Combining “how messed up are they” with “would they be at all cooperative with therapy”, I think the narrator of Rebecca (Daphne? let’s call her Daphne) and Max de Winter (after the events of the novel) could benefit the most from it. They care about each other, but they’re both insecure, avoidant, and deeply traumatized, and as a result they’re not communicating and are kind of in a holding pattern of “non-terrible is good enough.”

(They’d have benefitted from it earlier too, given that most of their non-murder problems are related to lack of communication, but they Max wouldn’t have been able to be honest with the therapist then due to the, you know, murder.)

Jane and Rochester are happy as they are at the end of the book. Cathy and Heathcliff wouldn’t want it and would mess with the therapist. Gilbert and Helen are happy, though Helen’s been through enough trauma that some good counselling couldn’t hurt. Lydia and Wickham don’t care enough to participate. Richard and Anne aren’t fixable.

as always we need a caveat that i have so much love in my heart that choosing favourites is hard and i'm gonna exclude some big heavy hitters from this year that are fresh in my mind and instead focus on the ones that absolutely have vacation space in my frontal lobe

rebecca (daphne du maurier) - i relate to the narrator saying she "shall never be rid of rebecca" because Me Too girl!! a gateway drug into classics. absolutely intoxicating without a word misplaced or misspent. i enjoyed reading it more for the second time not only because i knew the plot but because there was so much of any given theme to stick your teeth into (i had colour coded highlights for gender and doubling in addition to general excellent prose/foreshadowing). a whole thesis could be written about the ways that rebecca and the narrator both perform androgyny--the narrator essentially fails at performing any sort of gender, rebecca is too good at androgyny and that is what kills her. not to toot my own horn with the one decent line in my otherwise incomprehensible review but: "while rebecca sails freely between masculinity and femininity, not-rebecca drift unmoored between both." i could write more about the structure and point of view but i am big sleepy so unfortunately that post will half to solely exist in the hypothetical. i am always thinking about rebecca

wuthering heights (emily bronte) the thing about wuthering heights is that the first time i read it all the way through i gave it 2.5 stars and was absolutely enthralled by what it lacked and then like 5 months later i think emily bronte personally tunnelled into my brain and compelled me to bump the rating up to 4. at first i was just like Oh the ghosts they story is stuck in a time loop while the rest of the world moves the only way it can be broken is if the cycle of abuse is also broken which is True but the more i thought about it the less i actually thought of the ghosts (shocking i know) and more the possibility of rancid trans rep t4t cathy & heathcliff. cathy trying to get around gender like it's a blocked path and ultimately dying because of compulsory femininity. heathcliff determined to make up for what society sees as a deficit (his race) with his gender, playing four-dimensional chess with his gender trying to find the one (1) way to Do It Right which ultimately means deliberately emulating all the worst parts of masculinity so he has some modicum of power. this WILL be a post in the future and that is a threat.

hamlet. i don't need to say anything more about this one. we've unfortunately all seen the horatio monologue that people keep tagging as poetry even though the word MONOLOGUE is in the first line of the description.

the brothers karamazov (fyodor dostoevsky) frankly an insane choice for my first fedya d especially given the circumstances but man....mitya karamazov is one of the Characters Of All Time. honestly it took me a longass time to read because uhhh being intensely suicidal in a tiny studio apartment with a job you only took for convenience's sake in huge and unfamiliar country during a global pandemic is not the best environment to read your first dostoevsky in but also is maybe the most appropriate. so it took me a while to read and at first i wasn't sure if i understood half of what i was reading but gave it 4 stars for sheer craft and then maybe a week later it really hit me how good it was. i am Not Immune to atreus house. one of the readings i like to consider is somewhat basic but seeing it as biographical specifically alyosha as a mirror of dostoevsky's son alyosha who died at 3 from epileptic complications. book as a mirror and a shrine and a grave all at once. also i'm legally required to mention the unwritten brothers k sequel brothers k ii: alexey kills the tsar. my literary white whale. i have never wanted to read a book more and this one doesn't even exist. kill me! your slave and enemy!

the epic of gilgamesh. bro. bro. 1400 years old and it's a deceptively simple story about transformative love and the earth-shattering grief that comes from losing that love. please refer to my post about how gilgamesh and the velveteen rabbit are fundamentally the same story. it turns out that my method for answering asks is to just type until i run out of ideas and get so sleepy thank you goodnight

here, from one eldest sibling to another, having been so tragically and rudely outgrown by all my younger siblings, let me paint you a picture:

Christmas 2031.

Baz.

We’re heading back to Hampshire for Christmas this year. Everybody is. The three of us, Mordelia and the twins, even Fiona and Nico. Swithin will be home from Watford.

He’s sixteen, now, midway through sixth year. It’s the year things get serious at Watford. (The year the boater hats come off.)

I haven’t been back to Hampshire for sixteen years. Not since—

But when I park the car, I can feel that what my father says is true. The magic’s really coming back.

Doesn’t make the place feel less haunted. (Literally. Figuratively.)

I almost want to turn around and go home. I let Simon get out and retrieve Heathcliff from the backseat before I even consider undoing my seatbelt. And I let Simon open my door for me even though he has his hands full of baby and the sparkling non-alcoholic wine he insisted we bring for my parents.

Considerate.

I take the baby, but I make him carry the “wine”. He drums his ring against the glass of the bottle and I consider asking him to swap. But Heathcliff is mostly asleep in my arms and his suit (which is criminally tiny) is rumpled enough from the ride over.

He’s just about one now, and I still don’t feel old enough to be bringing a baby with us to Christmas dinner, even at 34. Everyone acts like it’s normal. Daphne even said she still has Swithin’s old highchair.

“Ready?” Simon rests his free hand on the small of my back.

Sixteen years. They’ve been a good sixteen years. Not perfect. But better than I expected. Maybe better than I deserved. With Simon by my side. With Dev and Niall, once they came back around. With Penny and Shepard and the baby Bunces. With flats and houses shared with Fiona and Nico and Mordelia, and even Sophie and Petra for a while there.

“I don’t think I’ll ever be ready,” I say.

Simon shakes his head. “I wasn’t either, the first time I came here. Remember?”

He laughs. Like I could forget.

“The only time,” I say.

“Not anymore.”

Mordelia answers the door when we knock and then screams loud enough to wake Heathcliff when she sees us. He fusses into my shoulder. Crowley. The older I get, the less I understand how she isn’t related to Fiona. She’s even put a purple streak in her hair.

I get the baby calmed before my parents and Swithin all file in. No doubt alerted by Mordelia. Who needs an alarm system when you have a sister?

“Swithin!” Simon calls. To my baby brother, who is hardly a baby anymore at all, is he? “Come meet your nephew.”

Swithin shuffles over, hunched and drawn in in the way only teenagers seem to manage. Even he looks out of place in this house, too dark and old for life to go on here. It feels wrong to pass a baby to him. He shouldn’t be old enough to hold one.

Which makes that all-too-familiar guilt pinprick at the back of my throat, since I’ve spent the better part of the past sixteen years trying to make a home anywhere other than here or Oxford. Avoiding my father’s attitude. (Avoiding Daphne's as well.) Not trying to avoid him. He was always just a baby.

But he was always at home, there with them. Until he wasn’t. And then it was just Christmases and summers, and weren’t we always busy during Christmases and summers?

Time keeps passing. I can’t keep up.

I clap Swithin on the back because I’m not sure what else to do.

He stands up straighter.

Mordelia gasps.

“What?”

“He is!” She’s practically giddy. “Circe. He’s taller than Baz now.”

“He is not,” I say.

She takes Heathcliff, who coos like this isn’t shaping up to be the worst moment of my year.

“Take off your shoes,” she demands. “Stand back-to-back.”

“Is that really necessary?” I’m already doing it, lining up against him next to the wall.

“Stop stretching,” Swithin insists.

“You stop.” I put a hand on his shoulder and press down. He squirms away.

Snow levels a hand over our heads. Kisses my cheek. “Sorry, babe.”

“Don’t lie,” I say.

“I’m not lying,” he laughs. And then gets out his wallet and gives Mordelia 20 pounds.

“Simon, what the fuck,” I whisper.

He laughs again. “Why are you upset? I was betting on you.”

“He’s not supposed to be taller,” I say. I sound near-despondent.

“That’s what I was saying, too,” he says. “Don’t worry. It’s just an inch or two.”

“Or two?”

“Babe,” he says. “It’s fine.”

It’s really not. Because how am I supposed to live the rest of my life looking up at my little brother? When I’ve changed his nappies and sat in the bleachers at his football matches and started him on violin myself. I was there for his first magic words.

And now—

And now I have to act like it’s normal. Because it is, I guess. Because I ought to be glad for it. That I even got to see him grow up. That I’ll get to see my baby grow up, too.

So it’s fine. I put Heathcliff in Swithin’s old highchair. And when Fiona and Nico finally get here, they take one look between Swithin and myself and line us up against the wall to check again.

And it’s fine. I don’t even stop to remind Fiona that I’m still taller than she is.

I just hope Swithin ends up taller than Baz. I know it'll take him a while but I can be patient.

So I'm not a Gothic novel reader.

I found Rebecca distinctly uncomfortable and I still can't decide on the ending but flat out refuse to reread it. Sorry no Dame Daphne du Maurier for me.

The only thing I remember about Wuthering Heights is that the English moors are depressing* and that I wanted to toss Heathcliff out the nearest window. No Emily Brontë either.

Her sister faired better in my opinion. I can actually reread Jane Eyre even with the subjectivity iffy ending, so Charlotte did something right.

Mexican Gothic.... now that I want to reread. And I didn't even think I was going to be very into it when I started it. Some of the writing style, especially how some descriptions and certain details were repeated again and again got on my nerves. But it was eerie and compelling even with all the really messed up elements. I essentially couldn't put it down

*what I've seen of the Scottish moors were quite nice, though they probably look their least forlorn in summer, and electricity does wonders.
