It is so fucking cool how CS Pacat wrote Will as an unreliable narrator who is often hiding his thoughts from the reader, cutting himself off, leaving us guessing even when we are in his head.

And the reason it works is that it’s not just a handy literary device that creates mystery, it is perfectly in line with the rest of Will’s character. He is in fact sneaky, repressed, and traumatized. There are parts of himself and his past that he’s unable to accept, thoughts and memories that terrify him, that he has to keep locked up. He can’t even enjoy a hug from Violet without feeling guilt. He realizes he might be the Dark King in like chapter 3 but doesn’t allow himself to think/process it till Katherine dies. He knows how many minutes it takes to choke someone to death. Being attracted to James is too Sarcean-like so he tries to not have those thoughts as well, even though it feels like “the sun, or something brighter”

And all these things are for the reader to infer from Will’s actions rather than being told explicitly by the narrative, which forces the reader to actively participate in the storytelling and become more invested.

TlDR: and that’s how cs.pacat fucked me up and ruined me for all other books 😭

A theory about Matthew

So, Matthew’s actions at the beginning of Dark Rise are off. Why would Will’s mother gives her old servant her necklace to give it to the Dark King?

Two theories :

The first one. She doesn’t give it to Matthew so he could give it to the Savior/her child, some ambiguous phrasing that Matthew interpreted wrong. Eleanor wanted him to give the necklace to her daughters, not Will. But Matthew didn’t understand it correctly and when he heard Sinclair was after Will, he gives it to him.

Second theory : Matthew didn’t give Will the necklace. Sinclair used his body to give it to Will. Why? Because he thought he was the last remaining of the blood of the Lady. If Will escape his men, then Sinclair would send him to the Stewards. Why? Because he knows Will can’t do magic. Will would have used it to save his mother. Sinclair knows he still don’t have it after nine months on the run because Will doesn’t use it to save himself when his men attacked him. What does it have to do with the Stewards? Well, it’s just a question of time before Marcus turns and kills everyone in the Hall. Sinclair knows from his experience with James and maybe with himself that it takes time to magic to warm up. Even if the Stewards unlock Will’s magic, it probably wouldn’t be powerful enough to stop Marcus. So by sending Will to the Hall, he kills two birds with one stone. Sinclair giving Will the necklace is a back up plan, if not the main plan to get rid of the blood of Lady.
