Howdy Boss!
I saw a recent post about Weird Tales, and the Cth mythos. Which made me curious, have you ever heard of DART - Dark Adventure Radio Theatre? (https://store.hplhs.org/collections/dark-adventure-radio-theatre)
Its adaptions of a lot of the older works, done in the 30-50s style radio seriels, with adverts, voice casts, sound effects etc. Its been a lot of fun and an interesting throwback to older style
I hadn't heard of them, but I have now! :->
(Also noting, with interest, that -re spelling rather than the more usual US -er.)
Here's a trailer for one of them, "The Thing on the Doorstep".
youtube
TBH I'm not surprised to see it's a part of the H.P. Lovecraft Historial Society - they've made a couple of Cthulhu movies In Period Style which have been very well received.
Indeed, it was our friend Donal and his father who translated the title cards for the first one, a silent-era recreation of "The Call of Cthulhu", into Irish.
For a completely different view of this author and his stories, here's Overly Sarcastic Productions:

The Christmas Dress
So, the world has gone to shit.
Usually when horrendous events happen I feel the need to make something with my hands, and these interesting times we find ourselves in are no exception. I’ve been wanting to make Mood Sewciety’s Anthea Milkmaid Dress for quite a while now, but never quite got around to it—until now. I was browsing Instagram to see what this dress looked like on people who weren’t professional models for Mood, and found this:
I was instantly inspired to make a red and green Christmas-themed dress. I already had 4 yards of red flannel from Joann Fabrics, and decided to get another 4 yards of green flannel from the same retailer since it was on sale. I completely forgot to add a 24-inch invisible zipper to my online cart, so I’ll have to go get that later… probably after I get my next paycheck, since I currently only have 26 USD in my checking account after my ill-advised sewing supplies mini-binge.
Now, I have no idea if it’s a good idea to make a dress out of flannel. It probably isn’t (and I’ll report back with any lessons learned at the end of this misadventure), but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. I’ve sewn about 60% of the bodice, which you can see here:
and now… well, now we’re waiting for the green flannel to arrive, since I can’t do anything else until then.

(A snowman comes to life in Ford Television Theatre, top, a machine that records every sound in history on Tales of Tomorrow, bottom left, and Grandpa explains why the world has gone to pot because not everyone is a real Christian like he is, from This is the Life, bottom right.)
Day 90- TV and Radio:
TV:
This is the Life, “The Greatest Gift,” late December, 1952.
The Ford Television Theatre, season 1, episode 13, “Heart of Gold,” December 26th, 1952.
Tales of Tomorrow, season 2, episode 13, “The Bitter Storm,” December 26th, 1952.
The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, season 1, episode 13, “Late Christmas Gift,” December 26th, 1952.
Radio:
This is Your FBI, episode 404, “The Sunshine Syndicate,” December 26th, 1952.
Space Patrol, “Last Voyage of the Lonesome Lena,” December 27th, 1952.
Bergen and McCarthy, “Rosemary Clooney at Camp Pendleton,” December 28th, 1952.
The Chase, “No Contact,” December 28th, 1952.
This is the Life was a religious show made by Lutherans. I thought it might be interesting (and scary?) to watch a religious show from 1952. This was a Christmas episode, and at first I was actually somewhat impressed with it. It was mostly the birth story of Jesus, but it wasn’t told in a pompous or overly sanctimonious way. That is, until the end. Then the narrator/Grandpa decided to chastise us all for not focusing on Jesus enough over the holidays. He almost verbatim said, “If everyone else were as good of a Christian as me, the world would be a most wonderful place indeed!” Blech.
The Ford Television Theatre was a Christmas special that was cute at times. It was also the kind of Christmas show the judgey Grandpa above would have hated. It was all about Santa and a snowman and the idea of letting children make-believe and be creative. Two kids built a snowman that came to life, and he taught them to embrace their imagination. The snowman looked a little creepy, but the actor who played him was the loveable Edmund Gwenn, who was Santa in Miracle on 34th Street!
Tales of Tomorrow was so frustrating! It’s been one of my favorite shows of 1952, but it really jumped the shark here. A cynical untrusting man invents a machine that can pick up soundwaves from anything and anywhere, including the past. Well, it’s Christmas time, right? What does it mean when he and his family start hearing people speaking Aramaic in a crowd from about 2000 years ago? Yeah, I knew it was coming long before the cards were played, and it was just as horrible as I feared.
I’ll quickly also say a word about The Chase. I listened to the final episode from 1952 today. It’s been one of my favorite shows, and I know I will listen to more episodes once this project ends. One of my favorite memories of the last 90 days was listening to the episode “Long Distance.” It was hands down the best episode of radio in the whole project- over 200 episodes!
...And now a word from today’s best sponsor: Masland Beauti-blend Broadloom carpets! Wouldn’t you love to add luxurious carpeting to your living room? Something of exceptional luscious color that you're just going to rip up in a couple of decades to replace with pea green and baby food gold when you put wood paneling on your walls? Well, we’ve got a perfect place for you to see our carpets- black and white television! See our gorgeous light grey! Or our beautiful darkish grey! Or our dark black that could be red for all you know! And you must see our new lightish medium grey with darkish medium grey accents! Visit your local Masland dealer tomorrow!

Reviving one of my many Tumblr blogs. Since this one is devoted to cosmic horror intruding into the real world, seems like a good place to talk about The H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society's excellent Dark Adventure Radio Theatre episode "The White Tree - a tale of Inspector Legrasse." Although many of the DART episodes take liberties with the original source material in order to surprise readers of the original works, this is their first wholly original work. Other than the protagonist himself, whom readers will recall is the narrator of the middle chapter of Lovecraft's The Call of Cthulhu, this work is completely that of the HPLHS' Sean Branney.
I don't want to spoil anything, so I will simply quote their own synopsis. "In Dark Adventure Radio Theatre's first wholly original episode, Inspector Legrasse stumbles onto a case which may be connected to the Cthulhu cult he and his men broke up nearly twenty years before. Once again he leads an investigation which takes him into the foreboding bayous of Louisiana. Will he again be pitted against deranged cultists and the abominations they worship, or has he found something even more evil and insidious?"
I loved this episode, which went in directions I certainly did not expect. I recommend it highly.

I had to write a paper on Herbert West Reanimator publications vs 1985 Stuart Gordon Film, and I had to restrain myself from calling out the racism of the publications and the sexism/misogyny of the film.

Yeah…
Warning, “The Rats in the Walls” constantly throws the n slur around because the eldest cat in the story was named after Lovecraft’s childhood cat. It was renamed to a slightly less racist name in certain publications, and the Dark Adventure Radio Theatre adaptation renamed the cat to “Pluto.” There’s a couple other stories that just throw the word around. This also goes for collaboration stories he wrote with other writers. Lovecraft’s shorty views are hard to separate from his work. Especially when it’s so ingrained. (Ex: “The Shadow Over Innsmouth” is the result of Lovecraft having a crisis in finding out he had some Welsh ancestry and freaked out that he wasn’t white enough. The fear of the story is that people were mating with deep ones.)
The least racist story is “At The Mountains of Madness.” It does use albinism as something scary at one part (Lovecraft can’t shut up about his ableism). It lacks racism and most Lovecraft enthusiasts consider it Lovecraft’s best work.
My favorite Lovecraft stories are “The Colour Out of Space” and “The Dreams in the Witch House.”
Jeez, Howard.
When I read classic literature, I bump into racist language occasionally. Some books have it more than others, but the ones I’ve read, it’s been kind of rare, sometimes even subtle. Lovecraft, however…. It shows up AT LEAST once per STORY, and there’s nothing subtle about it. He has to hammer it home every single time, with slurs and derogatory descriptions. I’m on my 10th story, and though I’m not counting, I’m positive I’ve seen more than 13 examples by now. Not that anyone should be racist at all, even subtly, but dude.
Other than that, which keeps jarring me, I’m enjoying the stories. I like the investigative atmosphere and the mysteries surrounding the rising horrors. The dramatic reveals in the last couple paragraphs of each story is a little campy in our day and age, but I’m still into it. (Our guy Stevenson did it, too, in Strange Case during Lanyon’s letter to Utterson.)
Fair warning: Lovecraft stories are interesting and fun, but my god. Brace yourself for blatant racism.
#there’s a reason I don’t trust most people with Lovecraft’s work in terms of adaptations.#you might think it’s herbert west reanimator. no it’s not my fav. Lovecraft was not a fan in writing it and it shows in the writing.#hyde reblogs#tw racism

okay im doing it im organising (lying) my thoughts. witch house live from the witch house guy
it was Not witch house. there were some dreams in a witch house for sure but essentially all elements of lovecraft had been subtracted from it in its entirety. that’s okay, it was still fun, but it wasn’t witch house. there was a little bit of mathematics and discussions about another dimension but treated very much in the “otherworld” way. it wouldve been extremely cool to have this otherworld be an actual mathematical dimension in reality, but it’s only hinted at for the audience and the characters understand it as a limbo world. nice little bit of lovecraft underlying the whole thing you know? choosing to call it frank elwood has a terrible time to distinguish, courtesy of nik
the ghosts? i have very mixed feelings about them. my idea of ghosts and haunting is very specific and WAY more detached than the ghosts here. grief and the inability to move on was super cool, grief is one of the main things involved in my witch house, but i think it could’ve been done a little better? epperly is a little too human. siblings is fun and i really love exploring that dynamic, and as a motivation....after thinking about it a bit i think it can work, i think that a mythos story driven by that overwhelming love rather than knowledge could be neat. walter was still a little bit of a freak so i give the siblings thing a pass. i NEED a witch house adaptation where he is so fucked up though. the movie is in my head i swear and he gets Worse as he gets less sleep and falls deeper into that obsession. elwood mentions in the text that there’s incidents with other students and i want to see that side of walter. the greying with stress was there though which win! sidetracked anyways
keziah my love. your design was so cool. it almost seemed a little out of place sometimes? but it was still so awesome. and fucking irish brown jenkin. help me
the house was cool but a bit lackluster becuase. no angles :( which kind of defeats the purpose of it being in the title of the thing to me. however the sore on the ceiling? ohh. ohhhhhh. the house has leprosy. this house is alive. and i wish they’d done something a little more with that.
WIN OF FRANK! WIN OF FRANK! WIN OF FRANK! he was so. auauauua. theres no words here im just rotating him sorry. both frank has an awful time and original witch house are set up so well for the cycle to continue through him (walter wants epperly back, frank wants walter back) & that’s another important thing to me about witch house. the cycles
they got addiction and obsession! they got it! not in the way that i envisioned and not to the extreme that i envisioned but they have the themes that howie was sleeping on and i appreciate that
also win of trans metaphor <3 transes your walter. irishes him too actually!
im sure ill think of something more to say. but for now it boils down to that wasnt witch house but it was fun and i will watch it again because content! i went in going “well whatever it is its going to be more lovecraft than stuart gordon’s” and then i was wrong which was a lil disappointing but i still had a fun time even if i was going “what the hell is going on” sometimes. i will be honest having elwood makes up for a lot of sins <3 blorbo from my short story finally has a screen iteration
#whispers#ditwh#dreams in the witch house#cabinet of curiosities#frank has a bad time#hey cabinet people if youre seeing this in the witch house tag you want to look at the HPLHS' dark adventure radio theatre witch house#so bad. i have it if youre interested. infects you with my autism what who said that

THEME: Rootin', Tootin' and Shootin
Today's games are Wild-West-flavoured TTRPGs, complete with desert cacti, Smith & Wesson revolvers, and Cowboy Hats.
Weird Weird West, by Tom G.
A weird western TTRPG about cowboy monster hunters.
This is a Powered by the Apocalypse game with a little bit of Forged in the Dark, so expect an emphasis on narrative, with pieces of the book to set up the tone of the game - without a section that gives you specific pieces of lore. It follows much of the conventions of PbtA games, including the expectation that you play to find out what happens - but there's also some add-ons, such as inventory, special tracks for harm, and a weird power that you get when you choose your playbook.
There are two options for Weird Weird West: a free option, which should get you everything you really need to play the game, and a paid option. For $8, you get extra content, character art, and fully-coloured playbooks.
18XX Outlaw, by Deep Light Games.
AT THE OLD WEST, YOU CAN'T BE PICKY: law is corrupt when not far between. Most riches are with the rich people and tend to keep going there. So I guess it’s only natural someone brings some balance to it, right? And the Lord is my witness that there sure are many pals available for that.
You are free people doing what you need to survive at this weird heated place. Some authorities call you gunslingers, mercenaries, robbers, killers. Others call you bounty hunters, bodyguards, vigilantes. But that is their opinion. The real question now is: which job are you fancying, next?
18XX Outlaw is a 24XX micro-game, so it is a quick read, easy to pick up, and requires little prep. The missions can be put together using roll-tables, and if your character dies it's pretty easy to make a new one. Perhaps not the best game for long, drawn-out play, but if you just want something quick and in the genre, this game might be worth looking at. It's also only $3!
Dread Revolver, by kay w.
Welcome to an almost-eternal nightmare trek through a post-post-apocalyptic wasteland, pushed onwards in the face of near-certain death.
It is a fantasy Western nightmare after the second end of the world, where your Revolver binds you to vile existence no matter how many times you fall, until you earn your Doom.
It is loaded with one bullet and one ending.
This game is based on Charge and Blades in the Dark, but unlike the tendency for these kinds of games to operate in the theatre of the mind, it provides a hexcrawl for a sample adventure, called Thousand Damned Deep. This is likely a darker game than some of the other ones on this list, with an expectation that the players won't necessarily get out of this alive. I'd pick up this game for a group who wants to explore some heavier themes, or at least who aren't afraid to kill off their characters at some point.
Knights of the Road, by bordercholly.
The Western States have entered an age of wonders. Technological innovations transform the lives of her people. Automobiles connect vast distances over glistening highways. Radio waves carry new voices, thoughts, and art to ears around the nation. Neon lights hold back the night on the shoulders of massive dams. And the train—ceaseless, thundering, unrelenting—powers it all; pumping food, material, and people through the veins of this great extractive beast.
But these new wonders have not brought blessings to everyone. With the Federal Government in the pocket of powerful Robber Barons and Vampires; the poor, and the land itself, are dispossessed and exploited. In The Western States, many stow away on the freight trains in search of paying work.
And then there are the monsters.
Knights of the Road has you playing monster-hunters on a train in the 1920's, protecting folks the government doesn't bother about, working for whoever will give you a meal. Character creation is pretty simple, and the rules require at least 2d20's for your basic rolls. You'll also need other dice for roll tables, damage dice, etc.
There are some mechanics that require you to keep track of your gear, as well as special rules for Hired Hands and vehicle combat. This game also comes with multiple pdfs - for players and GMs, as well as a map and a bestiary of sorts. Quite a lot for only $5!
Drifters, by Spencer Campbell of GilaRPGs.
The wastes call. Not to you, but the iron hanging on your hip.
Drifters is a tabletop RPG of cursed gunslingers, wandering the wastes of the frontier in search of problems, and purpose.
Carrying a capital-G Gun, you have been granted near immortality. It only costs everything in return.
Drifters is a hack of the Slayers RPG, also by Spencer Campbell, which means that it imports the Slayers style of play by giving the player asymmetric playbooks: your experience of the game will be different depending on the kind of playbook you take. It's not a carbon copy however - there's new Patrol mechanics that help you slowly chip away at a corrupting threat.
The book itself looks gorgeous, and beautifully laid-out.This game has both a pdf and a print version, so if you prefer physical books, that option is there for you.
The Great Soul Train Robbery, by Cloven Pine Games.
On the road to hell there was a railway line. An express train to the infernal city of Dis, crewed by furies and carrying treasure and souls to damnation. You’re going to rob it.
Spin an allegorical Weird Western yarn as your sharpshooters, fiddlers, homesteader widows, and other Desperados attempt a Hellish train heist. Will you claim your prize from the train, or be overcome, damned, or broken by the heist?
This game uses a simple system based on Rowan, Rook, & Decard's Honey Heist. Your Desperados are a motley crew with mixed motives, so they all have two stats: Lover and Sinner. Use one to make human connections and perform selfless acts, and the other to do dirty deeds and brutal acts.
The Great Soul Train Robbery actually has multiple formats: a zine pdf, a two page edition, and a print version. With the full version, you get more detailed character options that you normally do in a Honey Heist game. It also has significantly more GM advice than a regular Honey Heist game, which might be a good resource for newer GMs.
Fistful of Darkness, by monkeyecho.
Imagine a world with the magic and mystery of the frontier: wide open plains of the Old Wild West in all its beauty and madness, where violence and sacrifice dominate every single day. Now add the Hellstone rush, underground mayhem in mines and brand new sciences & machines. Don’t forget immigration, injustice, vigilante justice, outlaws, gunslingers, slick talkers and setting suns. This all in the face of an impending doom: Demons and the four riders bringing the end of the world as you know it. How do you make it to the top of this powder keg, which side will you take in the impending war and how much will your soul suffer?
A Fistful of Darkness is a Weird West Fantasy hack of Blades in the Dark with heavy emphasis on the fantasy part. It’s not intended to be an accurate history lesson or a simulation of past times. It is designed to be a cinematic game which lets you play all those Weird West tropes towards the end of the world.
A Fistful of Darkness is not a complete game. It’s a hack for Blades in the Dark by John Harper, and therefore needs the Blades book in order to play. If you like the streamlined action and simple dice system of Forged in the Dark games, you're likely to love A Fistful of Darkness, with its rich setting and intriguing playbooks. A solid find.
