Ah, I might not have exactly been clear lol. Still, very interesting info! It sounds like, as long as they don't overwhelm them, they could continue to function with some (but not many) dark plants on them! I wonder if they could sort of manage an (admittedly fragile) mutualistic symbiosis with some of these darkplants... Perhaps, while not being able to grant them the ability of true flight, they may be able to gain the ability to glide with two "wings" of dark plant leaves, acting like the flaps of skin seen in real world gliding squirrels and lizards! Maybe they'd glide over areas flooded with dark water, their dark plant leaf "wings" spreading dark plant spores or seeds below them. And as the spores/seeds grew into full fledged dark plants, they'd concentrate the darkness in the water within them, perhaps helping to clean the waters!

You can probably tell that I'm a fan of the idea of the Darkness in Sky not being necessarily bad lol. I prefer the idea that both it and the Light in Sky being just as natural and neutral as each other, with what we currently see in Sky being a result of the balance between them/the ecosystems they make up having been thrown out of wack.

Now, about my original question (I kinda got off topic lmao), I was meaning in terms of melting from staying lit, not from exposure to darkness. While we don't really observe this happening to any candles actually within Sky (at least, not that I'm aware of), it is how candles in real life work. Their "lifespans" (aka, how long they retain their overall shape or there ability to be/remain lit) increasing with how much of there "life" is spent unlit. And you never know what someone's headcanon may be, especially since it could also be the case in the actual world of sky and simply not be reflected in the gameplay by virtue of game mechanics or something.

Still, if I'm understanding you correctly, there's no real danger for them from staying lit or being too close to high concentrations of fire/heat/light, right?

i just covered this in a ramble this morning actually!!! I'll paste what i wrote down below:

I theorize they have stomachs because The Light wanted them to appreciate the wonders of food. i vaguely recall thinking about them using food for sustenance much like humans—so they get the rest of the nutrients they do need from it :] (for the sustenance of their muscles and skin and whatnot. again, like humans) whereas recharging stamina would rely entirely on burning darkplants and candles though. (and also clouds funnily enough <--- landing on clouds recharges you in game)

^ so yeah uhm tldr like. skykids would def have organs of some sort for digestion and nutrients. would light be their primary source of energy? absolutely! but i think it functions like blood in humans to an extent, so they need both nutrients and light to live yk? i had the same stream of thoughts while making the anatomy drawing honestly. ive seen a lot of variations of what skykid innards may look like and while i think having them be Pure Light is whimsical and all, idk. it's not so much fun once you start writing stories about them since they wouldn't need to eat or sleep or. yeah. idk i think they should be very creature coded. sure they breathe on light but cmon. gotta make it snazzy somehow

some other unrelated(?) rambles with skykid diets (and krillkid + hybrid diets because I'm fucking fixated) below the cut.

I've got things brewing and i don't think I've gone on about what my timeline of sky kingdom events are :p so I'll probably do that in the future.

skykid diets can consist of crab and darkplant (darkplants have to be cooked appropriately so the people injesting them don't end up with a sickness like a darkplant infestation) but considering the many different types of sweets and goodies in the game, they also probably discovered what farming is along the way so they can definitely eat more than just that lol. they have so many different ways of preparing crab/darkplant its so silly. its like their staple food.

krillkids have to feed off light creatures, but they're able to have darkplant and crab too on occasion. for hybrids it depends on their dietary needs :] (eating light creatures is seen as a cardinal sin for skykids so they only ever roam wild and free). also i think there are some dish recipes in the vault left over from during the war. so basically many dish variations using crabs, especially since it was when the world was almost plunged into darkness so they couldn't really feed off anything else at the time.

grahhhh I've been diseased by skykid anatomy. I'll probably do a ton of tweaks but idk ive been thinking about it a LOT.

I'll probably reblog this with more art elaborating on skykid anatomy. maybe I'll go into depth on the creatures too!!

rambles below the cut. I'm open to hearing different headcanons! I'm trying to sort things out for lore purposes and idk. its hard having only one brain

so I've seen a ton of different headcanons regarding skykids and their inner workings and it's no secret that skykids have a core where they store all their light, along with wedges along their back for flight. the primary headcanon I've heard about is that skykids are beings made of clay with light as the rest of them, so it's like their soul is encased in a skykid-shaped clay. while that headcanon is cool and all, i wanted to make my skykids closer to human anatomy because human anatomy bangs, and I just need their bones to be breakable for lore purposes ok ? right then.

overall i just think having them keep most organs (maybe having an extra few for the purposes of light, actually) but then having their blood be light instead was my best bet. i didn't want them to be too simple, and. i wanted them to be sturdy. idk. that's just my two cents though, I'm really not great at explaining this stuff in a coherent way </3

i have my own ideas on krillkids but I'll have to do a sketch for them too. meteor technically is a krillkid hybrid but i got lazy and did fullblood skykid anatomy on him sob

(The stand upright. You notice they have a sort of box-like bag on their back. You hear the sound of bottles and bags rustling in it as they stood up. Did they craft it on their own, you wonder.)

"Wel I am lookimg for herbs, but not the kind you might be looking for. Today I'm very, very, VERY lucky though!"

(Then, without warning, they quickly show the mushrooms they were picking. They are just as dark as her skin, with blue spots adorning the heads. They smell so bad that you instinctively use your hand to close your nose. )

"Look at this fine picking! You can only find these growing near darkplants that are budding off season. If you mix it with crab flowers you can get a good cure for fevers."

The purple-clad sky kid, who smelt of flowers and evening dew, curiously looks under their yellow umbrella at Silas crouching over something. Is she- collecting it?

They approach, standing a lil' far from them but still close enough to offer shade from the rain. "Hello."

(They snapped their head at you, much more quicker than you'd think it was posssible. Her reflexes reminded you of a krill in some way. But what made you even more uncomfortable was their face. There was nothing on it, even the eyelashes that maskless kids usually have are gone. Suddenly, she smiles. Sharp pointy teeth glow in the dark, the mushrooms clasped tightly in her hand loosened. Was she collecting mushrooms near the dark plant? Isn't that dangerous? Then she spoke, her voice having a hint of distortion in it)

"My, my, my, my, MY! Hello there traveler! Awful weather we have here, but it's a good day to try out some medicinal herbs! Have you come for treatment?"

(They point towards the treehouse a bit further up in the forest that looks like it was renovated into a clinic. Warm lights spew out from the windows. They don't stop smiling.)
