. Killing, intimidating, hunting. Regardless of who it is, you don’t care.

You’re more than happy to talk him through any of his plans. You become his confidant, his safe haven, his other half.

Regardless of any objections you have, he makes you move in with him. Giving you your own room in his mansion but demanding requesting you sleep with him.

And you do, every night.

You lay still as he buries his nose into your neck and sometimes even his teeth.

Marking you as his for all to see.

An uncaring darling wouldn’t really understand or care that what Elijah was doing was wrong.

He’d watch you for a while going about your normal routine. Completely oblivious to the original vampire stalking you.

Maybe you do see him one day, you smile and wave politely. Which makes his heart beat and head swoon.

When he approaches you he can’t control himself. He takes you immediately. To a place isolated from anyone willing to help you. His family home.

While you sleep he plans for any negative reaction you could give him. What he’d do if you rejected him, screamed, tried to fight him.

Imagine his surprise when you wake as if it’s completely normal. You walk from the room and make yourself comfortable on the sofa. Turning on the TV and quickly finding your favourite channel.

Elijah tries to explain the situation, but you show little interest. Little emotion to being kidnapped.

You hum and nod at him as he tells you he’s claimed you as his, he’s a vampire, you are to live with him now.

He even makes up some more outrageous claims to get a rise out of you. Like his plans to drink your blood, claim your body, fill your womb.

Still you don’t react, too engrossed in your show.

Finally you turn to him and ask if he has any snacks

Bewildered he complies and fetches your desired food from the kitchen.

The rest of your relationship carries on the same.

He does what he wished, you stay pliant. Why fight him, when he’s given you nothing to complain about?

Sure you have limited freedom. But the man had private jets at his disposal. One call and you could be jetting off to Paris, Milan, New York. Anywhere you want to go, Elijah has it covered.

Similarly, anything you desire, the man is waiting with his credit card. Money is no issue for him and he’s happy to spend it all on you.

Over time you do grow fond of the vampire. Enjoying his attention that is forever on you. How deep his obsession goes.

You find little to grumble about and plenty to enjoy.

Elijah is more than pleased with your response to him. Enjoying how easy it is to do things with you.

A darling just as crazy as Kol would work.

Any crazy thing Kol would do to prove his love, you’d triple.

It became sort of like a competiton between the two of you. How crazy could you get?

Arguments over nothing would lead to glasses thrown and rough fucking on the nearest surface.

Despite his yandere tendencies, you love each other like they aren’t even there.

Maybe that’s what draws him to you.

It’s perfect actually.

You were just walking down the grocery store aisle, looking around and a basket on your hand painfully heavy trying to reach for something from the top shelf. 

And that was Kol’s perfect moment.  

He walked up to you taking the can from the top of the shelf that you had been reaching for, and gave you a smirk that forced heat to bottle up in your face. 

The start of the relationship was quite normal to what it could have been.  

A lot of, lying in bed, laughing, talking about whatever came into mind. I mean he is overprotective and little paranoid of you leaving him, but some would just call it cute, and loving.  

It all started to go downhill, when a man started to flirt with you during one of your date nights. You were just getting drinks for yourself and Kol, when it happened and you were too confused to say anything. Good that your boyfriend was there to save you from the drunken man.  

Kol punched the man, before you got you movement back and tearing him from the bar.  

Getting him to bed was a struggle, but when you succeeded, he wouldn’t let you go until you fell asleep.  

When you woke up the sky was still pitch black, but when squinting your eyes, you could see a figure in front of you. Figure that you could recognize no matter what.  

You reached for the lamp next to me and the light surrounded the bedroom.

When Kol first finds out about your sensitivity to loud noises, his brothers are fighting. It’s Klaus and Elijah, downstairs, shouting and screaming. It’s so familiar, and it terrifies you.

You’re in your bedroom, the one you share with Kol, and you can’t help but lift your hands up to cover your ears, scrunching your body up into as near a ball as you can manage. Kol doesn’t see it at first, hearing your heart rate speed up instead.

“What’s wrong?” He sees tears fall down your cheeks. “Hey, Y/N, what’s the matter?”

He moves over to the bed, taking you in his arms and holding you tight. He rests his chin on the top of your head, whispering comforting words to you as you cry on him. “What can I do to make it better?”

“I need them to stop.”

“Who?”

“Klaus. Elijah. I need them to stop shouting. I can’t, it’s too much like-”

You don’t need to finish your sentence. The missing word is one Kol knows. Home. He’s known about what you went through in your childhood since your second date, the day you knew you could really trust him, the day you knew you would always find comfort in him, no matter what.

“It’s okay. I’ll get them to stop. Are you going to be okay?” He looks at you with so much concern in his eyes that you almost want to start crying again. He loves you so much, and it’s something you don’t think you deserve. But as he often reminds you, you do deserve the undying love of Kol Mikaelson.

“I’ll be okay, I promise.”

Kol leans over, and places a gentle kiss on your lips. “I love you, Y/N.”

“Love you too.”

You watch him as he leaves, and you breathe a sigh of relief at the sight of him going to your rescue. Your heart rate has started to slow down know, and you can almost feel calm despite the shouting still going on. It’s the effect that Kol has on you, one of the reasons why you stay with him, even if his family exudes danger at every turn.

And then you hear it. The shouting stops and it transforms into talk. You step out of your room, and you watch the scene that unfolds between the three brothers in the courtyard.

“Can you please keep it down? You’re upsetting Y/N.”

“Well, we’re in the middle of something here, Kol. How about you take your girlfriend somewhere else?” You watch as Kol squares up to Klaus in response to his sarcastic remarks, and your knuckles tense.

“She doesn’t want to go anywhere else. She wants to be at home, which happens to be here. So can you please keep it down? Or maybe you should be the ones to leave.”

You know that there’s a possibility of a fight in the air, and you can’t bear that idea. So you cough ever so slightly, causing Elijah to look up. The older of the Mikaelson brothers looks at you, smiles, and then walks over to his brothers.

“Klaus. He’s right, let’s take this elsewhere.”

Klaus is always one to listen to Elijah, and following his brother’s gaze to you, he nods. The two leave, and you let out a breath you didn’t know you had been holding.

Kol smiles at you, and you mouth a thank you.

Do you think Elejah could have worked?

Y'all aren't going to like this one.

No, I don't and I don't typically even like to think of them as a ship.

First, I think people want to create romantic ships anywhere there is any kind of connection. Elijah clearly is drawn to Elena's innocence and compassion, but to me, it was never romantic. Rather he saw more of Tatia in her and even who he used to be. One reason I never liked Elijah with any doppelganger was because it always just felt like a replacement for his first love. He was trying to hold onto what he lost, which isn't a good foundation for a relationship.

Second, Elijah is my favorite so I like to headcannon that he is above dating minors. All of my favorite ships started with adults. Yes, there are still crazy age gaps but at least with consenting adults. When Elijah met Elena, she was like 17 or maybe 18. While 18 is legally an adult, she was still in high school and very much in a different mindset than Elijah. I know Elijah was attracted to Katherine when she was human, but again, I like to headcannon that she was a little older. It just makes it all less creepy.

But since you asked, I will entertain the thought, but I still don't think they would work.

I personally don't think any crossover from Mystic Falls and New Orleans would work relationship-wise. The Mikaelsons tormented the MF gang. Klaus killed Elena's aunt, her friends, her, etc. By being with Elijah, it would bring her close to Klaus since Elijah would never abandon his family for her.

They also wanted very different things out of life. Elena wanted to live a normal human life. While this is something Elijah may have fantasized about, he would never take the cure and leave his siblings behind. Elena also wanted to stay in Mystic Falls, a place that was far too small and quiet for the Mikaelsons. Elena wanted a quiet human life, something the Mikaelsons would never really have. Choosing to be with Elijah would mean choosing to put herself up against all of their enemies. A quiet life in Mystic Falls would be impossible. Elena would have to sacrifice the life she wanted because we know Elijah wouldn't sacrifice being with his family.

You’re friends were absolutely certain that Klaus was the devil himself. While you wanted to believe them, they had a tendency to leave important details out.

To be honest you weren’t bothered about him. Your plan was to avoid him unless absolutely necessary.

It was during a night at the Grill, which your friends had very much abandoned you at, that you first met him.

You were too drunk to care about the repercussions of accepting a strangers drink. Or what it might lead to.

It lead to the two of you talking, without exchanging names.

So what if the conversation you’d just had was more interesting than any you’d had in the last month.

So what if for the first time in a while you got a chance to bare your soul to someone, who wasn’t rushing to get away to more important business.

So what is your lack of a filter had lead to you shamelessly flirting with the guy.

You assumed he was just as drunk as you.

What surprised you was his lack of sleaziness. He refused your offer of a sleepover as kindly as he could, so as to not hurt your feelings.

It didn’t faze you of course. The alcohol running through your system made sure of that.

He did help you home though. Making sure you got in okay.

It wasn’t until the morning that you found a note left by the guy from the bar.

In neat cursive you read a paragraph of sweet nothings - a love letter of sorts. It filled your insides with warm.

That was until you read the name at the bottom. Klaus Mikaelson.

Any warmth had turned cold. Your body frozen in bed.

It was just your luck. You finally meet a decent guy and he turns out to be the very person you were set to avoid.

It takes you a few minutes to get a hold of yourself.

You realise that he must have been as drunk as you. You were sure this meant nothing, he probably wouldn’t even remember you. Vampires could get drunk to right? Or hybrids for that matter.

Unbeknown to you, it was very much a big deal for him. Talking to you was like walking on air. Of course he could smell the alcohol on your breath and over the course of the night he’d watched you consume copious amounts.

Yet the feeling of you talking so freely to him, like any other person. Like he wasn’t some dangerous villain, that was addictive. And he was desperate for more.

It was later that morning that you’d received a bunch of white roses. The card was in the same cursive handwriting and read ‘Roses as pure as your soul. Klaus’

To him your soul was pure. A rare find at that. He was determined not to let it go.

The roses made you feel uncomfortable so you hid them in a some distant corner of your living room. The purpose was to hide them away so you wouldn’t look at them. But the corner became your new favourite spot.

While recovering from your hangover you contemplated telling your friends. But the thought of the judgment adorning their faces and stressing concerns filled you with distaste.

This wasn’t a big deal, you’d deal with it yourself.

Over the coming days you’d received further love notes, if that’s what you’d call them, flowers of all different kinds and finally his number beneath a note asking you on a date.

You sighed at the writing on the page. You couldn’t go through with this.

You type a message out to him a few times. Filled with apologies if you lead him on that night, apologies for all the trouble he’s gone to. You thanked him a dozen times for all the gifts. But ultimately ended it by telling him you couldn’t accept his proposal. Not while he was causing issues with your friends.

You didn’t receive word from him after you sent that message.

The flowers kept coming, but they were note-less

Klaus was waiting for an opportunity to speak to you in person.

He got his wish when he followed you found you at the local park.

As non-aggressively as possible he brought up your denial to his date. You tried to explain as gently as you could why you couldn’t. He said he understood, but made no move to leave.

Eventually he made some comment about your night at the bar that made you smile. It broke the quiet spell between you two and caused you to apologise profusely while laughing. You told him that was a one off. You were drinking especially hard because your friends had left you hanging.

He takes this as his chance to plant a seed of doubt. Maybe he makes a throw away comment about how they don’t sound like good friends or asks if you’d heard from them since.

He’d talk about his painting and art. You’d share your own experience with art. Whether it was positive or negative.

He offers to show you his collection sometimes and you stop yourself from saying yes. You make some excuse and go to leave.

Not before Klaus can offer to walk you home.

You can’t deny his boyishly handsome face and the way his smile makes him seem like he wouldn’t hurt a fly.

You get home to find Caroline knocking at your door. She’d tried to call you but your phone had mysteriously been turned off.

She sees Klaus and freaks out. Pulling you inside the house.

You don’t need to know that Klaus has already been invited in by you the night he walked you home. Or that he’d been coming by in the night to check you were okay, and see what you’d done with his gifts.

So he leaves with plans to get to you another way.

When there is no Klaus in sight Caroline takes you to meet the group. They tell you about all the awful things Klaus has done and planning to do.

They warn you to stay away from him, telling you that he only wants to get to you to get to Elena.

While you understand their concern, you feel undoubtedly hurt that they assume his only interest in you is because of Elena.

The seed Klaus planted has started to sprout and you think about how they weren’t always the best of friends. How they would sometimes leave you out. Only involving you when it benefited them.

You receive more flowers as the days go by, but this time there’s a drawing of you with them. The pencil sketch shows you sitting at the park. It makes you smile.

But you push any good feelings back and leave the flowers on the porch, taking the drawing and hiding it in a drawer somewhere.

Klaus watches from across the street, like he has been doing all this time. At first it was to see your reaction to the notes. Then it was to try and work out which type of flowers you liked best. Now it was to see what you were doing, since you had been avoiding him.

Seeing you discard his gift and hide his drawing hurt him. He doesn’t expect this kind of thing from you. Never you.

So he decided to move on with his plan. With your friends in the way, you would never be his.

He finds a random vampire roaming Mystic falls and compels them.

Later in the night as your taking the recycling out, you hear a swish behind you. Turning around you see the veiny eyed, sharp toothed vampire behind you.

You scream and make a dash for your house. Falling short of the porch when the vampire latches on to you. He bites your arm and is about to go for your shoulder, when he’s violently pulled off, ripping the skin from where he was biting off as well.

You cry out and can only watch as Klaus uses one of your fence panels to stake the vampire, successfully killing him.

He comes over and gently scoops you up in his arms.

You pass out from the pain and stress of the situation.

When he comes to he’s got you in his bed. Slowly he’s been nursing you back to health.

He tells you that he didn’t want to give you any vampire blood while unconscious. But in reality he wanted to watch as you drank from his wrist. He wanted to hold you in his arms as you let him heal you.

You agree and he gets to do just that. At first you fuss, not used to the taste, but soon relax. He pets your hair while you slowly suck on his wrist.

He feels a sense of power, being the one who saved you and is now healing you.

He makes another throw away comment about how your friends weren’t much help. He asks if you even knew about vampires or vervain.

As you think about it, you realise he’s right. Your friends had given you basic information. But nothing that would have saved your life.

He tells you all about the supernatural world and gives you vervain to drink. Telling you it’s the only way to avoid being compelled by a vampire.

Klaus understands your conflicted feelings towards him. But he’s sure a few more days of his gentle do gooding act and you’ll be his.

He can already tell you’re growing closer to him. And as he’s the only one who’s helped you, you feel inclined to give him a second chance.

Soon you start to think your friends are wrong, their opinions of him are their own. Whatever Klaus has done stops mattering. What matters is what he’s done for you.

You feel indebted to him for saving your life.

So of course you accept any date he asks you on.

And that’s exactly how he wanted you to feel.
