Nuclear rockets could travel to Mars in half the time â but designing the reactors that would power them isnât easy
by Dan Kotlyar, Associate Professor of Nuclear and Radiological Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology
NASA plans to send crewed missions to Mars over the next decade â but the 140 million-mile (225 million-kilometer) journey to the red planet could take several months to years round trip.
This relatively long transit time is a result of the use of traditional chemical rocket fuel. An alternative technology to the chemically propelled rockets the agency develops now is called nuclear thermal propulsion, which uses nuclear fission and could one day power a rocket that makes the trip in just half the time.
Nuclear fission involves harvesting the incredible amount of energy released when an atom is split by a neutron. This reaction is known as a fission reaction. Fission technology is well established in power generation and nuclear-powered submarines, and its application to drive or power a rocket could one day give NASA a faster, more powerful alternative to chemically driven rockets.
NASA and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency are jointly developing NTP technology. They plan to deploy and demonstrate the capabilities of a prototype system in space in 2027 â potentially making it one of the first of its kind to be built and operated by the U.S.
Nuclear thermal propulsion could also one day power maneuverable space platforms that would protect American satellites in and beyond Earthâs orbit. But the technology is still in development.
I am an associate professor of nuclear engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology whose research group builds models and simulations to improve and optimize designs for nuclear thermal propulsion systems. My hope and passion is to assist in designing the nuclear thermal propulsion engine that will take a crewed mission to Mars.
Nuclear versus chemical propulsion
Conventional chemical propulsion systems use a chemical reaction involving a light propellant, such as hydrogen, and an oxidizer. When mixed together, these two ignite, which results in propellant exiting the nozzle very quickly to propel the rocket.
These systems do not require any sort of ignition system, so theyâre reliable. But these rockets must carry oxygen with them into space, which can weigh them down. Unlike chemical propulsion systems, nuclear thermal propulsion systems rely on nuclear fission reactions to heat the propellant that is then expelled from the nozzle to create the driving force or thrust.
In many fission reactions, researchers send a neutron toward a lighter isotope of uranium, uranium-235. The uranium absorbs the neutron, creating uranium-236. The uranium-236 then splits into two fragments â the fission products â and the reaction emits some assorted particles.
youtube
More than 400 nuclear power reactors in operation around the world currently use nuclear fission technology. The majority of these nuclear power reactors in operation are light water reactors. These fission reactors use water to slow down the neutrons and to absorb and transfer heat. The water can create steam directly in the core or in a steam generator, which drives a turbine to produce electricity.
Nuclear thermal propulsion systems operate in a similar way, but they use a different nuclear fuel that has more uranium-235. They also operate at a much higher temperature, which makes them extremely powerful and compact. Nuclear thermal propulsion systems have about 10 times more power density than a traditional light water reactor.
Nuclear propulsion could have a leg up on chemical propulsion for a few reasons.
Nuclear propulsion would expel propellant from the engineâs nozzle very quickly, generating high thrust. This high thrust allows the rocket to accelerate faster.
These systems also have a high specific impulse. Specific impulse measures how efficiently the propellant is used to generate thrust. Nuclear thermal propulsion systems have roughly twice the specific impulse of chemical rockets, which means they could cut the travel time by a factor of 2.
Nuclear thermal propulsion history
For decades, the U.S. government has funded the development of nuclear thermal propulsion technology. Between 1955 and 1973, programs at NASA, General Electric and Argonne National Laboratories produced and ground-tested 20 nuclear thermal propulsion engines.
But these pre-1973 designs relied on highly enriched uranium fuel. This fuel is no longer used because of its proliferation dangers, or dangers that have to do with the spread of nuclear material and technology.
The Global Threat Reduction Initiative, launched by the Department of Energy and National Nuclear Security Administration, aims to convert many of the research reactors employing highly enriched uranium fuel to high-assay, low-enriched uranium, or HALEU, fuel.
High-assay, low- enriched uranium fuel has less material capable of undergoing a fission reaction, compared with highly enriched uranium fuel. So, the rockets needs to have more HALEU fuel loaded on, which makes the engine heavier. To solve this issue, researchers are looking into special materials that would use fuel more efficiently in these reactors.
NASA and the DARPAâs Demonstration Rocket for Agile Cislunar Operations, or DRACO, program intends to use this high-assay, low-enriched uranium fuel in its nuclear thermal propulsion engine. The program plans to launch its rocket in 2027.
As part of the DRACO program, the aerospace company Lockheed Martin has partnered with BWX Technologies to develop the reactor and fuel designs.
The nuclear thermal propulsion engines in development by these groups will need to comply with specific performance and safety standards. Theyâll need to have a core that can operate for the duration of the mission and perform the necessary maneuvers for a fast trip to Mars.
Ideally, the engine should be able to produce high specific impulse, while also satisfying the high thrust and low engine mass requirements.
Ongoing research
Before engineers can design an engine that satisfies all these standards, they need to start with models and simulations. These models help researchers, such as those in my group, understand how the engine would handle starting up and shutting down. These are operations that require quick, massive temperature and pressure changes.
The nuclear thermal propulsion engine will differ from all existing fission power systems, so engineers will need to build software tools that work with this new engine.
My group designs and analyzes nuclear thermal propulsion reactors using models. We model these complex reactor systems to see how things such as temperature changes may affect the reactor and the rocketâs safety. But simulating these effects can take a lot of expensive computing power.
Weâve been working to develop new computational tools that model how these reactors act while theyâre starting up and operated without using as much computing power.
My colleagues and I hope this research can one day help develop models that could autonomously control the rocket.

Former DARPA director and now Google executive, Regina Dugan, wants you to swallow ID Microchips.
She goes on to explain how the microchip works once inside the body. The pill has a small chip inside of it with a switch, when you swallow it, the acids in your stomach serve as the electrolyte and that powers it up. And the switch goes on and off and creates an 18 bit ECG wide signal in your body and essentially your entire body becomes your authentication token.
Just FYI this video is from 2012, so you can imagine the tech they already have.

NEUROTECHNOLOGY: CALL IT MIND CONTROL
BRETT MICHAEL VATCHER
The United States is currently testing advanced military-grade weapons and quantum computer systems on the unexpected global population. Targeted Individuals are tortured and tormented every day of their lives through DARPAâs Next-Generation Nonsurgical Neurotechnology (N3) Program utilizing CIA agents â acting as Artificial Intelligence [AI]. In the future, the system will be marketed as deviceless âSpatial Technology.âÂ
ITâS SPATIAL: ITâS ALL IN MY HEAD.
Neurotechnology is a brain-computer interface [BCI] connecting to the central nervous system. Call it Mind Control.Â
If one can control the mind, they can control the body.
MIND CONTROL:Â Mind reading, mind and body control, 24/7 tracking, brainwashing, dream manipulation, spatial holograms as well as physical assaults and verbal harassment produced by CIA agents. This is accomplished by combining data sets from 5G towers and directed energy weapon satellites [DEW]. The system connects to the central nervous system â including the brain â and operates without a device. Invisible physical assaults are constant. Even if well documented are challenging to prove. The system can cause sensations anywhere on the body.
DOMAIN: Every human has a domain attached to their mind. This is where the agents broadcast their transmissions and control the victim. âAll living things have a domain. Plants, insects, animals and humans. Domains have infinite capabilities. The entire global population is replicated within human domains â in vertical cubicle formation. These replicants, as the agents call them, are tortured constantly. The replicants watch everything you do from your perception. This is the New World Order plan. The subdomain advent calendar is located behind the perception. Everything a person sees, hears and thinks is recorded utilizing a BCI. All memories from 2019-present can be viewed like a film. Domains are recorded, as well.
âEVERYTHING YOU DO, SAY AND THINK CAN â AND WILL â BE USED AGAINST YOU FOR ETERNITY. THIS IS THE NEW WORLD ORDER. PLEASE HOLD WHILE WE COLLECT YOUR THOUGHTS.â âNew World Order
BRAINWASHING: Brainwashing the victim leads to behavioral modifications and mood control. The agents create âprogramsâ that can be turned on or off at any time. Subliminal messages come in the form of faint visions flashing in the front of oneâs mind. Victimâs vision becomes increasingly grainier over time â and depending on active sequencers.
The agents create intricate dream sequences to affect the victimâs subconscious. Dream sequences combine people, places and things that are familiar with the victim. They can be extremely lucid.
VOICE-TO-SKULL: DARPA started a program called LifeLog in 2003. They refer to it as the V2K era. Itâs when they began recording transcripts of all of our thoughts. Mind-reading. This technology is also known as Microwave Hearing, Synthetic Telepathy, Voice-of-God weapon and is utilized for traceless mental torture. Agents constantly disrupt, censor and redirect the victimâs freedom of thought. Victimâs get wrongly labeled as mentally-ill [schizophrenia] when reporting on this. V2K is also used for deception and impersonation of voices.
News reports in the media describedLifeLog as the âdiary to end all diaries â a multimedia, digital record of everywhere you go and everything you see, hear, read, say and touchâ. âUSA TODAY
NO PRIVACY: The system completely disregards fundamental human rights such as: privacy, mental and physical health, safety, data security, family security, financial security, etc. Freedom of thought â or cognitive liberty â is a God-given right. The technology was deployed without implementation of new laws and there is little to no oversight, as the CIA has full control of the system.
Welcome to Infinity. Youâre Welcome.

DARPA Brain Technologies: Electrical Prescriptions (ElectRx) This is some pretty old tech source. Wonder what kind of psychedelics though? The ElectRx program aims to help the human body heal itself through neuromodulation of organ functions using ultraminiaturized devices, approximately the size of individual nerve fibers, which could be delivered through minimally invasive injection.
Neural Engineering System Design (NESD) Looks like they're beating Elon to the punch here. The NESD program aims to develop an implantable neural interface able to provide unprecedented signal resolution and data-transfer bandwidth between the brain and the digital world.
Next-Generation Nonsurgical Neurotechnology (N3) The N3Â program aims to develop a safe, portable neural interface system capable of reading from and writing to multiple points in the brain at once. Whereas the most advanced existing neurotechnology requires surgical implantation of electrodes, N3Â is pursuing high-resolution technology that works without the requirement for surgery so that it can be used by able-bodied people.
Six Paths to the Nonsurgical Future of Brain-Machine Interfaces
Nonsurgical Neural Interfaces Could Significantly Expand Use of Neurotechnology Targeted Neuroplasticity Training (TNT) Matrix Shit The TNT program seeks to advance the pace and effectiveness of cognitive skills training through the precise activation of peripheral nerves that can in turn promote and strengthen neuronal connections in the brain. TNT will pursue development of a platform technology to enhance learning of a wide range of cognitive skills, with a goal of reducing the cost and duration of the Defense Departmentâs extensive training regimen, while improving outcomes.
Neuro Function, Activity, Structure and Technology (Neuro-FAST) The Neuro-FAST program seeks to enable unprecedented visualization and decoding of brain activity to better characterize and mitigate threats to the human brain, as well as facilitate development of brain-in-the loop systems to accelerate and improve functional behaviors. The program has developed CLARITY, a revolutionary tissue-preservation method, and builds off recent discoveries in genetics, optical recordings and brain-computer interfaces. Restoring Active Memory (RAM) The RAM program aims to develop and test a wireless, fully implantable neural-interface medical device for human clinical use. The device would facilitate the formation of new memories and retrieval of existing ones in individuals who have lost these capacities as a result of traumatic brain injury or neurological disease.

Autonomous Robotic Surgeons
I've been writing about this for a while. I know some people hate the idea, but I suspect that that's because it's new and unproven. But consider the possibilities: Most surgeries involve a lead surgeon and assistant surgeons. Imagine if we could change that to one human and one robot. That could quickly ramp up the number of surgeons available, which means less wait-time for your surgery. It will likely also bring down medical costs, esp as times goes on. (I may not like the idea of a robot surgeon, but I might opt for it if the surgery will cost only $20k instead of $40k.) For developing nations that are short on skilled doctors and which have high numbers of rural residents, this is a potential game changer. It could mean the difference between suffering and getting a surgery at all. (The robot may just do the surgery on its own, or it may tele-communicate with a doctor elsewhere to collaborate.) The availability of more doctors and advanced AI diagnostics can also mean finding and treating diseases much sooner, before they start producing serious problems.
Additionally, robotics only improves over time. Unlike humans, which take a long time to gain knowledge and skills, robots learn programmatically and by sharing knowledge (every robo-surgeon can easily share what they 'learned' with the other robo-surgeons, so they all get better with each procedure.) This will ultimately mean safer surgeries, less intrusive surgeries, fewer mistakes or accidents, faster healing time, better health outcomes, more time for researching more advanced medical techniques, and more.
Anyways, the fact that DARPA is interested in this tells me two things: 1. It is difficult. 2. It is feasible.
~~~
Within three years, the research team hopes to demonstrate a robotic surgical device capable of removing tumors from the trachea and prostate without the intervention of a surgeon. The team also foresees this research applying to uterine fibroids, bladder tumors, spine procedures, and brain cysts, among other clinical applications. As described in the ARPA-H proposal, these would initially be demonstrated in simulated conditions and not on live patients...
Webster said one of the progress milestones will involve having the robot make situationally aware statements like, "I think I should cut here, with the goal of removing this volume of tissue." A human surgeon would then confirm or adjust the action. These interactions will be aggregated to continue to improve robotic performance to the point of fully independent autonomy.
"Creating a system that can learn from human surgeons - and continue to improve performance - will be a game changer," Herrell said.
Orbital Sciences X-42 Pop-Up Upper Stage or Upper Stage Flight Experiment (USFE)
"In the 1996/1997 time frame, the U.S. Air Force began to define plans for building blocks of a future Military Spaceplane (MSP) system. The full scope of these plans came to public attention in January 1998, when the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Space Vehicles Directorate (VS) requested proposals from the industry to study various aspects of advanced military space technology. This included research related to a potential MSP system. The latter was to cover concepts for RLVs (Reusable Launch Vehicles), SMVs (Space Manoeuver Vehicles, see X-37/X-40), so-called CAVs (Common Aero Vehicles, see X-41/Falcon) and finally pop-up upper stages. Pop-up upper stages were defined as rocket stages, which could be used by RLVs or ELVs (Expendable Launch Vehicles) to boost payloads to their final orbits and/or to perform orbital manoeuvers.
Earlier, in 1997, the AFRL had already begun a formal program to develop a pop-up upper-stage, named the Modular Insertion Stage (MIS). The MIS was defined as an expendable, low-cost, liquid-fueled upper stage, which could be scaled by using one to three rocket engines (hence the 'modular' label) to suit all expected user needs. It had already been determined in AFRL-sponsored studies in 1997 by TRW and Rocketdyne, that the best-suited propellants for the requirements (storable, non-toxic fuels) would be hydrogen peroxide and kerosene. Subsequently, AFRL cooperated with NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in funding and management of further development of the MIS. MSFC had its 'Bantam' low cost lift program running since 1997, and this provided a suitable contractual framework for the MIS effort. It was decided to build an MIS flight demonstrator, called Upper Stage Flight Experiment (USFE), and Orbital Sciences Corp. (OSC) was eventually awarded a contract to design and build the USFE. At some time in late 1997 or early 1998, the designation X-42A was officially allocated to an expendable demonstrator for pop-up upper-stage technology. However, this designation has so far not been further used in any official announcements, and therefore it is unclear if it will be actually applied to the USFE project (in fact, that doesn't appear too likely; see RLV section below).
Construction and component testing of the USFE prototype proceeded through mid-2003 on a relatively low-key basis. However, in that year a tank failure during a helium pressurization test completely destroyed the engine. Since then, a second prototype has been built, but propellant tank leakage problems have again delayed the program. If tests with a new tank, scheduled for early 2006, are successful, the USFE could be ready for a flight demonstration by May 2007. For this test, the USFE would be fitted as the third stage on top of a two-stage booster provided by OSC (most likely the first two stages of a retired Minuteman missile).
X-42 RLV Demonstrator
The X-42 designator has also been unofficially used by the AFRL and the industry in 2002 for a possible RLV demonstrator. Orbital Sciences Corp. (OSC) has presented a design, which is based on its Multi-Role Reusable Vehicle (MRRV) concept, a winged vehicle powered by a single RS-27 rocket engine. The significance of the use of 'X-42' for this proposal is not quite clear, but it appears to emphasize that the vehicle could be a reusable solution to the upper stage requirement.
OSC X-42 RLV Demonstrator
By 2003, this design had slightly evolved, featuring a single vertical tail on the fuselage instead of the wingtip fins. A single CAV (Common Aero Vehicle) could be carried atop the fuselage and launched in space. OSC's X-42 was equipped with a conventional tricycle landing gear and a braking parachute in the aft fuselage. The vehicle was designed for versatile trajectories and short turn-around time on the ground (14 days), making it a true 'space launch workhorse'.
The X-42 label has also been informally used in a few papers and presentations to refer to other proposed test vehicles related to RLV and TSTO (Two Stage To Orbit) technology. The acronym RAST (Reusable Access to Space Technology) has also been mentioned together with X-42. All said, it looks as if the X-42 designation is currently not tied to a specific program or vehicle."
