With her short cropped hair, dark green dress and rebellious energy, the girl in Untitled (2007) emits the youthful defiance that has come to typify works by Yoshitomo Nara. [...]

"He is widely celebrated for his paintings and coloured pencil drawings of juvenile, cartoonish characters with large gazing eyes and endearing personalities. They inhabit imagined and insouciant paper worlds, brandish absurd objects and props—knives, sprouts, cigarettes, and electric guitars—and express a wide range of capricious, childlike emotion. Stern and somewhat sulky, our subject hovers in indeterminate space. She stands upon a Japanese flag with her small feet positioned perfectly over its crimson sun. Emblazoned around her miniature figure are the words ‘Up Yours!’, and, ‘All the Nations!’. As an advocate of peace, questions of nationhood, conflict and world politics weave through Nara’s art in such pithy phrases and symbols. Exhibited at the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga—the first show of the artist’s work in Spain in 2007-2008—the present work was one of twenty coloured pencil drawings hung along the final wall of the gallery.

Born in 1959 in Japan’s rural Aomori Prefecture, Nara’s youth was marked by his country’s rapid post-war economic development and an influx of Western pop-culture, from Disney animation to punk and rock and roll. The artist expresses heartfelt nostalgia for the retro media—record-sleeves and comic books—that offered escapism from an otherwise solitary childhood. ‘Of course if you think back to the ’70s,’ he says, ‘information moved very differently. There was no Internet obviously and even the release date of albums in Japan could be delayed as much as six months … I would just sit there, listen to the music, look at the art on the cover and I think I really developed my imagination through that’ (N. Hegert, ‘Interview with Yoshitomo Nara,’ Artslant, 18 September 2010). This sensitivity to the worn, tactile quality of objects is triumphant in his art today and distinguishes him from the likes of Takashi Murakami and his Superflat movement. Untitled bears the enlivening traces of artist’s hand, present in the rough ‘outside-the-line’ scribbles that imply the girl’s messy hair. Bracketed with Nara’s unfiltered, handwritten text, the image feels distinctly personal, like a secret note exchanged between friends.

As early as his time at Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts in the 1980s, Nara began to draw onto envelopes, cardboard, and scraps of found paper. He continued these explorations at the prestigious Kunstakademie Düsseldorf where, under the tutorship of German Neo-Expressionist painter A. R. Penck, he was encouraged to work fluidly between painting and drawing. ‘I [loved] to draw every day and the scrawled sketches, never shown to anybody, started piling up’, Nara has said. ‘Like journal entries reflecting the events of each day, they sometimes intersected [with] memories from the past. My little everyday world became a trigger for the imagination, and I learned to develop and capture the imagery that arose’ (Y. Nara, ‘Nobody’s Fool’, in N. Miyamura and S. EVANESCENCE To Enter Studio In November

During an interview with 89 FM A Rádio Rock at the Rock In Rio festival in Brazil on September 15, EVANESCENCE's Amy Lee was asked about the band's plans for the coming months. She responded (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): "We're in the creative process right now, but we're not deep in the throes of it yet. We've been doing a lot of creating, and we just have, like, tons of ideas. So we're gonna get serious and get in the studio in November for the first round. Round one."

EVANESCENCE will embark on its first headline tour across Canada in 15 years this fall. Produced by Live Nation Canada, the trek kicks off on October 15 in Vancouver, British Columbia, hitting cities nationwide before wrapping on October 29 in London, Ontario. EVANESCENCE will be joined by special guests, post-grunge/metal rockers HALESTORM across all stops. Alternative sister trio THE WARNING will open all shows.

Delivering a number of dynamic rock hits over the last two decades, EVANESCENCE recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of its landmark debut album, "Fallen", originally released in 2003. They recognized the milestone with a special anniversary edition of the smash album, which spawned gigantic rock hits like "Bring Me To Life", "Going Under" and "My Immortal", kickstarting a thriving career they're still carrying out today.

To date, EVANESCENCE has released a total of five studio albums, including the multi-platinum "The Open Door" (2004) and "Evanescence" (2011),both of which topped the Billboard 200. In 2021, the band thrilled fans with their first album of new material in a decade, "The Bitter Truth". Now 20 years on, EVANESCENCE continues to scale new heights. Featuring a lineup of Amy Lee (vocals, keyboards),Tim McCord (guitar/bass),Will Hunt (drums),Troy McLawhorn (guitars) and Emma Anzai (bass, backing vocals),the band continues to travel the globe, staging some of the most successful shows of their career, having wrapped a run of sold-out shows in Latin America, including Allianz Parque, a soccer stadium in Sāo Paulo, Brazil, which was the biggest headline show of EVANESCENCE's career to date, drawing 40,000 fans.

Shortly following its release in March 2021, "The Bitter Truth" rose to the top of the iTunes Album charts in 22 countries and also landed the top spot on Billboard's Top Hard Rock Albums chart.

EVANESCENCE first topped the Hard Rock Albums chart in October 2011 with its self-titled effort. The album stayed atop the list for three weeks.

"The Bitter Truth" was recorded during the pandemic and confronted the dark realities of the world head-on. Yet its resounding message was one of light: pushing through is better than giving up.

What do you make of the moment when Kate shrugged William's hand on a Christmas show in 2019? The sugars use this to show how they actually hate each other, but I've always thought Kate just reacted immediately because they never did PDA and she was caught by surprise, as in to say "what are you doing? we're working"

I've been following the BRF since the Sussex drama, so I don't have decades the reflect on, but from what I've seen, it really seemed there was a no PDA rule. They also appeared much stuffy, even towards each other, with Kate standing straighter, making sure she was walking behind William, often keeping her hands in front of her as if to protect herself. But the last years, the seem more at ease in public, allowing some hands on the back here and there. And I've actually been wondering if H&M overdoing it with the PDA meant the BRF could actually relax a bit and allow some touching without looking unprofessional.

There isn’t a “no PDA” rule. The rule is that everyone is expected to be professional at work. And PDA - over the top PDA like the Sussexes - is not professional behavior in any industry, in any profession, in any country in the world.

William and Kate are affectionate and playful with each other. They always have been, long before Meghan had Harry in her claws:

And no, I didn't see "the incident" as Kate shrugging off William's hand because it was PDA. I see that moment as Kate adjusting her position in her seat and William briefly touching her. If you watch the clip, you'll notice that Kate's whole body wiggles; her shoulders, her trunk, and her legs. William just happened to touch her in that same moment. If she was shrugging him off, if she was recoiling from his touch, only her shoulder would have moved. It was a harmless, normal moment that happens to everyone.

Others may see it differently, and that's fine.

Harry and Meghan overdoing it with the PDA didn't open any doors for anyone to be more affectionate or show more affection. All they did was highlight the difference between working professionals who a) know they're on the job, b) know their roles for the job, and c) know that their job is bigger than their individual needs and people who think their love and togetherness is more important than the job.

One Day (An Icemav fic)

"Why do you hate me?" Maverick asks one day, quiet and tired, staring into the depths of his locker.

"I don't." Ice says the words matter-of-factly, not looking up from his watch as he fastens it to his wrist.

"Why are you so mean, then?" Maverick feels almost five years old as he asks the question, but the scared, abandoned child within him can't hold it in any longer, he needs to know.

Ice looks at him, and before Maverick's very eyes, he watches as the coldness in the other man melts away. Ice is looking at him too, only instead of a pinched and hardened expression, he looks morose, almost sad.

"Because I can't let anyone know," Ice sighs.

"Know what?" Maverick feels entiteled to know.

"That I've fallen for you."

Maverick doesn't know what to say, when he'd first asked he hadn't been expecting a confession. He'd expected Ice to repeat his earlier statements about him being dangerous, conceited, full of himself, and thoughtless. But this- this was something else.

Not knowing what else to do, Maverick stepped over the bench dividing them in the locker room, and took Ice's face into his hands reverently. Closing his eyes, Maverick leaned in and pressed his lips to Ice's. Short, quick, and chaste as the kiss is, it conveys everything Maverick wants Ice to know that he can't convey with his words.

Stepping back again, Maverick looks up at Ice and feels something wild and raging between them settle at the love-sick look in Ice's eyes.

"We can't," Ice breathes, tears gathering in his eyes.

Maverick knows this, nodding in silent and reluctant agreement. They'd never get away with it, and it'd only end in pain for both of them.

"If things were different," Maverick looks back up into Ice's eyes, lost in the multitude of colors and emotions he finds there.

"If things were different," Ice agrees.

"One day." Maverick brushes his hand over Ice's shoulder, brushing the wrinkles from his uniform.

Swallowing roughly and fighting back tears at the unfairness of it all, Maverick nods once again jerkily and retreats from the locker room, feeling as though his very soul has been flayed open for the world to see.

(25 Years Later, September 2011)

Maverick sinks back into his seat as he watched the events play out on the news in front of him. Repealed. They'd repealed Don't Ask, Don't Tell. Rubbing a hand over his jaw, Maverick waits for the wave of freedom the wash over him, unsure of what to do next. He gets the feeling that he should celebrate.

His phone buzzing with an incoming text message pulls him from his thoughts.

"Things are different." Maverick stares at Ice's message for a minute before replying.

"They are," he agrees. Times had certainly changed, and so had they. Maverick had remained the eternal bachelor thanks to his treacherous heart and the societal expectations the Navy had placed upon it. Ice himself had attempted to play as normal, but it had ultimately ended in the most gentle divorce Maverick had seen, and he'd seen his fair share of divorces being in the military. Maybe their stars had finally aligned, Maverick wondered.

The rolling series of dots appeared under his reply as Ice typed again.

"One day?" Ice's text pops up, followed closely by another. "If I'm not too late?"

Maverick scratches his ear and smiles before formulating a reply. "Friday, 1830."

"It's a date."

Maverick smiles down at his phone screen, unable to stop smiling, recalling the moment they'd shared in the locker room all those years ago.

I'm aware I'm not the only person to do this but here's a post that was just meant to be me tracking up the description of Gerry's hair to see what is actually going on on that front but this also turned into a few other things that are quite interesting to think about. And I started

I will put this under a cut as it's long, also spoilers

So we first meet Gerry in 004

And he's described as having 'artificially black' hair and he's unshaven, this statement is set in Winter 2012 and is from the period where Mary is haunting Gerry post her death, this also occurs after the events of 012 as the incident in 012 is dated as happening on December 23rd 2011

Then in 012

Yet again, dyed hair, this time he's clean shaven which implies either Gerry tends to shave or he probably at least shaved for the sake of blending in for this incident

(This is also when Gerry had all his tattoos)

, this is also in 2011 and it's when Mary is still around but I'm not sure if she like actually somehow appeared at the hospital since it's never really said like how far Mary could like project herself as a ghost but either way somehow they signed him off to her.

Also to note from 012

Gerry has an expired passport with him, he's traveled a lot this lines up with what Gerry himself says in 111 that he and Mary traveled a lot (Also I personally feel he likely had a feeling he wasn't coming back from this and had that on him for... reasons)

Then in 035 we encounter teenage Gerry in 2002

He's described as thin, his hair is apparently obviously dyed, it's also described as 'greasy'

Also to note, this is where the statement giver implies Gerry is somehow stronger than he looks

Gerry then shows up in 048

He's described as scrawny here, and also described as having 'long black hair' this episode is set in September 2009 which would likely be about a year after Mary's death which is said to have happened in 2008 and in 111 Gerry does say the following

Also in 004 it's stated that Gerry seemingly disappeared after being acquitted

Also apparently someone moved into Pinhole Books in 2014

Also to note 062 where Mary talks to Gertrude and gives her Eric's page is set on the 3rd July 2008 meaning that Mary's death was somewhere after this point (I am going to assume likely not that long after this)

Mary speaks to Eric in 154 which is dated to the 21st July 2008 and also this is where Eric does ask her to track down Gerry and Gertrude has been aware of Gerry's existence for a good while by this point.

Also it's implied that Eric and Gertrude know what Mary was going to do

Another side note 080 is where we have Jurgen's encounter with Gerry which probably would've happened in 2014

And Gerry thinks this was in fact not Leitner

So now we come to 102

This statement was taken in June 2014 and is the source of the 'poorly dyed' description of Gerry's hair, this is the only time where the condition of his hair is really remarked upon other than in 035 where it's described as greasy (Which I personally feel was just as a result of Gerry being a teenager at a time as having greasy hair as a teenager happens to most people) so that was likely a one off moment.

Other references to Gerry's hair being dyed imply it's obviously dyed and an artificial looking black so I have another feeling that his hair looking the way it apparently does here is probably a one off since Gerry has been.... going through it to put it mildly.

And its stated that Gerry passes away a few months after this and in 111 Gerry states and since he says Mary haunted him for five years Gertrude seemingly was the one to seek Gerry out This was likely some point in 2013 (Going off what was calculated by people writing the tma wiki)

Allegedly The Catalogue was burned, or at least Mary's pages were Gertrude however seems to have The Catalogue in 2015 when she is arrested for tresspassing

Gerry was also unaware he was ill until it was too late

In 012 we find out Gerry's death was sometime in late 2015

And Jon finds the following out in 107

From what we have in 107 it's likely Gerry and Gertrude were heading to The Usher Foundation from Chicago but only got as far as Pittsburgh, this is where Gerry passes, Gertrude narrowly avoids arrest for being caught when binding Gerry to the Catalogue of the Trapped Dead and Gertrude travels back to England.

And then The Catalogue falls into Julia and Trevor's hands about a year late 109

(And yes can confirm the Greyhound route referenced by Jon does exist)

So that's the post

Things to Summarise

Gerry is apparently stronger than he looks, he is also canonically pale and thin/scrawny

He's described as having stubble in 004 but not 012 I have a feeling he tends to stay clean shaven but in 004 it's implied he looks like hes not slept for a few days (Likely due to Mary) 004 happened post 012

Gerry has an expired passport with him in 012 likely for identification reasons (I personally feel he had a feeling he might not be coming back)

Gerry was released into Mary's care after the events of 012 but it's not clear if Mary was physically there or not

His hair is obviously dyed, and always described as long. His hair is described as Greasy in 035 when he's a teenager, and Poorly Dyed in 102, 102 is set not long before Gerry died so I have a feeling that's probably part of the reason his hair is like that he's been going through it (tm)

Gertrude very likely knew about Gerry's existence pre 2008, she was asked to find him in July 2008 by Eric, She also spoke to Eric a few weeks after Mary approached her in July 2008 but didn't intervene until 2013

Mary's death was likely some point in Summer 2008, probably in July

Someone moved into Pinhole Books in 2014

Gerry also beat up Jurgen Leitner in 2014

Mary's pages were burned in 2013 but it seems The Catalogue was still usable since Gerry was put into it

Gertrude and Gerry most likely heading to The Usher Foundation before his death They'd been in Chicago and were traveling via Pittsburgh, which is as far as they got before Gerry died, Gertrude never did show up at The Usher Foundation.

Gerry died some point in late 2015, the Catalogue of the Trapped Dead was left behind and eventually vanished from the evidence locker and somehow ended up with Julia and Trevor just under a year later

Kaylor Swiftgron: Which Muse Inspired Which Songs on Red & 1989

On the precipice of 1989 TV's release and amidst the Kaylorification of 1989 TV's rollout, I thought it'd be a good time to figure out which muses aligned to which songs. I did my research, which includes: lyrical analysis & music video analysis, the timing of when songs were written, which producers and co-writers were credited to each song, social media posts, and where the girls were in real time. Shout out to @sophietv for her incredible work on the Kaylor timelines and evidence, and to @swiftgronmasterpost and @swiftgronmasterpost for their work to outline everything from Achele to Rivergron to Swiftgron. Round of applause to you both!!

Let's get into it!! (and if you want to just see my conclusions for which songs are about which muse, scroooolllll to the bottom)

The Red Muses

2011

Red was written in two phases. First, she worked with her producer from Speak Now & Fearless, Nathan Chapman. They wrote 25 songs together between February and October 2011. She took these songs to Scott Borchetta and he congratulated her on a finished album, but she wanted to experiment with other producers and writers to play with new sounds. So, after October 2011 she started working with a handful of other producers to write more tracks for Red. Here's a breakdown of Red songs by producer.

The first time we know for sure Dianna and Taylor interacted was on September 4th, 2011 at the Fairfax Flea Market, which implied that the songs Taylor wrote with Chapman weren't about Dianna.

Karlie and Taylor dated (I think) starting in the summer or early fall of 2011. I think they weren't expecting anything super serious, but it was one of those flirtations that starts out strong and feels good with them and all of the sudden you're in love and you barely believe it and feel ridiculous for knowing but you have a feeling this person is for you, maybe forever... It sounds right for Taylor who has admitted how fast & hard she tends to fall for people when she's in love.

Taylor attended the Rodarte Spring/Summer 2012 fashion show during NYFW and sat front row next to Anna Wintour on Tuesday, September 13, 2011. Karlie walked in the show (slay). This was also the day that Taylor spent with a Vogue interviewer for her iconic January 2012 Vogue Cover and Article where she is quoted as saying "I love Karlie Kloss! I want to bake cookies with her!" She said this straight after leaving the Rodarte Fashion Show.

Interestingly, Karlie was quoted in a magazine as having been introduced to Taylor Swift at the Met Gala and they joked about baking cookies together! They both attended the Met Gala in May 2011, just four months before the Rodarte Fashion Show/Vogue Interview day! So it's pretty weird that Taylor would say the exact same thing, unprompted, when she saw a photo of Karlie Kloss at a fashion designer's studio on the exact same day she sat front row for a fashion show Karlie walked in!!

I imagine that Taylor and Karlie fell into something new and beautiful and sweet by accident. The Rodarte Show was on a Tuesday, maybe they met up for coffee the next day on Wednesday, September 14th in NYC? Who's to say!

All that said, I think Begin Again is about Karlie. It was written sometime between February and October 2011, which would've been a really, really fast turnaround for it to be about Dianna. Between the music video and the lyrical connections, it's very Kaylor coded. Starlight also could plausibly be about Karlie because they attended the Met together in 2010 and 2011, and their 2011 dresses were sparkly and tbh Karlie looked hot AF.

But, let's also remember that Taylor is on tour and just got herself out of two on-again-off-again, fairly toxic relationships, and as she said herself in Begin Again that the last 8 months she's been heartbroken and scared to get hurt from love (earliest would've been June 2010-February 2011 and latest would've been February-October 2011). Plus she's not even 22 years old, so she's not necessarily good at being in relationships yet. She's in a messy place, and she falls in love like a ton of bricks.

I think that this delicate, precious new thing with Karlie didn't work out (not for malice or hurting each other, just life) and over the winter they were distant but were still in contact.

2012

On January 17, 2012 we get tweets from BOTH Karlie and Dianna about the *iconic* Vogue article. This makes me think:

1. Karlie is still interested in exploring this new relationship with Taylor

2. Dianna and Taylor have kept in touch and have a lil something something going on, a little curiosity they might want to explore

3. Taylor likes public attention, and she likes feeling wanted, and she's got two hot ass women who want her. Do you blame the girl for being messy!?!

Dianna and Taylor attend the same pre-Oscars party on February 24th, 2012, and this is where I think Swiftgron starts to take off. Dianna is all happy and heart eyes online for the next three weeks until the Speak Now Tour ends. They're spotted together frequently in March and April. The Shirley MacLaine birthday party thing happens April 25th, Dianna's circus birthday party is April 28th, and I would bet anything they started hooking up sometime these first two months. I think Holy Ground was written about Dianna's birthday party, with the note on the door with the joke we made, and that was the first day.

Taylor writes Everything Has Changed and Run on May 15th, 2012, with Ed Sheeran, and records both EHC and The Last Time on May 28th, 2012. Everything Has Changed seems Swiftgron (thanks Gaylor twt for helping me figure out that the freckles are IN Dianna's green eyes bc girl bye I was full of questions). The Last Time is almost certainly about Liz.

But Run is very Kaylor coded! The pale blue eyes, use of darling, the laugh like a child (Begin Again), locket, picture frame...

On May 31st, 2012, Dianna is bearding hard with Henry Joost to distract from her appearance with GLAAD. I have a working hypothesis that Taylor Swift hates beards and is not a fan of having to use them or be with people who have them. I just don't think it works for her with how insanely famous she is, the guys are hyperscrutinized and she's honestly not very good at being a convincing heterosexual woman. I think there's some conflict between Taylor and Dianna because of the beard.

By June 10th, 2012, Taylor has written 22, WANEGBT, and IKYWT. I am inclined to believe that WANEGBT is about Emily or Liz. Same thing with IKYWT. 22 is about her besties and living life and being carefree and embracing all of the beauty and pain of falling in and out of love and everything that is your early 20s.

We get the whole Hyannis Port x Kennedys summer week of pap walks featuring Swiftgron all over the place! But it seems like they probably break up later in July. This was a hot and cold relationship for real.

WANEGBT is released on 8/13 and Dianna tweets at Taylor (like never ever?). On September 29, 2012 Dianna and Naya Rivera are on a cheeky, lil sexy vacation in Paris. Taylor goes to Paris that same weekend to film Begin Again at the Love Lock bridge (Karlie is also in Paris but there's no evidence to show that they saw each other at all).

However, I wouldn't put it past Taylor and Karlie to have seen each other while Swiftgron was cold. Perhaps in September 2012 right around when she filmed Begin Again?

October 17, 2012 Taylor writes This Love in LA according to her diary entries. So I think This Love is about the Swiftgron reconciliation for whatever happened this summer. Things are good for a bit, they go to the Ripple of Hope gala together on December 3rd, 2012. They're pictured together on December 6th, 2012 and Dianna's all cryptic online about her secret love.

Quick Aside: Karlie and Josh have been "officially together" ever since June 2012, but they were first seen together in November 2012 when they both attended the VS Fashion Show. I'm under the impression that these gay celebrities in their early twenties only needed a beard when they were in another relationship they were distracting away from. They didn't need a beard, they could just say they were focused on friends and their career (aka 1989 era). So who was Karlie dating in mid 2012 that needed to be covered up with plausible deniability? This would've been in the works for a bit before they launched it in November 2012.

Also, super interesting that Karlie also met Taylor for the "first time" at the 2013 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, hmm? Anywayssss.

2013

I think everything Swiftgron blew up on February 14th, 2013 with the 'I Do' episode of Glee where Dianna Agron and Naya Rivera hook up on screen. Taylor made a whole big deal about this episode containing one of her songs and encouraged her fans to watch, but her song wasn't in the show (tweet was later deleted). But picture this: Happy Valentine's Day, watch your girlfriend hook up with the girl she told you not to worry about!! And then learn that they actually did hookup when y'all were on a break, like two weeks before y'all got back together!! Oooh boy!! I'm pretty sure this was what inspired Babe (in the music video Taylor was the mistress, but IRL Taylor was the main character who got cheated on instead of the mistress!!).

Dianna is a mess on Twitter after that and there might have been about two months of back & forth, maybe some breakup sex, but I think Swiftgron died dead by the time the article about them secretly dating dropped on April 16th, 2013.

The Red tour started on March 18th, 2013 and I can't imagine that made things any easier for Swiftgron. Meanwhile... I think Karlie and Taylor re-reconnected in this time period.

The 1989 Muses

2013

Taylor wrote 1989 while on tour for Red (except for This Love, according to the diary entry it was written on 10/17/2012). I think the breakup songs are about Dianna and the love songs (excluding This Love) are allllll Karlie.

If Taylor and Karlie did reconnect in Fall 2012, then Spring 2013 would be a long six months later...

Taylor and Karlie "meet for the first time" (which we have so much proof that it's not but like, okay, fine) on November 13, 2013 at the Victoria's Secret Fashion show. We know this isn't their first meeting or flirtationship, but it certainly is their first public outing to test what people say about their friendship.

Then, I'd wager Taylor plays "cat & mouse for a month or two or three" until they officially are girlfriends on March 6, 2014. Yay!!!

WOTFI 2024 PREDICTIONS

Another year, another war.

WOTFI is just around the corner and this means a new arc!

Who will be our opponent this year?

Well, the most likely answer would be Marty, returning from WOTFI 2023. I mean, it was pretty obvious that would be him from the get-go in the episode 'We Must Kill Mario'.

This, personally, was a great episode that had some good foreshadowing and I love the dynamic between Four and Karen — I thought of it as 'SMG4 🤝 Karen ➡️ single parents who are just born to be parents'

...which made me want a dynamic between Three and Karen, single moms who would kill for their kids.

Anyway, back to WOTFI, it makes sense for Marty to be the crew’s opponent timeline-wise. Looking at the calendar, we are expecting a WOTFI roughly sometime in October, based on the dates of previous WOTFI’s:

2011 - October 29

2012 - October 21

2013 - October 13

2014 - October 24

2015 - September 27

2016 - August 15

2017 - October 7

2018 - October 6

2019 - November 2

2020 - August 22

2021 - September 18

2022 - October 15

2023 - October 28

Assuming this arc would be 7 episodes and this being the first one, it lines up with our prediction. (Though, it may be subject to change depending on how many episodes it would actually have.)

What you may not know is this episode not only foreshadowed Marty’s return but the plot for WOTFI as well.

Now with that out of the way, Let’s-a Go!

CHANGE THE CHANNEL

The episode starts off in Karen’s house with her kids flipping through the SMG4 channel while she makes them dinner. In the scene where Zack, Cory, and Katie are fighting over the remote, we get a clip from the episode 'SMG4: You Made Mario Do This' when Marty was preventing the construction of the castle because he felt underappreciated for his hard work.

IT’S TO DIE FOR

In the next scene, Karen poured “Smarty’s Spaghetti Sauce” on the pasta.

…I mean, do I really have to spell it out here? If this cardboard cutout was able to run Casino Paisano before he and Mario went to jail, then it shouldn’t be a surprise. What is curious though is that somehow Marty, while on the run, has his face plastered on a Goober Eats bag in 'SMG4: Super SMG4 Wonder', owns a whole airline named “Marty Airlines” in 'Mario’s Plane Trip', and now has a pasta sauce brand in here. All with no one noticing anything.

There is an ‘S’ put in front of his name, but the point still stands. Now, I wouldn’t say that this is “unusual”. It’s the SMG4 universe, after all, you can literally start a business and this is completely normal. Just some food for thought.

TAKING THE JOB

Back to the episode, Karen receives a call from the corporation that offers her a job — and when I mean ‘offers’, I mean ‘convinces her to take the job'. According to her former “boss”, it was a hit request on an international terrorist who has escaped from prison and is currently poisoning innocent people, who we later learn to be Marty. The “boss” also stated that Karen may know him. Karen initially refuses since she has abandoned that line of work for her kids, until her “boss” elaborates that if she doesn’t take the request, more lives could be lost, including children. Like her children. With no choice, she takes it.

But, who is this corporation?

Based on what little we have, I can determine this corporation may be affiliated with the government or something similar in power status.

They can keep tabs on all their agents, even if they quit, just as Karen did.

Apparently, they are able to get word on the people who interacted with them but not enough to know their personal lives (the corporation is seemingly uninformed about her kids.)

They are open to receiving requests from third parties.

They don’t take hits for kill’s sake, they prioritize people’s safety.

However, they don’t want any witnesses when taking the hit so they would kill IF they have to. For Karen, they trust her enough to know it won’t come to that since she is a professional, qualified agent.

Other than that, we don’t exactly know. There is a possibility that WOTFI could reveal who they are. But it also lead to Karen having her secret past revealed as well, potentially losing her job(s).

[side ramble: if that were to happen, it would be great if Three hired Karen to come work at his café. He needs the extra help after all, and Karen would be able to have more appearances in the series. I know it's not going to happen but hey, a guy could dream.]

TELL ME WHAT YOU KNOW

Karen catches Four eavesdropping on their conversation and after some convincing, the two decide to work together. They head down to the basement where Karen keeps a stash of her weapons and demands Four to tell her everything he knows about Mario.

Well, first off, I don’t think Mario can be killed except if it was through manipulation of his code due to the cosmology lore. Of course, the real target isn’t Mario but it does bring up the question:

How do you kill Marty?

In the episode 'SMG4: You Made Mario Do This', it has been established that Marty is practically invincible since he was able to stand a nuke for memes’ sake. Water may have slowed him down but it wasn’t enough to outright destroy him. We don't know if he can be destroyed, not even Mario knows — the guy who created him. Likely, for WOTFI, one of the crew’s objectives would be that they have to find Marty’s weakness to defeat him.

Then again, cartoon logic exists.

THE “SPAGHETTI APPRECIATION” CLUB

Karen and Four go out to tail Mario and stumble upon a cult working on the distribution of the sauce. Confused about why Mario would be here, they continued on through the warehouse… Until Four accidentally alerted the cultists of their presence.

[another side ramble: Four, you can’t just say you used to have a deviantART account and not drop the link, dude.]

After an intense between them and the cult, they were able to find Mario and realize that yeah, Mario’s being Mario and had no idea he was even in a cult.

Pure of heart, dumb of ass ❤️

That was when a dying cultist and a jar of “Smarty’s Spaghetti Sauce” revealed that the poison mentioned earlier in the episode was the sauce itself. It also was a horrifying revelation that Karen used the same sauce on the dinner she just left for her kids.

Like I mentioned before, Marty is somehow able to have a pasta sauce business. Not only that but recruit a cult who worship spaghetti to work for him.

The cultists that were in the warehouse are dead but it doesn’t mean it was all of them. Indeed, later on in the episode, more cultists came into Karen's house to fight. For all we know, Marty has multiple distribution plants in the Mushroom Kingdom so perhaps Marty would bring more as part of his army for WOTFI.

AN UNEXPECTED REUNION

Karen, Four, and Mario rush back to her house and were able to stop her kids from eating the spaghetti just in time. However, they’ve faced an unexpected guest: Marty.

Four and Mario immediately recognized him, but Karen was confused as to why a cardboard cutout was with her kids. That was when Four tells her about WOTFI 2023 — which I dubbed ‘The Notebook Arc’ — and how Marty stole Three’s notebook.

[i really have to stop making these side rambles: i absolutely loved it when they referenced WOTFI '23 :) ]

Then, Mario wonders how Marty managed to escape from prison, allowing Karen to piece together that Marty was the real target all along.

Wait a second, wasn’t she there in WOTFI '23? His face was literally all over the casino, how did she not know about Marty?

She was there but it’s likely that she assumed as everyone else did: Marty was just a cardboard cutout. A mascot. How much damage can he really do?

A lot, apparently. He was clever to take advantage of his appearance so that no one would suspect a thing.

Marty greets the familiar faces and reveals his motive behind his poisonous spaghetti sauce: after the events of the Notebook arc, Marty swore revenge on Mario after our local funny man escaped from prison and abandoned him for spaghetti.

“The one person I trusted the most has left me behind for… SPAGHETTI! Now I’ve escaped! …And it's time for… everyone to suffer like I have! At the hands… of the one thing YOU love the MOST.”

This will definitely be his motive for WOTFI 2024, this time going against Mario due to betrayal. Marty said it himself that he would be back, after he escaped with the help of a helicopter from being cornered by Karen.

WELL PLAYED

Even after Marty managed to escape from Karen, she felt relieved that her kids were safe, thanking Four and Mario for doing so.

This leads me to suspect that Karen will have a big role in WOTFI. Thematically, it makes sense since she has yet to carry out the request and would likely give the finishing blow, defeating Marty once and for all. Well, until the crew could find a weakness, of course.

And there you have it: my predictions for WOTFI 2024, all based on the episode 'We Must Kill Mario'! As this arc is just starting, it might be likely we will get to see more hints about Marty’s plan for revenge or anything related to the plot of WOTFI.

this is so random lol but im originally from the dteam fandom and just recently started watching dan and phil a bit so i know almost nothing about them ive seen their sims series and coming out videos and thats about it could u tell me like the basic dan and phil lore for someone who's very new 😭

I love that I got this ask and someone who is a dnp fan who wants to start watching Dream and George on the same day ;_; this one is easier for me so I'm gonna start with it.

Basic lore:

Dan was a fan of Phil when he was a teenager and early/mid 2009 started trying to get that almighty notice by spamming his videos with comments and tweeting him. Phil clearly did notice him and started to engage with him more and more on social media. By September they'd progressed to Skype calls and there were clearly some vibes.

Dan made and posted his first video a few days before he traveled from Reading to Manchester to meet Phil for the first time. They clearly (ahem) got on well, and Dan started traveling to see Phil more and more. Dan's youtube career had a very healthy step up (cough, nepo baby) since he was being immediately and strongly promoted by one of the UK's top youtubers at the time.

By the time Dan was ready to start uni the following year (they met during his gap year), he decided to go to Manchester. Phil moved out of his parents place right around when Dan started uni, and after briefly living in the halls Dan moved in with him. Youtube was starting to be profitable for them both at this point and he wasn't enjoying his law degree so he dropped out in 2011. This was also around the era that they started trying to distance themselves from their (previously publicy confirmed) sexualities and being in a relationship due to various pressures, Dan's mental health, and one fairly big no-fault privacy invasion.

Speedrunning the next few years: Phil got an offer to work with BBC and said he'd do it if Dan could do it with him, which led to them moving to London and getting a radio show with the BBC for a few years. Their youtube careers both exploded, Dan especially, and they had various projects together. In 2014 they started the gaming channel and then ended up getting a book deal and doing their first world tour. Their career continued on in this vague nebulous are they gay, are they together, are they secretly dating women, when will they stop living together bubble until the coming out videos in 2019! Though the last couple of years skewed hard toward glass closet with them being incredibly transparent about being male attracted.

They both came out and Dan confirmed the relationship (though in such a way that people still argue about it now) and then they moved into a place in London they bought and designed from the ground up, sort of cementing the permanance of the relationship. Dan also fucked off for a few years on a very long hiatus (taking the gaming channel with him), tried to get several non-youtube projects launched but failed, did a solo world tour, Phil almost died multiple times, Dan and the gaming channel both came back, and now you're caught up to today!

Has anyone figured out the Twilight movieverse timeline? It's way more confusing than it has any right to be.

For starters, Twilight (2008) starts around two months later than when the book begins. (Which is January) And is presumably set in the same year as it's release.

According to the official wiki, James is killed in Spring 2008 (in movie).

Okay, I'm with it so far. First movie takes place in 2008. And the rest follow the timeline of the books, but in 2008/9 instead of 2005/6. Right?... Right?

Bella's 18th birthday will be Sept. 13 2008 instead. But that's on a Saturday. And Bella went to school on her birthday and on the day after.

Wait, doesn't Edward say his age in New Moon? He does!

And we know what year he was turned and how old he was when he became a vampire.

Some quick math. 1918-17=1901. 1901+109=2010.

Wait, does the start of New Moon happen in 2010? Did Twilight happen in 2010?

Let's check Bella's birthday again. September 13 falls on a Monday in the year 2010. So she'd be at school on her birthday and the next day.

Riley's wanted poster in Eclipse (2010) also gives a clue.

Riley's birthday was changed from October 8, 1986 to April 10, 1990 for the movie. According to his missing person poster, Riley was last seen on Friday, May 21, 2010. And Charlie and Riley's parents have been searching for him for over a year. So, Riley must've been turned in to a vampire in 2009? And in the book timeline, Victoria changed Riley around a month after James's death. Is that the same for the movie? That would mean the Twilight movie, and the beginning of New Moon, takes place in 2009. But that math doesn't math with Edward's age. And doesn't fit Bella's birthday.

If the date that Riley was last scene coincides with the date Victoria bit him, then that works with the idea of Twilight happening in 2010. Riley would have been turned in May 2010 and James would've been killed in April. Bella's 18th birthday would fall on Monday, September 13, 2010. Then most of the rest of New Moon would happen in 2011. As would Eclipse and the Breaking Dawn movies. Which works out with the date printed on the wedding invitations.

But back it up to Eclipse for a minute. Rosalie's newspaper, the one she reads as Carlisle wraps Bella's hand/wrist. It's Friday, June 18, 2010.

This newspaper sets Eclipse in 2010. So the wedding invitations should have been dated 2010. Or the newspaper should be dated Saturday, June 18, 2011.

The movieverse timeline is pretty unclear, but I think there's enough to support that they mainly take place in 2010 and 2011.

Suzume.

Going in, I had no idea what the actual plot of the movie was, or what it would be based around. I guess I should have pieced it together earlier, but as soon as I understood Suzume’s backstory, the movie hit me really fucking hard. From the beginning, I thought “wow, this worm represents a huge existential fear that Japanese people must carry around with them all the time.” But when I saw the date on Suzume’s childhood journal, and all the black-ed out days, I suddenly understood. The sequence of all of the people saying “Ittekimasu”, knowing that they were leaving and that they’d never come back… Fuck.

It brought back a lot of memories. I applied to study abroad in Japan the year that the 2011 earthquake happened. I remember the day of the earthquake and tsunami. I watched the coverage endlessly. My first university was supposed to be Tohoku. For obvious reasons, that program was cancelled. I went to Tokyo instead. One of the first things I did in Japan was stumble upon a night festival that marked the one year anniversary of the disaster. It was intense, completely packed. I remember being in a crowd so tight, all I could see was an impromptu communication tower and a guy with a megaphone directing the crowd. There were fireworks, of course.

I don’t even really know why I’m writing this, but. I guess. I’m really glad that I’m going back to Japan in September. I want to walk around and feel like “I’m a changed person” or “I’m a better person now, than I was before.” I want to feel that so badly. I think it’s something that I really need to heal from.

行ってきて違う人になる。

That need to be able to change things, to have power over the unchangeable...

Lucky Girl

Part Two Summary

We skip forward to 2011, as Evie and Claire are completing their final exams at school. Evie reflects on the year just gone, which was difficult after her heartbreak. She reveals that she and Jude emailed for a while, but eventually he stopped replying to her, and moved on with his life. She obsesses with Claire over his life in Berlin, and his beautiful Danish girlfriend, Astrid. Eventually, once it is time to go to college, Evie knows it is time to put the story behind her and move on, though she still carries the hurt with her.

Evie moves to Dublin to attend art college in September. She and Claire move into an apartment in the centre of town, owned by Claire’s father. At college, Evie becomes fast friends with an eccentric blonde called Marnie, who’s into slam poetry, performative feminism and dating gawky academics. Evie doesn’t have an instant connection or a great lot of faith in Marnie, but she finds her interesting, and unlike the people she knows back home in Tullamore, her dull hometown in the centre of Ireland. She is determined to be a different person in Dublin.

Evie gets along fine in college, but is a little surprised to find that she isn’t the natural talent she thought she was. She is used to being the best at art amongst her peers and being surrounded by equally capable artists has challenged her confidence in her abilities. She projects a lot of her insecurity onto Dean, a twenty-three-year-old student in her life drawing class who makes a pointed effort to find fault in her work. He infuriates her, but others ensure her he’s not actually out to get her. Critique is part of the class, and he’s merely speaking up.

Meanwhile, Marnie becomes invested in Evie as a pet project, and is excited to show her more of the ‘real world’, as she senses Evie’s innocence and inexperience. She takes her to a bar in town one night, and challenges Evie to flirt with at least one boy. This makes Evie anxious. She hasn’t been romantically involved with anyone in so long, and the last boy she even kissed was Jude, over a year ago now.

In the bathroom, Evie runs into Jen and Michelle, Jude’s ex girlfriend. She’s surprised to see them, having thought that she would never encounter Jen again after the summer of 2010. Jen is friendly, as always, and interested in Evie’s life, but Evie decides to be standoffish. Jen apologises for giving Evie the wrong idea about Jude’s intentions at the festival. She says she believed he liked her, and she wanted to encourage things to move along, but that she knows she overstepped. Evie pretends not to care. She pretends it is ancient history, and she’d prefer not to discuss it.

Later, she meets a boy named Stephen, and kisses him in the smoking area. She hates it, but feels triumphant. Jude is no longer the last boy to have kissed her, and now she can move on with her life and stop thinking about him for good.

At college, Dean questions Evie, and wonders why she’s so concerned about his opinion of her work, and by extension, her. She thaws on him, but remains reserved.

At Christmas, Evie and Marnie go to a party at Marnie’s friend, Fiona’s, house. There, Marnie and Fiona make fun of Dean for being working class and wearing clothes from a charity shop. Evie jumps to his defence, suddenly feeling a kinship with him, as she is from a working class background too. Later, she sees him on the stairs. He’s high and looks at her with an intensity that rattles her. When he touches her hand, she lets him. Curious about him, but also about herself.

Later, before going to sleep, Evie tells Marnie about how Dean touched her hand, and Marnie asks whether Evie was uncomfortable. She says no, but that it was an unusual thing for him to do. When Marnie leaves Evie’s house, she texts Dean and tells him off for being a creep. Dean texts Evie and tells her he doesn’t want to be involved in teenage drama. He blocks her before she can defend herself.

Evie returns home for Christmas. She sees Kelly for the first time in months at mass, and is disheartened when she ignores her and her whole family. Evie reflects on the difference between Kelly’s treatment of her and Claire, who she apparently treats with basic decency now that Claire and Shane are officially together. She wonders what about her so offensive to Kelly.

A fraught dinner with her family at her grandmother’s house makes Evie aware that the attitudes they have towards women are offensive. She sees her potential future in the women around the table, as housewives, women trapped in unhappy situations, unable to fulfil their dreams, serving their men and living a bland existence. It terrifies her, as she sees herself in every woman around the table. Bothered by her drunk, alcoholic husband, Evie’s mother takes her frustration out on her daughter, making a point that Evie is drinking too much. An argument explodes, and Evie leaves the table.

The next day, still rattled, Evie head to the local pub with Claire and Shane, where she immediately drinks far too much. She encounters Kelly by the bar, and tries to talk to her, only to be brushed off harshly. She’s hurt and tries to apologise, but Kelly throws a drink at her instead. Evie flies into a rage and flings herself at Kelly, but Shane steps in and hauls her outside for a stern talking to. He tells her he is worried about her, that she’s drinking too much and hanging out with weird people. Evie scoffs, and expresses disdain for Tullamore and all the boring people in it.

Shane takes the time to talk to Evie and gives her space to open up to him about her feelings. She talks about her sadness, her feelings of being unwanted and abandoned by people she cared about. The end of her friendship with Kelly took a toll on her self esteem, and has been worsened by how she has treated her in the aftermath. She talks about Jude too, and how she felt he liked her, and was hurt by her realisation that he didn’t really care for her at all. She asks Shane to tell her more about him, about anything he knows about the situation, but Shane refuses because it’s in the past, and she needs to learn to move on. He gives her wise advice about life, pain, and loss.

On New year’s Eve, Evie and Marnie go out to a club in Dublin. There, she third-wheels with Marnie and her weird boyfriend, and once the clock strikes midnight, she leaves the club in pursuit of pizza.

She joins the queue in the pizzeria, and quickly recognises Dean’s bleach blonde hair in the kitchen. She knew he worked at a pizza restaurant, but hadn’t known it was this one in particular. With drunken confidence, she decides she will wait until he finishes his shift, and confront him about what happened after the house party. She feels he was unjustified to block her without allowing her to explain herself.

When he finishes, they talk on the street, and he tells her she’s being dramatic. He makes a point of unblocking her on his phone, which satisfies her. Her self esteem couldn’t handle another rejection. He realises she’s drunk and insists on walking her home. Though she refuses initially, he convinces her it is safer. They talk the entire way home, and when they reach the door of her building, she inspects him, and decides that she thinks he’s hot.

Evie, Marnie, Dean and Fiona (from the house party) go to a pub one evening and talk about their plans for Evie’s birthday. Evie doesn’t want a party, but the girls insist on throwing one, anyway. Marnie and Fiona ask Dean about who he likes at college, but he’s not interested in the conversation. They ask him to choose between the three girls at the table, and to their horror, he chooses Evie. Marnie can hardly disguise her jealousy and calls an end to the night. She and Fiona leave, but Dean and Evie go to another pub for one last drink.

There, he opens up about his family struggles. His father passed away the summer before, and he is dealing with the aftermath. Evie feels the difference between them and cannot relate to this part of his life. Still, she feels for him, and can imagine the pain.

The conversation turns to lighter things, and Dean tells Evie that he thinks she’s sexy. He kisses her, and she likes it.

When he walks her to her door later, he asks to come in, but she refuses. He pushes her a little, but ultimately respects her ‘no’.

Evie and Claire meet for lunch, and Evie discusses her birthday plans with Claire. Claire becomes awkward and cagey, and alludes to vague reasons she won’t be able to attend the party. When Evie pushes her, she caves, and admits that she and Shane have plans that night. Jude is visiting, and she didn’t want Evie to know, because she knew it would upset her.

This rattles Evie, but she tries to keep her cool. She reminds herself that she’s over him, and doesn’t care about Jude anymore. Claire offers to keep them apart and ensure they’ll never run into one another, but Evie, play-acting the bigger person, tells Claire that he is welcome to come to her party if he wants to. She says she’s fine, but she’s lying. She spends the next week unable to eat out of anxiety.

When her birthday rolls around, Evie is so nervous that she drinks shots of vodka from the bottle she’s hiding in the house. At the party, Evie’s peers from college gather round and watch her open her gifts. Everyone has bought her alcohol, and she realises that this is her personality to them. She is the girl that drinks too much. She’s mortified, but laughs it off and thanks them. Marnie gifts her a comically large box of condoms, as a public, cruel joke about how Evie is still a virgin. She pretends not to be embarrassed, and acts cool, even though she feels like the butt of a big joke.

Dean shows up to her party disastrously drunk, and gifts her a bottle of expensive whiskey, stolen from work. She’s embarrassed to be with him.

A while later, Shane and Claire arrive with Jen and Jude. When Evie sees Jude, she almost chokes on her drink. She’s surprised by how good he looks, as she has spent a year and a half deliberately remembering him as uglier than he is, to make herself feel better. He is utterly beautiful, and just like always, her body does wild things when she looks at him. Still, he’s different. He’s not the skinny, elfin boy he was when she knew him. He looks like a man now.

He’s kind to her, and still charming, though he has lost a lot of his hyper energy. She’s curious about his life now, and longs to learn more, but knows she is different now, too, and she’s not supposed to care so much. They lose each other at the party for a while, only catching up later, when Jude tells her what he thinks is a funny story about a drugged up guy who was trying to do lines of cocaine off the vertical mirror in the bathroom. She realises he’s talking about Dean. Her Dean.

Suddenly ravenous after foregoing food for days, Evie opts to grab something to eat at a kebab shop nearby. Jude offers to go with her for company, and she allows him to. They sit across from one another in the booth, and they have a conversation about their lives. Evie is reserved at first, still stung by the way he left things, and his failure to respond to her emails. He apologises, and explains that his life moved on. He didn’t think she would be so hurt.

Despite her best efforts to be chilly, Jude’s charm eventually melts her armour, and she finds herself talking and laughing with him like she used to. He tells her stories from his world travels and shows her some photographs of his time in Thailand. Evie’s good mood comes crashing down when he scrolls too far on his phone, and accidentally shows her a picture of his girlfriend, Astrid. Her visceral reaction surprises her, but plays it off and is kind about the other woman. Jude, head over heels, gushes about how wonderful she is, and Evie decides it’s time to get back to the party.

When they say goodbye at the end of the evening, Jude promises to stay in touch. She doesn’t believe him, but she’s glad she got to have the closure she wanted.

Massive snowfall hits the city and shuts college down for a week. Evie and Claire spend their time wrapped in blankets at home, watching TV together. Desperate for a walk, Evie eventually leaves the house and heads towards town. While there, she gets a text from Jude, igniting an unexpected conversation. Eventually, he calls her, tired of texting, and she picks up. She wanders around in the snow, chatting and laughing with him. The conversation makes her feel warm inside, but the feeling fades when she arrives home to see Dean lingering on her doorstep. She’s still furious with him after his drunken antics at her birthday party.

Dean is quick to apologise and take complete responsibility for himself. He begs Evie for forgiveness and gives her a thoughtful birthday gift in place of the stolen whiskey. He explains that family troubles have had him feeling down and promises to do better by her. They make up, but when she arrives home, she immediately lies to Claire, and pretends that she still wants nothing to do with him.

Things progress between Evie and Dean, and by the time spring arrives, they are spending a lot of time together. Dean, however, is frustrated by Evie’s reluctance to take things to a more physical place. She lies to him and tells him she is not a virgin, so he doesn’t understand what’s holding her up. Eventually, she agrees on a date and time to do it with him, deliberately choosing a day when she knows Claire won’t be home to find out.

Dean comes over, and after some brief small talk, they have sex for the first time. She’s uncomfortable and unsure of herself, and the experience is awkward. She doesn’t like it so much, but is relieved to have it out of the way. Dean, however, is frustrated by her performance, and promptly leaves for work, leaving her alone in her bedroom. She calls Claire for comfort, but after chickening out and deciding not to share the truth, calls Jude instead. She doesn’t tell him what happened, but they have a conversation that calms her, nonetheless. It seems he has that effect on her.

As the college year winds down, things deteriorate between Evie and Dean. Family troubles have left him stressed and angry, and he takes his frustration out on her. Evie walks on eggshells around him, terrified to upset him, lest he insult her, or tell her she’s an idiot for a simple mistake. He still stays over at her house whenever Claire is out, but Evie has started to feel like a means to an end, an object for him to use, rather than an equal. She likes Dean, but she doesn’t like him when he behaves like this. In fact, he frightens her.

One evening, Claire confronts Evie, having found a pile of condom wrappers in the bin. She is confused and hurt, not understanding why Evie hasn’t spoken to her about her new relationship. Evie breaks down and admits that she was embarrassed, and that she knew Claire wouldn’t approve of Dean. Claire admits that she’s not thrilled about the idea, but that she would have liked to have been there for her, and to at least know what was going on, as Evie used to share everything with her. Claire tells her she’s become tired of the way she’s been acting, that she loves her, but she’s almost impossible to be around lately. She says she needs time away from the friendship.

In early summer, Jude returns to Dublin, and invites Evie to a movie night at Jen’s house. She has just had a moment with Dean that upset her, but she goes anyway, despite not feeling her best. They watch films together and eat snacks, and Evie enjoys herself for the first time in quite a while. Eventually, however, Evie’s relationship with Dean comes up in conversation, and Jude and Jen are taken aback. They’re surprised she would date someone like him, based on what they saw of his behaviour at Evie’s birthday party, but Evie attempts to defend him.

Feeling disrespected by their attitudes, she storms off to the bathroom to calm down. When she comes out, Jude is waiting in the hallway. He asks if he can speak to her.

They talk in Jen’s bedroom, but Evie is already bursting with rage. She explodes at him and wonders how he has the audacity to give input on her relationship after what he put her through. Once again, he tries to apologise and explain himself, but she won’t hear it. She projects all of her anger about Dean onto him and blindsides him with her accusations. He doesn’t know what to say. Evie insists that they cannot be friends, admits that she never stopped having feelings for him, and decides that it’s not healthy to stay in touch. She claims he makes her feel bad about herself, and then she storms out of the house into the rain. He doesn’t try to stop her.

Isolated and without supports left, Evie has hit rock bottom emotionally. When she and Dean go to a party at Marnie’s, a palatial seaside house on the Southside of the city, the vibes are instantly horrible. Evie senses something is off between her and Marnie, and feels like people around her are whispering about her, too.

Dean, who is only affectionate towards Evie when he’s on drugs, kisses her at the pool. She’s thrilled that he’s not embarrassed to do it in front of other people. When he takes her to Marnie’s home gym and tries to have sex, however, his demeanour changes upon her refusal. He berates her for being a prude, then leaves her alone while he goes to spend the evening with other people instead.

Later, Evie finds Dean, Marnie and Fiona among their other friends in the living room. Despite feeling awful, she feels she has nothing more to lose by sitting with them. They make subtle, hurtful comments about her that hammer further at her self esteem, and eventually, Dean produces cocaine for them all to take. Marnie comments about how Evie could not afford to pay for her share, but Dean says he’ll cover her, challenging her to take it, though he knows she’s not comfortable around drugs. In order to prove a point, Evie does it, but instantly hates it. She wanders around the grounds on her own, feeling insane.

Eventually, Evie finds Marnie’s ensuite bathroom, where she hides in the bath and waits for the drugs to wear off. While there, Marnie and Fiona come into the bedroom. She can hear them talking through the walls. They say vicious things about Evie and tear her character to pieces. They discuss her sex life with Dean and relay private details that Dean has shared with them. Evie is disgusted to hear her intimate life discussed like this. The girls talk about their own relationships with Dean, comparing experiences, and Evie realises that he has been sleeping with all three of them. She is the only one that didn’t know.

Hurt and angry, Evie rushes out of the bathroom. She realises it is too late to get the bus home, so she will be stuck in the house for the entire night. When she comes downstairs, she runs into Dean, flirting with another girl from college. They have an unpleasant interaction in the hallway, and he follows her outside to the front garden to talk.

Dean is cruel. He brushes off her complaints and claims that she was stupid and naïve for ever thinking he’d be different. He says he was only ever interested in seeing if he could get her to sleep with him, as a challenge, since she was wound so tightly. Upon realising that her feelings for him were real, he laughs, and as Evie replays their relationship, she can see all of his manipulative tactics so clearly. He had been playing with her emotions right from the beginning. She’s humiliated, realising that her inexperience and trusting nature caused this. She runs to a nearby beach, and sobs inconsolably.

Evie calls Shane, the only friend she feels she can talk to, and tells him what happened. Though it is late and he is more than an hour away, he immediately gets into his car and comes to get her. When he arrives, he’s concerned about her clothes (She’s still in her bathing suit), and she tells him she’s afraid to go into the house and get her bag, as she cannot face the others. Shane gets it for her. He puts her into his car and takes her home, as the sun rises over the city.
