This is a very nice little documentary, especially if you’re a ska-rocksteady-reggae nerd like me.
There are interviews with lots of old reggae gods, several of whom are no longer with us five years later (Toots, Lee Perry, Bunny Lee).
Dandy Livingstone, aged 74, features throughout because he's so good to listen to. He has a beautiful speaking voice, is very composed and happy to share memories. At one point, he sits down at his keyboard and sings a bit of 'A Message to You, Rudy', and it's just wonderful.
There are dramatizations of Jamaicans in London in the 60s and 70s that are low key and not jarring or cringey like you might expect.
'If that shuffle not in the music, it's not reggae' - Bunny Lee

Time Machine - 2024 - No. 1
First in the new Time Machine Playlists for 2024, they will appear once i have 40 songs in each one. Mixed genres of music, from 1950-2022. Already begun No. 2 so could out soon. Enjoy it and share it, might find some bands/artists you like and want to explore their back catalogues!!
I feel 40 is good number of tracks not too long or too short in listening time for your enjoyment. The whole playlist is only two hours and thirty three minutes long.

Good morning! I hope you slept well and feel rested? Currently sitting at my desk, in my study, attired only in my blue towelling robe, enjoying my first cuppa of the day. Welcome to the weekend! And welcome to the final month of the year, December!
Wow! Here we are again: Friday! Where did that week go? No, seriously, where did that week go?
That busy day I detailed yesterday … well … busy as expected! I really covered some ground but, thankfully, I got everywhere on time! Today, will be a lot simpler! In fact, I don’t need to leave the house!
Last night, as I mentioned yesterday, my final stop was at the ‘nine night’ for The Trouble’s dad. Yes, it was a sombre affair but – my goodness – we had a good time! I don’t know what your in-laws are like but mine are brilliant! We don’t have one caterer in the family, we have three! So, whenever we have any kind of family function, The Trouble’s family step up to the plate.
If your party involves good food, you’re halfway to a good time! That was always my mum’s theory. The evening started with hot chicken or vegetable soup, with hard dough bread and butter, and as it was freezing outside, everyone was very appreciative of the soup. The vegetable soup was full of Caribbean ingredients, so I had two cups! And, even though we hadn’t reached main course, we could see people joking and laughing.
We’d set up a dominoes table, so there was an ongoing game throughout the evening. Harlesden’s Finest a.k.a. DiGreeneyez was playing the tunes and she absolutely smashed it! Playing all of Daddy Patterson’s old-time raving favourites: Dandy Livingstone, Johnny Nash and even ‘Big Seven’ by Judge Dread, plus The Paragons’ wonderful version of The Beatles’ ‘Blackbird’. Truly a celebration of his life!
Really hope you can join me tomorrow at 1.00 p.m. for ‘The A-Z Of Mi-Soul Music’. The Letter S Part Three: Executive Producer: @KerryMcMilne. Jigs can’t do his show this week, so the A-Z is extended by two hours until 5.00 p.m.
Have a fabulous and funky Friday! I love you all. You’re probably thinking, “You don’t even know me!” but, if people can hate for no reason, why can’t I love?

What other turn characters have you thought of writing? Do you think you could write a character like Simcoe, Caleb, Townsend, etc?
Full list of my canon/semi canon, American revolution/TURN muses is as follows, see original character list for that specifically. In that list it’s by historical era.
— Benjamin Tallmadge, Elizabeth Schuyler-Hamilton, Angelica Schuyler-Church, Mary Floyd Tallmadge, Sarah Livingston, Nathan Hale, Abigail (Strong), Lola (LeRoy), Anna Strong, Mary Woodhull, Esther de Berdt Reed, Philomena Cheer, John André & William Wilberforce.
I’ve thought of writing Simcoe, I just can’t write characters who operate in that frame of mind well. By which I mean, TURN! Simcoe is cartoonishly evil (affectionate). I think @johngravessimcoe and @honorhearted do excellent at their portrayals and nuancing their on the surface, very “good” vs “bad” characters. Cause the truth is, the American war of independence was a political war of colonial power vs colonial power as much as a philosophical and ideas war of information and neither side was innocent in it. If I wrote Simcoe it’d be closer to historical RPF, as opposed to his TURN! adaptation. Note that actual Simcoe was a badass and a super reformed abolitionist basically his entire life, just like his peer, the philanthropist and redcoat, William Wilberforce.
I won’t lie, I’ve mostly considered writing chaotic bi disaster Alexander Hamilton, not cause he’s my favourite founding father/founding father adjacent. But because his chaotic, dandy energy is unmatched and also because there’s a mountain of evidence to suggest, strongly, bisexuality. Even by 18th century standards when that was in fashion, ala, the Duchess of Devonshire’s household and her affairs across the gender spectrum.
For an excellent Caleb Brewster, I must direct you to: @firstmategod. for Bradford: @curseconsumed, and for Abraham Woodhull & Edmund Hewlett: @sharp-teeth-and-wide-grins / @cabbxges-and-kings, for Alexander Hamilton: @fromnevis & @adcthamilton & for Washington: @historiavn 💕

ONCE IN ’79: The Specials - "A Message To You Rudy"
ONCE IN ’79: The Specials – “A Message To You Rudy” “October 9, 1979 THE SPECIALS, who are about to embark on a major tour with Madness and the Selecter, have a new single out today. The “A” side is a cover of the 1967 Dandy Livingstone (aka Robert Thompson) ska track “Rudy, A Message To You.” The Specials have re-arranged the title but not the song. It’s almost note for note like the original…
