When I make these designs I literally like completely forget how they’re described in the book and js use my own interpretation— hence why I drew roden with like redder hair instead of dirty blond. I js like imagining things and putting them on digital paper :3

still wondering if Darius being conners son was preplanned from the start cuz I mean there is some foreshadowing MAYBE but like captive kingdom has a lot of js random shit from what I remember so it could’ve been neilsen grasping at straws. I still really like the idea, js curious.

Jumping on the Ascendance bandwagon because I remembered I’m actually apart of the fandom. Also, spoilers, duh.

let’s talk about king Eckbert.

I don’t think anyone has really mentioned him, or talked about why he’s such a good character. And now I’m here with the love.

ECKBERT IS JUST AN OLDER JARON!

Think about it. He had sensed danger in the castle, and instead of being a normal person and bringing his son back, he found him, and gave him a rock. And knowing his son so well, he put the idea in his head it was gold. And he knew this would work, because he loved his son. He knew Jaron wouldn’t let anything go once it was in his head. And this little goblin used that. He set it all up just in case he died. And when he did, Jaron had proof he didn’t even know he had.

Not only that, but it was very clear in the books that he loved both his sons dearly. He loved Darius so much, that everyone knew he was his boy. No one ever even questioned where he came from, because Eckbert loved him so much. He wasn’t denied a kingship because he was adopted. He happily accepted a baby into his life and heart.

He also adored his wife, so browny points. Not only that, but like Jaron, he literally dressed up like a peasant and just did his thing? Dude went out to be a little bard man and came back with a wife? How can you not love that?!

Also, what parent wouldn’t yell at their kid for theft or burning a tapestry? I’d be grounding my kids too!

We have a very bias opinion on Eckbert, because Jaron tells it that way. He’s known for grudges, he’s known for shining himself in a brighter light. And he’s known for loving his father despite it all.

Jaron may have had Erin’s eyes, and her big heart. But he is 100% his father’s son, mind and soul.

And if anyone needs any more reasons to love him, I have a whole separate rant I can do.

The Captive Kingdom Review

Ok so I finally got around to reading TCK and I’m so read to review it so let’s go!

WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS WILL BE DISCUSSED

First things first, I’ll talk about the overall plot and flow: 

I actually went into this book with very mixed emotions, I’d heard many who say “eh it wasn’t that good” or “I didn’t really like it” and that’s perfectly fine but I actually did! The plot was intriguing enough to keep me reading and maybe I’m just not good at predicting plots because this was the first book where I truly believed Jaron was going to die at the end. (Dark, am I right?) Anyways, it wasn’t predictable and the newer characters were interesting as well without slowing down the plot  (I still dislike them but I digress) :) 

Characters: 

Ok so we’ll start off with the king himself, Jaron. He wasn’t much different than before (although his one-liners were even more superb this time around) and honestly, it was so good to see the rest of his friends start to speak up about how secretive he is. I love Jaron so much, like he’s probably my favorite male book character ever but the walls he’s built up are insanely tough to remove (which is understandable) and I liked how they began starting to tell him that. 

Some of things said though destroyed me like Tobias saying everyone, including Imogen would eventually give up on him literally broke my heart. But overall, it was just to confront those immediately again, hopefully with the next book, we’ll see Jaron really just release all those boxed in emotions. 

Now, here’s where I wasn’t too pleased with a character. Roden. And it’s not because I despised his character in any form but mainly because almost every time he’s had character development, it’s gone on vacation and comes back at the end of the book- I dunno, just kinda makes me sad. He deserves better. Honestly almost everyone does JKSDJFKSJ but that’s besides the point. 

Finally, the last character I really wanted to talk about was Darius. I’m not going to say I completely hate him (although I won’t lie the slander is funny imo) but I’m not a huge fan either, what he said to Jaron about being an embarrassment to the throne really hit deep because it wasn’t the phrase, it was the fact that he said it, the person Jaron grew up with and trusted so much. But yeah, that’s my main rant right now about it. 

To end it off, I’ll list off a few of my favorite moments. 

Tobias and Roden both saying they’re Jaron bc I couldn’t stop laughing from the Radio Rebel vibes 

Almost everyone of Jaron’s sarcastic lines and an honorable mention has to be the spice cake nightmare because how could I forget that- 

Mott looking at Trea in love and Jaron freaking out bc now everything is at risk (I dunno that part was just lowkey hilarious)

And there’s probably a ton more I’ll rant about later! 

So, overall I’d give this book a 4/5. I enjoyed it and with TSC on it’s way, I’ll post another review soon! Hope you enjoyed and made it through the rant haha. Thank you for reading! <33

I dont know how much this encompasses brotherhood, but the idea that Darius would always help Jaron with the small gestures makes me believe this is something of the sort.
