experiencing that "adhd urge to tackle cleaning my bedroom in one whirlwind effort" phenomenon this week

a majority of that effort has been the result of an epiphany that i was getting in "clothing hoarder" territory, with how much i own vs how much i wear. my partner and i split the bedroom 50/50 and i do not exaggerate that a third of my side was packed solid with clothes

it was bad enough that while going through stuff, a solid fourth of it was stuff i had completely forgotten i have, and another fourth of it was stuff i liked enough to buy multiples of so i had a backup when the first one got too worn out (some things, the item was either so cheap and/or i was so in love with them that i had as many as six extra)

i was tired of never having space to even use my side of the room to do more than sleep and use my laptop. of owning a ton of clothes i didn't even necessarily like enough to wear, and a ton more clothes that don't even fit. of owning more crap than i can handle owning

so i formed a rudimentary plan and ran headlong into it. it's been messy, but it's made it lower stress to not have too much structure to my approach beyond a simple "finish one step to completion before moving onto the next." (i would put "simple" in air quotes, but punctuating that would've been awkward. anybody with executive dysfunction can relate to the difficulty of forming and adhering to a granular itinerary)

most of this is rambling, but it might be helpful idk. so far it's looked something like this:

pulling everything out and sorting by like items. putting all duplicates in one bin, and making decisive cuts on which extras i actually need to keep. taking a cursory walk through my definite "yes" pile to see what coords i can make with them

it's made it much gentler for me to have a "yes" bin, a "no definitely not" bin, and a bin for "still thinking about it." (and a fourth bin, but that's the trash can, LOL.) not having to think about it in a black and white "decision now" mentality lets me focus on being brutally honest about whether i love each thing, and whether it's past its prime. yeah i have the skills and tools to repair many types of garment damage, but do i love the item enough to spend the time and effort?

i think the hardest thing has been trying every single thing on to make sure it still fits, and fits in a way i like. it's cruelly hot here. there are some winter things i can barely stand to touch right now, let alone put on my body. i have promised myself that i will revisit the off-season bin when it's on-season... but i did suffer through the fall clothes since that's a majority of my clothing, and it's my favs

having that "maybe" bin has also given me the ability to distance myself from the items and marinate. i looked through my maybes one day later, and found making a concrete yes/no was much easier. like the off-season bin, i have promised myself that i will revisit the "maybes" in six months to see if my feelings on them have changed

which, i cannot emphasize enough. clearly label every bin and bag while you're pruning--and date it!!! that way you'll know the last time you went through that particular bin. i didn't have any lingering receipts or anything to go by, but i know that some of these stored clothes have gone untouched for literally a decade. be kind to yourself and never let yourself say "etc, stuff, or misc" either. if you do that, you will have to open it to know what's in it, every single time. if it's a mixture of things--like scarves, belts, ties--write each thing on it. i also don't recommend a blanket "accessories" label on any "yes" bins for the same reason

it's taken me three days to get this far, and i'm just past halfway going through things i think, but i think i've gotten my clothing possessions down by 30-50% with my first pass over everything

once i have all my definite "no"s culled, i am going to make a second pass over everything in my "yes"es to see if they're all still definitely "yes"es. same with the "maybes." i know i can shrink it all down further, but i need to trim the fat before i can work with the meat, to sound like a butcher for a minute

it's been exhausting and very time consuming, but it's also long overdue and i have multiple spoon-adjacent energy restrictions working against me. sometimes the best self-care you can give yourself is getting rid of what you don't need anymore, so you can appreciate and focus on what you do need and love

(yeah, part of it is me looking for stuff that's in good enough condition to see if i can get a resale shop to take it, money is getting that tight... but god i am drowning in belongings and i cannot stand it anymore nefeysfnstksfnstksfnstksfnstnm)

I that it’s wierd you have an issue with HtR hunters, but not like mortal hunters

then again you do seem like the person who would berate someone for joining the second Inquisition

I would berate someone for joining the IRL FBI, CIA or US military, so yeah a right wing vigilante group known for drone strikes, bombings and arsons on US soil? Against civilian targets? With such little regard for collateral damage or how many of their own people are sacrificed to bring down a handful of vampires? I'd have a problem with that, for the same reasons I have issues with right wing militias and the War on Terror (and the War on Drugs) now. You seem like the type of person to think the Imperium are the unironic good guys in 40k, and that RoboCop was an aspirational movie.

I think mortal hunters are fine, because plenty of vampires and shit are evil, and people have a right to defend themselves. There needs to be consequences for breaking the masquerade or flexing your powers without being careful or the game doesn't work. I just think the SI works best as an antagonist, being made up of evil real life organizations known for brutalizing civilians, deep corruption, and a jingoistic attitude towards military engagement. It makes sense to me that mortal hunters who join are gonna be used as disposable foot soldiers by an organization like that. Plus vampires VS the government? Pretty cool, and it makes sense. The department of defense would cream their pants if they found out that vampires are real, and they could leverage all their spending on 'terrorism' against the new threat. It's the modern war hawk's wet dream.

Imbued I think are dumb because I dislike it when people have super powers that don't come with inherent drawbacks and don't have a Halloween monster theme in World of Darkness, a game about monsters. They read to me like a weird Christian fascist fantasy about being some kind of paladin who hunts degenerate urbanites, and seem more at home in some kind of flash-in-the-pan marvel Disney+ series than a horror role playing game. Does it not kind of ruin the point of being a disadvantaged mortal fighting back against the monsters if you're just another supernatural, except with no cost to your powers? If you're not a Hunter because you've faced abuse from a monster and chosen to fight back with what little you have, but because an angel told you to be? It's like you won't play the hardest WoD game line without cheat codes. Lame. I have similar issues with most sorcerers in oWoD, kinnian, and mummies. From what I've seen CofD does a much better job in making sure that no supernatural power comes without a cost. That superhero shit is lame and makes the whole setting feel so dated and juvenile. Take that shit back to Mutants and Masterminds where it belongs.

Not to mention, there's no theme that the Imbuned cover that Werewolf doesn't cover better. Zealotry, the downfalls of a good vs evil ideology? The inherent issues of a warrior culture? Trying to square being a holy warrior against evil with the shades of grey the real world is cast in? It's all in werewolf, and with much more dimension and depth. HtR hunters can't even claim the underdog title over the Garou because they have the aforementioned superpowers with no drawbacks.

WoD got big back in the day because it felt cool and contemporary. If you want it to retain that effect for a modern audience, you have to cut the stupid shit that makes it feel dated and the Satanic Panic era propaganda is the second thing that's gotta be cut to do that. (The first thing being the rampant orientalism and racial stereotyping that soaks the setting). I'm sure in 10-20 years lots of stuff in the 5th Ed line will need to go through some kind of pruning again to fit whatever the shape of the world is by then. Having "modern" in the description line of your game just comes with that consequence.

And I don't wanna hear about how the drawback is they "know about the supernatural now" every single WoD player character deals with that, mortal or otherwise. It's not a drawback, it's an inherent part of the setting.

Unless you were talking about my issue with HtR5th in which case I think you misunderstand me, I don't really have a strong opinion on 5th edition Hunter other than that I'm glad they cut out Imbuned.

Huh, looks like there’s a theory going around based on some of the revelations from the end of Traum that the Alien God’s World might actually be Chaldeas, the simulation of Earth 100 years in the future in Chaldea’s command room.

Part of this comes from the inconsistencies in David Bluebook’s descriptions of the bleaching vs how it happened with the Crypters, the level of tech David uses and his description of Area 51′s tech vs how Chaldea describes it at the and of Traum (David describes it as old and out of date and Chaldea as cutting edge), and the amount of time the “alien” had been in Area 51 being experimented on. This further affirms the idea, for me at least, that the “alien” was likely Olga herself after being cast in Chaldeas.

Chaldeas also works suspiciously like the Fantasy Trees, creating a fairly accurate simulated future history, for the Trees from the point of pruning until the present and for Chaldeas from the present to 100 years in the future. This makes me wonder if the “bleaching” of PHH is actually the simulated post-bleach Chaldeas pinned over PHH in some way similar to how the pinned Lostbelts overwrite their section of the bleached Earth. This also opens up possibilities for saving PHH, since we’d just have to unpin Chaldeas instead of actually unbleaching the Earth.

If this theory is true, it feels like the pieces are all starting to come together. Only things I still feel in the dark about about is Marisbury’s place in all this and the true nature of Singularity F...

Dating British style, baby!* It’s been quiet on the Bambi front, I know.   Good news is that it should be ready in a day or two.  I’ve re-written it four or five times?   Just to put into perspective for how many words are on the page vs how many words make up the story:  1,700 (rounded up) are being used out of a total of 5,000 (rounded down).  Names have changed.  Tones have changed.  Things have been pruned left, right and centre.  I might need to look into improving my work flow... 🤔

In between now and then, there’s been a few more stories (obviously), and umpteen different ones part written.  My ADHD makes me hop around a lot between them, so there’s normally dozens of plates spinning.  The fact is, a lot of them won’t go beyond that stage: Either the idea doesn’t work, or they’re too similar to recent ideas I’ve used, or it’s hard to nail down the thread that runs through them.  Honestly, it’s what makes shorter, vertical slices, much easier to write.

There are a couple of potentially longer pieces in the work:  A pair of lovers summoning something that goes bump in the night (and bedroom?), and a sorority getting serious with the ol’ team try of extreme product placement.  Ah, that last one will make more sense if I get around to finishing it off.  Anyhow, I’ve been writing on and off for most of the day, so I deserve a break.  For once.   It sometimes happens, okay?

India vs Sri Lanka, 3rd ODI: Shikhar Dhawan Seek Fringe Benefits

India vs Sri Lanka: The ODI series is already within the bag, but Dravid might not want to ring in wholesale changes on Friday, because the home team has shown improvement with each passing fixture.

Ahead of his first assignment as India coach, Rahul Dravid had made it clear that he cannot make an equivalent promise to the 20 players on the road in Sri Lanka that he usually does when he oversees the country’s developmental teams – a promise of each player playing a minimum of one game before returning home. With half India’s white-ball regulars currently in England, the squad strength for the Sri Lanka ODI series has been pruned to fifteen, with the main target solely on winning.

The ODI series is already within the bag, but Dravid might not want to ring in wholesale changes on Friday, because the home team has shown improvement with each passing fixture. Devdutt Padikkal and Ruturaj Gaikwad, two of India’s six uncapped players from the long list, are possibly the brightest talents to possess seamlessly graduated from the domestic circuit to the IPL. Now they eagerly await the ultimate promotion to don India’s blue.

From among those that did get a chance to prove their worth within the two matches gone, Prithvi Shaw and Ishan Kishan are going to be keen to solidify their respective game plans. Sri Lanka has twice dismissed Shaw using spin – which the youngster is understood to otherwise dominate. On the evidence of his past showings, Shaw is equally adept against pace too. Wanindu Hasaranga threatened to win the last match on his own together with his leg-spin, while pacer Dushmantha Chameera has had his moments. On the opposite side of the card, Charith Asalanka and Chamika Karunaratne have both got runs. This opposition might not be as great as a number of the Sri Lankan outfits of yore, but Dasun Shanaka’s side has refused to roll over. The young men during this Indian team will have best to closely adhere to Dravid’s advice.

SO when caleb n tommy announced tht they’d signed up to the army lana ws understandably…….. blindsided. she ws rly upset tht they were leaving like pretty besides herself bt she tried not to b mad at them n made them promise theyd b safe n back as soon as possible. she even asked if they cld somehow take her w them n they were jst like :/ it doesn’t work that way luv x

(death tw, ptsd tw, grief tw, trauma tw, hospitalisation tw, drugs tw) anyway caleb ended up getting discharged under grounds of severe ptsd when he witnessed tommy die in an explosion tht took place in a shock raid. caleb returned home sans tommy bt he was never the same after tht. he’s been in n out of hospital n he turned to using as a way to cope so it’s been a rly bumpy road since. lana kind of felt like two of her brothers died out there in a way n jst like tht it wasn’t them vs the world any mre, it was jst her

Hi i was wondering about how Ireland's political climate contemporary to the writing of the Táin affected the work? i. e. Christianity vs native Irish myths and suchlike? that might be a vague/ hard to answer question sorry

Well, by the time the Táin (as it exists now) was written, paganism was kind of old news. It wasn't exactly the hot-button issue of the day; Ireland had been Christianised for a few centuries and there's little evidence in the text that it was still a source of contemporary anxiety, unlike arguably in earlier texts. As far as its writers were concerned, "native Irish" material wasn't something that was in conflict with the church; it was being written and created within the church. (Even from an early stage, the most Otherworldly stories are frequently the most Christian ones.)

It's true that Recension 1 (Lebor na hUidre/Yellow Book of Lecan) contains more supernatural elements than Recension 2 (Book of Leinster), suggesting maybe some discomfort with the seemingly non-Christian elements of the story leading to some judicious pruning of the text, but given how close they are in date, that's more likely to be the sensibilities of LL's redactor at work rather than broader societal shifts in attitude.

In many ways the Táin is a curiously apolitical work. (I think that's why it lends itself to use and reuse by different groups of wildly different opinions -- see, for example, the use of images of Cú Chulainn in political murals and artwork for both unionist and republican ends.) It doesn't appear to engage too directly with contemporary concerns and issues. Maybe that's because the versions we have are later developments from an earlier story (eleventh century narratives drawing on a ninth century one, perhaps), so issues that were no longer relevant got smoothed out. Maybe it's just not what the story is interested in. It's far more influenced by other texts, including Classical stories like Togail Troí -- Brent Miles has a book on this. It's a product of contemporary literary interest, rather than social issues.

By comparison, if you want a text that really reflects society, look at Acallam na Senorach. Despite being set in the past, the story is saturated in contemporary political concerns -- church reform, monogamy, ecclesiastical primacy (will it be Kildare or Armagh?), the development of a secular literary elite and the value of literature as art. It permeates the text on a dozen levels. Understanding what's going on in twelfth century Ireland is practically essential for Acallam na Senorach to make sense.

But the Táin just... is what it is, set in a vague mythological past. I think it tells us very little about the political climate of the periods when it was composed. Perhaps there are layers to it that I'm missing, but it seems to me a story that's far more interested in literature and aesthetic and reworking other stories than one that reflects contemporary political concerns.

2019 has been rough...

& it's Not Even October Yet

So, on top of personal mental health issues and family members having their own battles, and work being unpredictable with my shifts, a lot has happened with the non-human side of the family, not all good... not much good as far as my mental health tries to put it (I often need to be reminded to step back and see the "then vs now" of it all), so I'll try to do an update on that to the best of my memory (I've always been bad at remembering dates - I would forget my own birthday if people didn't fuss about it)

Sometime between January & February, a heatwave was the final straw for Cabaré who had been fighting a scale tumor (I know, my fault for not researching dragon scale variants before getting him) for 3 months, aside from the tumor, he was as active as he normally was, eating fine and his fins were recovering nicely from the fin nipping, but 45°C IN the flat with the air con running was stressful enough before the power started to cut.

Late February, a tank heater malfunctioned and killed a couple of my tetra before I caught it, thankfully, not too much trouble was caused and I had a spare heater on hand, various issues have stopped me from getting new stock for the shoal however, so it currently stands at 7 black neon tetra.

March... hooboi... uh, as much as I was meant to have a milestone birthday that month, the month was utter chaos... Shakita, my Gran's beloved Am.Staf previously posted about, had her age catch up in the space of a fortnight and had to be laid to rest. Another event, regarding people, unfolded days later that made it tempting to remove all reminders of the month altogether, looking for a timeline in chats from family, someone already has.

Early April, I had flown interstate on a holiday I'd organised around Xmas, so I allowed tank/pond plants to grow out; a mild regret in now I have to sift shrimp out of a 8×10×5 inch ball prism of moss before i can trim, seperate or transplant it. Amidst this, I also had gotten a female Betta; Beau-bo, named after Critical Role's Beauregard, I had intended to have a female in a display next to Cabaré just a few months earlier, but due to...reasons, I had let the empty tanks (quarantine + Cabaré's) go un maintained at all, a bad move that I'm still trying to fix in my own slowbutt pace, so she was put in beside the matten filter of the shimp/tetra tank. I managed to lose 1 of 3 rescue orchids but have had decent success with most of the terrestrial plants I've gathered admittedly with a few close calls. I also recieved news around late April/early May that a friend of mine needed to rehome their 4ft tank, so I set out to rearrange my flat so it could fit... this turned out to be a 3 month task as different bills and problems would pop up, including a vet trip for Ludwig who sprained his wrist, and we decided to get bloods checked for any nasties; an overactive thyroid gland due to age was causing his metabolism&appetite to soar, so a prescription was given.

I kept quiet about it, but I got some zebra danios for my little basin-ponds at around Xmas last year, the planted/natural filter pond having mild success breeding, however, winter and personal issues haven't allowed me to see whether the bubs made it through winter (I had to go away for a while and the ones I could find were 1.5cm when I did get to check - it will be a matter of headcount once time/weather allows me to get back in there)

So between June and August, I had been preparing for and focusing on the 4ft tank (my first tank over 2ft), especially when I was challenged to scape it. Thus far, the plants I was expecting to grow slow have gone mad and are due for another pruning, while the plants I expected to go mad and fill in are taking their time still. I have all 3 of the same fish that came with the tank (I was scaping it wet - not something I recommend with fine and/or planting substrates), 2 Angels and a Cory, however the quarantine tank I'd set up for the new cories (to give Dusty a shoal of his own) crashed (again, my fault for prioritizing other things) and I thought I saved 1, but he didn't make it through the next day, so that was a big bummer. I've only had the energy to do mild plant tending and water changes since. My cousin's household has also gained a few more sets of paws from G.A.P, so Jojo now has siblings that are his own size (almost - he was always tall).

And then we get to September, specifically this past week... Ludwig, the mascot & icon of this blog, got out and went missing after plumbers made a lot of ruckus (like, scared me awake in my flat next door noise), today is day 5 without his medications and mum has been beside herself about it. But we couldn't let ourselves be too shaken as we were in order to recieve a rescue Greyhound to try and help my little sister with her mental health. Scout, a huge 9 month old pup who was pulled before being raced due to injury arrived earlier today.

So, that's how the year has been playing in regards to my nonhuman fam and a little about the human part.

Hopefully, Ludwig finds his way home (we've notified council and neighbours, but 8ish years ago, vets refused to microchip him because he was already over 5yrs), and I hope to get back in the habit of photographing things, but that might have to wait for my phone to be repaired and my head to have cleared a little.

I have been vaguely active on my new started in April while I was interstate Instagram account with the same name as my main blog (it is just as eclectic as that main blog too, probably)
