okay im doing it im organising (lying) my thoughts. witch house live from the witch house guy
it was Not witch house. there were some dreams in a witch house for sure but essentially all elements of lovecraft had been subtracted from it in its entirety. that’s okay, it was still fun, but it wasn’t witch house. there was a little bit of mathematics and discussions about another dimension but treated very much in the “otherworld” way. it wouldve been extremely cool to have this otherworld be an actual mathematical dimension in reality, but it’s only hinted at for the audience and the characters understand it as a limbo world. nice little bit of lovecraft underlying the whole thing you know? choosing to call it frank elwood has a terrible time to distinguish, courtesy of nik
the ghosts? i have very mixed feelings about them. my idea of ghosts and haunting is very specific and WAY more detached than the ghosts here. grief and the inability to move on was super cool, grief is one of the main things involved in my witch house, but i think it could’ve been done a little better? epperly is a little too human. siblings is fun and i really love exploring that dynamic, and as a motivation....after thinking about it a bit i think it can work, i think that a mythos story driven by that overwhelming love rather than knowledge could be neat. walter was still a little bit of a freak so i give the siblings thing a pass. i NEED a witch house adaptation where he is so fucked up though. the movie is in my head i swear and he gets Worse as he gets less sleep and falls deeper into that obsession. elwood mentions in the text that there’s incidents with other students and i want to see that side of walter. the greying with stress was there though which win! sidetracked anyways
keziah my love. your design was so cool. it almost seemed a little out of place sometimes? but it was still so awesome. and fucking irish brown jenkin. help me
the house was cool but a bit lackluster becuase. no angles :( which kind of defeats the purpose of it being in the title of the thing to me. however the sore on the ceiling? ohh. ohhhhhh. the house has leprosy. this house is alive. and i wish they’d done something a little more with that.
WIN OF FRANK! WIN OF FRANK! WIN OF FRANK! he was so. auauauua. theres no words here im just rotating him sorry. both frank has an awful time and original witch house are set up so well for the cycle to continue through him (walter wants epperly back, frank wants walter back) & that’s another important thing to me about witch house. the cycles
they got addiction and obsession! they got it! not in the way that i envisioned and not to the extreme that i envisioned but they have the themes that howie was sleeping on and i appreciate that
also win of trans metaphor <3 transes your walter. irishes him too actually!
im sure ill think of something more to say. but for now it boils down to that wasnt witch house but it was fun and i will watch it again because content! i went in going “well whatever it is its going to be more lovecraft than stuart gordon’s” and then i was wrong which was a lil disappointing but i still had a fun time even if i was going “what the hell is going on” sometimes. i will be honest having elwood makes up for a lot of sins <3  blorbo from my short story finally has a screen iteration

THEME: Rootin', Tootin' and Shootin
Today's games are Wild-West-flavoured TTRPGs, complete with desert cacti, Smith & Wesson revolvers, and Cowboy Hats.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Weird Weird West, by Tom G.
A weird western TTRPG about cowboy monster hunters.
This is a Powered by the Apocalypse game with a little bit of Forged in the Dark, so expect an emphasis on narrative, with pieces of the book to set up the tone of the game - without a section that gives you specific pieces of lore. It follows much of the conventions of PbtA games, including the expectation that you play to find out what happens - but there's also some add-ons, such as inventory, special tracks for harm, and a weird power that you get when you choose your playbook.
There are two options for Weird Weird West: a free option, which should get you everything you really need to play the game, and a paid option. For $8, you get extra content, character art, and fully-coloured playbooks.
18XX Outlaw, by Deep Light Games.
AT THE OLD WEST, YOU CAN'T BE PICKY: law is corrupt when not far between. Most riches are with the rich people and tend to keep going there. So I guess it’s only natural someone brings some balance to it, right? And the Lord is my witness that there sure are many pals available for that.
You are free people doing what you need to survive at this weird heated place. Some authorities call you gunslingers, mercenaries, robbers, killers. Others call you bounty hunters, bodyguards, vigilantes. But that is their opinion. The real question now is: which job are you fancying, next?
18XX Outlaw is a 24XX micro-game, so it is a quick read, easy to pick up, and requires little prep. The missions can be put together using roll-tables, and if your character dies it's pretty easy to make a new one. Perhaps not the best game for long, drawn-out play, but if you just want something quick and in the genre, this game might be worth looking at. It's also only $3!
Dread Revolver, by kay w.
Welcome to an almost-eternal nightmare trek through a post-post-apocalyptic wasteland, pushed onwards in the face of near-certain death.
It is a fantasy Western nightmare after the second end of the world, where your Revolver binds you to vile existence no matter how many times you fall, until you earn your Doom.
It is loaded with one bullet and one ending.
This game is based on Charge and Blades in the Dark, but unlike the tendency for these kinds of games to operate in the theatre of the mind, it provides a hexcrawl for a sample adventure, called Thousand Damned Deep. This is likely a darker game than some of the other ones on this list, with an expectation that the players won't necessarily get out of this alive. I'd pick up this game for a group who wants to explore some heavier themes, or at least who aren't afraid to kill off their characters at some point.
Knights of the Road, by bordercholly.
The Western States have entered an age of wonders. Technological innovations transform the lives of her people. Automobiles connect vast distances over glistening highways. Radio waves carry new voices, thoughts, and art to ears around the nation. Neon lights hold back the night on the shoulders of massive dams. And the train—ceaseless, thundering, unrelenting—powers it all; pumping food, material, and people through the veins of this great extractive beast.
But these new wonders have not brought blessings to everyone. With the Federal Government in the pocket of powerful Robber Barons and Vampires; the poor, and the land itself, are dispossessed and exploited. In The Western States, many stow away on the freight trains in search of paying work.
And then there are the monsters.
Knights of the Road has you playing monster-hunters on a train in the 1920's, protecting folks the government doesn't bother about, working for whoever will give you a meal. Character creation is pretty simple, and the rules require at least 2d20's for your basic rolls. You'll also need other dice for roll tables, damage dice, etc.
There are some mechanics that require you to keep track of your gear, as well as special rules for Hired Hands and vehicle combat. This game also comes with multiple pdfs - for players and GMs, as well as a map and a bestiary of sorts. Quite a lot for only $5!
Drifters, by Spencer Campbell of GilaRPGs.
The wastes call. Not to you, but the iron hanging on your hip.
Drifters is a tabletop RPG of cursed gunslingers, wandering the wastes of the frontier in search of problems, and purpose.
Carrying a capital-G Gun, you have been granted near immortality. It only costs everything in return.
Drifters is a hack of the Slayers RPG, also by Spencer Campbell, which means that it imports the Slayers style of play by giving the player asymmetric playbooks: your experience of the game will be different depending on the kind of playbook you take. It's not a carbon copy however - there's new Patrol mechanics that help you slowly chip away at a corrupting threat.
The book itself looks gorgeous, and beautifully laid-out.This game has both a pdf and a print version, so if you prefer physical books, that option is there for you.
The Great Soul Train Robbery, by Cloven Pine Games.
On the road to hell there was a railway line. An express train to the infernal city of Dis, crewed by furies and carrying treasure and souls to damnation. You’re going to rob it.
Spin an allegorical Weird Western yarn as your sharpshooters, fiddlers, homesteader widows, and other Desperados attempt a Hellish train heist. Will you claim your prize from the train, or be overcome, damned, or broken by the heist?
This game uses a simple system based on Rowan, Rook, & Decard's Honey Heist. Your Desperados are a motley crew with mixed motives, so they all have two stats: Lover and Sinner. Use one to make human connections and perform selfless acts, and the other to do dirty deeds and brutal acts.
The Great Soul Train Robbery actually has multiple formats: a zine pdf, a two page edition, and a print version. With the full version, you get more detailed character options that you normally do in a Honey Heist game. It also has significantly more GM advice than a regular Honey Heist game, which might be a good resource for newer GMs.
Fistful of Darkness, by monkeyecho.
Imagine a world with the magic and mystery of the frontier: wide open plains of the Old Wild West in all its beauty and madness, where violence and sacrifice dominate every single day. Now add the Hellstone rush, underground mayhem in mines and brand new sciences & machines. Don’t forget immigration, injustice, vigilante justice, outlaws, gunslingers, slick talkers and setting suns. This all in the face of an impending doom: Demons and the four riders bringing the end of the world as you know it. How do you make it to the top of this powder keg, which side will you take in the impending war and how much will your soul suffer?
A Fistful of Darkness is a Weird West Fantasy hack of Blades in the Dark with heavy emphasis on the fantasy part. It’s not intended to be an accurate history lesson or a simulation of past times. It is designed to be a cinematic game which lets you play all those Weird West tropes towards the end of the world.
A Fistful of Darkness is not a complete game. It’s a hack for Blades in the Dark by John Harper, and therefore needs the Blades book in order to play. If you like the streamlined action and simple dice system of Forged in the Dark games, you're likely to love A Fistful of Darkness, with its rich setting and intriguing playbooks. A solid find.

(A snowman comes to life in Ford Television Theatre, top, a machine that records every sound in history on Tales of Tomorrow, bottom left, and Grandpa explains why the world has gone to pot because not everyone is a real Christian like he is, from This is the Life, bottom right.)
Day 90- TV and Radio:
TV:
This is the Life, “The Greatest Gift,” late December, 1952.
The Ford Television Theatre, season 1, episode 13, “Heart of Gold,” December 26th, 1952.
Tales of Tomorrow, season 2, episode 13, “The Bitter Storm,” December 26th, 1952.
The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, season 1, episode 13, “Late Christmas Gift,” December 26th, 1952.
Radio:
This is Your FBI, episode 404, “The Sunshine Syndicate,” December 26th, 1952.
Space Patrol, “Last Voyage of the Lonesome Lena,” December 27th, 1952.
Bergen and McCarthy, “Rosemary Clooney at Camp Pendleton,” December 28th, 1952.
The Chase, “No Contact,” December 28th, 1952.
This is the Life was a religious show made by Lutherans. I thought it might be interesting (and scary?) to watch a religious show from 1952. This was a Christmas episode, and at first I was actually somewhat impressed with it. It was mostly the birth story of Jesus, but it wasn’t told in a pompous or overly sanctimonious way. That is, until the end. Then the narrator/Grandpa decided to chastise us all for not focusing on Jesus enough over the holidays. He almost verbatim said, “If everyone else were as good of a Christian as me, the world would be a most wonderful place indeed!” Blech.
The Ford Television Theatre was a Christmas special that was cute at times. It was also the kind of Christmas show the judgey Grandpa above would have hated. It was all about Santa and a snowman and the idea of letting children make-believe and be creative. Two kids built a snowman that came to life, and he taught them to embrace their imagination. The snowman looked a little creepy, but the actor who played him was the loveable Edmund Gwenn, who was Santa in Miracle on 34th Street!
Tales of Tomorrow was so frustrating! It’s been one of my favorite shows of 1952, but it really jumped the shark here. A cynical untrusting man invents a machine that can pick up soundwaves from anything and anywhere, including the past. Well, it’s Christmas time, right? What does it mean when he and his family start hearing people speaking Aramaic in a crowd from about 2000 years ago? Yeah, I knew it was coming long before the cards were played, and it was just as horrible as I feared.
I’ll quickly also say a word about The Chase. I listened to the final episode from 1952 today. It’s been one of my favorite shows, and I know I will listen to more episodes once this project ends. One of my favorite memories of the last 90 days was listening to the episode “Long Distance.” It was hands down the best episode of radio in the whole project- over 200 episodes!
...And now a word from today’s best sponsor: Masland Beauti-blend Broadloom carpets! Wouldn’t you love to add luxurious carpeting to your living room? Something of exceptional luscious color that you're just going to rip up in a couple of decades to replace with pea green and baby food gold when you put wood paneling on your walls? Well, we’ve got a perfect place for you to see our carpets- black and white television! See our gorgeous light grey! Or our beautiful darkish grey! Or our dark black that could be red for all you know! And you must see our new lightish medium grey with darkish medium grey accents! Visit your local Masland dealer tomorrow!

Reviving one of my many Tumblr blogs. Since this one is devoted to cosmic horror intruding into the real world, seems like a good place to talk about The H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society's excellent Dark Adventure Radio Theatre episode "The White Tree - a tale of Inspector Legrasse." Although many of the DART episodes take liberties with the original source material in order to surprise readers of the original works, this is their first wholly original work. Other than the protagonist himself, whom readers will recall is the narrator of the middle chapter of Lovecraft's The Call of Cthulhu, this work is completely that of the HPLHS' Sean Branney.
I don't want to spoil anything, so I will simply quote their own synopsis. "In Dark Adventure Radio Theatre's first wholly original episode, Inspector Legrasse stumbles onto a case which may be connected to the Cthulhu cult he and his men broke up nearly twenty years before. Once again he leads an investigation which takes him into the foreboding bayous of Louisiana. Will he again be pitted against deranged cultists and the abominations they worship, or has he found something even more evil and insidious?"
I loved this episode, which went in directions I certainly did not expect. I recommend it highly.

Hi!! Could I have a male Stranger Things ship pls? Thank you so much in advance! 💖
✓ Personality: Feisty & compassionate. I try to always be friendly & warm until given a reason not to be— then I’m a total hellcat lol bc I’m v protective of those I care about. I have a pretty snarky sense of humor which is pretty much a reflex for me at this point lol. I’m an open book & I try to be honest abt everything but still remain tactful (you catch more flies w/ honey, after all). I can be cynical sometimes but it’s just a defense mechanism so I don’t get hurt. It takes me a bit to trust but when I do, you become family to me. Don't be fooled by the sweet Valley Girl accent; I cuss like a sailor. 😆 I come off as bubbly & social but I'm actually super introverted & usually end up retreating eventually to recharge. I'm a complete night owl too lol. I desperately want a break from the monotony of everyday life & I crave adventure, romance, & new experiences. I'm generally a v intense/sensitive person, very all or nothing lol. Life isn't worth living without passion imo.
✓ Looks: I’m a 23 year old mixed race Latina w/ long dark brown hair, dark brown eyes, pale olive skin w/ a light dusting of freckles across my nose, cheeks, & forehead. My nails are always painted bc I tend to bite them otherwise (anxiety & PTSD thing). My face tag is "Merp"! I have a v naturally curvy hourglass figure & I love dressing to accentuate it, but people always underestimate me bc of it.
My friends say that I'm the personification of the Subversive Bimbo trope (like Ty Lee from "Avatar", Cher from “Clueless”, Elle from "Legally Blonde", Daphne from "Scooby Doo", Rachel from "Animorphs" etc) bc ppl see me & assume I'm a ditz bc of the way I look & the way my voice sounds (I have a Valley Girl accent 😬) but I'm actually very capable & use their underestimation to my advantage. Ppl think they know me but I’m way more than a pretty face & curves; most ppl just don’t care to look any deeper. 😕
✓ Romance: I’m a hopeless romantic who’s a sucker for romantic gestures & loves PDA; I love when my S/O is proud to be w/ me & honestly, I love romance in general. Shakespeare’s “Romeo & Juliet” is my favorite play bc of the enduring love against all odds depicted in it. I’ve survived several abusive relationships which unfortunately left me with severe PTSD— but despite being more guarded, I still look for the good in ppl, no matter what.
A lot of guys have superficial interest in me for the way I look but I want a true, undying, wholly-dedicated fairytale love not just a passing fling. I'd trade being "the Babe of Hawkins High" for the love of one person w/o a second thought. When I fall, I fall really hard. I love that instant chemistry when you have a real connection w/ someone special. I want someone strong enough to protect me but also, someone who I can protect. We could protect each other! 🥰 My goal in the future is to find the love of my life, get married & have a family w/ them, our kids, a house full of pets, a life full of romantic adventures, the whole 9 yards.
A date to me can be anything from going on random drives w/o a destination (just adventuring w/ the radio playing 🥰) to a dinner date at a nice restaurant or staying in w/ some takeout & a good movie. Being w/ the person I love is the best part to me.
Tho I’m secretly dying of nervousness on the inside, I apparently seem v confident w/ guys? I’ve tried to wingman for my friends before bc I’m not afraid to introduce myself or slip someone a phone number, but the guys just become interested in me instead & I feel RLLY bad abt that so I usually just stick to giving my friends advice instead 😅
When I'm dating someone, we tend to go at it like rabbits, if you know what I mean lol. I have a v high drive & I love the intoxicating passion + connection that comes w/ so we tend to have difficulty keeping our hands off each other. 🤭
✓ Interests: Singing, listening to music, musical theatre, astrology, literature (especially Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet 🥰), pretty aesthetics, getting my nails done, cuddles, petting animals, staying up late watching psych/true crime documentaries or stand-up, writing, going on drives, shopping/thrift shopping, anything that helps me escape.
✓ Strengths: I’m RLLY good w/ animals, like freakishly good. Animals of all kinds, wild & tame, just seem to gravitate towards me; my friends call it "the Disney Princess Effect'' 🙈
Intuitive nature— I’ve been told I have a gentle, healing aura. Random ppl just seem to just open up to me for some reason & I’m good at telling when ppl are hiding smth.
My intelligence & stubbornness make a great pair bc when I’m convinced of smth, I will fight till the end for it, even if nobody else believes in what I’m fighting for.
Self-preservation— my PTSD keeps me on edge a lot but on the bright side, it means I’m primed for survival. Those instincts keep me & those I care abt out of harm’s way.
Charm— I can generally talk my way out of trouble pretty well.
Healing Factor— I heal crazy fast which is nice lol & would be super helpful in the Stranger Things universe lol. My friends joke that I’m a lesser-known, missing member of The X-Men 😆
My protectiveness— I can go 0 to 100 real quick if it's on behalf of someone or smth I care abt, but I also know when it’s smartest to just let it go & get them back for it later.
✓ Weaknesses: My loyalty— My S/O is my Achilles Heel; I would do anything for them, go to Hell & back in a heartbeat, no matter the cost. I apologize to bugs I have to kill but I would rip someone to shreds w/ no mercy if they laid a hand on my S/O.
Iced coffee— I don’t smoke weed or drink alcohol anymore but I’m a major caffeine addict & I need my iced coffee every day or I stg, it’s like my Personal Battery dies.
Body image & self-confidence— I come off confident but I’ve actually always been super insecure abt the way I look; I’ve just gotten better at hiding it. I tend to be my own worst critic.
My anger— I am smol but I will fight. Some ppl get calm & cold when they’re angry; I burn hot, especially when it’s smth I care abt & sometimes, that clouds my judgment.
I tend to be jumpy bc of my PTSD & anxiety so my S/O would need to be someone able to handle that. I do better when I have someone to hold my hand & reassure me. 🥰
✓ Weapon: In the Stranger Things universe, my weapon would probably be a Ka-Bar: an all-purpose hunting knife that can also work in combat or survival settings. You just never know when it might come in handy & I feel best when I’m prepared.
✓ Miscellaneous: I'm an INFP, double Capricorn w/ a Libra Ascendant, enneagram 6w5, & a Slytherdor whose Patronus is a swan bc although ppl seem to highly value my appearance, the depth of my love is what I'm most proud of & I can become fearsome if the ones I love are threatened. 🦢
Thank you so much again!! 💖

Another interesting article from the Irish DM.
THE WOMAN WHO FINALLY TAMED POLDARK
By Maeve Quigley
Heartthrob Aidan Turner has a track record of dating co-stars and it seems like he’s finally found his leading lady as it’s revealed he and Caitlin Fitzgerald have tied the knot
THEY were the pictures that broke the hearts of thousands of fans — the dark-haired actor affectionately smooching his new wife on the romantic streets of Rome, as their wedding rings flashed in the warm Italian dusk. After three years of dating, Aidan Turner tied the knot with fellow thespian Caitlin Fitzgerald in a secret ceremony in the Italian capital last summer, although news of the nuptials has just broken.
The pair met on the set of adventure film The Man Who Killed Hitler And Then The Bigfoot and it seems — despite Turner’s previous protestations that he would never date another actress — they couldn’t help falling for each other.
Pictures taken on August 8 show the newlyweds days after tying the knot as they flashed their gold bands while enjoying a romantic al fresco dinner date at Pierluigi’s restaurant in Rome.
In the newly-released images, the loved-up pair seem unable to keep their hands off each other as they sip their drinks, holding on to one another as they gaze into each other’s eyes.
It is believed Fitzgerald also came to Ireland before the pandemic to meet Turner’s extended family — possibly ahead of their big day. Of course, she’s not the first woman with beauty and talent to be seen on the arm of the dashing Dubliner.
But at 37, the man whose shirtless scything in BBC drama Poldark had women everywhere a-quiver is now officially off the market.
Turner was born in Clondalkin, the son of Eileen, an accountant, and Pat, an electrician. He is the youngest of two boys; his brother works for the Revenue.
The family later moved to Walkinstown where growing up he was quite shy so his mum sent him to ballroom dancing classes as she felt it would help him no matter what career he chose. He became quite the champion and could possibly have been headed for an international career before he got bitten by the acting bug when he attended the Gaiety School of Acting, where he dated classmate India Whisker for a short time.
Even then, Turner’s dashing good looks were getting him noticed off stage.
To supplement his acting career, he got a job as a barman in famous Dublin nightclub Lillie’s Bordello, where he proved to be a big hit with the VIP guests
‘Women would come in just to stare at him,’ said former hostess now wellness guru and television presenter Andrea Hayes, who gave the acting student his position behind the bar. ‘I’m not joking.’
His first big acting break came when he landed the part of receptionist Ruairi MacGowan in RTE’s long-running medical drama The Clinic, taking the seat left vacant by another major success story, Chris O’Dowd, who also played a medical administrator on the show.
Around this time he was dating Charlene McKenna. The thenaspiring acting stars were together from 2007 to 2009 and shared a flat together in London before their relationship ended just weeks after McKenna had said in an interview how happy she was.
McKenna has recently got married in secret herself, to actor Adam Rothenburg, with whom she starred in Ripper Street, although she has said she still has a friendship with Turner.
‘He’s flying and I’m so proud of him,’ she said of Turner in a 2016 interview. ‘We still keep in touch and I knew he would do this well for himself. I always told him he would be a movie star.’
While they lived together, Turner landed his breakthrough role as tortured vampire Mitchell in the BBC Three hit Being Human.
Mitchell was torn between his blood lust and doing the right thing and was keen on leather trousers and coats, allowing Turner to smoulder on screen for the first but certainly not the last time.
He managed to gain a cult following from the role — as well as a new girlfriend in the form of his co-star Lenora Critchlow who played a ghost to Turner’s vampire.
When their relationship ended, Turner also chose to quit his role on the show.
But it was Being Human that got him his role in The Hobbit after director Peter Jackson saw him in the show and was struck by his elfin features. He never made it to the elves though, instead playing a dwarf.
And as his star ascended, he began dating another actress, this time Cork-born Sarah Greene. They had been friends for a few years after meeting on the set of Titus Andronicus, directed by Selina Cartmell at Dublin’s Project Arts Centre; but love didn’t blossom until much later.
‘I played Demetrius, her character wasn’t a named character but we met on that,’ Turner said in a magazine interview. ‘It was all very platonic and we never hooked up or anything, but that’s how we got to know each other. Then years later we just met again and it just sort of took off.’
Turner and Greene became the golden couple of the Irish drama scene, both with careers on the rise. They were together when he landed the role of Ross Poldark in the BBC revival of the Cornish drama that became a huge international success.
The fame that came with the role was difficult for both to handle as Turner is not a fan of being seen as a celebrity while Greene hated people taking photographs of her boyfriend while they went about their daily business.
Though then happy in his relationship with Greene, Turner admitted that he had been heartbroken in the past and it was something he was able to channel into his role as the brooding Ross Poldark, a man torn between two women.
‘I don’t know anyone on this planet who hasn’t had their heart broken,’ he told the Radio Times. ‘It’s happened to me. Love is love it’s the purest and rawest thing we have in life.’
As their careers progressed, the couple spent more time apart as Turner was in New Zealand with The Hobbit while Greene was working on projects like Vikings closer to home. But he insisted the distance wasn’t a problem.
‘You meet someone, you fall in love, then you can only see them over Skype or phone calls or texts and emails. And you have this whole other side to your relationship and it’s... it was fun,’ he said in a 2015 interview. He added: ‘We knew we really wanted to be together. And knew if we could do that, we could tackle a lot more. It was never: God, this is hard, bloody hell, we need to review this. This sucks. We never questioned it; it was great. So we had that from the beginning...’
But as the Poldark mania went into overdrive, so did the rumour mill and there were false reports of an engagement and even a secret wedding between himself and Greene. In actual fact the opposite was the case, with the relationship ending in 2015, five years after it started.
Turner then seemed to swear off dating those in the same business, despite his track record. In a press conference for the fourth series of Poldark, he said dating in acting circles meant you could never get away from work, admitting: ‘If you’re in my business and you find somebody who does exactly what you do and you’re living with them, then you’re in the business all the time.
‘You go home, talk about casting directors, you talk about the press, you talk about the next job you’re doing — it can become quite dull and taxing,’ he added.
So instead he was linked to a mystery law graduate, an advertising executive and then the artist Nettie Wakefield, who he dated for around a year before their hectic schedules drove them apart in what was described as an amicable split.
But obviously when he met the stunning blonde Irish-American, Caitlin Fitzgerald, 38, on a film set three years ago, Turner’s new rules went out the window, so bowled over was he by the beauty and talent of his co-star. By the time the film was premiered, the pair already looked smitten, posing on the red carpet together.
Fitzgerald appeared at a concert with Michael Sheen, with whom she starred in Masters of Sex but was seeing Turner at that time and like him, is an intensely private person.
Despite his fame and the stir his bare-chested scything caused, Turner has never been one to chase the celebrity lifestyle — perhaps because of those nights he spent observing celebrities while working behind the bar in Lillie’s.
‘If I allowed myself to let it change my life, it could,’ he has said in the past of his fame. ‘Where there’s celebrity, it’s easy to slip into that — being followed in nightclubs, or dating famous people or getting adverts. I’m just not interested in that stuff.
‘I want to do good work with good actors and filmmakers, read interesting scripts. I didn’t get into this business for celebrity. I did it for my love of film and stories and theatre.’
So although it has now been widely reported that he and Fitzgerald tied the knot in front of his parents Eileen and Pat, neither of them are likely to confirm their nuptials at any stage in the near future.
In fact, the only kissing Turner is likely to talk about is for his role in the film Leonardo, which explores the life and sexuality of Leonardo Da Vinci. In the film we will see Turner as the renaissance artist in a passionate clinch with another man as it explores Da Vinci’s sexuality and his rumoured affair with his apprentice Gian Giacomo Caprotti, better known by his nickname Salai. It is for his art that Turner intends to keep us all guessing as he’d rather we were interested in his roles than his romances.
‘It’s important to me that people don’t know too much about me because I’m trying to play characters,’ he has said in the past
‘Sometimes you see actors who are really good, but you have trouble separating that actor from the celebrity profile.
‘I don’t want to be one of those guys. It helps that people don’t know a lot about me, I guess.’
