the energy between darrow and cassius is literally

they’re the blueprint for toxic soulmates. the betrayal? the longing? the dramatic speeches about honor and love cloaked in subtext? it’s giving shakespearean tragedy with a dash of repressed feelings.

cassius calling darrow “my friend” while looking at him like he’s the moon and stars? darrow sparing cassius over and over because “he deserves better”? their ENTIRE arc in morning star? please. these two are not straight. pierce brown, explain yourself

If i had a nickel for everytime an author writes a love triangle between two men and a woman and once the love triangle is resolved the two men are still friends but it just comes off as the two men are madly in love and one of them happens to also really love his wife while being really gay id have two nickels, which isnt alot but its weird i happened twice, right?

pierce brown really did end the first red rising trilogy with the female love interest becoming the new ultimate leader and his male protagonist becoming what is essentially her trophy husband, and honestly he’s so real for that.

i know we all hate lysander and whatever but i think what makes his character so compelling is how pierce has written him to feel like he is darrow’s double, and while the reader slowly sees through that, most other characters don’t. they don’t know darrow like we do, or like darrow’s family know him. most golds just think he is this untouchable iron gold, both a genius and a monster. and lysander is desperate (since he was a boy) to be exactly like darrow.

but in reality, we know the truth, lysander is actually darrow’s foil. he is the opposite of everything darrow truly is, because he never got to know darrow. he only knows the darrow from the institute, from the hc’s, the darrow that killed his grandmother. by trying to be like darrow, lysander became everything darrow is not.

can’t wait for lysander to finally understand that.

I’m halfway through Golden Son and don’t get me wrong I love this series but Darrows utter shock at the worst human being you’ve ever met betraying him not once but multiple times is so fucking funny. These people are the pitch smeared depths of humanity manifest and he’s gonna win them over with the power of friendship. God bless.

“so, they’re rivals.”

“oh okay, like they hate each other?”

“well, yes, but also they’re kind of obsessed with each other.”

“sure, except one of them kills the other’s brother, and they swordfight in a sweaty duel that’s 80% longing stares and 20% shirtless posturing.”

“and then they’re forced to team up later, but the entire vibe is just ‘if we were the last two men on mars’ energy.”

“no, no, they’re just brothers. except for the part where they whisper about honor while bleeding out dramatically in each other’s arms… anyway, red rising is about revolution and space politics or something.”
