[comic review] aliens vs. predator (1989-91)
writer: randy stradley artists: phil norwood & karl story
as the story goes, the first alien vs. predator comics were the result of a brainstorming session between writers and executives at dark horse comics. they were apparently initially discussing doing some sort of crossover with dc comics, and as we’ll see in part 2 of this review that would eventually end up happening. but during the meeting they apparently realized that they could get started with a pretty big crossover between two entities they already owned. it would be simpler to pull off, and more profitable for them if it worked out.
the first alien vs. predators stories appeared as in issues 34-36 of the dark horse presents anthology series in 1989. with the success of this trial balloon, dark horse would move on to give alien vs. predator its own 4-issue miniseries in 1990, with the previously anthologized short story collected as alien vs. predator #0. the last story considered part of this run was another short that appeared in the dark horse presents fifth anniversary special in 1991. collectively, the two short stories acted as a sort of prologue and epilogue to the miniseries.
the story here is understandably quite straightforward, but considering some of the media tie-in comics i’ve slogged through recently (robocop vs. terminator…) i was pleasantly surprised by just how well-executed the whole thing is. i’m on record as a paul w.s. anderson stan and an unironic fan of his avp movie in particular, but i gotta say i actually think the story in this comic makes a lot more sense and i’d love to see a movie somewhat closer to this. (i still want the paul w.s. anderson movie though. i’m greedy.)
i appreciate the setting being alien’s futuristic one rather than predator’s contemporary one. the mechanics of getting the xenomorphs and yautja to fight each other are pretty similar between this and the movie, with the yautja dropping some xenomorph eggs on a world to hunt them for sport. and machiko being adopted by broken tusk–the yautja she befriends–is also echoed in the movie with lex being adopted by scar.
so the broad strokes are similar, it’s mostly just the setting and details that are different. plus the comic was able to be a bit less restrained with huge clashes between multiple xenomorphs and yautja. i’m really glad this crossover is as good as it is, and it’s got me looking forward to further stories set in this continuity.

Ultimate Ship Meme: Thanos and Ebony Maw
~THANMAW~
General:
Rate the Ship - Awful | Ew | No pics pls | I’m not comfortable | Alright | I like it! | Got Pics? | Let’s do it! | Why is this not getting more attention?! | The OTP to rule all other OTPs
How long will they last? - Forever? At least a few hundred thousand years/until they die.
How quickly did/will they fall in love? - Ebony became obsessed with Thanos as soon as Thanos rescued him. Thanos only came to view Ebony in a new light a couple hundred years later, when Ebony accidentally confessed his feelings. Because his mission was already completed, he was free to consider new possibilities such as starting a new family.
How was their first kiss? - Satisfying and intense.
Wedding:
Who proposed? - They’re not technically married, Thanos doesn’t really believe in marriage because it relies upon the idea that there is some higher authority such as a god or a government that you are asking permission to bless your union. In Thanos’s case, there is no higher authority than himself, so instead of a wedding they had a dark ‘ritual’ where Thanos ‘proposed’ by offering Maw a collar of ownership. Maw immediately accepted and so they had a ceremony with a few close people (the rest of the Black Order mostly), and Thanos collared Maw to make it official. It was all very cultish and disturbing, and Thanos acted as the priest/groom/god.
Who is the best man/men? - There wasn’t one.
Who is the braid’s maid(s)? - None.
Who did the most planning? - Thanos did it all.
Who stressed the most? - Probably Ebony, worrying about being and looking perfect for his lord on the big day. But when the ritual actually got started he was too overwhelmed with joy to stress anymore.
How fancy was the ceremony? - Back of a pickup truck | 2 | 3 | 4 | Normal Church Wedding | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | Kate and William wish they were this big.
Who was specifically not invited to the wedding? - Loki
Sex:
Who is on top? - Thanos
Who is the one to instigate things? - Thanos is the one to officially instigate things, but sometimes Ebony will make it fairly obvious when he is horny which would prompt Thanos to instigate.
How healthy is their sex life? - Barely touch themselves let alone each other | 2 | 3 | 4 | Once a couple weeks, nothing overboard | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | They are humping each other on the couch right now
How kinky are they? - Straight missionary with the lights off | 2 | 3 | 4 | Might try some butt stuff and toys | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | Don’t go into the sex dungeon without a horse’s head
How long do they normally last? - Thanos has the endurance to last all night. Ebony has the drive to last all night, but unfortunately not the physical stamina.
Do they make sure each person gets an equal amount of orgasms? - Thanos lasts way longer than Ebony and usually prefers to refrain from orgasming for as long as possible. He gets off on self-control, but wants to make sure he gives Ebony (who orgasms frequently) lots.
How rough are they in bed? - (All of these are true, it varies on mood.)Softer than a butterfly on the back of a bunny | 2 | 3 | 4 | The bed’s shaking and squeaking every time | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | Their dirty talk is so vulgar it’d make Dwayne Johnson blush. Also, the wall’s so weak it could collapse the next time they do it.
How much cuddling/snuggling do they do? - (Depends on if Thanos is busy with work and if they’re in private or not because he doesn’t do PDAs.)No touching after sex | 2 | 3 | 4 | A little spooning at night, or on the couch, but not in public | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | They snuggle and kiss more often than a teen couple on their fifth date to a pillow factory.
Children:
How many children will they have naturally? - Too many to count.
How many children will they adopt? - Thanos adopted one of Ebony’s biological children, Lyss (who is an adult now), from when he was held in captivity as a breeder. One day Thanos went out to search and see if any of the children Maw had given birth to had survived the destruction of his planet, and he ended up locating Lyss and reuniting him with Ebony as a gift to his mate.
Who gets stuck with the most diapers? - Ebony does that kind of stuff usually.
Who is the stricter parent? - Definitely Thanos. He is all tough love.
Who stops the kid(s) from doing dangerous stunts after school? - Ebony is the more worried parent normally. He henpecks about everything because he’s so fussy and particular.
Who remembers to pack the lunch(es)? - Nobody really ‘packs’ lunches, because the children don’t go to a separate school, they are taught at home. But Thanos makes the lunches for everyone, he’s very specific about food in general.
Who is the more loved parent? - Depends on which kid we’re talking about but in general probably Maw because he spends more time bonding and caring for the children while Thanos usually plays the role of ‘bad cop’ disciplinarian when he has to.
Who is more likely to attend the PTA meetings? - There are none.
Who cried the most at graduation? - Again, no traditional graduation.
Who is more likely to bail the child(ren) out of trouble with the law? - Neither. Ebony is more lenient and more likely to let the kids off the hook when they misbehave, but he would never argue with Thanos about any punishment they get from him.
Cooking:
Who does the most cooking? - Thanos. He doesn’t trust anyone with food.
Who is the most picky in their food choice? - Thanos is EXTREMELY picky about his food, hence why he makes it all himself. He tried having cooks before on Sanctuary ll but it…didn’t end up well for them.
Who does the grocery shopping? - They don’t shop, Thanos grows all of his own food in his farm/garden.
How often do they bake desserts? - Rarely. The kids don’t get to eat junk food, but sometimes Thanos has made Maw cupcakes as a gift on birthdays or something.
Are they more of a meat lover or a salad eater? - Thanos doesn’t eat meat. Because of this, Maw also stopped eating meat when he met Thanos.
Who is more likely to surprise the other(s) with an anniversary dinner? - Thanos is the one who does that kind of thing. he doesn’t like surprises for himself, even pleasant ones.
Who is more likely to suggest going out? - They don’t really ‘go out’ to eat.
Who is more likely to burn the house down accidentally while cooking? - Neither. Thanos knows what he is doing and Maw would only be cooking under training/supervision from Thanos.
Chores:
Who cleans the room? - Ebony is more focused on details like this.
Who is really against chores? - Neither.
Who cleans up after the pets? - They don’t really have any ‘pets’. There are animals that live on Thanos’s farm but they are free to wander around. They usually stick around though because they get fed well there. Thanos cleans up after them.
Who is more likely to sweep everything under the rug? - Neither.
Who stresses the most when guests are coming over? - They don’t have many guests but that definitely sounds like an Ebony thing. He’s very anxious about presentation and being judged whereas Thanos knows the guests are way too scared of him to be worth being stressed over.
Who found a dollar between the couch cushions while cleaning? - Neither, they don’t believe in using money.
Misc:
Who takes the longer showers/baths? - Both about equal, and they often do so together anyways.
Who takes the dog out for a walk? - No dog.
How often do they decorate the room/house for the holidays? - They don’t celebrate holidays, so there’s no special decorations that change at different times.
What are their goals for the relationship? - Ebony’s is to serve Thanos in every way and never displease him, and Thanos’s is to maintain a ‘power couple’ relationship and have a ‘queen’ to rule the universe at his side, someone loyal and worthy.
Who is most likely to sleep till noon? - Thanos doesn’t really ever need sleep, and Ebony is usually too busy with the kids to sleep that long. They’re both morning people.
Who plays the most pranks? - Neither. That’s ‘uncle’ Corvus’s job.

Continuing with our wide-ranging survey of creators from every end of the business on what happened and what’s coming. What guilty pleasure (of any kind) are you looking forward to in 2019? Any time taken away from writing. I want to work as much as possible but know you need breaks. I plan on reading more books in the Foundation series. Looking forward to that show.
Who inspired you in 2018? Tony DiGerolamo. The guy is a writing machine and really understands the mechanics of storytelling. More companies should consider hiring him.
Sanika Phawde, Cartoonist
2019 Projects: My biggest project scheduled to be completed in 2019 is my newest graphic novel. The project is still untitled but it presents an autofiction story about the journey of learning to love myself, and learning to accept my body and sexuality, as a freshly adult immigrant in New York city .
The story communicates through mix-media drawings on location, memoir comics, sketchbook pages, illustrated poetry, and even a few instances of fold-out paper architecture.
What guilty pleasure (of any kind) are you looking forward to in 2019? I am really looking forward to going back home to Mumbai after a year, and eating a Nescafe flavoured ice cream sandwich in the winter heat with my best friend, while sitting on the wall that keeps the Arabian sea out of the city.
Who inspired you in 2018? Julian Glander, Jaron Braxton, Veronica Lawlor, Nora Krug, Robert Sikoryak, Brian Rea, Alex Norris, Lizzo, Melissa Guerrero (practices activism through food), Janelle Monae
Christopher Butcher, TCAF Artistic Director & VIZ Media Editorial Consultant
2019 Projects: TCAF 2019 is gearing up and it’s going to have one of the strongest and most diverse guest lists in our history. It’s going to be a pretty amazing year to be there, whether you love kids comics, YA comics, Adult comics, North American or International Comics. We’re pretty hyped!
On the VIZ side of things, though there’s a ton still to be announced, several of the series I’ve had a hand in are starting or continuing into 2019. Look out for the YA LGBTQ series “That Blue Sky Feeling” to get its 2nd and 3rd and final volume next year, the amazing/disturbing BEASTARS will start next year (like if Zootopia were a little more food-chain accurate?), and the recently-debuted gorgeous SF title Ran and The Grey World will start to turn some heads.
What was the biggest story in comics in 2018? That’s tough. The industry is so fragmented at this point, that stories that were huge in one area barely made a ripple in others. Straddling graphic novel publishing, manga publishing, and with a toe still in superhero publishing, it’s amazing the times people would pull me aside and ask “So what was that about, exactly? All I saw was the hashtag…”
So… yeah I dunno. I think the biggest ‘story’ probably wasn’t written, but it was about the continued evolution of this industry as it happened. The house-cleaning and secret-revealing that needed to happen, some of the editorial attitudes around projects looking pretty terrible when exposed to the light of day, the continued vertical integration in licensed properties, all of it points to a maturing industry, which is both good and bad. More professionalism, but less room for the sort of fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants stuff that made comics very, very exciting about 10 years ago.
I think most folks involved will take ‘professionalism’ any day of the week though!
What will be the biggest story in comics in 2019? Pogs, baby! POGS!
No but seriously, I have no idea. There’s so much up in the air right now, 2019 is going to be bumpy for sure.
What guilty pleasure (of any kind) are you looking forward to in 2019? If it’s not hurting anyone, then there’s no point in feeling guilty about pleasure. Enjoy yourselves, it’s tough out there. 🙂
Who inspired you in 2018? My husband, Andrew Woodrow-Butcher, who was enormously patient and supportive while I took risks and traveled around the world, all while working 60 hours a week making sure Canadian schools and libraries have the best comic collections in the world, re-opening the world’s first kids comic book store (Little Island Comics!), sending Canadians to comic festivals around the world, and of course, programming a big part of TCAF. He’s a constant inspiration to me, I’m lucky to have him.
Ben Towle, Cartoonist
2019 Projects: The main project I’ve been working on in 2018 is a non-fiction graphic novel for the new imprint Dead Reckoning, which specializes in comics about things historical and/or military-related.
The book’s called Four Fisted Tales and it’s a collection of real-life stories about animals used in combat.
Here’s a sample page:
And here’s an in-progress rough:
I’m also continuing to work on–albeit a lot more slowly–my book In the Weeds about cooking and playing rock music in the 1990’s. It’s my first foray into the great comics tradition of “funny animals” characters. Here’s an in-progress rough from that:
It probably seems like I’ve disappeared since Oyster War came out a few years back, but I’ve been hard at work on TWO books, I promise!
What was the biggest story in comics in 2018? That’s gotta be the announcement of not one, but TWO, forthcoming books from Raina Telgemeier. When the most highly-read and most popular cartoonist in North America announces a book, it’s a big flippin’ deal. TWO books in the same year is bonkers news.
What will be the biggest story in comics in 2019? OK…Well, it’s only a big story for ME, but I’m really excited about the upcoming D&Q Little Lulu reprint series. These are some of the best comics ever made and it’s going to be great to see them get the D&Q treatment starting in 2019.
What guilty pleasure (of any kind) are you looking forward to in 2019? I’m a huge Star Trek nerd and so I’m super-excited about whatever’s brewing with this new Picard show. Supposedly starting in 2019!
The Beat's Annual Creator Survey Part 4: with art from new projects by Amy Chu, Janet Lee, Roman Muradov, Otto Soglow, Ben Towle and more Continuing with our wide-ranging survey of creators from every end of the business on what happened and what's coming.

Trishica, IronWing, and MattElektra (in a happier world)?
Gonna do this as 3 separate posts. First up, Trishica:
General:
Rate the Ship - Awful | Ew | No pics pls | I’m not comfortable | Alright | I like it! | Got Pics? | Let’s do it! | Why is this not getting more attention?! | The OTP to rule all other OTPs
How long will they last? - Forever. They fall apart sometimes, break up, but it never lasts. They always come back to each other and apologize and work it out
How quickly did/will they fall in love? - They’d crushed on each other for years, kissed in the dark, away from the cameras. But they didn’t really fall in love until Trish turned 18 and they could get out from under Dorothy, be themselves fully
How was their first kiss? - Young, timid, full of worries about if it would mess things up between them, but it felt so right that they forgot about all that
Wedding:
Who proposed? - Jess, because Trish deserved a romantic gesture, and because she knew Trish wanted to change the way they were legally bound together (void the adoption and get legally married), but would never risk scaring Jess off again with a proposal
Who is the best man/men? - Malcolm and Matt are on Jess’ side of the aisle
Who is the braid’s maid(s)? - Trish has Claire and Colleen
Who did the most planning? - It’s a simple ceremony, private, so it didn’t take much planning. Trish did all the necessary planning, making reservations and whatnot
Who stressed the most? - They stressed about equally. Jess dealt with it by staying out late on cases, which made Trish stress because she thought Jess didn’t want this
How fancy was the ceremony? - Back of a pickup truck | 2 | 3 | 4 | Normal Church Wedding | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | Kate and William wish they were this big. - simple and not fancy, but still romantic and special
Who was specifically not invited to the wedding? - Dorothy Walker
Sex:
Who is on top? - lmao, Trish Walker is such a dom
Who is the one to instigate things? - both of them, but Trish moreso
How healthy is their sex life? - Barely touch themselves let alone each other | 2 | 3 | 4 | Once a couple weeks, nothing overboard | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | They are humping each other on the couch right now
How kinky are they? - Straight missionary with the lights off | 2 | 3 | 4 | Might try some butt stuff and toys | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | Don’t go into the sex dungeon without a horse’s head - they’d be kinkier, but Jess’ powers complicate things
How long do they normally last? - unless it’s a quickie when Trish has to run off to work, or they get interrupted by vigilante business, they last for hours. They’ll frequently go most of the night and Trish will insist her assistant have extra coffee ready in the morning
Do they make sure each person gets an equal amount of orgasms? - Trish is more about making sure Jess is having a good time, staying present in what’s going on, and making sure she’s genuinely enjoying what’s happening (as opposed to being told she enjoys it and so therefore her brain being tricked into enjoying it...), but Jess loves giving Trish lots of orgasms
How rough are they in bed? - Softer than a butterfly on the back of a bunny | 2 | 3 | 4 | The bed’s shaking and squeaking every time | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | Their dirty talk is so vulgar it’d make Dwayne Johnson blush. Also, the wall’s so weak it could collapse the next time they do it. - Trish would like it rougher, but, again, super strength
How much cuddling/snuggling do they do? - No touching after sex | 2 | 3 | 4 | A little spooning at night, or on the couch, but not in public | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | They snuggle and kiss more often than a teen couple on their fifth date to a pillow factory. - Jess still avoids, PDA, but she’s succumbed to holding hands when they walk. But they’re super cuddly at night
Children:
How many children will they have naturally? - They both have such messed up pasts, neither of them want children. Trish worries she wouldn’t know how to be a mother, or she’d end up like Dorothy, and Jess doesn’t want to mess up a kid with her baggage
How many children will they adopt? - N/A (though I think Trish might mentor a couple kids, teens she meets who remind her of her or Jess, and they become family in a sense)
Who gets stuck with the most diapers? - N/A
Who is the stricter parent? - N/A
Who stops the kid(s) from doing dangerous stunts after school? - N/A
Who remembers to pack the lunch(es)? - N/A
Who is the more loved parent? - N/A
Who is more likely to attend the PTA meetings? - N/A
Who cried the most at graduation? - N/A
Who is more likely to bail the child(ren) out of trouble with the law? - N/A (though Trish has to bail Jess out a lot)
Cooking:
Who does the most cooking? - Trish, because Jess would live off of coffee, alcohol, and microwavable food if left to her own devices
Who is the most picky in their food choice? - Jess, because she can be now, because there’s no one forcing her to eat (and like) foods
Who does the grocery shopping? - Trish
How often do they bake desserts? - Not super often, but occasionally the mood will strike Trish and Jess will come home to find her with flour on her nose and something delicious smelling in the oven
Are they more of a meat lover or a salad eater? - Trish likes a meaty salad, meahwile Jess just likes meat
Who is more likely to surprise the other(s) with an anniversary dinner? - They are super anti-anniversary dinner, but they do some other sort of date that’s fun and silly - often laser tag or minigolf or skydiving, something adventurous and distracting
Who is more likely to suggest going out? - Trish, she’s the one with money and connections all over town
Who is more likely to burn the house down accidently while cooking? - Jess
Chores:
Who cleans the room? - Trish
Who is really against chores? - Jess
Who cleans up after the pets? - Trish
Who is more likely to sweep everything under the rug? - Jess, when forced to clean
Who stresses the most when guests are coming over? - Trish
Who found a dollar between the couch cushions while cleaning? - Jess
Misc:
Who takes the longer showers/baths? - Jess
Who takes the dog out for a walk? - Usually Trish
How often do they decorate the room/house for the holidays? - They don’t do much decorating, but Trish would put up a couple decorations in the apartment, and usually a couple in her studio as well
What are their goals for the relationship? - To heal together. To be there for each other and save each other, but also to learn to step back and let them save themselves, to be their own people and their own heroes but to learn to be a team
Who is most likely to sleep till noon? - Jess, frequently
Who plays the most pranks? - Jess

Sin City
Sin City is a series of neo-noir comics by American comic book writer Frank Miller. The first story originally appeared in "Dark Horse Presents Fifth Anniversary Special. The intertwining stories, with frequently recurring characters, take place in Basin City. With the art style of the comic being almost fully in negative, with black taking the foreground as the main colour, with some other bright colours sometimes shown for strong effects or characters. I toyed around with t6he idea of a mostly negative style comic with my negative ink prints but ultimately decided against it. As I need to first built up a concrete drawing style and then branching out to other forms of experimentation.
