The Pre-Timeline of Dimension 20

Just because I've seen a lot of confusion about this following the release of The Roll of a Lifetime: How Dimension 20 Sold Out Madison Square Garden, in which the story of how Dimension 20 got started is edited in such a way that viewers come away with an odd impression about the timeline, I thought I'd put together as clear and annotated a timeline as I can of how and when the Intrepid Heroes met, got into D&D, and got cast in Dimension 20, plus some of the greater context they were operating in. All of this is publicly available information, gleaned mostly from years of interviews, Adventuring Parties, NADDPod Short Rests, and social media posts.

1998: Noted science-fiction author Elaine Lee signs her ten-year-old son Brennan up for a Dungeons & Dragons game at October Country, a local comics and gaming shop, in order to provide him with a social and creative outlet after having to start homeschooling him due to pervasive bullying at school. Within weeks, he begins running his own games for fellow children.

December 1999: CollegeHumor.com launches, posting user-submitted funny and/or titillating content from around the web. Within a few years, banner ad revenue and merch sales have made its founders young tech millionaires. By 2004 they are hiring writers to produce original content.

August 2006: CollegeHumor is acquired by InterActive Corp. Shortly thereafter, Sam Reich is hired to produce video content on the strength of videos he'd posted online of his improv team Dutch West.

April 2007: CollegeHumor staff writers Jake Hurwitz and Amir Blumenfeld begin posting videos of themselves performing absurdist sketches in their downtime at work; this inspires the long-running Hardly Working series, in which CollegeHumor staff appear as heightened versions of themselves in the office.

2008: Brian Murphy is hired to answer phones at the CollegeHumor offices. He soon begins writing for the website and appearing in videos, striking up a nerdy friendship with staff artist Caldwell Tanner.

2011: Emily Axford is hired by CollegeHumor as part of a wave of new talent as the original CollegeHumor cast moves on to bigger opportunities. She and Murph are memorably cast as romantic interests in Jake & Amir videos; some time later, they begin dating.

Early 2014: CollegeHumor's video team relocates to Los Angeles in order to establish themselves as a traditional TV production house, including shows like Adam Ruins Everything and the Jake and Amir series Lonely and Horny. Murph and Emily are among the cast who make the move. They marry in September and begin developing the TV sketch show Hot Date.

Early 2015: Siobhan Thompson, Zac Oyama, and Grant O'Brien are hired to write and act in sketches for CollegeHumor as cast turnover continues. Emily and Siobhan become close friends, and Zac bonds with Murph and Emily over anime.

August 2015: Jake and Amir, having quit CollegeHumor earlier that year, start the podcast network Headgum, whose initial slate of podcasts is shows by other CollegeHumor alums.

November 2015: Brennan Lee Mulligan wins $50,000 on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, pays back a loan for medical expenses, and begins the process of relocating to Los Angeles to pursue more opportunities in production and development.

July 2016: Siobhan throws herself a birthday party, inviting people she knows from doing comedy in New York and Los Angeles. At the party, Emily overhears Brennan talking about D&D and corners him to ask him to run a game for her and her friends. During the conversation, Zac turns around, asking what they're talking about, and gets invited too. Siobhan, Zac, Emily, Murph, and Adam Ruins Everything producers Jon Wolf and Travis Helwig start playing in a home game with Brennan DMing. Murph plays a paladin, Emily a druid, Siobhan a ranger, and Zac a monk.

Around the same time: Lou Wilson meets Brennan through Upright Citizens Brigade (where Brennan coaches improv) and begins playing in a different home game as a barbarian. Both of these games are played in 3.5, Brennan's preferred edition of Dungeons & Dragons at the time.

September 2016: Murph, Emily and Caldwell start 8 Bit Book Club, a podcast about video game adaptations, on the Headgum network.

April 2017: Ally Beardsley is hired (along with Raphael Chestang and Rekha Shankar) to join the CollegeHumor sketch-video cast, as Siobhan has left to pursue other opportunities and Murph and Emily are busy with Adam Ruins Everything and Hot Date. During this round of hiring, Brennan is considered but doesn't make the cut, although a few months later he is hired part-time to write questions for Um, Actually. Ally and Zac become close friends and perform improv together.

Summer 2017: Zac leaves CollegeHumor to write on a new season of Adam Ruins Everything. Rather than go through another round of auditions and hires, Sam bumps Brennan up to main cast.

Fall 2017: Wanting more of a return out of their investment, IAC insists on CollegeHumor starting its own streaming service. Existing staff are required to pitch original shows. Brennan is halfway through writing a pitch document for a TTRPG actual play, citing the success of The Adventure Zone and Critical Role, when he is called into a meeting and asked how he would feel about DMing an actual play.

October 2017: Brian Murphy guests on If I Were You, Jake and Amir's flagship podcast, and explains Dungeons & Dragons. Jake is intrigued, Amir not so much.

November 2017: Dimension 20 begins the planning stages. For the next three months, Brennan works with producer David Kerns, coordinator Ebony Hardin, director Michael Schaubach and designer Rick Perry to develop a unique set, feel, and pace for the show. After some chemistry test games, the initial cast is set as Brian Murphy, Emily Axford, Siobhan Thompson, Zac Oyama, Lou Wilson, and Rekha Shankar, who has never played before.

December 2017: At a Headgum Christmas party, Jake Hurwitz corners Murph and suggests that they start a D&D podcast so that Jake can play.

January 18, 2018: Murph, Emily, Caldwell and Jake announce Not Another D&D Podcast on an episode of 8 Bit Book Club.

February 7, 2018: The first shooting day of Fantasy High, which will be the first season of Dimension 20. Only a few weeks before shooting, Rekha has a scheduling conflict and can't fit Dimension 20 in between her duties as head writer of CollegeHumor's sketches and developing other shows for Dropout; Ally Beardsley becomes her replacement at the Dimension 20 table. It is Ally's first time playing D&D at all; it is Brennan, Zac, Siobhan, and Lou's first time playing 5th edition. Earlier that day, Brennan shoots the first CEO video, which will net him viral notoriety and a vocal fanbase within the CollegeHumor audience, with an undercurrent of "finally, a straight white man" to the praise.

February 8, 2018: The first campaign episode of Not Another D&D Podcast is released. It releases weekly thereafter, and they are 32 episodes in and have done their first live show before Dimension 20 premieres.

September 26, 2018: The first two episodes of Fantasy High are available when Dropout goes live. It is the immediate breakout hit of the platform, so much so that the second season, The Unsleeping City, goes into production while Fantasy High is airing; but because it will take so long to edit before it's ready to air, a short "sidequest" is filmed in a weekend with Matt Mercer, Erika Ishii, Amy Vorpahl and Ify Nwadiwe from the online gaming world and Mike Trapp and Rekha from CollegeHumor to tide the audience over, establishing D20's production rhythms for the next several years.

Okay okay I'm here to clear this up once and for all.

Near's birthday is the 24th of August 1991. 1991 + 18 = 2009. Therefore, on the 24th of August 2009, Near turns 18. The official manga timeline is written in Volume 13, and can also be loosely followed along via dates scattered throughout the main story. The anime timeline shifts everything forward by 3 years, but major dates do not change.

We are introduced to Near and Mello in Chapter 59, on the day that they learn of L's death. This scene then continues in Chapter 61. The official date for this is December 5th, 2004, which makes Near 13 and Mello 14. Mello leaves the orphanage, and Near is handed the case. Near starts investigating on his own from this point forward.

Chapter 60 opens with a summary of events from 2005 to 2009. When we next see Near, he is meeting the U.S. president and presenting the evidence he has collected over the duration of the timeskip. The date given for this meeting is March 5th, 2009. The SPK is then established on March 12th, 2009. At this time, Near is 17.

Continuing with the Chapter 60 summary, we are given exposition that Kira's ideals gain momentum throughout the summer of 2009. We then see Mello and Near again for the first time when it is revealed that Mello kidnapped the NPA director. It can be assumed that the exposition summarises the months of June-August 2009, which places us no earlier than September when the story picks back up again. This is confirmed in Volume 13, which states that the NPA director is kidnapped on the 8th of October. Near is 18.

From Chapters 61-107, Near remains 18 throughout the entire duration of the story. The epilogue in Chapter 108 is dated January 28th 2011; Near is 19. The C-Kira oneshot is dated February 2013; Near is 21. The A-Kira oneshot is dated May 2019; Near is 27.

August 31 Private Eye announced that John and Yoko’s forthcoming album would have a full-frontal nude cover. September 15 Around this date, John and Yoko photographed themselves in the nude, from the front and rear, intending to use the shots as cover artwork for their rst collaborative album. November 11 John: “Originally, I was going to record Yoko, and I thought the best picture of her for an album would be naked. So after that, when we got together, it just seemed natural for us both to be naked. Of course, I’ve never seen my prick out on an album before.”

Autumn 1968:

As the meeting was drawing to a weary close, John, not this day with Yoko, who hadn’t seemed particularly connected with what was going on, said he wanted to play us a tape he and Yoko had made. He got up and put the cassette into the tape machine and stood beside it as we listened. The soft murmuring voices did not at first signal their purpose. It was a man and a woman but hard to hear, the microphone having been at a distance. I wondered if the lack of clarity was the point. Were we even meant to understand what was going on, was it a kind of artwork where we would not be able to put the voices into a context, and was context important? I felt perhaps this was something John and Yoko were examining. But then, after a few minutes, it became clear. John and Yoko were making love, with endearments, giggles, heavy breathing, both real and satirical, and the occasional more direct sounds of pleasure reaching for climax, all recorded by the faraway microphone. But there was something innocent about it too, as though they were engaged in a sweet serious game. John clicked the off button and turned again to look toward the table, his eyebrows quizzical above his round glasses, seemingly genuinely curious about what reaction his little tape would elicit. However often they’d shared small rooms in Hamburg, whatever they knew of each other’s love and sex lives, this tape seemed to have stopped the other three cold. Perhaps it touched a reserve of residual Northern reticence. After a palpable silence, Paul said, “Well, that’s an interesting one.” The others muttered something and the meeting was over.

I was up on the flat roof [in Rishikesh] meditating and I’d seen a troupe of monkeys walking along in the jungle and a male just hopped on to the back of this female and gave her one, as they say in the vernacular. The song’s (very) slightly risqué lyric, all two lines of it, heightened the vague air of controversy surrounding the album. McCartney was already in trouble with the press for allowing a minuscule nude picture of himself to be included on the set’s free poster.

oh my god. i love that this is not something everyone knows anymore. but it's also absolutely fucking insane to me that this knowledge could potentially be lost. it's the biggest piece of context necessary for understanding them.

they were outed in 2011 on a smaller scale and again in 2012 on a massive scale, both times by the same video.

on september 17th of 2011 there was a platform wide glitch on youtube where, at random, a bunch of videos that had been uploaded and listed as private were suddenly unprivatized.

one of the videos that was unprivatized was a deeply earnest private message to dan that phil uploaded on february 13th of 2010, because dan was in india with his family and it was their first valentine's day together. there are a lot of intimate details about their early relationship in this video.

it gets called the vday or valentine's day video by phannies because it was titled ":3".

it was only up for a couple hours, but there are posts from phannies within that span. they reached out to people asking that it not be circulated with a poor cover story (that it was a prank they thought better of because it would be too mean).

people did not publicly circulate it for a period of time, but on halloween of 2012 it got posted publicly and got spread everywhere immediately. that's the second and more major outing.

in the years of like, 2013 thru the end of tatinof era at least but likely longer than that? if it got posted anywhere publicly it would get copyright struck by phil and removed. i don't have a definitive end date but the copyright strikes aren't still happening.

the leak is absolutely what lead to the peak era of dan and phil's closeting. understanding their need for control and how momentous it is that they trust us with anything requires knowledge of this context, imo.

i don't reccomend watching it. i haven't in some time.

i am open about the fact that i did watch it as a teenager in november of 2012, back when it was still circulating on tumblr. when i returned a couple weeks later to rewatch it, the entire blog i'd originally seen it on had been nuked for copyright infringement, and that wasn't uncommon for the era.

it was a really bad time in the phandom. dan briefly made a "customer service" sideblog & vehemently shut down people speculating on his sexuality/relationship with phil.

all of the archival information we have on dan and phil—the dailybooths, the formsprings, the old tweets, the videos they've taken off their channels, liveshows, vyous, etc? so much of that information was saved despite dan and phil trying to eradicate it in the immediate aftermath of the leak.

it's incredible that we still have it all, and even more incredible that images from phannie archives have made it into their videos several times from 2019 onward. their relationship with us has changed so drastically since 2012, in ways beyond what we could've imagined at the time.

yes, they were outed. that's the context for everything.

Penck, he was encouraged to work fluidly between painting and drawing. ‘I [loved] to draw every day and the scrawled sketches, never shown to anybody, started piling up’, Nara has said. ‘Like journal entries reflecting the events of each day, they sometimes intersected [with] memories from the past. I Never was a fan of Larry but still curious about it. Most things look very far fetched to me and I don’t understand how people believe in it.

But there are a few things that keep me uncertain and left me wondering:

1) when fetus Harry answered that he and Louis are dating. Like why?

2) Mario interview when they used sex innuendo (who push who)

3) why Harry moved in with Louis?

4) Adore you my and book Louis the fish references

Can you please explain/debunk them? Tell what you think?

Hey, thanks! I'm glad you like it.

I hope you realize that each of these debunks, by definition, has to be quite long. We're talking about a decade and a half of lore. It's quite a bit of work. I'd appreciate it if from now on, you'd send them in separate asks, because I don't really know if I can fit it all in one post.

1- "When fetus Harry answered that he and Louis are dating. Like why?"

First of all, I hate the term "fetus Harry." I hate this whole classifying Harry by "eras" as if he was a Pokemon that evolved. It's dehumanizing.

Harry did not say that he and Louis were dating. That's a typical Larrie lie—taking what actually happened out of context.

Let's actually give it the context it needs.

From late 2010 on, fans "shipped" all the guys together in a bunch of different pairings. Larry was the most popular one, with Niam—Niall and Liam—not far behind. Harry and Louis were actually very close friends for a hot second, and the band in general was very online. They did Twitcams all the time, and followed and replied to fans constantly. One Direction and Justin Bieber spearheaded what's today known as Stan Twitter.

Larry was a joke everyone participated in. For instance the following two screenshots come from the same blog.

The post about Eleanor is from February 24 2012, and the post about Larry from February 27. Same year, same blog—three days apart.

So, how did it go from a joke to a conspiracy theory?

When One Direction first got put together, Louis had a girlfriend called Hannah. For the most part, fans of the band really liked her. Louis met Eleanor in March 2011, seemingly cheated on Hannah with Eleanor, broke up with Hannah in late July 2011, and by mid September 2011 was openly dating Eleanor.

Fans did not take well to this (even though the whole cheating thing wasn't really known). In fact, in late 2011 and early 2012, the main issue Louis defended Eleanor from wasn't conspiracy theorists, but fans of Hannah that wanted her back.

When he tweeted this—note the YOU in all caps...

It was because that day was Hannah's birthday and fans were tweeting up a storm about wanting Louis and Hannah back together. They were also tweeting pictures of them together and allegedly even sent those pictures to Eleanor directly.

Louis felt bad and defensive, so he decided to tweet that.

Parallel to this, since about late 2011, a group of people on Tumblr were taking the whole Larry thing seriously—going from joking about it to trying to prove it was actually real. It was a very small number of weirdos, and it would've probably never taken off had this whole Eleanor/Hannah thing not happened at the same time as Harry was starting to date Caroline Flack, who was 15 years Harry's senior.

Harry had been linked to other women before, but he was seen with Caroline a bit, was asked about it in interviews, and they interacted some on social media, which enraged fans. They mostly claimed it was the age gap (which would've been a fair criticism), but it was clear that for most the problem was jealousy (which is not fair at all).

In the context of Louis dumping the girlfriend the fandom liked and getting with someone they didn't, and Harry dating an older woman they definitely didn't like, impressionable fans started to get swayed more and more by conspiracy theories.

At first, it was a majority of jokes and a small number of people believing the conspiracy theories, but over time, slowly, it started to shift. Between 2010 and 2012, you could be just "A Larry shipper"—someone who liked them together and joked about it. From 2013 on, Larry shippers were basically extincted, replaced instead by "Larries", conspiracy theorists who truly believed they were together and tried to prove it.

When it was mostly jokes, Harry, Louis, and their friends and family, would go along with them. Almost all of "Larry proof" is those early stages, when there wasn't an actual conspiracy theory that was widespread yet and everyone followed along with the jokes.

Harry and Louis were close friends, and their moms also became quite close (they were of a similar age, similar area, background, both divorced, etc). Everyone went along with it. Until it started to get out of hand.

Now, if Louis was defensive about the whole Louhannah thing, I think you can only imagine how defensive he would get about the whole Larry thing when it started to cross over into conspiracy territory...

Fans not only insulted Eleanor, but started to directly harass her. They would email her university to "prove" that she wasn't who she said she was. They made theories about who her father was (Eleanor has posted her dad on Snapchat—it is not, in fact, a billionaire working for Jive Records). There was a whole whack ass theory about her having a twin/triplets... They started involving Louis' family—mainly his mom and sisters. They would pressure them to "confirm" Larry, and they'd get upset whenever it was denied.

Louis' sisters were quite young—Lottie was 13/14, Fizzy was 11/12, and the twins were 9/10 when all of this was brewing. They looked up to Eleanor, who became like an older sister to them, and they got pretty defensive of her, as little kids often do.

So, in turn, Louis got more upset at the whole thing and would often go on rants on Twitter to deny it. Eleanor and Louis' best friend, Stan, would also tweet alongside him. Sadly, this contributed to the proliferation of the conspiracy. The more attention he brought onto it, the worse it became. I don't blame him for it, to be perfectly clear, but that's just a version of the Streisand effect.

This whole thing unfolded between late 2011 and late 2012. It wasn't immediate. It wasn't that one day everyone was joking and the next everyone was a conspiracy theorist. It shifted slowly.

So, that's the context.

The interaction you mention happened March 17th 2012. One Direction was doing a signing in Boston. Their debut album, Up All Night, had come out March 13th in America, so they were signing that. A fan approached the table and talked to all the guys. Harry was last in line. When she got to him, Harry gave her a smile and she asked him, "Are you and Louis dating?" Harry looked quite tired (they all did) and didn't seem particularly amused by the question. He just nodded. The fan pressed, "You are?" to which Harry gave her a lazy, "Yeah." Then the fan said, "I figured," and, as she was ushered to leave the line, Harry gave her a lazy smile.

He didn't say they were dating. He just went along with a fan who joked about it. She was JOKING.

This is from the fan who asked this question, THE DAY after she asked the question. Not much of a Larrie if she's fantasizing about Harry romantically, huh? But I have more confirmation.

She actually thinks it's ridiculous that people are still going on about it, and thinks her question was "stupid". She quite literally wanted him to date Taylor Swift later that year...

She also confirmed that Harry was "being sarcastic":

So the fact that thirteen years later we're still having this conversation is insane. This is the person that took the video. She was never even a conspiracy theorist to begin with. She just liked them together.

And this is 100% the same fan. Her name is the same in both accounts (Daena), and she linked her old Twitter handle in the description of the video. It used to be YMCMBelieb. She has changed her Twitter handle since 2012, but if you search the old one on Twitter today, you'll find people replying to "Pogue_Malone."

Larries take Harry smiling at her "I figured" as him "being moved by her support." He was smiling at a fan who had paid to get his signature. He smiled at her when she first approached him, then smiled again as she left. The fan DIDN'T EVEN ACTUALLY THINK HE WAS WITH LOUIS. She was JOKING.

I'm going to answer #2 in this post but I'll move to separate posts for the other two.

2- Mario interview when they used sex innuendo (who push who)

I'm adding this one here because it's just the same exact thing as we just went over. It was a joke. Harry and Louis are BRITISH.

British humour carries a strong element of satire aimed at the absurdity of everyday life. Common themes include sarcasm, tongue-in-cheek, banter, insults, self-deprecation, taboo subjects, puns, innuendo, wit, and the British class system. These are often accompanied by a deadpan delivery which is present throughout the British sense of humour.

The "Mario Kart" interview happened in February 16th 2012. Combine your typical British humor with the context of how the fandom treated the whole "Larry" thing in early 2012" and you have your answer.

They're just joking. I don't know what else to tell you. They're joking. They're not openly discussing their sex life in an interview. Larries need to choose—were they a closeted couple that was forced to have fake girlfriends and limit their interactions in public or were they telling the world what sexual positions they favored? You can't have both at the same time.

One Day (An Icemav fic)

"Why do you hate me?" Maverick asks one day, quiet and tired, staring into the depths of his locker.

"I don't." Ice says the words matter-of-factly, not looking up from his watch as he fastens it to his wrist.

"Why are you so mean, then?" Maverick feels almost five years old as he asks the question, but the scared, abandoned child within him can't hold it in any longer, he needs to know.

Ice looks at him, and before Maverick's very eyes, he watches as the coldness in the other man melts away. Ice is looking at him too, only instead of a pinched and hardened expression, he looks morose, almost sad.

"Because I can't let anyone know," Ice sighs.

"Know what?" Maverick feels entiteled to know.

"That I've fallen for you."

Maverick doesn't know what to say, when he'd first asked he hadn't been expecting a confession. He'd expected Ice to repeat his earlier statements about him being dangerous, conceited, full of himself, and thoughtless. But this- this was something else.

Not knowing what else to do, Maverick stepped over the bench dividing them in the locker room, and took Ice's face into his hands reverently. Closing his eyes, Maverick leaned in and pressed his lips to Ice's. Short, quick, and chaste as the kiss is, it conveys everything Maverick wants Ice to know that he can't convey with his words.

Stepping back again, Maverick looks up at Ice and feels something wild and raging between them settle at the love-sick look in Ice's eyes.

"We can't," Ice breathes, tears gathering in his eyes.

Maverick knows this, nodding in silent and reluctant agreement. They'd never get away with it, and it'd only end in pain for both of them.

"If things were different," Maverick looks back up into Ice's eyes, lost in the multitude of colors and emotions he finds there.

"If things were different," Ice agrees.

"One day." Maverick brushes his hand over Ice's shoulder, brushing the wrinkles from his uniform.

Swallowing roughly and fighting back tears at the unfairness of it all, Maverick nods once again jerkily and retreats from the locker room, feeling as though his very soul has been flayed open for the world to see.

(25 Years Later, September 2011)

Maverick sinks back into his seat as he watched the events play out on the news in front of him. Repealed. They'd repealed Don't Ask, Don't Tell. Rubbing a hand over his jaw, Maverick waits for the wave of freedom the wash over him, unsure of what to do next. He gets the feeling that he should celebrate.

His phone buzzing with an incoming text message pulls him from his thoughts.

"Things are different." Maverick stares at Ice's message for a minute before replying.

"They are," he agrees. Times had certainly changed, and so had they. Maverick had remained the eternal bachelor thanks to his treacherous heart and the societal expectations the Navy had placed upon it. Yes. Hahahaha. YES. (Lengthy response below.)

So, for those who don't know, there is a scene in Doctor Faustus in which the Duchess of Vanholt expresses a craving for grapes in January. She requests that Faustus perform a miracle for her by summoning this out-of-season fruit, and Faustus sends Mephistopheles to collect grapes from the other side of the world. (The geography makes no sense here—more on that in a moment.)

Grapes in England are harvested in late September–October, but Henslowe's Diary shows performances of Doctor Faustus happening year-round. Because fresh produce could not yet be shipped long distances in Marlowe's time, this leaves us with a scene whose implications, and possibly text, change significantly depending on month of performance.

Let's start with performances during grape season. 9 of the 24 DF performances recorded in Henslowe's Diary happened from September to November, when grapes were presumably locally available. This number includes the first recorded performance of the play (Sept 30, 1594), though it's likely that there were previous, unrecorded performances. When played during these months, the audience may well have been eating grapes from the same harvest as the actor playing the Duchess—excavations of the Rose Playhouse have found grape seeds dating back to this period. There's a cool paper by Sally Templeman arguing that Shakespeare deliberately included food in his early plays to generate business for the inns in which they were being performed. I think that DF's inclusion of grapes may have similarly benefited Rose Playhouse fruit vendors. Witnessing the Duchess' grape craving may have manufactured a similar craving in the audience, and eating them alongside her may have allowed them to take part in Faustus' magic, transforming the ordinary experience of purchasing seasonal snacks at the theatre into something miraculous.

When grapes weren't in season, the Admiral's Men would have needed to either swap grapes for another seasonal fruit, use fake grapes onstage, or remove the scene altogether. I'm going to take each of these possibilities in turn, cause IMO they all have interesting implications.

Substituting grapes for other seasonal fruits at different times of the year would have retained most of the scene's resonances. It would also demonstrate a fluidity to the play text—perhaps the A-Text of DF reflects a fall performance. Eyewitness accounts and archaeological records alike tell us that Southwark playhouses offered seasonal snacks, meaning that varying the fruit used in this episode through the year would produce in the audience the same effect as the grapes: suspension of disbelief, participation in the play's magic, and possibly increased fruit sales.

However, different fruits would shift certain implications of the scene, as grapes have very specific associations. As the fruit behind wine, grapes were seen as an aphrodisiac, creating a potential sexual undercurrent to this scene (which many modern productions capitalize upon, including the Globe's magnificent 2011 version). We know that wine was sold at the Rose, and audience members who purchased it may too have felt a connection to the Duchess, drinking a beverage that came from grapes like hers. DF was also being performed during a period of declining grape production in England, as more and more wines were being imported from France. This trend was intensified further by a series of cold summers in the 1590s resulting in poor grape harvests (see Kelly and Ó Gráda page 307). The audience may have connected grapes to international trade for this reason, strengthening Faustus' speech about importing grapes from abroad. They may have also seen grapes as somewhat of a delicacy due to shortages, something which archaeological records seem to support: notably fewer grape seeds were found on the yard floor than in the gallery during this archaeological phase, suggesting that wealthier theatre patrons were more likely to purchase grapes during this period.

On the other hand, the Admiral's Men may have chosen to remove this scene or to fake grapes when they were out of season. While swapping the fruit used may have been a feasible solution for much of the year, there were certain performances where the Admiral's Men would have been hard pressed to find any fresh fruit, such as for the 5 recorded shows in January and February. (Yes, apples may have been available, but their long shelf life makes them ill suited for this plotline.) Omitting the scene altogether would have sidestepped certain technical issues. Using fake grapes, meanwhile, would bring new meaning to Faustus' grape conjuring: rather than suspending their disbelief, the audience would occupy the same winter as the characters onstage—they would experience Faustus' magic through shared awe with the Duke and Duchess.

All of these options, I think, show that the text of DF is built to be fluid, in a way that rings far more Medieval than Early Modern, or at least, than Early Modern as we like to understand it. The idea of a fixed text is a modern one, and DF would have needed to be mutable until relatively recently, since fresh produce available all year round is a recent development.

Speaking of! Faustus, when asked how he procured grapes in January, says that he summoned them from a region where it is still summertime: "in India, Saba, and farther countries in the east." Obviously this makes no scientific sense, but Jane Hwang Degenhardt has an excellent paper in which she points out that Faustus' eastward path reflects trade routes that are starting to be built in the 16th century. This situates the scene within Elizabethan England's growing naval and imperial power following its defeat of the Spanish Armada, and, when performed in England's grape season, exoticizes the land on which the audience stands. In the late 1500s, England didn't have trade roots as far east as Faustus describes, nor the ability to import perishable goods, but the audience may have seen Faustus' magic as the technology of the future within the framework of an emerging colonialist power.

Nowaways, we do have those trade roots, and we do have the technology to supply fresh produce year-round—though these things have come at a massive cost, to both the environment and to the many people who have suffered at the hands of colonialism. A deal with the devil indeed. As a result, we see seasonal food as atemporal for the most part, meaning that not only can this scene be reproduced with grapes all year round, but a lot of its implication have been reduced or shifted. Now, the scene creates in the audience a temporal distance from its characters—in England, seasonal availability is by and large a thing of the past. And as climate change moves wine production north into England, increasing the country's grape production, the scene's implications continue to change. Our destruction of the environment is literally making grapes easier to obtain in England.

Kaylor Swiftgron: Which Muse Inspired Which Songs on Red & 1989

On the precipice of 1989 TV's release and amidst the Kaylorification of 1989 TV's rollout, I thought it'd be a good time to figure out which muses aligned to which songs. I did my research, which includes: lyrical analysis & music video analysis, the timing of when songs were written, which producers and co-writers were credited to each song, social media posts, and where the girls were in real time. Shout out to @sophietv for her incredible work on the Kaylor timelines and evidence, and to @swiftgronmasterpost and @swiftgronmasterpost for their work to outline everything from Achele to Rivergron to Swiftgron. The Red Muses

2011

Red was written in two phases. First, she worked with her producer from Speak Now & Fearless, Nathan Chapman. They wrote 25 songs together between February and October 2011. She took these songs to Scott Borchetta and he congratulated her on a finished album, but she wanted to experiment with other producers and writers to play with new sounds. So, after October 2011 she started working with a handful of other producers to write more tracks for Red. Here's a breakdown of Red songs by producer.

The first time we know for sure Dianna and Taylor interacted was on September 4th, 2011 at the Fairfax Flea Market, which implied that the songs Taylor wrote with Chapman weren't about Dianna.

Karlie and Taylor dated (I think) starting in the summer or early fall of 2011. I think they weren't expecting anything super serious, but it was one of those flirtations that starts out strong and feels good with them and all of the sudden you're in love and you barely believe it and feel ridiculous for knowing but you have a feeling this person is for you, maybe forever... It sounds right for Taylor who has admitted how fast & hard she tends to fall for people when she's in love.

Taylor attended the Rodarte Spring/Summer 2012 fashion show during NYFW and sat front row next to Anna Wintour on Tuesday, September 13, 2011. Karlie walked in the show (slay). This was also the day that Taylor spent with a Vogue interviewer for her iconic January 2012 Vogue Cover and Article where she is quoted as saying "I love Karlie Kloss! I want to bake cookies with her!" She said this straight after leaving the Rodarte Fashion Show.

Interestingly, Karlie was quoted in a magazine as having been introduced to Taylor Swift at the Met Gala and they joked about baking cookies together! They both attended the Met Gala in May 2011, just four months before the Rodarte Fashion Show/Vogue Interview day! So it's pretty weird that Taylor would say the exact same thing, unprompted, when she saw a photo of Karlie Kloss at a fashion designer's studio on the exact same day she sat front row for a fashion show Karlie walked in!!

I imagine that Taylor and Karlie fell into something new and beautiful and sweet by accident. The Rodarte Show was on a Tuesday, maybe they met up for coffee the next day on Wednesday, September 14th in NYC? Who's to say!

All that said, I think Begin Again is about Karlie. It was written sometime between February and October 2011, which would've been a really, really fast turnaround for it to be about Dianna. Between the music video and the lyrical connections, it's very Kaylor coded. Starlight also could plausibly be about Karlie because they attended the Met together in 2010 and 2011, and their 2011 dresses were sparkly and tbh Karlie looked hot AF.

But, let's also remember that Taylor is on tour and just got herself out of two on-again-off-again, fairly toxic relationships, and as she said herself in Begin Again that the last 8 months she's been heartbroken and scared to get hurt from love (earliest would've been June 2010-February 2011 and latest would've been February-October 2011). Plus she's not even 22 years old, so she's not necessarily good at being in relationships yet. She's in a messy place, and she falls in love like a ton of bricks.

I think that this delicate, precious new thing with Karlie didn't work out (not for malice or hurting each other, just life) and over the winter they were distant but were still in contact.

2012

On January 17, 2012 we get tweets from BOTH Karlie and Dianna about the *iconic* Vogue article. This makes me think:

1. Karlie is still interested in exploring this new relationship with Taylor

2. Dianna and Taylor have kept in touch and have a lil something something going on, a little curiosity they might want to explore

3. Taylor likes public attention, and she likes feeling wanted, and she's got two hot ass women who want her. Do you blame the girl for being messy!?!

Dianna and Taylor attend the same pre-Oscars party on February 24th, 2012, and this is where I think Swiftgron starts to take off. Dianna is all happy and heart eyes online for the next three weeks until the Speak Now Tour ends. They're spotted together frequently in March and April. The Shirley MacLaine birthday party thing happens April 25th, Dianna's circus birthday party is April 28th, and I would bet anything they started hooking up sometime these first two months. I think Holy Ground was written about Dianna's birthday party, with the note on the door with the joke we made, and that was the first day.

Taylor writes Everything Has Changed and Run on May 15th, 2012, with Ed Sheeran, and records both EHC and The Last Time on May 28th, 2012. Everything Has Changed seems Swiftgron (thanks Gaylor twt for helping me figure out that the freckles are IN Dianna's green eyes bc girl bye I was full of questions). The Last Time is almost certainly about Liz.

But Run is very Kaylor coded! The pale blue eyes, use of darling, the laugh like a child (Begin Again), locket, picture frame...

On May 31st, 2012, Dianna is bearding hard with Henry Joost to distract from her appearance with GLAAD. I have a working hypothesis that Taylor Swift hates beards and is not a fan of having to use them or be with people who have them. I just don't think it works for her with how insanely famous she is, the guys are hyperscrutinized and she's honestly not very good at being a convincing heterosexual woman. I think there's some conflict between Taylor and Dianna because of the beard.

By June 10th, 2012, Taylor has written 22, WANEGBT, and IKYWT. I am inclined to believe that WANEGBT is about Emily or Liz. Same thing with IKYWT. 22 is about her besties and living life and being carefree and embracing all of the beauty and pain of falling in and out of love and everything that is your early 20s.

We get the whole Hyannis Port x Kennedys summer week of pap walks featuring Swiftgron all over the place! But it seems like they probably break up later in July. This was a hot and cold relationship for real.

WANEGBT is released on 8/13 and Dianna tweets at Taylor (like never ever?). On September 29, 2012 Dianna and Naya Rivera are on a cheeky, lil sexy vacation in Paris. Taylor goes to Paris that same weekend to film Begin Again at the Love Lock bridge (Karlie is also in Paris but there's no evidence to show that they saw each other at all).

However, I wouldn't put it past Taylor and Karlie to have seen each other while Swiftgron was cold. Perhaps in September 2012 right around when she filmed Begin Again?

October 17, 2012 Taylor writes This Love in LA according to her diary entries. So I think This Love is about the Swiftgron reconciliation for whatever happened this summer. Things are good for a bit, they go to the Ripple of Hope gala together on December 3rd, 2012. They're pictured together on December 6th, 2012 and Dianna's all cryptic online about her secret love.

Quick Aside: Karlie and Josh have been "officially together" ever since June 2012, but they were first seen together in November 2012 when they both attended the VS Fashion Show. I'm under the impression that these gay celebrities in their early twenties only needed a beard when they were in another relationship they were distracting away from. They didn't need a beard, they could just say they were focused on friends and their career (aka 1989 era). So who was Karlie dating in mid 2012 that needed to be covered up with plausible deniability? This would've been in the works for a bit before they launched it in November 2012.

Also, super interesting that Karlie also met Taylor for the "first time" at the 2013 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, hmm? Anywayssss.

2013

I think everything Swiftgron blew up on February 14th, 2013 with the 'I Do' episode of Glee where Dianna Agron and Naya Rivera hook up on screen. Taylor made a whole big deal about this episode containing one of her songs and encouraged her fans to watch, but her song wasn't in the show (tweet was later deleted). But picture this: Happy Valentine's Day, watch your girlfriend hook up with the girl she told you not to worry about!! And then learn that they actually did hookup when y'all were on a break, like two weeks before y'all got back together!! Oooh boy!! I'm pretty sure this was what inspired Babe (in the music video Taylor was the mistress, but IRL Taylor was the main character who got cheated on instead of the mistress!!).

Dianna is a mess on Twitter after that and there might have been about two months of back & forth, maybe some breakup sex, but I think Swiftgron died dead by the time the article about them secretly dating dropped on April 16th, 2013.

The Red tour started on March 18th, 2013 and I can't imagine that made things any easier for Swiftgron. Meanwhile... I think Karlie and Taylor re-reconnected in this time period.

The 1989 Muses

2013

Taylor wrote 1989 while on tour for Red (except for This Love, according to the diary entry it was written on 10/17/2012). I think the breakup songs are about Dianna and the love songs (excluding This Love) are allllll Karlie.

If Taylor and Karlie did reconnect in Fall 2012, then Spring 2013 would be a long six months later...

Taylor and Karlie "meet for the first time" (which we have so much proof that it's not but like, okay, fine) on November 13, 2013 at the Victoria's Secret Fashion show. We know this isn't their first meeting or flirtationship, but it certainly is their first public outing to test what people say about their friendship.

Then, I'd wager Taylor plays "cat & mouse for a month or two or three" until they officially are girlfriends on March 6, 2014. Yay!!!

I'm aware I'm not the only person to do this but here's a post that was just meant to be me tracking up the description of Gerry's hair to see what is actually going on on that front but this also turned into a few other things that are quite interesting to think about. And I started

I will put this under a cut as it's long, also spoilers

So we first meet Gerry in 004

And he's described as having 'artificially black' hair and he's unshaven, this statement is set in Winter 2012 and is from the period where Mary is haunting Gerry post her death, this also occurs after the events of 012 as the incident in 012 is dated as happening on December 23rd 2011

Then in 012

Yet again, dyed hair, this time he's clean shaven which implies either Gerry tends to shave or he probably at least shaved for the sake of blending in for this incident

(This is also when Gerry had all his tattoos)

, this is also in 2011 and it's when Mary is still around but I'm not sure if she like actually somehow appeared at the hospital since it's never really said like how far Mary could like project herself as a ghost but either way somehow they signed him off to her.

Also to note from 012

Gerry has an expired passport with him, he's traveled a lot this lines up with what Gerry himself says in 111 that he and Mary traveled a lot (Also I personally feel he likely had a feeling he wasn't coming back from this and had that on him for... reasons)

Then in 035 we encounter teenage Gerry in 2002

He's described as thin, his hair is apparently obviously dyed, it's also described as 'greasy'

Also to note, this is where the statement giver implies Gerry is somehow stronger than he looks

Gerry then shows up in 048

He's described as scrawny here, and also described as having 'long black hair' this episode is set in September 2009 which would likely be about a year after Mary's death which is said to have happened in 2008 and in 111 Gerry does say the following

Also in 004 it's stated that Gerry seemingly disappeared after being acquitted

Also apparently someone moved into Pinhole Books in 2014

Also to note 062 where Mary talks to Gertrude and gives her Eric's page is set on the 3rd July 2008 meaning that Mary's death was somewhere after this point (I am going to assume likely not that long after this)

Mary speaks to Eric in 154 which is dated to the 21st July 2008 and also this is where Eric does ask her to track down Gerry and Gertrude has been aware of Gerry's existence for a good while by this point.

Also it's implied that Eric and Gertrude know what Mary was going to do

Another side note 080 is where we have Jurgen's encounter with Gerry which probably would've happened in 2014

And Gerry thinks this was in fact not Leitner

So now we come to 102

This statement was taken in June 2014 and is the source of the 'poorly dyed' description of Gerry's hair, this is the only time where the condition of his hair is really remarked upon other than in 035 where it's described as greasy (Which I personally feel was just as a result of Gerry being a teenager at a time as having greasy hair as a teenager happens to most people) so that was likely a one off moment.

Other references to Gerry's hair being dyed imply it's obviously dyed and an artificial looking black so I have another feeling that his hair looking the way it apparently does here is probably a one off since Gerry has been.... going through it to put it mildly.

And its stated that Gerry passes away a few months after this and in 111 Gerry states and since he says Mary haunted him for five years Gertrude seemingly was the one to seek Gerry out This was likely some point in 2013 (Going off what was calculated by people writing the tma wiki)

Allegedly The Catalogue was burned, or at least Mary's pages were Gertrude however seems to have The Catalogue in 2015 when she is arrested for tresspassing

Gerry was also unaware he was ill until it was too late

In 012 we find out Gerry's death was sometime in late 2015

And Jon finds the following out in 107

From what we have in 107 it's likely Gerry and Gertrude were heading to The Usher Foundation from Chicago but only got as far as Pittsburgh, this is where Gerry passes, Gertrude narrowly avoids arrest for being caught when binding Gerry to the Catalogue of the Trapped Dead and Gertrude travels back to England.

And then The Catalogue falls into Julia and Trevor's hands about a year late 109

(And yes can confirm the Greyhound route referenced by Jon does exist)

Things to Summarise

Gerry is apparently stronger than he looks, he is also canonically pale and thin/scrawny

He's described as having stubble in 004 but not 012 I have a feeling he tends to stay clean shaven but in 004 it's implied he looks like hes not slept for a few days (Likely due to Mary) 004 happened post 012

Gerry has an expired passport with him in 012 likely for identification reasons (I personally feel he had a feeling he might not be coming back)

Gerry was released into Mary's care after the events of 012 but it's not clear if Mary was physically there or not

His hair is obviously dyed, and always described as long. His hair is described as Greasy in 035 when he's a teenager, and Poorly Dyed in 102, 102 is set not long before Gerry died so I have a feeling that's probably part of the reason his hair is like that he's been going through it (tm)

Gertrude very likely knew about Gerry's existence pre 2008, she was asked to find him in July 2008 by Eric, She also spoke to Eric a few weeks after Mary approached her in July 2008 but didn't intervene until 2013

Mary's death was likely some point in Summer 2008, probably in July

Someone moved into Pinhole Books in 2014

Gerry also beat up Jurgen Leitner in 2014

Mary's pages were burned in 2013 but it seems The Catalogue was still usable since Gerry was put into it

Gertrude and Gerry most likely heading to The Usher Foundation before his death They'd been in Chicago and were traveling via Pittsburgh, which is as far as they got before Gerry died, Gertrude never did show up at The Usher Foundation.

Gerry died some point in late 2015, the Catalogue of the Trapped Dead was left behind and eventually vanished from the evidence locker and somehow ended up with Julia and Trevor just under a year later
