Book Review: The Little Book of Hygge: The Danish Way to Live Well by: Meik Wiking
We are social creatures, and the importance of this is clearly seen when one compares the satisfaction people feel in relationships with their overall satisfaction with life. The most important social relationships are close relationships in which you experience things together with others, and experience being understood; where you share thoughts and feelings, and both give and receive support.…

To a surprising degree, healthcare today still focuses on aspects of the science that were adopted during the witch-hunts: the spirit of aggressive domination and the hatred of women; belief in the omnipotence of science and of those who exercise it, but also in the separation of body and mind, and in a cold rationalism, shorn of all emotion. To begin with, the medical realm tends to perpetuate the impulse to dominate and subjugate, the beginnings of which Carolyn Merchant plots out in her book. And sometimes this is taken to cartoonish lengths: in December 2017, a British surgeon was tried for lasering his initials onto the livers of two patients during organ-transplant operations. And this attitude can be at its worst in practice on female patients. First, as Florence Montreynaud notes, "Women's organs are mapped out with men's names," like flags affixed to various parts of our anatomy. She explains:
“The canals connecting each ovary to the uterus were, until 1997, known as the Fallopian Tubes, after the Italian surgeon who first described them in detail in the sixteenth century—before they became the uterine tubes. The little sacs inside the ovaries where, between puberty and the menopause, an ovocyte matures every month are the Graafian follicles, named after Regnier de Graaf, a Dutch doctor in the seventeenth century. The glands that secrete liquid moistening the vulva and vaginal opening are called Bartholin's glands, after the seventeenth-century Danish anatomist. Worse still, in the twentieth century a pleasure zone within the vagina was given the appellation the ‘G-spot,’ celebrating the initial of the German doctor Ernst Grägenberg.
“Imagine the equivalent for men: Garrett Ander-son's corpus cavernosum or J. C. Wright's canals . . .”
Men's stranglehold on the profession is far from a broadly abstract force, either. The world of healthcare—especially when it comes to gynecology and reproductive rights—seems keen to exercise ongoing control over women's bodies and to ensure its own unlimited access to them. As if in never-ending reiteration of the joint project of taming nature and women, it seems these bodies must always be reduced to passivity, to ensure their obedience. For example, Martin Winckler questions why, in France, the annual gynecological check-up is considered an "immutable ritual," a "sacred obligation," from puberty onward, even if were in perfect health. According to Winkler, there is no justification for this practice.
“The idea that we must undergo ‘from the onset of sexual activity, and then every year’ a gynecological exam, a breast exam and a smear test ‘so as not to miss anything’ (i.e., in order not to miss a cervical, ovarian or breast cancer) is medically unsubstantiated, especially for women younger than thirty, among whom cancers are very rare and, in any case and as a rule, tend not to be discovered in generalist check-ups. And then, a year later, if the patient is doing well, the doctor can renew her contraceptive prescription without examining her! Why? It's quite simple: if the woman is feeling well, the likelihood that the doctor will find ‘something’ is almost nil. Then, frankly, why harass her about the check-up in the first place?”
Why indeed? This ritual turns out to have some grim stories associated with it. Winckler recounts the case of two adolescents whose doctor (also the mayor of their local authority) insisted on a gynecological and breast exam every three months. But the point of the institution, whether annual or more frequent, appears to be ideological more than anything else: it's about maintaining surveillance of women's bodies. Blogger and journalist Marie-Hélène Lahaye notes the eloquent title of a French obstetricians and gynecologists newsletter which, in June 2016, opposed widening the remit of independent midwives: the doctors denounced measures that would damage women's "medical surveillance . . ." For Mary Daly, this ritual perpetuates a state of anxiety in women from all walks of society—a situation comparable to that born of the pressures of beauty conventions— and constitutes a substantial drain on their resources.
Many doctors are so sure of their rights that they can cross the line into illegality without even noticing. In 2015, an internal note sent out by the South Lyon medical faculty inviting its gynecology students to practice vaginal examinations on patients sedated for operations was picked up online. On social media, as Marie-HÊlène Lahaye reports, numerous doctors and students were offended by reminders that every medical action requires the patient's consent and that the introduction of fingers into the vagina meets the legal definition of rape. Some of them protested that there was "nothing sexual" in the practice and that they took "no pleasure at all" in it, thereby offering a brand-new and daring revision to the definition of rape. Others jumped from frying pan to fire by arguing that, if they were to respect procedure and request the patients' authorization, the latter might well refuse it. After reading and hearing from these quarters that vaginal and rectal exams were neutral acts without any sexual aspect, Lahaye suggested on Twitter that, in this case, the medical students could train in this work by practicing on each other: "I admit this was not received with wild enthusiasm."
Another problematic ritual: the parade of medical personnel who show up when a woman is in the midst of giving birth and each in turn insert two fingers into her vagina to assess her cervical dilation, without requesting consent nor even informing her beforehand, and sometimes without being overly gentle either. Lahaye invites us to imagine the equivalent for other body parts: you are at the dentist and, at regular intervals, unfamiliar people come into the room and insert their fingers into your mouth; or you are seeing a specialist for a rectal exam and a dozen people take turns putting their finger into your anus . . . "Such a practice," Lahaye concludes, "is inconceivable in any of the medical disciplines except obstetrics, the one that's all about access to women's genitals." We see here, in an extreme form, the assumption that women's bodies belong to everyone but themselves, which is found to differing degrees throughout society and explains why we are not expected to kick up a fuss over the odd pat on the bottom.

China underwent rare scrutiny of its human rights record at the United Nations on Tuesday.
The Universal Periodic Review (UPR), which all UN member states must undergo every five years, focused on Xinjiang, a remote region where China has incarcerated more than 1 million Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities and is accused of crimes against humanity.
The political situation in Hong Kong, where Beijing has imposed a strict set of "security" laws, was also taken into consideration.
More than 160 countries addressed the hearing in Geneva, Switzerland, and each only had 45 seconds to speak.
China once again denied any allegations of human rights abuses.
"We embarked on a path of human rights development that is in keeping with the trend of the times and appropriate to China's national conditions and scored historic achievements in this process," China's UN Ambassador Chen Xu said through an interpreter at the meeting.
Uyghur and Tibetan groups each held small protests outside the UN offices in Geneva.
Western countries slam Beijing
Canada's representative to the UN, Leslie Norton, called on China to end "all forms of enforced disappearances targeting human rights defenders, ethnic minorities and Falun Gong practitioners" and to repeal the controversial security law in Hong Kong.
Danish UN ambassador Ib Petersen called on Beijing to implement UN recommendations in Xinjiang and to "release writers, bloggers, journalists, human rights defenders and others arbitrarily detained for exercising their right to freedom of expression, and guarantee this right, including in Hong Kong."
Meanwhile, Czech ambassador Vaclav Balek also urged China to "end the criminalization of religious and peaceful civil expression by ethnic and religious groups — including Muslim, Uyghurs and Buddhists, Tibetans and Mongolians — under the pretext of protecting state security" and "stop cross-border kidnappings and intimidating Chinese citizens living abroad."
Germany, Japan and Ireland also called for better protections of minorities in Xinjiang and Tibet.
Praise for China
Diplomats told Reuters news agency that China had pressured its supporters to fill up their allotted speaking time with praise.
First secretary Ilia Barmin of Russia's diplomatic mission advised China "to consistently improve the understanding and capacity of citizens to use standard spoken and written Chinese in Xinjiang."
South Africa's political affairs counselor Frankye Bronwen Levy called on China to strengthen laws against domestic violence that were introduced eight years ago.
The Indian representative, meanwhile, urged Beijing to "continue taking steps to ensure fullest enjoyment of basic human rights by its people, through inclusive and sustainable development."
Some African countries like Ethiopia and Cameroon lauded China's efforts on human rights.
Eritrea's representative for instance urged China to "to comprehensively promote ethnic unity and progress."
Iran also praised China's "national action plan for human rights," while Bolivia commended China's efforts against deforestation.

Ariel Pond
Biographical information
Full Name: Ariel Pond

Sexuality: Pansexual
Status: Alive
Age: 28 (season 3)
Birth: 1987
Race: Human
Nationality: Danish
Origin: Copenhagen, Denmark
Residence:
Burbank, California, USA
Copenhagen, Denmark (formerly)
Profession(s): Travel Blogger
Profile
Height: 5'1" Age: 28 (season 3) Weight: 127lbs Eyes: blue Blood: B+
A girl longing to travel the world, Ariel has long, wavy red hair reaching her mid-back, fair skin splattered with freckles, and bright blue eyes. She wears a frilly purple crop top, green leggings, and short brown boots. For accessories, she has seashell-themed jewelry in the form of a necklace and matching pearl earrings.
As per her suspect appearance in Beauty is Dead, it is known that Ariel eats Dunder Salts, gets manicures, and drinks coffee.
Synopsis
Ariel was a suspect in the murder of Bell Beauty. She is a blogger and world traveller who gives her fans travel tips and destination advice based on her experiences. She has loved travelling ever since she was young and is happy to share her knowledge with others.
She met Bell a few years ago on a trip to Paris. They had both attended a fashion show, and their seats ended up being beside each other. And while Bell wasn't very talkative, Ariel's extroverted personality made up for that. By the show's end, they had swapped numbers, and Ariel offered to give Bell travel tips anytime the beauty influencer needed them.
They remained friends online through social media, and when Ariel had the opportunity to travel to Norway, she thought Bell might like to come. Bell accepted the invitation and joined Ariel on the trip, bringing her cameraman Casey Wood as a plus one.
But the trip wasn't as smooth sailing as Ariel hoped it would be. Bell tried to invoice Ariel for her room charges and "service" fees. But Ariel reminded Bell that it wasn't a free trip and that she never said she would be paying for Bell's travel expenses. Bell argued that the trip was a business deal and that the redhead would pay for Bell's portion of the trip in exchange for her making posts to promote Ariel.
Ariel refused, as they had never talked about this being a business trip. It had always been a trip for two friends to explore Norway. Bell was furious and stormed off, claiming Ariel was using her for fame. Ariel spent the next hours searching for Bell, and when she eventually made it to Vigeland Park, she discovered that her friend had been murdered.
While she had been angry at Bell, she never wished for her to die. Ariel had no idea how horrible Bell had been to Liv and her sister in the past, and she couldn't fault the Norwegian for seeking revenge… Maybe if Bell's personality had been as beautiful as her name, she might have been a better person. Unfortunately, even though Bell was beautiful on the outside, she was a hideous monster on the inside.

@imrryr replied to your post “@imrryr replied to your post “Okay so I don't know...”:
out of curiosity, how do you identify a british/american tourist? is it just when they open their mouths, or is their clothing, or some secret third thing i'm not aware of? i was pleased when i was in austria and everybody started a conversation with me in german (which was also unfortunate because unless they were quoting rammstein or the lyrics to 99 luftballons i had no idea what they were saying, but still, yunno, a little flattering not to look like a tourist)
Hmm, well in Copenhagen, I tend to just look for the people squinting in confusion at signs readings things like "Strøget" or queueing up at the ticketing machines by the subway stations (cause all the locals have either travel cards or the DOT app).
However specifically in reference to the earlier post with travel bloggers, they'll usually mention early in the video which airport they flew from e.g. "It was a very long flight from Boston" or "I slept the whole way from LA".
There is also just a difference in the way Americans/Brits vs. Danes dress. While far from 100% accuracy, you can sometimes recognize the absence or presence of particular articles of clothing. Like if I see a very sorta, casually fashion forward woman on the street, I would expect her to carry a "Mads Nørgaard" or "Planet Nusa" tote bag, but if instead she's carrying say, a Marc Jacobs tote bag, then odds are she's not local. Because Danish people love Scandinavian designs.

This is a blog about the ROMANOVS, believe it or not...
I did not know how interrelated European Royal families are until I started snooping around the Romanovs. Naturally, from the core of their Imperial Family, I followed diverse trails to the aunts, uncles, cousins, second cousins, and so on...and that is when I found out that they were literally all over. Queen Victoria's dream of having all the ruling families of Europe be related had a lot to do with that (she thought it would bring peace...you can tell she grew up alone...families will squabble) and about the fact that Christian IX and his wife Louise were called the "parents in law" of Europe (to this day, I believe all the ruling houses are related to them.)
So what I am trying to say is that I post all of those pictures of British, Danish, Swedish, German, and Prussian, etc., etc. royalty not only because they are fascinating personages (which they are; some are great looking too) but because, one way or the other, they were related to the Romanovs! And yes, this is a Romanov blog.
Since they say a picture is worth a thousand words, I posted two (and an insert.) The family trees are too complex, and I like to get into the weeds of everything, so I did not want to get lost forever in there...whoever is curious can dive in! Maybe one of the great, seasoned history bloggers on Tumblr (of which there are a few) has a simplified genealogical tree around and can post it.

you're fighting for your life in that post and god damn you're an idiot. like completely oblivious to everything everyone is saying. dumb idiot american indeed
nah i honestly think it's getting weird and unhealthy the level of hostility and vitriol like finnish dannish and Belgian tumblr (three nationalities i saw posting with the most disdain) has for americentric posts about something as innocent as if watching foreign movies is a rare thing for you vs the norm. And the way foreign is defined differently based on different economies. I think the frustration of like "man some of you guys really forget non americans are on here" is very fair and warranted. especially with a level of humility too it since you live in America part 2.
if you're a white fandom blogger in finland I kinda think the frustration at americentrism should be rooted in the knowledge it harms others more than you. that it frustrates you on behalf of the rest of the world, while also knowing you benefit from it. it should frustrate you primarily as an ally, not really as a victim. and sometimes it feels more like you're claiming you're being oppressed. there's layers to it, like the potential loss of your native language into english that should be framed as actual marginalization and indigenous culture worth preserving. but idk, there's a lot of "jumping at the chance to be hostile and holier than thou online and justify it to myself as telling off my oppressor" in north and west european tumblr toward american users. when the dynamic is not as clear cut as the situations you're imitating, like the tone of justified disdain and hate when people from the global south make fun of american ignorance, their undeniable oppressors. and sometimes these american users aren't even white, so they're actually far more oppressed by america than you could ever be.
i've seen enough of turkish twitter bullying black americans online with vicious superiority for their perceived connections to american imperialism making them fair game in some international users minds. but not all international users are equally oppressed, are they? some of you guys ARE the oppressors. arguably the turkish person is the more privileged individual in the room. with racial privilege as a turk in an imperial country that committed genocide on minorities for not being turk in order to establish a turk ethnostate. and in terms of international relations turkey is one of the most powerful natjons in the middle east / west asia. this person is the primary oppressor class of the middle east just after white europeans. the idea they have some plight under black americans for being technically brown and middle eastern and using that misconception to make anti black jokes (rampant in their country as well) under the guise of ANTI IMPERIALISM tbh nauseates me. so seeing any kind of largely misplaced co-opted rage for cool comeback fuckery from actual white europeans against the vague sense of "american bad" (yes of course america bad, but to who BUT TO WHO?? like i'm sure we've done Belgium wrong. fair. but is it right to make this americentric conversation always SOo much about you and your danish neighbors?? and with THAT holier than thou attitude with what belgium has done?? like there's limits to the validity vs hypocrisy of frustration about americans forgetting europe exists. the leftist analysis of power imbalance of american culture and media over yours is very good. but in your place of privilege it's very easy for the hostility and condescension to cross over into person with nationalistic ego complex interpreting different life experiences mentioned in polls as an affront on your experiences and proof of american ego and ignorance) it just gets under my skin as of late!
ive thought here and there about the levels of disdain condescension and bitterness from western europe tumblr users to the idea of americentrism and it started off as quite justified and understandable (i think to some level it still is) but some of you guys kind of inappropriately mimic and co-opt the level of anger people actually oppressed my american imperialism do and should have. especially cause you benefit from it. and the clarity and humility and nuance in that is important! especially when many americans are not white, it becomes even more inappropriate as any kind of leftism against a power imbalance and more and more with features of like nationalism/xenophobia
I saw a popular post the other day about how "ancient people were just hammered all the time lol. they drank more beer than water". that's only true for ancient europeans. no one thought to question it let alone insult OP over it. so many posts on here are ethnically eurocentric (revolving around europeans or european americans, european australians etc) as well because eurocentrism and americentrism are so deeply tied and linked.
the discourse on western european tumblr is just getting to a weird place tbh where it's actually getting a bit overblown. and i hate to tell you not to make jokes at our expense or criticize oblivious posts. i definitely don't mean that!! i don't want this to come off as like "europe stop making fun of america or criticizing american ignorance or you're RACIST" but i feel like some of you guys aren't even using americentrism the term and theory correctly anymore and are just using that term for some very mild nuanced situations with actual hate and disgust, like the way foreign films are defined differently. maybe that shouldn't inspire that level of hatred especially when you yourself are not oppressed by the "First World" powers, and you ARE the privileged First World. that post in particular snotty and white fragility laden feeling like it was because of like an ego injury rather than real oppression.

Book Review: The Little Book of Lykke: The Danish Search for the World's Happiest People by: Meik Wiking
A city is successful not when it’s rich but when its people are happy. Creating bikeability and walkability shows respect for human dignity. We’re telling people, ‘You are important—not because you’re rich, but because you are human.’ If people are treated as special, as sacred, even, they behave that way. We need to walk just as birds need to fly. Creating public spaces is one way to lead us to…
