“You goin’ to be alright then, Danny?” Nicholas heard Doris ask.

Nicholas heard Doris kiss Danny on the cheek, and then she slipped out of the little curtained off area that theoretically gave Constable Butterman some privacy from the rest of the ward. “He’s all yours,” she told Nicholas with her usual cheeky grin. Nicholas gave her his usual formal grimace in return. He’d never been especially good at smiling.

Danny... looked exactly like Nicholas had expected him to look. Battered and tired. But he had a smile on his face that turned into a small grin when Nicholas closed the curtain behind him.

“Hey, d’you think if I’d lost an arm they’d’ve just cut the rest of it off? Then I could’ve been Robocop.”

Nicholas opened his mouth to tell Danny that no, Robocop wasn’t real, and even if he was it was not technology being used by the Metropolitan Police Service. Then he reconsidered.

“You would have been Bionic Law Enforcement Assistance,” he said instead. “Robocop is trademarked.”

Danny laughed. Though it was a short chuckle that made him grimace, it was still a laugh. And Nicholas couldn’t help smiling in return.
