After finding her son’s body, McKinnie took to Facebook to share the graphic photos of her son, which have since gone viral. “They lynched my baby. I’m sick and losing my mind but I had to let the world see what they did to my baby!” she added. The hashtag #WhatHappenedToDanyeJones has made its way through Twitter and other social media platforms. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ McKinnies is a well-known activist in her community. She is a former member of the Ferguson activist group Lost Voices and participated in protests for #MichaelBrown. Brown was fatally shot on Aug. 2014 by a police officer. Jones’ death is the third to strike the city of Ferguson’s activists after #DeAndreJoshua was found dead in his car with two gunshot wounds to the head on the night of the Ferguson verdict in 2014. Two years later, activist #DarrenSeals was found dead in his car with two gunshot wounds to the head as well. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Another activist, #EdwardCrawford, who famously was photographed throwing a tear gas canister back at police, was also found dead in his car. Let’s be clear this is not in service of Black people. In fact this has nothing to do with Black people. The fact that the statement itself can even be levied by a racist organization who traditionally hates the movement for Black Lives speaks multitudes about where we are now. Black Lives Matter started in Ferguson. Protesters were beat and spit on by people at these games. Many were arrested and fought cases against the Cardinals. Bassem and Seals have to be turning over in their graves. Every time we protested at these games it was nothing but pure aggression exhibited towards us. Now this same racist organization is using the statement they once hated so dearly to validate their own existence. Not ours. This has nothing to do with eradicating poverty. This has nothing to do with reparations. This has nothing to do with defunding the pigs, nor does it have anything to do with justice for Breonna Taylor (and all victims of state sanctioned violence). This also has nothing to do with North St.Louis and the Black infant mortality rate. THIS is solely in service of themselves and the apparatus which says whiteness is a priority. We are empowered by this whatsoever. And only after whiteness embraces you as a valid political entity can you hold space in the court of the public political zeitgeist without being ran off to jail. When the oligarchs and the oppressors are speaking the same language as the “movement” there is an engrossing problem at bay here. These shirts are not in service to George Floyd’s legacy. #EdwardCrawford, a St. Louis resident who was the subject of an iconic photo epitomizing the 2014 protests in #Ferguson, #Missouri, is dead. Crawford was photographed throwing a flaming tear gas canister in an image broadcast widely during the months of unrest that followed the fatal shooting of #MichaelBrown Jr. by a police officer. His death was confirmed to #NBC News by the St. Louis Office of the Medical Examiner. Investigator #RosePsara said Crawford was pronounced deceased shortly before midnight on Thursday at 1435 Salisbury Street in the Hyde Park neighborhood. The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department told NBC News that Crawford shot himself in the backseat of a car while it was moving, according to two witnesses who were seated in the front of the car. "The victim began expressing he was distraught over personal matters to the witnesses," said the police department's Public Information Officer Leah Freeman. "The witnesses heard the victim rummaging in the backseat, then heard a gunshot and observed the victim had sustained a gunshot wound to the head." Crawford was pronounced dead on the scene. Police said an investigation is ongoing and, while initially declared a suicide, the official cause of death will be determined by an autopsy. According to his father, Edward Crawford Sr., the 27-year-old was the #father of four young #children, had just gotten a new apartment, and was training for a warehouse job. "I don't believe it was a #suicide," the senior Crawford told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, which first reported the death on Friday morning. It's not the first time a notable Ferguson #protester has died from gunfire. In September 2016, the body of Ferguson activist #DarrenSeals was discovered inside a burning car. Seals had been shot, and police declared the death a homicide. In November 2014 on the night a grand jury declined to convict the Ferguson police officer who fatally shot Brown, 20-year-old #DeandreJoshua was found shot in the head with severe burns after being lit on fire.
