The Marriage of Nicholas II, Tsar of Russia, 26th November 1894
Artist: Laurits Regner Tuxen (Danish, 1853-1927)
Date: 1895-1896
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Royal Collection Trust, United Kingdom
Description
The wedding between Nicholas II and Princess Alix of Hesse took place in the Imperial Chapel of the Winter Palace on 26 November 1894, just over twenty years after the marriage of the Tsar's aunt in the same chapel. The wedding was announced in April that year and was to take place on the Empress Marie Feodorovna's birthday. Tragically, Emperor Alexander III died of kidney disease on 1 November, and the court was thrown into mourning with the exception of the day of the marriage.
The royal couple stand, holding lighted candles, whilst the Metropolitan Archbishop of St Petersburg, Mgr Palladius, makes the sign of the cross before them. Ella, (Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna), writing to her grandmother, Queen Victoria, described her sister's dress as 'embroidered silver cloth Russian court dress & very pretty', helpfully including a sketch. She added that 'Alix being tall will look perfectly lovely'. She wears a kokoshnik tiara and a small diamond crown, beneath which is a wreath of orange blossom, her imperial gold-embroidered mantle is lined with ermine. The Tsar is dressed in the uniform of a Hussar. In the background George I, King of Greece stands to the left of Christian IX, King of Denmark, who looks towards his daughter, the Dowager Empress; the Princess of Wales, and the Queen of Greece. The Prince of Wales can be seen dressed in the uniform of Russian Dragoons to the right of the portrait.

Queen Alexandra of Great Britain and Ireland (née Princess of Denmark) with her Great-Nieces Grand Duchesses Olga, Tatiana, and Maria Nikolaevna, Denmark 1901 ✨
“King Edward VII arrived after we did, and the day he was expected Queen Alexandra came into the nurseries and told me he was coming, and asked me to make the children look very nice. I showed her the dresses I had prepared for them, and she admired them very much. She often said they were always so nicely dressed and kept.”

EU Supreme Court to review Danish “ghetto law” for possible breach of anti-discrimination rules
The European Union’s Supreme Court will hear arguments on whether a Danish law restricting the concentration of ethnic minorities in certain neighbourhoods violates EU anti-discrimination law.
A case before the High Court of Eastern Denmark between the Danish state and tenants in communities covered by the Danish “ghetto law” has been suspended pending the judgement of the EU Court of Justice (CJEU).
The CJEU will assess whether the Danish law violates the EU’s Race Equality Directive, which protects ethnic minorities from discrimination. The so-called “ghetto law” in Denmark, officially known as the Parallel Society Package, was passed in 2018 to address social problems in certain low-income neighbourhoods, often referred to as “ghettos.”
The law aims to reduce the concentration of immigrant communities, reduce unemployment and improve educational standards. It provides stricter penalties for certain offences committed in such areas, requires residents to have a higher level of proficiency in the Danish language, and includes a policy to reduce the number of non-Westerners by demolishing or converting public housing.
However, the law has been criticised for discriminating against and stigmatising immigrant communities.

fuckboy!Soap x Shy!Reader x Ghost (college!au) p.2 here’s part 1
Uhh warning soap isn’t in this chapter and reader isn’t acting very shy rn lol
Simon managed to drag you, shocked and still on shaky legs, into his surprisingly clean car and across town to a little cafe. The guy with eye bags behind the counter starts making his order as soon as he comes in the door— must be a regular.
At the counter he points to a couple of items in the display case, before prompting you— you stutter out your go-to, and Simon whips out a beat-up debit card before you can think to pull out your wallet.
The largest size of earl grey almost looks normal in his large hand, a plate of pastries in his other mitt. You grab your own drink and follow where he tilts his head in gesture.
When you sit, he pushes the plate towards you. Like he’s dropping a fresh kill at your doorstep—a courting gift. Eat. Be provided for, sensitive doe. You pick up a danish, if only to ease the clench of his fist on the table. He pulls the black surgical mask down to sip his tea in a way that’s almost hilariously delicate given his permanent scowl.
You couldn’t have sat in silence for more than 10 minutes. But it feels like a lot longer.
“Simon. What are we doing here?” You probe quietly. Saying his name when you’ve never actually been introduced to each other feels wrong. Like you’ve stolen a piece of him that he hasn’t given freely.
“He never takes you out,” he grunts. As if that explains anything.
“It’s not… what we have isn’t like that.”
——
Simon chews on your overly diplomatic response for a minute. That’s what it must be, chewing— why else would he grind his teeth together when his tongue is still wet with his favorite soothing beverage?
You’re kind. Kinder than the mutt deserves.
“But you want it to be.” He says it with an almost biblical level of finality. Your pastry making the plate clink against the table as you drop it back down.
“What would you know about what I want?”
“You’re an easy read. S’how y’got yourself in this situation. Soap’s not exactly a rocket scientist when it comes to chattin’ up birds, you’re jus’ an open book.”
Simon shamelessly stares at your lips as they quirk in anger— so unused to vitriol. It’s gorgeous.
“So he’s using me. I know. Is that what this was about? Taking me on a pity date to let me down gently? Or did you just wanna see if you could have a go as well?”
Seeing you like this. It’s something else. He’s seen you mope around so many times, silently begging for crumbs that will never be tossed your way. It’s even harder to pull his gaze from you, now that you’re hissing. He wants to dig his teeth into your heart shoulder and rip out the bruise Johnny left you with.
Soap is his best friend.
“He’s a dickhead. You don’t need him. You’ll find something better.”
Simon has never been what he would call “something better”. Not in any sense. But this might be the first time he’s wanted to be.
“I won’t,” you say with the lower half of your face hidden by the sipping of your drink. As if it’s quenched your fire, and all that leaves you is vapor. “I’m not… the type.”
He gets it. Really, he does. He’s not the type either— or so he’s thought. You’re making him wonder if he’s imagined that about himself— the same way you’ve clearly imagined it about yourself.
“What’s the rest of your day look like?”
“…Nothing set in stone.” The not that it’s any of your fucking business goes unspoken, but is plain to see in the air between you.
“Lemme take you around. On a date. Be mine for today. If y’hate it, I’ll drop you back at yours and the next time you come round, I’ll mind my business and keep the door closed.” Well, that’s the most you’ve ever heard him say in one go. And it begs a question.
“What happens if I like it? You’ll fuck me in a different room of the same frat house?” Your unimpressed look makes him feel ravenous. She-wolf is threatening to turn her eyes from the display. Rejection. Not an option. “Or maybe you’ll ask me to go steady,” you huff under your breath like it’s a bad joke.
“If y’like it, then you’ll stay mine, and y’won’t fuckin’ want for anything. You’re supposed to be worshipped, not begging for scraps at a mutt’s door.”
He really didn’t mean to say it like that. He meant to bite his tongue. He’s trying not to think of how hot it would be if his intensity scared you into pissing yourself. He’s trying not to let himself show through the lines. It’s not working. Any of it.
The venomous bile that spills from behind his teeth reminds him that his eloquence is just one of many reasons why he’s single. Why he should be muzzled instead of kept. He doesn’t know why he’s taking it upon himself to do this. Selfishness, maybe. There’s plenty of better men he could’ve put up to the task, easy. The man who wants to feel blood on the back of his throat makes a terrible savior.
He feels like he can see your pupils dilate. You pick up your danish again and take a bite. You hold it out for him to try. It’s a test. You don’t think someone with eyes like his can handle doing cutesy, saccharine things. Like what couples do. That must be it.
He tries not to think of his teeth going past the flakey flesh of the pastry and sinking into your fingers. When his tongue meets the butter between the layers, he tries not to think of the salt sweet flavor of your sweat and tears. A seed from the blackberry jam gets thoughtlessly crushed between his molars— he hopes the bitterness will suddenly wake him up and he won’t be a beast crying for love at the heart of the world anymore.
It doesn’t.

The Danish Royal Court has posted a video showing a new tiara being made!
Queen Mary has decided to use the rose cut diamond belt to create a new bandeau tiara. Changes have been made to the crown jewels in the past and this one is not permanent.
Goldsmith, Matias Hasbo Dinesen, made the new tiara so that all of the settings have been left intact.
The rose cut diamond set is part of the crown jewels and consists of a belt and large brooch that belonged to Princess Charlotte Amalie, sister of King Christian VI. It's not used very often so this change is very smart.
The Danish Crown Jewels are on display at Rosenborg Castle when not in use, can not be taken outside of Denmark, and are only worn by the queen. It includes four sets of jewelry; the emerald set (including the tiara), the pearl and ruby set, the brilliant diamond set, and the rose cut diamond set.
Do you think we will see Queen Mary wear her new tiara for the state banquet later this week?

please help me pay for my dad's funeral
i decided it was easier to make a new post. please reblog. i appreciate it so much.
on december 20th my dad passed away, after i had been caring for him for a year and a half with his heath becoming progressively worse over these past couple of months. he had absolutely no money at all, as he was disabled in several ways. i have three sisters but only one of them have been helping me with caring for him, and we just don't have any money either. my sister is doing random temp jobs in pre-schools because that's all she's been able to get, and i am disabled myself and can't work.
on december 27th we had a small ceremony in the hospital chapel with only the closest family present, and afterwards we went to my sister's for coffee and i had baked my dad's favorite cake. we are incredibly to have found a very sweet and empathetic funeral arranger (english not my first language i'm sorry) who has been very understanding of our financial situation.
but even the most economic of death aftercare is highly pricey. the price for her services has come to 12,000 danish kroner but that's not including a headstone which we don't even have a price for yet but it looks like several thousand on top of that along with fees for having the urn put in the ground, and there's also obligatory court fees for estate settlement that i don't even know about yet because the beaurocracy is slow and i am fumbling in the dark here doing all of this on my own and i have to be so damn practical in handling the literal worst thing in my entire life.
i will spare my rambling. so far from my last post so many lovely people have reblogged and given lovely donations and so many kind words, but at this point donations amount to about 1300 danish kroner, which is just a drop in the bucket, and i am so ashamed to have to go online begging for help to do this, but i don't know what else to do.
i would do the whole countdown to show how much i need and how much has already been donated but at this point i genuinely don't even know how much the final cost will be but it's looking like at least 16,000 danish kroner.
even if you can't donate reblogging is so appreciated thank you so much and i am so sorry
please donate to my ko-fi

Let Me Speak of the Grief of Horatio
By Bodhrán M.
Let me speak of the grief of Horatio,
A young man bereft of every tie and tether
On that cold stone floor of Death’s bloody hall.
The last ghost of that Danish court –
Shackled by a brother’s word
To the pen which bleeds with ev’ry stroke.
That last, greyed ghost.
Cobwebbed in mourning clothes
The first and last link in the chain
Which madness forged
And wove into nooses for all his loves.
Condemned by some uncaring wraith
To be alone and last.
For what? For what?
For trying to be kind? For trying to be brave?
No. For being in the path of retribution.
Pity the grief of Horatio, his tears black ink
And his hands shake in the memories of hope
Where once he was a brother,
Now condemned to be a ghost.

Anglo-Saxon Warfare
Anglo-Saxon warfare was characterised by frequent and violent conflicts between petty kings, which ultimately led to the rise of larger kingdoms such as the Kingdom of Mercia, the Kingdom of Northumbria, and the Kingdom of Wessex. In early Anglo-Saxon England, military success was expected of a king: conquering lands and collecting tribute was how a royal warlord rewarded his followers and ensured their loyalty.
Sources
We are provided with several primary sources on Anglo-Saxon warfare. For descriptions of military campaigns, we have the Ecclesiastical History of the English People, written by the 8th-century Northumbrian monk Bede, and The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, a chronicle recorded at the royal court of the West Saxon dynasty. Poems, including Beowulf, the Battle of Brunanburh, and the Battle of Maldon, provide insight into military culture, with Beowulf explaining that the Danish king, Scyld Scefing, was a good king precisely because he had beaten his neighbouring tribes into submission and received tribute from them.
Archaeological findings and the Bayeux Tapestry provide visual representations of warriors and their weaponry and finally, law codes, land charters, and the Domesday Book help explain military customs, including landowners' military obligations and the expected number of soldiers each region could muster.

is there any aromantic themed folklore stories?
I think that very much depends on your personal definition. Of course there are plenty of folktales that do not include romance, but for me that usually isn't quite enough to consider them aromantic. For me the folk- and fairy tales that feel the most aromantic to me, are the ones where the plot makes me expect there will be a love interest along the way or a wedding at the end, but instead there is neither.
Here are the ones I've taken a personal liking to so far:
The Shoes That Were Danced to Pieces
Source: Cape Verdian folktale, collected by E. Parsons from Antonio Soares Rosa in 1916-1917.
Content warnings: princess-shaming.
Character I read as aro: The hero.
Why: He answers a royal proclamation that states that whoever is able to find out how the princess wears out seven pairs of shoes every night can marry her and have half the kingdom. When he accomplishes this, however, he declines the marriage and returns home to build his mother a new house.
Read it: Full text online.
How The Devil Married Three Sisters
Source: Italian folktale, published by Widter and Wolf in 1866.
Content warnings: fairy tale violence, abusive spouse.
Character I read as aro: The youngest of the three sisters.
Why: While the first sister is pleased by her handsome suitor (the devil) and the second sister is also described as "wooed and won" by him, the third agrees to marriage only because he is rich. She proceeds to save her sisters, outsmarts the devil, and they all get away.
Read it: Full text online.
David Cotterson
Source: Danish fairy tale, collected by Jens Kamp, published in 1879.
Content warning: suicide contemplation, fairy tale violence.
Character I read as aro: The hero, David Cotterson.
Why: His biggest desire is to become a sailor and see the world. In his biggest adventure he defeats a seductive witch, saves a prince who has been cursed to be a dog. He then decided what he wants most of all is to got home to his loving parents, which he does.
Read it: Offline in this book, or my summary online.
The Squire’s Bride
Source: Norwegian folktale, collected by Asbjørnsen and Moe, published 1841-1844.
Content warning: attempted arranged marriage, attempted kidnapping.
Character I read as aro: The heroine, a farmers daughter.
Why: She's being courted by an old, rich squire. She rejects him, not for a better (kinder, younger) suitor, but simply because she doesn't want him. He doesn't back down so she humiliates him to teach him a lesson.
Read it: Full text online.
The Three Brothers
Source: German folktale, collected by the brothers Grimm, published 1857.
Content warning: ends with natural death.
Characters I read as aro: The protagonists, three brothers.
Why: Their father tasks them to learn a trade to show who deserves to inherit their family home. They become a master barber, blacksmith and swordsman, and the third inherits the house. But because they love each other so much they decide to share the house. They live happily and grow old together, after which all three die close together and are laid in the same grave.
Read it: Full text online.
Diarmaid and Grainne
Source: Celtic legend, Scottish variant collected by H. MacLean in 1859, from Alexander Macalister.
Content warning: tragedy, coercion, murder of protagonist.
Character I read as aro: The warrior Diarmaid.
Why: He has a love spot on his face, which he keeps hidden to prevent women from falling in love with him. Grainne (who is married to his lord Fionn) sees it and falls for him, but he refuses to go with her until she outsmarts him and places him under obligation to do so. He goes with her but they live in a house with separate beds. Grainne betrays Diarmaid for yet another man and Diarmaid ends up being killed by Fionn before he realises that Diarmaid has never touched his wife.
Read it: Full text online.
Slawa
Source: Romanian fairy tale, found in a German collection from 1977, sadly unsourced.
Content warning: attempted kidnapping, fairy tale violence.
Character I read as aro: The heroine, Slawa
Why: She is a poor young woman so beautiful that the cruel tsar wants to marry her. She keeps refusing and he gets violent, so she resorts to defeating him with magic (which she has because she was once a doll brought to life through the love of her parents), so she is free to go see the world.
Read it: You can download my translation here.
King Bear
Source: Danish folktale, collected by Jens Kamp, published in 1879.
Content warning: animal death.
Character I read as aro: One of the two protagonists, the eldest of two brothers.
Why: The older brother doesn't fully understand why his younger brother has fallen in love with an imprisoned princess, but helps him win her hand anyway. He stays happily at the royal court, but never marries himself.
Read it: Offline in this book.
And just because I still love them, I did write two literary fairy tales with aro protagonists myself some years ago:
The Man and the Mermaid, in which a man meets a mermaid after losing the woman he thought he wanted to marry.
The River Sprite, in which a woman helps a river sprite who is determined to repay her.
Hope there's something on this list that makes you happy!
#I really tried to format this in a way so that it wouldn't need a readmore#but I couldn't#I guess that's a good thing#my list has grown since last time#aro representation#and probably also#ace representation#for good measure#folklore#fairy tale#fairy tales#aromantic#aromanticism#sources#I'm hopeful there will be more examples in Gonzenbach's work#but I haven't read them all yet
