After a hot shower, Etain and Darman fall back into bed, both sated and exhausted. Darman brushes Etain’s wet hair out of her face and pulls her into his chest. As long as they were alone, he would steal as much of her as he could.

Etain takes a deep breath, memorizing the way Darman feels—the firmness of his body against hers, the strength with which he holds her, and the peaceful way his mind comes to rest. He is a glowing light, bright and warm like a campfire at full burn.

The future is as inevitable as the turning of the galaxy, but for now, Etain basks in Darman. She looks up from where she’d curled her face into his chest to find him staring at her intently.

“What?” she grins.

“I’m counting your freckles.”

“Counting my freckles? Why?”

“Someone’s got to,” he insists.

Etain giggles, running her fingers over his shoulder. “How many are there?”

“At least ten.”

They both break into a fit of laughter. Etain rolls onto Darman, lying on him like a big pillow, and stares down into his face. They’d already made love twice and three times would be too much, not to mention surely the others would be back soon.

She kisses him anyway with nothing more than a brush of her lips. “Now how many?”

“I’m up to twenty-nine.” Darman grazes her skin with his fingertips, making idle shapes along her back, and if Etain doesn’t concentrate on his mind, then she can let the randomness of his touches cause a shiver.

They keep pausing to stare at each other, and Etain continues to marvel at how different he is from his brothers. It’s in his eyes, and the way he smiles, nothing at all like Niner or Fi or Atin or any of Delta.

Darman’s head rests back onto the pillows. Etain is staring at him, and he isn’t used to someone who isn’t one of his brothers paying such close attention to him. “You don’t have to read my mind, you know. You could just ask.”

“II wasn’t—oh, Darman.” Etain sits up.

And Darman flinches, realizing he’s said something wrong based on the way she frowns. “I didn’t mean it like that.”

“I know.” Etain smiles, a little sad to think her Jedi-ness would always be strange to Darman. “I was only admiring your eyes.”

“My eyes?” Darman’s brow knits. He thinks she’s the one with eyes worth admiring, green with flecks of amber.

“Mhm.” Etain brushes her hand over his forehead. “And your nose.” She follows the bridge of his nose. “And your lips.” Her index finger lands on his lips, one of the softest parts of him.

Darman flushes. There is a joke in there about saying he’s one of a kind. He forgets to say it as Etain traces the line of his mouth.

Her hand goes lower, down his throat, over his collarbone. When Darman locks eyes with her darkened gaze, he doesn’t have to read her mind to know what she’s thinking.

So I’m going through all my bookmarks ahead of starting True Colors and I ran into this fun one in Hard Contact:

It was just so jarring at this point to know where they end up and see this “shared trauma” description because, well, absolutely.

Sure they had a meet-cute, to a degree,

and I found Darman’s faith in her as a driving force for her success and his interest to be sweet. But the trauma of their critical mission on Qiilura and first kills in action is also the basis of this bond. Not that Darman would probably notice given *gestures vaguely at the state of clone childhood*

I felt a little guilty about reading the book with my ship-brain turned on after reading those lines about the irrevocable bond of shared trauma. But it makes for an interesting dynamic, so much that I realized I have seen it before and been powerless not to ship…

I watched TCW S7 and Rebels in rapid succession (last year maybe?) and was devastated about how long Ahsoka and Rex had been apart and was definitely filling those gaps in time in with ship-brain before that.

I didn’t ever think about it that way until the season finale when they only had each other at the end of all the Order 66 devastation (while I think they held equal power and footing before then between Rex’s experience and bio age vs Ahsoka’s force powers and hierarchical military position over him, she was still baby, so no). Not saying that’s why anyone else chooses to ship but damn, the siege of Mandalore, Order 66, and the potential joint healing in the rebellion era really flipped that switch for me. There is so much love there, that is undeniable in canon, but it feels like the exceptional horror of the shared experience they had with Rex fighting Order 66 and them losing everyone else to it made me more inclined to view a potential for romance too.

So yeah. I’m a little unsettled now that I think about both ships together and rexsoka foundations, but who am I to deny fictional characters some comfort? Trauma-bond ships, am I right?

AHHHHHHHH!

Okay I'm not even sure I've actually processed everything this book made me feel. I've gotten like 'teary eyed' reading books before but never tears streaming down my face as I read. I'm gonna try to do this in a semi-coherent way, but no promises.

Darman has been one of my favorites, if not my actual favorite, since the beginning of the series and I was warned (thank you @justanotherdikutsimp) to brace myself and have a happy AU ready for him. Which is how I'm coping after Etain's death.

I can't say I didn't expect it, I really did, I expected it, but the way it was done was so much more intense than I thought it was going to be. The panic that the padawan's are going through, the trooper rushing in, it was such a sudden chaotic moment and it was so easy to see everything from every person's POV after getting to know the characters so well. Also the contrast between Darman staying with Niner vs Delta leaving Sev (WHY OHMYGOSH I HATED IT) --

I had to take a break go to sleep because it was 5am again after Etain's funeral scene (BABY KAD AND THE STUFFED ANIMAL I HATE IT HERE) and so I didn't get to see anything but Darman's initial reaction to her death and not him dealing with the aftermath. When I got to those scenes the next night though, I was crying again. His reaction of shutting down and just becoming a different person was so realistic but so so sad. He's lost so much, wanted so much that was just within reach (I knew those holopics they took with Kad would come back to haunt me, and also Kal apparently) and I'll never be over this little family.

As a side note beetles and all beetle related analogies are going to depress me FOREVER from the first instance with the bright wings (is that what they're called??) to when they're racing the beetles in O66 and Dar is wondering why they don't just fly away WHEN THEY CAN.

Etain's master maybe was a good Jedi but not a good teacher. It happens, that someone is good in their field, but they just not good with children/young people or how to pass the knowledge.

And Etain's self-esteem issues made her prioritize to appease Kal at all cost, because if he can't accept her as a family member, who will??? She felt like just like the clones, she couldn't see her future outside the Jedi Order or the GAR.

I think Darman could have been a friend to Etain. There was that potential for them to be a true brothers in arms sharing pain, and then happiness and pleasures too.

But Etain didn't think she is worth anything on her own.

And then she got herself pregnant. Because she thought this way she could be useful, that's how she interpreted the situation of the clones. It wasn't really about the clones. It was about finding herself a purpose.

Probably Kal's influence of his plan of giving back the clones their full life-span made her thinking like this way too. His passion is contaigious. But Etain and Kal are the same. Only Kal realized what is his purpose as an 50 years old, and Etain thought she found it at 20 (or even younger?). She was young.

Kal finding a mean to give back the life-span and Etain gives a legacy. A true fucked up Father-Daughter bonding moment in Etain's head, even Kal said "girl, wtf was in your head when you came up with this shit".

People think the effects of the last century is behind us, but this book was still written in the early 2000's. If I just think about my little post-soviet shithole, if your in-laws didn't accept you, you were going to have a bad time for the rest of your life, desperately trying to pretend mommy-dear and daddy-dear loves you somewhere deep inside, because, well, divorce was also a shameful act even in the 90's. And that was 30+ years ago. Reading RepComm with today's standards is just ridiculous.

And I love this cultural difference between the clones and natural born people! What people see a value in themselves and in other people. For Clones, loyalty, friendship, love, trust and being dependable is everything. And thinking that clones work with the same frequency as a natural born person would do with the same morals and values and dreams and life goals is just plain insane. They just don't work like that. Etain and Kal always forgets this.

I think Darman had everything what he needed in Etain. Only Etain didn't see herself with Darman's eyes.
