"Navalny" (idem) - hbo max.

It looks like the start of another bad week for Vladimir Putin. 🥳 🎉 👏🏼
Russia’s leading anti-Putin dissident, Alexey Navalny, is the subject of a film which won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature on Sunday.
Now everybody is going to see the film and be reminded of what a dickhead dictator Putin is.
“Navalny,” a film that explores the plot to kill Russian anti-corruption campaigner and former presidential candidate, Alexey Navalny, has won the Oscar for best documentary feature at Sunday’s Academy Awards.
The riveting real-life thriller follows Navalny’s political rise, his survival of an assassination attempt against him by poisoning and his subsequent imprisonment. Directed by Daniel Roher and presented by CNN Films and HBO Max, “Navalny” documents a methodical investigation by CNN Chief International Correspondent, Clarissa Ward, and journalist group, Bellingcat, to unmask Navalny’s would-be killers.
[ ... ]
He was poisoned with nerve agent Novichok in 2020, an attack several Western officials and Navalny himself openly blamed on the Kremlin. Russia has denied any involvement.
After several months in Germany recovering from the poisoning, Navalny returned to Moscow, where he was immediately arrested for violating probation terms imposed from a 2014 embezzlement case that he said was politically motivated.
He was initially sentenced to two-and-a-half years, and then later given nine years over separate allegations that he stole from his anti-corruption foundation.

Rookie-Critic's Top 25 Films of 2022: #22: Navalny (dir. Daniel Roher)
The sole documentary on this year's list, even when accounting for the Honorable Mentions, Navalny really punches you off your feet. Arresting you in a story that, if you didn't care about it before, you will once you get about 30 minutes into the film. Alexei Navalny is the Russian opposition leader, and the man who has the best chance of beating Vladimir Putin. He has such a good chance, in fact, that Putin saw fit to have someone poison him. The film follows Navalny and his team as they try to uncover the truth behind his assassination attempt, and one sequence involving a phone call that had me in complete disbelief. This is a dive down into the depths of what men in power will do when their power is threatened, and it is as fascinating as it is horrifying. Currently streaming on HBO Max.

A letter from Navalny: About the "Oscar" from the guy who finds out everything the very last. The radio in the cell, as usual, turned on at five in the morning. At six, the first news: they tell in detail about all the winners of the last award, except for documentary films. A good sign, I think. Closer to lunch, they lead to the court. I'm on a video call, and the lawyer shows a piece of paper to my camera. "I don't see anything," I say. After poking his sheet into the camera for some more time, the lawyer can't stand it and says: — Your film has received an Oscar. Sooo strange feelings you experience at this moment. These words don't even seem to belong to this world, but, on the other hand, everything here is so strange and crazy that it seems that they belong only to him. Of course, I am terribly glad and, rejoicing, I try not to forget that I did not get the Oscar after all. These were quite exciting and sometimes dramatic events, but a brilliant team was able to show them in such a way that it was worthy of the Oscar award: Daniel Roher, Odessa Ray, Diane Becker, Melanie Miller, Shane Boris and many others who worked on the film. Guys, I congratulate you from the bottom of my heart. Hristo Grozev (I'm hugging you, dude, you're the true star of this movie) and Maria Pevchikh — without you, all this would not have happened even at the level of an idea. Julia, thank you for participating, supporting and preventing me from killing the film crew a couple of times. Friends and colleagues from FBK — as usual, you did everything, and I'm just selling my face. And finally. I repeat, the film is not mine, I did not get the Oscar, and I am not in the position to dedicate this award to someone. But I dedicate all my contribution to honest and brave people, wherever they live, who find the strength to resist the monster of the dictatorship and its constant companion, war, day after day.
Russian dissident Alexei Navalny’s response to the Navalny documentary winning an Oscar between Sunday night and Monday morning. Navalny remains in prison based on false charges of parole violations and fraud. Note that Russian radio did not mention the fact that the Navalny documentary won an Oscar and that he had to find out from his lawyer. Nonetheless, this is another victory against Putin, who hopes that his war will make everyone forget the numerous crimes he has committed on Russian soil, including his attempted murder of Navalny in August 2020 with a chemical nerve agent. Free Navalny!

Navalny (12): BAFTA winning doc that deserves the Oscar.
#onemannsmovies review of "Navalny" (2022). #NavalnyDoc. An astonishing documentary about a thorn in Putin's side. 4.5/5.
A One Mann’s Movies review of “Navalny” (2022). This was only one of three feature-length films that I failed to see from the BAFTA nominations… so of course it won! But “Navalny” is a rare thing: an intimate documentary that is gripping from start to finish. Bob the Movie Man Rating(s): Plot Summary: Alexei Navalny is the only serious political opposition to Putin. We follow Navalny over…
