Well have I got the Discord server for you! It’s called Dangan Roobles and it’s tons of fun! We have tons of channels and cool people that want you (yes, you!) to join us in tomfoolery! Here are some cool traits!

Is me. Dragon tamer friend! I'm back again to say that the mastermind characters are reeaaally fun though! OwO

Oh I’ll definitely admit they’re fun. But when you’re running an RP and you’re the Mastermind? You have a lot you have to do. Keep an eye on everyone because you have eyes everywhere...and maybe I should explain. Long explanation incoming! So I made it under the cut. 

So I helped run a Dangan Ronpa RP with some of my friends from the old blog. It was really fun and I even met a handful of cool people with it. When we were planning it, my main idea was to have a Mastermind that was like the Kirigiri of the group only to turn and show she was their biggest enemy. Everyone loved the idea so I got to making her.( Kaida Miinatazaki, the Ultimate Poet ) At first she was nothing more than a self insert, just more shy. However over the time of RPing, she really fleshed out to be something different.My first draft of her was she had been so bogged down by despair that she worshipped Junko’s ways and even created a 2nd Tragedy. Using her charm to trick her lover and brainwash/torture a person to be her main muscle. Basically creating the brain and brawn situation. She was crazy and her innocent persona was practically an act. As she was truly taken over by despair. Over the course of the RP, she ended up gaining a relationship that she really loved. Which created her own ultimate despair, especially as everyone was screaming ;Get the Mastermind!’. She basically was torturing herself and even practically begged for death. So that this sick game would end, but she couldn’t end it. They’d never forgive her. Fast forward to the end where she revealed everything. Her own lover was the only one who saw her truly innocent persona. Knowing that if things were different, she wouldn’t have done this. He loved her and saw she was truly sorry for all she did. To the point that he was executed with her in a form of love so they could be together wherever they would go. Her lover willing to stay with her in hell. I helped plan pretty much all of this and even the final chapter being Kaida’s final puzzle and final trickery. Which I worked for a week straight on which killed my mental health. Basically after that, I didn’t want to be the Mastermind for quiiiiite awhile. And that’s my full explanation! Though if people want to hear about my Ultimate Poet, I’d love to talk about her. Apologies for long explanation :c - Mod Lexie

She'd been curious about the new recruit standing in front of her, introducing himself without looking her directly in the eyes. But it wasn't as if this new acquaintance would be any different, she had thought. So after their brief interaction, she had been content to watch him walk away, destination unknown, before turning around and setting off to her usual napping place. what makes a dangan ronpa oc a mary sue ?

First of all, anon, let me apologize for the amount of time this ask has been sitting in the inbox. I wanted to try and organize my opinions about it–though even now, you’re going to be reading a loose list of ideas… 

…And you’re also going to be reading about it under the cut, because this got long. Say it with me, now: “Mod Asahina talks way too much!”

As a TL;DR though, let me just say: “Mary Sue” often isn’t a relevant or applicable term to use with DR OCs.

First of all, “Mary Sue” is definitely a trope that unfairly targets female characters and, to an extent, female creators. That applies to the Dangan Ronpa OC community as well as the Dangan Ronpa community in general–even though that sexism isn’t as prevalent as it was in, say, 2013, it’s still here. Knowing that, before you or other folks throw around the term in a derogatory manner, it’s important to analyze whether or not you’re just dealing with misdirected misogyny! 

(I know the term “Gary Stu” exists, but you don’t see that around nearly as much as the female version, and the limits for what makes a male character “too perfect” are enforced far less often than a female character!) 

With that out of the way, we can focus harder on Dangan Ronpa OCs in particular, and… why “Mary Sue” is such a difficult term to use with them. 

Judging a Dangan Ronpa OC means taking things into context that aren’t in a lot of other settings. Having an SHSL Title requires being really, really good at something–specifically, being a highschooler that’s so good in your field you’re better than comparable adults. In most other settings, this would be a trait a so-called Mary Sue would have, but in Dangan Ronpa, it’s literally required. 

Sometimes, an OC’s backstory or talent also requires them to have other stereotypically “Mary Sue” traits beyond just “being good at something”. The last ask I answered referred to an OC who was amazingly beautiful. Since that OC’s talent involved modeling, and thus looking good, being so amazingly beautiful didn’t make them a Mary Sue–it made them qualified for their title! 

What I’m saying is, with Dangan Ronpa OCs, you can’t really check off a list of traits and have a certain score equal Mary Sue. 

Now, to… uh, actually answer your question. If you really want to determine how “Sue-ish” a character is, you’ll have to look at their role in the plot and how other characters and scenarios react/change because of them. Basically, a Dangan Ronpa OC is a Mary Sue if they make a story they’re in boring because they’re unrealistic.

(Note that “unrealistic” in this definition, is referring to something unbelievable by or contrary to canon standards. “Story,” meanwhile, refers not only to the main plot, but subplots and individual character arcs.) 

For example: 

- A character designed to be a seventeenth student in the canon of the first Danga Ronpa game figures out all of Enoshima’s plans, prevents every student from dying, and gets everyone out in a matter of hours. 

This is definitely an extreme example, but I would feel comfortable calling that character a Mary Sue. Their unrealistic-ness stems from things like how they figured out Enoshima’s plans so quickly–specifically, more quickly than Kirigiri, who is canonically the SHSL Detective and figures out situations more quickly than just about everybody. The story is boring because this character basically stripped the main plot of all conflict and prevented most of the character arcs from, well, happening. 

But, like I said before, it’s important to judge this character as a Mary Sue because of their impact on the story, not based on whatever traits they may or may not have. To contrast, a non-example: 

- A character designed to be a seventeenth student in the canon of the first Dangan Ronpa game is a kind and gentle soul who would never hurt a fly. They’re beautiful and intelligent, too. They end up a victim of a murder somewhere along the way, much to the utter dismay of the remaining canon characters

…I wouldn’t necessarily call this character a Mary Sue, just based on what I know about them from this paragraph. Sure, they don’t sound particularly compelling, especially if they remain a static character with exclusively positive traits, but I don’t know enough about how they affect the plot or any canon character’s individual arc to say they’re unrealistic to canon or that they make any stories boring. 

But those are just canon-insertion characters which are, admittedly, the easiest to unintentionally make into Mary Sues. What about your own Fangan or written work? In that situation, you have to look at what you take from DR canon, but also your own canon. If you’ve written an AU divorced from the games and anime in every way except for “super talented students” and “a killing game,” you’re basically in charge of your setting–if one of your characters makes the story boring through unrealistic intelligence, intuition, or power, they could be considered a Mary Sue. 

And if you’re writing an OC for an RP, whether it be individual or group, in my opinion, it’s really, really hard to make a Mary Sue for those thanks to the nature of its setting. The fact that stories have to be made with at least one other person means you’d be getting input from multiple parties on the story, the characterization, and the setting. And since RPs are generally designed to be enjoyed mainly by the people doing the RPing, if you and your partner(s) agree that the OC in question isn’t unrealistic to your canon and isn’t ruining the setting or story, then they aren’t! 

Whew! So that’s basically what I have to say on the subject, with two big disclaimers. 

One: the topic of what a Mary Sue is or isn’t has been discussed since the concept was invented in the early 1970s. A lot of people on the internet might have a different opinion on this than me. You might be one of them! That’s totally cool. 

Two: While the term Mary Sue does have negative connotations, you can still write stories with “Mary Sue” characters! If that one paragraph about the seventeenth student who “fixed” all the problems in DR1 sounds like an OC you’d wanna write about, go for it. If you want to RP the most plot-breaking, wish-fulfilling, self-proxying oc in existence, go for it. If you’re not writing to appeal to a certain target audience, it literally does not matter how compelling or non-compelling a character might be to anyone except yourself!
